Game Chat – Sydney v Gold Coast

Written by Thommo on July 18 2020

Where and when: SCG, Saturday 18th July at 4:35pm (AEST)

Last time they met: Rd 15, 2019: Sydney 14.9 (93) def Gold Coast 7.9 (51)

What it means for Sydney: Despite Buddy having plenty of time left in his contract, the Swans era of success appears to be over. A loss to perennial cellar-dwellers will confirm their decline.

What it means for Gold Coast: After a red-hot start to the season (the restarted season), the Suns have lost their momentum. They need to defeat the struggling Swans if they wish to prove their early success wasn’t simply a flash-in-the-pan.

Thommo Watch: I missed the Gold Coast match last week because, well, I just didn’t care, so I’ll be tuning in to see how this Izak Rankine kid goes!

Mottsy’s Tip: Gold Coast by 15 points.

  1. Who’s a bigger priority for me to move on for Rankine? The playing Fwd rookie with the JS and an ok BE, or the one out for several weeks again?

    TU – Taylor
    TD – Sturt

    1. If I go Taylor, have to play Rankine, Aarts and King straight up.

If I go Sturt out, I’m able to loop like Aarts or Taylor into King using Brander based on my setups in my team.

  2. Who should I trade out for Rankine – Sturt or McInerny?
Both are just being used for loopholes in fwd/mid atm

    TU – Sturt
    TD – McInerny

    1. McInerney.

Sturt is onnly out of the team through short term injury, McInerney has been dropped and can’t get back in even with all the injuries at the Swans.

  3. Time to see how Stoddart goes. He was my initial trade target for Starcevich but couldn’t go through with it. Was going to be a POD rookie so let’s see if I had the right mindset for rookie choice

      1. Soundin’ like someone who missed him, Cham!

Take your point though, but the 111 score last week means his JS is rock solid and will make decent coin. Had to come in if downgrading.

        1. Took a big punt
After Starc score I brought in Mills instead of Rankine . Could define my season .
Was around 8000 mark so need to take some risks .
Rankine looks good and may have to pick him up next week ableit a lot more to pay .
Hoping Aarts pulls a big score this week to ease the pain

Hindsight a wonderful thing and many rookies have imploded after week 1 .

    1. I was expecting Macpherson to break out this season, but he has dropped a mile this year compared to last. Really wonder what has happened to him

      1. Was tossing up between him and Greenwood pre season and chose wrong because I needed the extra 20k elsewhere. I “downgraded” Macpherson to Rankine before this round, couldn’t be happier to have him off my team.

  6. Stoddart getting a bit of the ball with 9 disposals but just poor efficiency. Most kicks have been marked by the opposition without much of a contest. So he hasn’t actually been that bad

  8. And due to a crap internet connection I didn’t get my Rankine trade done!

This season goes from bad to worse

  9. Rankine justifying the hype in this game which bucks the trend of players having amazing first games and disappointing second games.
Started with Greenwood this year which was probably one of my best moves in years. Hopefully he keeps it up for the rest of the season

      1. Does anyone know why the crows got rid of him? He’s always been a good footballer, something they seem to be lacking atm.

  11. If you’d have told me two months ago that Sydney v Suns would be a cracker, I would have slapped you.

One of the best games I’ve watched this year. So much talent and intensity.

    1. I said it in a post a couple weeks ago but I am just loving watching GC at the moment. So skilful and hard at it at the moment

      1. lock down was good for them
nightclubs & pubs were closed in party town
maybe they will they slide backwards into their previous lifestyle of vices post corona but they’re good to watch right now
maybe they got Rowell @ the perfect time

  12. Townsend -> Rankine next week maybe?????

TU – a fairly good option
TD – a sideways trade with an Ess player double no-no

  13. wonder if the swans are ruing their decision , not to give tom mitchell game time ,
looks to me , gws are doing the exact same thing with tom green ,
he’s going to make another club’s supporters very happy if gws don’t give him enough game time
