Captaincy Candidates – Round 13

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 9 2022

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

PARISH v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 107, 62, 129 (99 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 128, 133, 97 (119 av.)

The Blues are the competition’s #1 contested possession and centre clearance side and therefore pretty unappealing to VC into, however the confluence of a week off, a review and rivalry match up should see Parish fire on all cylinders for 130.

CRIPPS v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 65, 81, 89 (78 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 114, 119, 132 (121 av.)

A week off will have done a physical, contest first player like Cripps some good. The Dons, along with the Roos and Eagles, automatically gift opposition MIDs 120s but expect the big stage to position Cripps for 140 if he’s out of the cringey one-out ruck role. Similarly, Walsh and Hewett also make for great options – Walsh especially!

BRAYSHAW v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 91, 48, 150 (96 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 113, 94, 134 (114 av.)

If someone taught this kid the elusive concept of disposal efficiency, he’d be a Top 4 MID no questions and would have gone 150+ last week. 39 touches and ground coverage was magnificent but did himself no favours with 9 clangers, 2 OOTF, 61% DE and sprayed a shot at goal for just the 113. That’s pretty poor conversion for so many touches. Hopefully he cleans that up because a Hawks match up Perth is ripe pickings for a 135.

Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 118, 72, 79 (90 av.)
  • L3 @ G: 164, 123, 117 (135 av.)

On paper you’d think he surely gets some defensive attention, likley from Ross or a kid as a run with, but after he casually went 160 tagged against the Giants I’m too scared to omit him! Can grind out a ton with a tag and 120+ if the Saints play it straight up.

SATAN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 108, 137, 114 (120 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 134, 113, 135 (127 av.)

Had some rotating attention from Rowbottom and still ground out a handsome 134 as second fiddle to Maxxy last week. Despite increasing competitiveness, the Pies remain a leaky MID side. Satan a lock for 130.

GAWN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 123, 99, 153 (125 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 198, 118, 82 (134 av.)

Put on one of the all time ruck and SC performances last week, hot damn! 28 touches, 23 contested (yes, 23 contested!), 30 HOs, 9 marks and 3 goals if you don’t mind! Came after a month that included 3x 70-80s, so repaid the faith big time, and should go to the well again vs Cameron on the big stage. Fires for 125 minimum.

Steer Clear

DARCY v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 183, 129, 139 (150 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 59, 134, 178 (124 av.)

Steer clear if Meek named to avoid a low-ton but be prepared to consider a VC if he’s flying solo, indicating Darcy can handle the #1 ruck duties after a dirty split and limp outing last week.  Sails to 130+ if he’s handled the week’s preparations.

Smoky Pick

KELLY v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 147, 89, 128 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 124, 148, 94 (122 av.)

Comes as the obligatory “Whoever’s VS-ing North” option but Jelly’s also hit a pretty rich vein of form recently for the 9% of coaches and counting who have him, with scores of 131, 125, 156, 85, 153 & 93 over the last six weeks. Will be really comfortable for another 140+ this weekend against a soft opponent and has gone to work at Marvel before.

Verdict

Satan a definite C, lock that in. If Darcy is flying solo, I think it’s worth the dice roll given his ceiling and the Hawks as a ruck opponent. If not, I fancy Neale to yet again defy an incoming tag and pop off.

  1. Thanks GD.

Once again a must read. With the likely carnage this week, it makes it even more important to nail that Captain selection.

If all goes to plan I will VC new recruit Walsh, into either Oliver or Gawn as Captain.I will just have see what’s happening with my matchups.

    Thanks again

    1. Hey, FT.

Yeah, probably the most important VC/C week so far this season. Absolutely love the Walsh VC, do it.

      Good luck!

    1. Oh, yes L&L. Tigers a great midfield to VC into, give Wines a look if you like these numbers:

      WINES v Tigers

      L3 v Tigers: 106, 189, 95
      L3 @ MCG: 100, 98, 97

Doesn’t get out to the G a lot but the Tigers tend to let off large MID scores win or loss.

      Good luck!

      1. Thanks GD, Oliver should be a safe C option but Wines has the potential to go big I feel. Hopefully another 189.

  2. Cogs or Merrett VC GD?

Beautiful work, best resource for VC/C candidates, and it covers all the necessities in a concise way every week!

No idea -> Oliver/Gawn as it stands on my end.

  3. Thanks GD, excellent write up as ever!

Looking at Hewett into Oliver at this point.

Have been eyeing off Walsh as a trade in target this week, but the initial team announcements have put that on hold (for now).

    Cheers,
    Wayne

    1. Changed my mind…as a mad bombers supporter and going to the game…I’m putting the v on Parish. About time something black and red did the right thing by me.
      Cripps holders…jump on…160 for sure now !!!

    1. Hey, Tinka.

I’d probably be going for MIDs this week given the matchups.

Here are his stats if you’re still interested:

      SICILY v Dockers

      L3 v Dockers: 97, 60, 104
      L3 @ OS: 50, 97, 124

  6. Hello GD,

Josh Kelly v Roos and check his below CBA Stats.

    Josh Kelly’s CBA’s:

    Under Cameron
    14.1 per game – 3rd

    Under McVeigh
    24.5 – 1st

Thanks for all your work 🙂

  7. Is it really wet in Melbourne today?

BOM says 70% chance of rain – but rain is easing?

I am also wondering whether to captain Gawn or Oliver – and ideally it would be Gawn as my opponent doesn’t have him (and I need to make up some points).

Just not sure if the wet will affect the big man negatively – or does more bounce downs in the wet equate to more points for him?

Appreciate any thoughts from this great community 🙂

    1. Nah, it won’t rain. Actually a bit of sun coming out.

As for the Gawn/Satan dilema, both are named in this article. So give their stats another peruse and then, ultimately, go with your gut, Brett.

      Both excellent options.
