Game Chat – Carlton v Collingwood

Written by Motts on March 25 2021

Where and when: MCG, 7:20pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: R14 2020: Carlton 7.6 (48) DEF BY Collingwood 10.12 (72)

Without a number of key players, the Pies rose to the sizeable task laid down by the Blues. Trailing by 10 points midway through the third quarter, Collingwood weathered the storm and finished with a flourish. Holding Carlton goalless for the entirety of the second half, the Pies kicked five unanswered majors of their own to coast home. Jamie Elliott (19 disposals, eight tackles) enjoyed a standout midfield performance, but was supported admirably by Taylor Adams (23 disposals, seven clearances) and youngster Josh Daicos (21 disposals, one goal).

Match Preview: Bucks doesn’t want to think about it but the truth is one of these teams is more than likely going to be on 0-2 after this game. We’re only in Round 2 and already we’ve got a high stakes match! Both teams have good players returning (Sidebottom and Williams) and both will be dead keen for the W. Should be a cracking game between two teams that aren’t big fans of one another.

Motts Watch:

Carlton
I reckon this game will be won or lost in the ruck. Grundy looked like he won the tap outs last week but the Dogs mids were snaffling everything. Even with Cripps, Walsh, and Williams, Carlton doesn’t have that same quality running through the guts so Pittonet needs to step up.

Collingwood
While the margin was only 16 points against The Dogs last week, the Pies never led. They had winners in the middle (Pendles) and down back (Moore) but their forward line was relatively bare. Who will kick their goals this week?

  1. Regretting getting Crips told my self last year don’t get him not worth the risk! but still end up getting him.

  2. OK for me, its somewhat official … CD have changed the guard in the scoring of the two big rucks – watching Gawn and Grundy last week as opposed to the other rucks, and watching Grundy being scored over 1 quarter tonight. …the fix is on as they say, as far as I am concerned. Whether they want mix it up and make it more “interesting” by not having two lock in big scorers or whatever … there is no way Pittonet outscored / outperformed or outplayed Grundy in that quarter …

And forget he kicked a goal and forget what the “recorded” stats say … Grundy is simply being scored harshly … IMO

We’ll see how the scoring ends up at the end of the match …

    1. I agree Macca, watching the game I expected Grundy to be dominating the scoring with 8+ hit-outs to advantage. His scoring has picked up a bit late in the second quarter but it seems low. Which is great as I don’t own him!

      1. oh you wound me Thommo!! Haha … yeah, it didn’t look quite right last week, and especially with some of the big scores of the other less known rucks, shall we say … and whilst Grundy was off and yes the Doggies had a great midfield, I didn’t think he actually scored as badly as he was on the “official stats”… same for Grawn …

Tonight, he’s dominating Pittonet – yet they are still virtually the same score … suss as!!

        1. Gawn’s score was pretty spot on for affect last week – he barely touched it until mid-second quarter. It will be interesting to see how he goes against a weak ruck this week.

You are right about the Dogs – they will make a lot of midfields look poor this season.

    3. Hey Macca, you know what, I agree mate. I recon CD changed their “secret herbs and spices”. I watched Gawn last week have, as a min, 4HTA (and I mean straight in the lap of Oliver, Harmes and Trac) a contested mark from op kick and no sharks by Half time and he was on 30! How is that possible!?!

    4. Doing my head in Cripps…now you are falling over when no one is near you !!! Your only saving grace this year is I last minute traded you in for Rowell !!! Lots of better options though. Its only that rookies are the trade targets at the moment that you keep your job.

  3. Jamie Elliot being carried off the ground as he can’t put any weight on his right foot. On comes sub Ruscoe

    1. Poor bloke is made of glass. If he wasn’t so injury prone he’d be one of the best small fwds in the competition.

  5. Any got some insight to Darcy Moore’s scoring this year? Any change of role? What do we think the chances are of keeping up this scoring and ending up somewhere near the top 6?

    1. Nope, same lockdown role. Just pulled off some great intercepts tonight, done some solid distributing as well.

      1. Cheers.

He did knock out 119 last week too. But if he’s still playing lockdown there will have to be games to come where he only manages 50s and 60s.

    1. Yes because you should never have started with him but if you do have him I don’t think he’s a wasted trade out. He was poor for months last season and now 2 games in row this season.

    1. Lol indeed. Small sample size of games. No doubt, absolutely no doubt, Grawndy finish top 2 rucks.

      1. There wasn’t ever any suggestion that they wouldn’t be the top 2 rucks.
The conjecture was regarding the ability of them to average 130 & 140 or 110 & 115 in 2021 and whether or not it would be better to start 2 alternatives and upgrade to them when they are significantly cheaper.

So far it appears that it would have been better to start with cheaper alternatives in the ruck and go four deep with defenders

  6. Any chance the umpires will reward a single one of Walsh’s tackles? Ball dropped time after time and no free. (Yes, I am a Walsh owner).

    1. He isn’t suited to the new game style at all. I’ll be trading him this week unless somebody gets a bad injury and another gets a 3-week suspension

    Degoey 77 -> 97

    Maynard 8 -> 45

    1. Williams 20 Disposals, 14 contested at 50% efficiency. Had 5 frees against, so shows he can score a lot more if he performs correctly.
Dow doesn’t look to be a real stand out, 2 rounds and no higher than 60. Looking like a slow burner
Saad 23 possies at 56% efficiency
Cripps only 21 possies and doesn’t seem to be the one for end to end football

Grundy 51 hitouts and 16 disposals at 56% efficiency

      10

      1. Based on two games thus far – you would have to say Dow and Cripps are both trade outs … neither look great.

Dow down to Warner (if you don’t have him) if he can be seen to hold his place, and use the funds to upgrade Cripps to anyone in that bracket – also depends if you hold all the best rookies and they hold their places …

        Considering this though …

        9

        1. I might sideways Dow to one of the Young’s (not Angus or Malcolm) and trade Cripps to Rowbottom.

Rowbottom will be the breakout midfielder of the year he had a knee hyper extension in 2nd qrtr last week and the anesthetic stopped him from being able to kick properly but he still managed 115?

          2

          3
        2. Dow at 56 and 60 last week isn’t shockingly bad for a rookie.

He’s just not a huge earner quickly.

I dunno he’s worth a trade out but wasn’t worth starting

    2. Thanks Nato – and thank God some normal type scoring back for grundy – but gee, look at the hitout differential – last couple of years, he would have been on a monster score

  8. Welcome to the C Fyfe!….. of the Gold Coast variety….
Gave Grundy one more chance as VC and he delivered a score I’m comfortable with.
Sure Gawn could dominate for 180 but I would rather take it and relax for the weekend…

    1. Oh! Good sh*t, Jamhed!

I gave him the Steer Clear designation in this week’s captaincy article (whoops) because of what I saw last round and Buckley’s comments afterwards, looks like he got his sh*t together though.

      1. GD, you are the Guru on who to take as C, so it was fortunate for me that I have had a mega day at work and didn’t have time to read your article until after the game started tonight!

Your article is a must read every week, thanks for all your research and insights.

        1. Bah, not so far lol! Hats off, Jam.

Appreciate it though. Goodluck for the rest of the round, catch ya.

  9. As a Grundy owner with the VC on him I’m a bit happier than I was last week but I’m still not satisfied. I wont be dropping him but I still think that I was wrong to start him.

Grundy 2019 V Carlton vs tonight

    2019 – 12k, 13hb, 8mks, 48HO, 1Tickles, 2goals 1behind, SC-141
    2021 – 07k, 09hb, 3mk, 51HO, 6tickles, 0goals obehind, SC-132

    He was robbed in 2019

    5

    3
      1. I don’t see him as robbed when he was inefficient with the ball going at 56% efficiency. He may have had a lot of HTA but how many hitouts were to the opposition? There was probably a couple which would restrict his score.

        6

        0
        1. 51 hitouts – not sure how many were “officially” scored as to advantage, but for each one to advantage, they score 5 points … surely he got 20 / 25?? (now remember, just because the stat says something, doesn’t mean it was scored correctly ok)
20 gets him 100 points straight up

          6 tackles – 24 points
yes, down as 5 clangers – 1 was a free against -4 points
          2 frees for 8 points
So of his 16 disposals then they are saying he went at 56% and in that, 4 of those were clangers, so negative points for those.

I don’t have the specifics on his ones recorded as clangers (and again, remember, I dont trust the stats he was given) so I’m not sure on which ones lose the most points and which ones gain them … but kicks score more

Regardless of these, I reckon he was scored harshly, in real terms, and they couldn’t refute too much, as he was dominating the hitouts by such a large margin regardless, he had to be scored somewhat decently.

Anyway, everyone can have their opinion … I’ve watched enough games over many years and rewatched games and can and have shown in years gone by how the scoring can be at best “wrong or missed” … and at worst deliberate … and possibly done so to make it more engaging for us punters to choose different players … anyways .. many will disagree no doubt.

      1. Yep, ‘have to agree guys. IMO their scoring system has gone from “umpiring” to spectator refereeing (personal judgement).
……which also leads me to wonder why we have always called crickets’ “Umpires” when they are clearly “Refereeing” and it’s the cameras that are the real/actual “umpires”……

      1. I agree Jamhed. A bit harsh. Almost kicked a couple tonight. Would have got him close to a hundred.
I’ll back him to crack the ton next week against the Dockers.

Should continue to see more time in the midfield

  13. Glad I had the vc on grundy. I’m comfortable with that score (if I can find a loophole). Dow is going, he just needs another year or so. Moore is the big one for me. He has been the standout defender for 2 weeks now. Interesting. I am going to try and find a spot for him I think. Maybe Clarke out with cash in bank, I can afford him. And Walsh, keep, no change
