Game Chat – Adelaide v Gold Coast

Written by Motts on April 2 2021

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, 7:50pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: R3 2020: Gold Coast 12.10 (82) SMASHED Adelaide 4.5 (29)

The Suns were brutal in the contest and highly entertaining going forward, producing a masterclass on either side of the ball to storm to a convincing 12.10 (82) to 4.5 (29) win and record their second consecutive victory this season. And, just as was the case last week, it was the youngsters leading the charge. Matt Rowell (20 disposals, 10 tackles, two goals) dazzled out of the midfield, with last year’s No.1 draft pick enhancing his reputation as one of the game’s best young talents with another stunning display well beyond his 18 years. Meanwhile young forward Ben King (13 disposals, six marks, three goals) was just as imposing in attack, as the Suns stamped their authority on the contest from the outset to crush the Crows.

Match Preview: The plucky Suns belted North last week and didn’t give up the ghost in Round 1 against The Eagles in Perth. If this was the Adelaide of 2020, you’d be chalking up another win for Stewy Dew and the boys. But it’s the Adelaide of 2021 they’re playing. A team that knocked off no less than Geelong a couple of weeks ago at this very stadium. I think that gives Adelaide the edge which, when combined with Gold Coast’s travel back from the west means The Crows should get this one.

Motts Watch:

Crows

Looking for the Rowe boy to bounce back after a dirty week. I know I shouldn’t expect so much of a rookie but he was the one who set expectations high in the first week with a ton. Want Laird to go big. I’m talking 120+.

Suns

The only Sun on my list is A. “DNP” Fyfe so there’s not a lot of interest for me from a SC perspective. Hugh Greenwood’s SC output has dropped markedly from 2020. It’d be nice to see him return to form.

Mottsy’s Tip: Adelaide by 10 (current tipping record 5 from 6)

  1. Should i trade Fyfe (Gold Coast) to N.Murray (Adelaide) to save a 0 from Highmore? (Both are $102,400)

Will have to use Highmore or Bergman as loophole to get Grundy’s VC score. Hoping they dont get named medical sub.

    TU – Yes
    TD – No

    1. Nick Murray is the medical sub.
Highmore is not a emergency so won’t be a medical sub whilst Bergman is an emergency and travelled to WA with team.

            1. Just below KP height 190cm

Could do anything, but I wouldn’t expect much, looks pretty lean.

              I would do it.

        1. Luke Parks
Pick 8 in 2021 AFL Rookie Draft.
website: “An intercept defender who plays above his height, Parks gets his opportunity this weekend after some stellar form in VFL practice matches.” avg. 12 disposals, 72 SuperCoach points in the SANFL last season.

Who knows? I would take the risk in your position.

    1. Caldwell isn’t playing so you will get your VC player’s score as Captain.
You will also get Powell’s score as your emergency , as replacement to Caldwell.

  2. Adelaide are just focussing for Tex. Basically every inside 50 is being targeted to Tex and this is occurring a lot more this year since Jenkins left for Geelong.
1st quarter not even over and Tex has kicked 3

    1. I have both Bruce. But it’s only 3rd week and only 2nd quarter in this match. However, yes I’m happy so far

        1. Well, given my available loopholes it was him or Gulden. I only found out I had a loophole after Dunks played.

          On 105 at 3/4 time.

          1. Same here HH. I had VC on Grundy but C on Macrae. I might be the only person “happy” about Highmore being dropped as I have Butts on the bench with the E. Win some, lose some.

            1. Fingers crossed on Kosi.

I DPP shuffled around my team in a big way to get the best combo of players on the field, as I had 30 players last weeek.

So now it looks like I’m taking a donut in defence and have 3 spares in the mids.

  3. I wonder how many coaches have decided to bring in a Suns player as 5 had an average of 100+ after the first 2 games but then none were owned by more than 3% of teams.
After half time none of those 5 were above 50 points

    1. He is attempting to jog on the boundary line but is still in pain. Doesn’t look like a long term injury

  4. I completely forgot that Witts was the ruck in the Tech team. Will be very interesting to see what happens next week to teams

    1. ……and with the defence rookies, and maybe other rookies, an….an……I blame the umpires for this too, it’s their fault!!!! LOL

        1. Sorry, Bruce P,
I currently have 2 possible donuts about to happen in my defence, and with the other rookies not named and Witts getting injured it has made it rather awkward to rearrange the team.
As the umpire comments, well I used to be one, and it’s just what we were taught to except when something goes wrong.

Cheers and apologies all if offended anyone.

          1. All good , couldn’t follow umpire reference, reckon you might have me covered in wightys league.

            1. How the ballup and centre clearance goes is the umpire’s fault if you have got the dominant ruck.

(Big forward’s whinge when they don’t get a quick inside 50)

Umpiring itself in that match was pretty good actually.

  5. Touched. Tex a bit lucky there, but in contested marks they stretch the rules a lot all the time.

    1. nice call with trading for Tex HH … paid off in points and cash increase with Roos to come. YOu can trade him to anyone in a couple of weeks … one up on most

  6. What a great game, back and forth contest that could of gone either way.
Walker and Sloane turning back time with epic performances so far this season!!

  7. Butts, a key defender, somehow the highest scorer of the four players I had in this one lol. Good stuff.

    1. He was one I had in the team and dropped before round 1. Was ok with that earlier on but now he’s pulled out a big one.

And we know how Sir Mixalot goes.

  8. Must say having Will Brodie in my team has been one of my worst Supercoach decisions. He is a midfielder/forward #9 draft pick and was in a good amount of centre bounces.
However he had only 8 disposals today and then 62% TOG for a score of 29 points……
What sort of midfielder does that 3 weeks in a row? 2 years ago he averaged 80 with a 19 in there then only played 1 game last year.

I ain’t going near him ever again, even if he switches clubs which I feel is a real strong chance considering he can’t cement a spot or play enough TOG.

      1. Hind and Bailey have done well and then Smith did well this game. Brodie has not performed once. I was going to sideways him to Caldwell/Heppell but then both injured stopped that. I then didn’t have enough confidence in Walker as I don’t like backing KPP. Looks like that may be not as punishing this season with new rules

      1. Looked good for a quarter. Which is as good as some other players with a much higher pricetag.

As bench fodder he’s ok a few more weeks.

Honestly with 2 goals and 14 possessions he’s scored pretty harshly.

        3

        1. Going at 50% efficiency is what held him back, then it says he was 40% scoring accuracy going 2.1 so 2 completely missed the goals.
1 mark and 0 tackles to go with it, so it really was only the effective disposals that scored for him
