Tom Lynch has been sent directly to the Tribunal for the incident with Jordon Butts on Sunday.
Match Review Officer has graded the incident intentional conduct, severe impact and high contact.
Lynch was also cited for two others incidents in the first half, including a charge of striking Butts earlier in the second term, which has triggered a $1500 fine that can be reduced to $1000 with an early guilty plea.
He was also fined $3125 – which can be reduced to $1875 with an early plea – for getting into a melee with Butts in the first quarter.
NMF COfficial update: “Despite copping a knock to his shoulder towards the end of Saturday’s game, Harry Sheezel has pulled up well. Sheezel will train as normal this week and is expected to run out to play against the Bulldogs.”
The AFL has now revealed that players with 4+ charges for making careless contact with an umpire in a 2-year window could face suspensions going forward.
AFL will now likely directly refer the player to the Tribunal. Larger fines an alternative.
The move comes after 63 instances of careless umpire contact have occurred season, after a total of 56 last year and just 20 in 2023.
Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell (four), St Kilda’s Jack Macrae (four) and Carlton’s Adam Cerra (three) are among the current players who have been cited three or more times for careless umpire contact in the past two years.
