Game Chat – Geelong v Brisbane

Written by Motts on March 26 2021

Where and when: Kardinia Park, 7:50pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: PF 2020: Brisbane 6.6 (42) DEF BY Geelong 11.16 (82)

Brisbane hung in against the Cats for the first three quarters but the Lions will rue the way they played in the penultimate clash, with their dare, flair and line-breaking run missing. Gary Rohan booted three goals and Tom Hawkins also kicked two in a strong forward performance, while the Cats’ midfield unit of Mitch Duncan (22 disposals), Sam Menegola (19) and Dangerfield (17) was also important. Tom Stewart in defence was also among the Cats’ best. Nothing came off for the Lions, with Brownlow Medal favourite Lachie Neale (24 disposals, two goals) their best in a flat end to such a promising campaign.

Match Preview: The timing of this match is perfect. I’ll have gotten over my hangover from last night and will be ready to timidly take a sip on my first froth of the day.

Motts Watch:

Geelong
Geelong bat deep but the loss of Dangerfield will hurt. They’ll be happy to be playing at home where they dominate and Brisbane has only won 5 of 16. Will they be able to match the intensity that I expect Brisbane to bring to this match? SC-wise I want Clark to post another 80+ score and for Stewart to run around all day collecting possessions at will.

Brisbane
Boy do these Lions come into the game with a chip on their shoulder. In their last two games, they’ve been bundled out of the 2020 finals series by the team they’re facing tonight. And last week they lost to a team that by all rights they should have belted. Look for them to come out breathing fire. I’ll be looking for Neale to get tagged right out of the match vindicating my decision not to pick him.

    1. Jaxon Prior Def.$123,900
Pick 59 in the 2019 AFL Draft.
      via brisbane Lions profile:
“Prior is a readymade defender who is able to not only intercept the ball, but has superb vision, skills and decision-making abilities.”

  2. If Neale gets another 75-80 score, is it stupid to think about trading him and get him cheaper later in the season. I’m aware it could be seen as a waste of trades but cant cop a sub par Neale. I want his worth

TU – Hold firm on Neale all year
TD – Trade Neale & upgrade elsewhere & get back later in season

    1. Cats aren’t known for tagging … and not sure a lot of teams think Neale hurts them on the scoreboard (different to racking up points in SC in some sense) …
BUT, it has been shown that he doesn’t handle a hard tag all that well … depends if they want to “waste” a player on a hard tag …

They are already down Danger and Menadue … may not pay them to tag.

I don’t think Neale was tagged really at all last week … he just looked off and disinterested at times … stat was posted to show he averaged something like 10 tackles a game … and last week, not one … said everything. Will depend on how Fagan challenges the Lions to step up this week …

      Just my thoughts mate …

  3. News on Fox Footy just now that the Covid case in Brisbane and in the community since last week could post all kinds of issues with the footy teams going forwards … including Sydney from last weeks match.

Lions supporters being told to leave the ground immediately if they have flown in from Brisbane …

lets hope we dont go the way we went last year …

    1. They were talking about it on ABC Grandstand, the Thursday game next week is meant to be at the Gabba.

  4. No idea why Charlie Constable doesn’t ask for a trade. He’d be best 22 at most clubs in the league

  5. Stuck at work, but night a little better after seeing my POD Bailey on 35 at qtr time! Hope he keeps it up as I won’t get a chance to see how he performs

  6. Dodging bullets galore tonight.

Daniher justifying his exorbitant salary has rocketed to……zero. Fortunately I loopholed him so he is on my bench.

Sharp has also rocketed to…..zero. Fortunately he is on my bench.

I have taken a flesh wound though with having Neale although I did take the VC of him minutes before the game start.

  7. Neale and Daniher score will hurt so much….. Combined they’ll end up scoring 20 at half time at this pace.
Good-bye overall glory, it was good to flirt with you for a half round ^^

  8. Daniher to Zeibell next week. Essendon waited a year too long in getting rid of him. I’m not waiting another week.

  9. Neale had an interrupted preseason so those off us (including me) who started with him were risking a slow start.

  10. Maybe the preseason talk of Neale carrying an injury wasn’t all fluff. On track for two really poor games by his standards. His leg or whatever it was might still be affecting him.

          That’s true!
Him and Daniher a combined 80 at the end of the night and I’ll open the good bottle I was saving for a celebration 🙂

    1. Not sure on the breakeven but if he scores 90 next week he’ll drop to $651k. If follows that up with another 90 he’ll be $603k

        1. Swap him for Daniher in a couple of weeks. Or maybe Gulden.

Actually, right now I think I’d prefer Gulden.

  11. Lachie Neale just jumped from 50 to 70 and OÇonnor something similar or larger …

AND how is that not a free???? ? Lions ripped off!!!

    1. That was appalling umpiring that cost the Lions that match at the end.

Similarly, there’s something really hinky going on with the scoring system when both Neale and O’Connor both get massive scale up points in the last minute …

  12. How the hell was that not caught with the ball?

That is an umpire decided game and a total disgrace.

  13. I don’t understand CD scoring this year: Zorko 20 kicks, was 81 pts then suddenly 64pts and only total of 4 free against. Would love to check that.

    1. That’s the exact trade that I’m looking at.
I just think that doing it all on one go next round it’s a bit risky..

I’m very tempted on moving Cripps tho, I wasn’t overly excited about him to start but the price was good enough to be a fit in my structure.
I just think he doesn’t have it this season.
Obviously Neale is having a shocker, 76avg for the 2 games, and will drop bad.
But I think he’ll come out strong and will be top 8 by the end of the season.
Do we burn 2 trades for getting him out before he drops and pick him back up at, let’s say, 150k less?

    1. They never needed to sub in the umpires, they were already on the field for them from the first bounce.

      13

  14. A lot of disgruntled comments but the umpiring was seriously not up to standard. It’s all very well to say the umpire missed the incident but they have other umpires who must have seen it. This does no credit to the AFL who will staunchly support the indefensible…..
    As always.

    1. The defence will be no prior opportunity however Blicsav threw the ball away, which is dropping the ball, making any prior opportunity irrelevant.

      1. A few incorrect disposals went unpunished today I think. Is the AFL relaxing the rules on it or is it genuine umpiring mistakes?

    2. Look on facebook right now. there are thousands of angry comments.

This isn’t disgruntled. This has degraded to absolutely farcical umpiring within 2 weeks of the start of the season.

      It’s shocking.

Not quite 2016 Western Bulldogs shocking, but it is so blatant that even neutral fans cannot stomach it and are freely venting their anger.

  15. Did anyone notice that neale had a poke at rohan first, or is he allowed to do it cause he is lachy . Rohan did swing back a bit harder.

    1

    14
    1. Yes he had a poke. doesn’t mean the level of retaliation was justified.

Personally I’d love to remove all the off the ball niggle but AFL doesn’t want to because it would see some of the star bullies removed every week.

  16. So I get home and see Lions were robbed but it hurts more when it was my POD Bailey that made the tackle and would have been rewarded massively!
Please don’t be a sign of how my season is going to end up

    1. It was all the more cruel for Bailey. He was tackled only a few minutes earlier with no prior opportunity, made every attempt he could to get rid of it and still got pinged for it. He’d be livid!

    1. Ok, I’ll bite Adam. How weak as piss do you have to be to join a footy forum just to be an obnoxious troll? To be honest mate, it sounds like you have some social problems that I think therapy would be useful for. Your comments may elicit some angry responses that give you a quick hit of glee, but those same commenters would probably feel pity for you in real life. Get help mate…

  18. Watch the video of the end on the AFL Website.

Two dead set certain free kicks and goals from within ten metres robbed from Brisbane by the Umpires.

1:45 to go. Jake Kolodjashnij (8) drags Charlie Cameron (23) down, holding his jumper well off the ball. Should have been a free kick and certain goal to Brisbane

1:01 Neale blatant throw on half back flank. Should have been a free to Geelong

0:29 Blicavs clearly tackled and drops the ball when tackled by Bailey. Absolutely dead set holding the ball. Certain goal for Brisbane from 5 metres out. Free kick not paid.

0:15 Ah Chee poor choice on the last inside 50 disposal and the game is over.
