Game Chat – Essendon v Footscray

Written by Motts on July 17 2020

Where and when: Friday 7:50pm (AEST) at Metricon

Last time they met:

Saturday August 10, 2019

Essendon 4.9 (33) belted by The Western Bulldogs 21.11 (137) [no that’s not a typo] at Marvel.

What it means for Essendon: After slipping into the Top 4 last week, this game presents a chance to consolidate their solid form since being beaten by The Mighty Blues by a point in Round 4. And to avenge last August’s thrashing.

What it means for The Bulldogs: After being embarrassed by a slick Carlton team last week, the Dogs find themselves at 13th on the ladder at 3-3. They’ll be very keen for a reappearance of their Round 5 form when they recorded a strong win over North.

Mottsy Watch: Expecting a tough, aggressive game with both teams having a lot to prove. I’ll be watching Bailey Smith who was very good against The Blues last week.

Mottsy’s Tip: Essendon by 10.

    1. Nah, just means instead of coming off Gawn will float FWD for two minutes. Not to worry, still a god.

      1. That makes sense on why he is in. I’m not worrying about Gawn as Captain as Grundy has got that spot. It just made me wonder whether that small addition to the team could cause massive effects to Gawn and his scores for other coaches

        1. We only have one bit of data.
Jackson has played one game this season where Gawn put up 184 against Pittonet in his first game

  1. Off topic but still can’t decide who to bring in for Starcevich… i have no cover down back so I need them to have good JS.

    Tu; Day
    Td; McPherson

    1. Day was named on field. McPherson on the extended bench for Monday so may not play. I’m with you, absolutely no idea what to do

    2. with so many games apparently grouped together coming up , good JS will be an issue , even premos will be getting rested , especially coming up to finals with teams looking like they’ll miss out

  2. A nice even 100 for Bailey Smith would be nice before every coach in the universe brings him in next week.

I thought about bringing in Macrae for Fyfe, but didn’t, so I’m guessing he’ll carve out about 160…

      1. Most weeks I’ve had carnage, so got Smith in early.
Plenty rookies debuts this week. Perfect double down grades coming.

  3. I have brought in rankine and hibberd…

I’m picking Macrae, Hurley , tippa and C Daniel to score well

  4. Brought in Simpson this week and still deciding whether to bring in Rankine
A nice score from Cahill and I might bring in Lloyd and bring in Cahill next week.
Have Starcevich as E but even a good score from Starc could mean I bring Brander into defence and switch Hill to forwards instead of taking Aart on field
    T/ u Lloyd
    T/d Rankine
    Simpson came in for Fyfe

  5. Dev Smith, please. Less free kicks and being a f*ckwit, more touches and SC points.

      1. IMO, I’d be keeping all Ess and Melb players that score in your top 18.

My Uncle “Smart” advises Townsend will not be one of those.

    1. Smith hasn’t looked interested for the last few weeks…but if I was his coach I would be extremely annoyed.
Last night, more on ball time, no Shiel, his chance to really stand up…..he’s out of form….and looks down on confidence…..I have him and think its time to opt out…..

  12. Get home for the night and see English cracked the double tonne 😮
How many coaches do you think will go chasing his points and trading out players like Gawn/Grundy 😉

  13. Its about time CD had a look at their ruck scoring – I mean it just seems to be way too skewed against other positions for what they actually do. Im talking specifically the higher end ruck players they can score a ton basically jumping arould a bit tapping the ball to a teamate – hardly elite skills but just feels like they are being ridiculously oover rewarded for what they actually do (appreciate there are games where a ruck can dominate and be a real key reason for a win – but not as often as the high scores would have you believe).

    1. IMO as x-Umpire and coach, a hit out is the equivalent of a successful contested disposal.
ie. look at statistics, number of hit outs contested = kicks/handballs, and what happens immediately after, ie: no turnovers and a goal. = effectiveness

    2. LOL just “jumping around a bit, tapping to teammates”, it certainly is an elite skill being up there and deftly putting it to a teammates advantage… then ice packs on shins for a week, bruised hips from opponents knee… note English for example had 7 marks, 20 disposals, so hardly jumping around a bit… our great game has a place for all, tall, short and in between, and each have equal importance and role to play in the TEAM

  14. Yep EHC,that’s why the ball will always be “bounced” so it’s not favourable to “programmed 7ft-er bean poles”.
Tall guys will still be expected to think every now and again.

    1. I agree that the ball should be thrown up. But to suggest the likes of Gawn, Grundy, Goldstein don’t think is pretty laughable
