Rare Gems – Round 13

Written by Freo Tragic on June 9 2022

Hello again. I hope you survived that first Bye unscathed. With the second Bye approaching I thought I’d stick with players that have already had their round 12 Bye. These players are all safe to get in this week in the knowledge that they should play both the next two matches. Due to the lack of solid options I’ve bent the rules a little and included a couple of guys that slightly exceed the 5% cut off. As we head towards finished teams I would rather talk about these guys, than some that are less relevant. So here go’s, I hope you enjoy Rare-ish Gems this week .

Legend: Name (Club, Price, 3 Rd avg, Ownership %, Bye)

DEFENDERS:

Adam Saad ( CARL, $485.100, 100.3, 4.5% )  Paying under $500K for a defender averaging a tad over a hundred is pretty good value. The king of the running bounce, this guy literally fits 3 bounces into a 20 meter run, before inevitably kicking it long to a team mate.  Thats 10 SC points in the blink of an eye. With all the hype around the resurgence of Docherty , Saad has slipped under the radar. There is some downside as he can succumb to injury occasionally, he missed round 3. Another  downside is he can sometimes have to play quite tight on the opposition’s best small forward this can lead to the odd stinker. His six 100 plus scores have been off set with 4 scores under 81 with the lowest being a 63 in round 9. If you have the cash, Doc or even Sinclair have also had their bye, and are probably safer options. But if you are stuck for cash and want that point of difference Saad could be your man.

MIDFIELDERS:

Josh Kelly ( GWS, $619.600, 137.3, 8.8% ) I know there are many coaches that have put a line through Josh, due to being burnt before. I also know that there’s a few of you that would love that point of difference that could help win a league match up or two, helping you make finals on the way home. Statistics say that only one, maybe two coaches in your league will own Josh. The Rolls Royce of Midfielders is no longer cheap , but hell he is purring like a Mo Fo. Back as a full-time midfielder under the new GWS coaching regime. He has a three round average of 137 and a dream match up in North this week. If you’ve got the money and a spare injury trade just in case. Get on Jelly and put him in your Captains calculations this weekend.

Sam Walsh ( CARL, 629.500, 135, 6.9%)  There’s not too much bad you can say about this guy. It doesn’t seem to matter where he plays, he just keeps running and running and inevitably finds the ball. With the full compliment of mids now fit at Carlton, It seems Sam has been squeezed out of centre bounce. Have no fear. The plan seems to be send Cripps to take the centre bounce, and then let him drift forward. He is then replaced by the speedy and reliable runner in Walsh. A three round average of 135 and fresh off a break, Walsh would be a welcome addition to any SC side. If you can afford the high price tag, I fully recommend getting him in this week. I am !

Zac Merrett ( ESS, $520.700, 96.3, 1.1% ) I won’t go into too much detail as Abs has Zac covered in his Fallen Premiums article this week. Basically if you need a cheap M8 , Zac is your man.

RUCKS:

Bryn Teakle (Forward ) (Port, $102K , 0.0, 3.7% ) Finally a $102K ruck forward. I’m not sure he gets many games , but this guy actually makes a perfect loophole even if he doesn’t .Port have a heap of Sunday games in the back half of the year. I still need Hayes on-field for …( round 14 hopefully ) but as soon as he’s done, I will be welcoming Teakle to the Dashing Donkeys. I’m sure a heap of you will do the same if you haven’t already.

FORWARDS:

Nothing to see here. If you need to trade Bailey Smith, maybe get a midfielder, then look at one of the other Doggies or Swans next week to complete your Forward line.

Well.. thats it for another edition of Rare Gems. This looks like the worst of the Bye rounds so don’t forget to say your Prayers to the SuperCoach gods prior to selection as they seem to be angry already this week. Wishing you all the best of luck, and may you all get at least 18 warm bodies to field this weekend.

Thanks for reading

Cheers FT.

  1. Those 3 midfielders are all great targets this week. Think they’ll all be popular trade ins.

  2. Gidday FT,
will be trading in Doc with leaves me Daicos at D6. Have the $ & trades left which can allow me to do Daicos to Saad until I can do Saad to Stewart at his cheapest price. Byes are no problem. Thoughts please FT/ anyone.

    1. Hey WG

Sounds like a solid plan if you have the trades. I have kept Whitfield at D6 with a similar plan. Hopefully getting him to Stewart when he bottoms out.

Depending on the bounce back games Stewart could be as low as $550K in three weeks. His BE is 144 but he still has that 174 in his price cycle.

      1. Thanks FT, stating the obvious Stewart is a “must” when you check his scoring prior to last wk. Whitfield was another on my radar depending on teams tonite & his position which I take with a grain of salt.
What will you do if Whitfield pumps out a 120+ this week.

  3. Yeah Thanks Roo Bloke.

I would love all three. I’m going Walsh this week as I feel he’s the safer option.

  4. This is where I wonder how Prestia would go as he is in less than 1000 teams.
He is averaging 94.9 and priced at 498k, but when looking at those scores 2 of those rounds were a 42 and 59. Those scores came when he was subbed out of both games, thus only spending 25% and 55% TOG for those games.
Every other game has been above 100 except for 1 being a 97.

He is in the majority of the CBAs for Richmond, so I then wonder if he is a genuine pick, with his last 2 games being a 126 and 114. He may be slightly risky due to injury, but doesn’t need 30 possession games for 100 points. He has averaged over 100 many seasons ago, so can he do that this season?

  5. Wow Nato Prestia would take some huge balls or a heap of trades.

The guy just gets injured so often. Twice already this year and multiple time s over the last few years. His injury list is longer than Ned Kelly charge sheet ! One of those early injuries can really ruin a good week. I would personally avoid. I know he’s cheap but I would pay up for a Merrett.
