The big selection dilemma for the Pies remains their captain Pendlebury, who will undergo a fitness test ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Demons to determine whether he is available to return from a quad problem. The Demons lost Gawn, Viney, Lockhart and Neal-Bullen for the Roos clash on Sunday night, but the first three are all a good chance to return against Collingwood on Saturday. Melbourne will give Gawn until game day to prove his fitness for his bout with Brodie Grundy. Kozzy Pickett (ankle) and Aaron vandenBerg (cheekbone) were back in the line-up for the win over North Melbourne. – Marc McGowan

The Roos’ injury list blew out again in Sunday’s defeat to Melbourne. Bonar’s setback looks the most serious of the five from the Demons game, but Anderson, Tarrant, Walker and Daw will all be monitored. Brown and Hayden are a chance to return against Brisbane on Saturday. Macmillan is back in Victoria to be with his wife, Olivia, for the birth of their first child and it’s unclear when, or if, he will rejoin the team. – Marc McGowan

Early prognosis

The Power will put young gun Rozee on ice this week, already ruling him out of Friday night’s blockbuster clash with the Cats due to a heel injury. Ebert should return, having passed all concussion protocols, while Motlop is also a chance to feature after recovering from an ankle injury. Burton (quad) and Marshall (thumb) remain the best part of a month away. – Riley Beveridge

The Tigers suffered no new injuries in the loss to the Power last start and will boosted by the return of Trent Cotchin for Monday’s clash against Gold Coast. Houli is also available after completing his two weeks of quarantine. Astbury underwent an arthroscopy on his troublesome knee last Wednesday, but will look to build up his running this week. Prestia and Nankervis will be eyeing a return towards the end of the season. – Ben Sutton

Updated: Tuesday, August 11

Early prognosis

Kennedy and Brand are edging closer and should both resume skills training next week, then may be another fortnight away after that. The Swans haven’t provided a timeframe on when Franklin will be back and the likelihood of him sitting out the rest of the season is high. He is completing light skills at the moment. Colin O’Riordan (hip) and Michael Knoll (knee) returned from their respective layoffs in a scrimmage game last week. Sydney won’t play a practice match this week because it is serving a quarantine period in Perth. – Marc McGowan

West Coast Eagles

PLAYER INJURY ESTIMATED RETURN
 Harry Edwards  Concussion  Test
 Jamaine Jones  Hamstring  2-3 weeks
 Jeremy McGovern  Thumb  Test
 Mitch O’Neill  Back  Indefinite

 Jack Redden  Quad  Test
 Liam Ryan  Hamstring  Test
 Nathan Vardy  Ankle  Test
 Daniel Venables  Concussion  Season
 Francis Watson  Knee  Season
Updated: Thursday, August 6

Early prognosis

After missing two consecutive games with a fractured thumb, the added time between the Eagles’ next match should allow McGovern to play provided he gets through Saturday’s captain’s run. Ryan’s scans returned all clear, however he was reduced to running at training on Thursday and will be tested on Saturday. Redden is expected to be fit after missing the win over Geelong. The extra days should also have Vardy in consideration for minutes – most likely at scratch match level – however Jones has suffered a third hamstring setback. Edwards will be assessed after he was concussed early in his debut but is unlikely to play. – Mitch Cleary

Western Bulldogs

PLAYER INJURY ESTIMATED RETURN

Updated: Wednesday, August 12

Early prognosis

Schache has had a faster than expected recovery from a groin issue and has been bumped from two to three weeks to a test. Duryea has had a horrible run with his quad this year but looks set to return to full training in a week or two, as he and Suckling start some top speed running. Cordy picked up a chest muscle injury at training. – Jourdan Canil

  1. According to The Age today Gawn apparently has a PCL strain as well as having torn a muscle in relation to his upper back/shoulder. Even if he does get up for the game against Collingwood he’s not going to be 100%.
