  1. Defence-

    Midfield-
Macrea, Steele, Oliver, Neale, Jhf, Daicos, Mead, Stephens, Goater, Tsitas
    Ruck-
    Gawn, Grundy, Comben
    Forward-
Dunkley, Heeney, Butters, Cogs, Curnow, Holland, Kelly, De’konning

  2. Dashing Donkeys Mid Feb.

I’m still holding out hope I can start 5 Premo mids.

This plan relies on JHF getting Forward status and or Daicos getting Defender status. This should take some pressure off the Forward and Defensive rookies.

This side has $29.300 left in the kitty and is projected 1793.

    Lloyd . Dawson . Whitfield . K Coleman . Kemp . Chesser .
    O’Drizzle. Skinner .

    Macrea . Steele . Titch . Walsh . Neale . JHF . Daicos . Erasmus.
    McDonald . Clark . Tsitas.

    Darcy . Grundy . Comben

    Dunkley . T Thomas . Cogs . Curnow . Maguiness . Hollands.
    DeKonning . Butler*

*Butler is my early loop that I hope will get games later in the year. I really don’t want to waste a rookie spot on a loop with no chance to play. ( One of our rookies will get dropped no doubt ) He will be moved to the midfield bench when JHF ( hopefully ) gets Forward status.

I’ve looked at Short or Ridley at D3 and will probably swap out Whitt if funds allow. I like to keep a bit of bank for now to help with the inevitable rookie shuffle.
The other major change is Thomas in for Butters. I nearly selected him late last year and his better durability and track reports have got him over the line at this stage.

    1. Delicious, FT.

Really rate the Thomas pick, reportedly having a bumper preseason. Only concern is how many players there are vying for MID minutes at North; Powell and Phillips coming into their 2nd years, arrival of JHF, Goater & Gwood and then Simpkin, LDU and Cunners at some stage.

Do they just give Thomas the straight MID role? I’m not sure.

For now, I’ve got Butters. Already shown a ceiling, same trajectory and breakout potential as Thomas but an easier midfield to break into – also has a better bye.

Forwards going to interesting this season, no doubt.

      Great team again, FT.

      1. Most of the players we were watching at north are on mid rotation and Thomas looks like he’s now mostly mid.

  3. Draft 2.0, a few minor tweaks in the last couple of weeks.
Current line up with some thoughts:

DEF: Lloyd, Ridley, Short, Milera, O’Driscoll, Skinner [NWU, McDonagh]
Notes: Won’t be changing the first three until pre-season aside from injury, Ridley and Short look excellent value. Milera might become Coleman or Whitfield according to structural changes, but if he has a decent role looks like good value too.

MID: Macrae, Steele, Mitchell, Walsh, Neale, Constable, JHF, Daicos [Pedlar, MacDonald, Clark]
Notes: Mac and Steele have been locked since day 1. Mitchell and Neale will outscore their price, and Walsh is simply a gun. Happy to spend on the three expensive rookies (including Constable), but may cut one if a cheaper option arises.

    RUC: Grundy, McInerny [Hayes]
Notes: OMc is my one current concern, he could become Darcy by Round 1 if I can shift some $$ around.

FWD: Dunkley, Butters, Gresham, Coniglio, Kelly, Comben [Hollands, Parker]
Notes: Dunks will be F1 if he stays fit, no question. Butters has no ceiling, so I’m getting on now, but he could be the one to go to facilitate the OMc to Darcy change.

    Keen for any feedback!

    1. Superb, Bozza.

Great structure and excellent premo selections.

I was also juiced on the Big O until this news of him potentially having a FWD split with Fort turned me off him. Owned him through the second half of last season and needs to be that #1 without a second fiddle, he isn’t adept up FWD.

Definitely monitor his role through the rest of the preseason before committing to him at R2.

    Lloyd Hall Crisp

  5. A few changes to my initial draft and I’m not sure if this team is legal because I don’t have Gould in my pre-season defence.

Def: Crisp, Dawson, Whitfield, Sicily, Chesser, McDonough (McGuiness, Dean)

Mid: Steele, Oliver, Laird, Neale, Rowell, JHF, Daicos, Ward (Stephens, Clark, ESmith)

    Ruc: NicNat, Grundy (Hayes)

Fwd: Dunkley, Heeney, Rayner, Cogs, Curnow, Rachele (Hollands, Parker)

    $2.3k itb

I’ve gone deep in Def because of lack of decent rookies.
Mids – Steele and Oliver are no-brainers. Laird is a huge POD. Neale and Rowell are hugely underpriced. High priced rookies to complete.
Ruc – A mix of set and forget with another eye on the byes. If Hayes plays I will have two rucks for each round of the byes. If he doesn’t then I’ve got at least one ruck in each round of the byes.
Fwd – a bit of mid price madness but the upside could be huge. A couple of them just need to make money early in order to take advantage of R6 DPP changes.

    1. Third draft in the salary cap version…

Gone with higher priced rookies / ‘mid-pricers’ until JS is more understood and locked-in. I’ll be happy to go through a ‘one-up, one-down’ exercise prior to the season if it means more ‘Premos’.

      I count 11 keepers, 6 mid-pricers, 5 on-field rooks with $15.2 Bank

D: Lloyd, Hall, Whitfield, Milera, Bowey, Kemp (NWM, Chesser)
M: JMac, Steele, Clarey, Neale, JHF, Daicos, Rachele, Ward (O’D, Clarke, Tsitas)
      R: Grundy, ROB (Hayes)
F: Dunks, Dusty, Gresh, Coleman, Cogs, Brodie (Hollands, Parker)

Keen for your thoughts on v 3.0 of Second22

About to head down to the coast for the day, double checking I’d packed everything and thought to myself “what about Sicily as D4 depth?”.

Will let that percolate over the car ride lol. About to roll out. Tty all, Monday.

      Take care.

      1. I did that exact move during the week Gunboat – its cost me 5 to now 4 mid premiums (Walsh became Rowell) …will see how long I keep him there. And I do also find myself making 2 changes a night – just tinkering to see what feels right.

    1. Think I saw Bowey was injured recently and out for a while.
Side looks pretty good- we’re all wondering about the forward ‘lotto’ this year. Every cheaply has had an injured past! Good luck!

  9. Hi all, I’ve made a few changes since I’ve posted my last team last month. Mainly a structure change from 3-5-2-2 to a 4-4-2-2. Reasons being for the amount of good playing rookies in the midfield and the premium options in defence.
    ITB: $23.8k

Def: LLoyd, Crisp, Dawson, Ridley, Chesser, O’Driscoll (Skinner, Dean)

Mid: Macare, Steele, Oliver, Neale, JHF, N.Daicos, Ward, Hobbs (MacDonald, Clark, Tsitas)

    1. I like the selection of NikNak but generally the West Coast plan is to nurse him and give limited time on field early in the season and increase late in the season. A better option after the byes

  11. Team V.2

Def: LLoyd, Crisp, Dawson, Ridley, Sinn, Skinner (Gould, Dean)

Mid: Macrae, Steele, Oliver, Mitchell, Rowell, JHF, N.Daicos, MacDonald (O’Driscoll, , Hamilton, Tsitas)

    Ruck: Darcy, Grundy (S.Hayes)

Fwd: Dunkley, Butters, Cogs, Curnow, Comden, Parker (Kelly, Motlop)

Query I have is whether after a year of injuries last year can Rowell become the ball magnet we saw in his start to AFL? Do I need a Rayner/Coleman in my team at the expense of Rowell and downgrade him to a Ward/Hobbs type player?

    Comments appreciated.

    1. Hey Mick,
Sinn’s been talked up and talked about and no doubt he’ll get games but I’m struggling to see how him and Skinner break into Port’s loaded backline.
I think we just gotta wait for the pre season games and see what they produce (including Rowell and Rayner)and all the other rookies and then when teams are dropped for round 1 it becomes a mad sçramble to hopefully finalize ur team.
      Just my opinion
      Good luck mate

  12. Over the past 2 years covid has made SuperCoach
    f@€#&*g frustrating ( but interesting).
This year the AFL has said the show will go on.
So, how long do you expect a covid affected player
to have off(considering isolation, fatigue, match fitness)?
If it spreads throughout the team, even with top up players, can u imagine dreamtime at the G.
Ess. A’s vs Rich. B’s in front of 80,000 fans.
Or fingers crossed I’d love to see Collingwood field a B team for the ANZAC day clash.
Also, will the Brownlow become the best and healthiest medal?
I think we’re in for another interesting year.
    Good luck everyone

      1. Yeah mate the forward line is a little light at the moment, just don’t feel comfortable shorting cash from the midfield.

Feel like Steele, Macrae and Oliver are must haves and going to be too hard to upgrade to later. That leaves Neale who is potentially at his lowest price this season.

That leaves just rooks are these feel like the safest (so far) for JS and scoring potential.

I could look at moving a backmen out, but it feels like the cows/rookies just aren’t there to support it.

The forward line at least has some potential to make me some money.

    1. Hey Jesse.

The bones of this team are fine I would just adjust a few of your Premo selections.

Corr is not really SC relevant, I would swap him out for K Coleman or Milera.

Walsh will miss the first few weeks so will need to be replaced I would prefer Steele as he’s a very safe Captain option. Titch is fine if you don’t have the funds.

I would also look at starting someone other than Stringer. He has already missed chunks of the preseason with injuries and is more of an upgrade target at this stage.

You could even look at downgrading Stringer to a Curnow and then upgrading Cord to a Premo Defender.

Best of luck and happy planning.

Still pondering whether Neale is a must have? Would love to sneak a POD in the midfield such as Kelly or Brayshaw. Let me know thoughts.

    1. I’d pick Neale as much because of his ownership as his price. perhaps look for POD’s as the season progresses.

  18. Hi Community.

Been playing with the sub 300k midprice madness in the structure.
I am looking at Berry, Cogs, Gresham, Raynor and Curnow mainly (maybe Coleman).
Come 24 hours prior to lockout I feel I will need this to be 3.

    Which 3 guys?
    Cheers.

    3

    1. I need to see Cogs to find out if he’s cooked or not.

He’s not been showing big things, but some clubs seem to wax lyrical about everyone and their dog, others play their cards pretty tight.

Brisbane are telling us that every player on their list, even the fringe players, will be a superstar this year, just as an example, while GWS won’t even tell us who their number one ruck will be.

Right now, for me, the only one I’m treating as a lock if fit and named for round 1 is Rayner, but I have three of the above (cogs, curnow) and am tossing up a fourth (coleman) due to lack of info about one of my other midpricers.

I don’t think you’re on a wrong path there, and I think 3 of them is about the right number to have.

Much more cuts into how many premium rookies you have, and if you go too few midpricers your balance between a guaranteed 22 starters and your number of cash growth players starts to look ordinary.

I’d say you need around 3 or 4 midpricers, 3 or 4 premo rookies, and need to rely on at the most about 3 123k rookies to make the field each week (although these 3 don’t have to be the same ones each week). You hope that 5 or 6 play, but you only field your best 3 of those.

You hope for more, obviously, but if you can field 23 or 24 each week and use dpp to fill the holes that’s about as good as you are likely to get.

If this season goes like most others, half of your round 1 budget rookies will not be playing by round 4, either due to burnout, injury, questionable form or returning best 22 players.

      2

      2
        1. You need 22 playing reliably each week. 13 premos, even stretching to 14 premos and 16 budget rookies will not provide that.

          1

          2
          1. you won’t be able to start 14 genuine premiums this year, rookies won’t be there. Even 13 will be a struggle.

look at 12 Ubers and work around who is available in the rookies and the cheaper mid-pricers

            3

            0
            1. With the extra trades being at around 10-12 UP seems better.

if you have 10 keepers finishing your team will cost 24 trades and that will still give you 3 rookie corrections and your typical 8 sideswaps.

plus with less rookies on the field there is less urgency to upgrade and you have less money parked in players with neutral cash gen

  19. If there were no defence rookies, (ie < JHF) selected to play Rd 1,

    Would you;

TU Fully premium your defence or,
TD Select some “mid price” so you could play premos elsewhere?

    0

    16
    1. I’m thinking a 3 premiums, 2 midprice stepping stones and 1 rookie 2 rookies bench.

otherwise 4 premiums 4 rookies if the rookies are there

after rd 6 Daicos will probably be D6 with that M/D DPP if all goes well so just use him as D6 and look to upgrade the whole def at the byes

  23. Been playing with my team a bit more.

TU Parish, Thomas + more bargain rookies
    TD Titch, Rayner + more spare cash/ 2 x 150K rookies

TU gets an extra potential keeper but feels forced. Better cash gen options from cheaper rookies since they have to score less to make money…
TD seems safer and Titch seems underpriced….

    1. If it changes the math in the Parish/Thomas team i only have 2 rookies below 123k.
Greg Clark and a 102k loop.

  25. Hi all. Here is a team I have been playing around with. MID price with flexibility.
$8,700 left in bank. Please peruse and pull apart.

    1. If you want a midprice R/F in the 400k range probably better to handcuff Gawn and Jackson.

Melbourne will be a good team so they will both get the added benefit of hitting to Melbourne’s midfield and kicking goals while resting forward

Also if you are going for a midprice heavy lineup and have 2D/F rookies then adding a midprice D/F as cover seems smart. same as with crisp D/M probably worth finding space for a D/M rookie just in case you need the cover.

      2

  26. Hey all, still 4 weeks to go so I’m just flicking and flipping players around and trying different things until preseason games start and we have a better understanding of where we are.
What do u think of this team.
    D-Lloyd, Crisp,Sicily, O’driscoll,Gould, Mcdonagh,(Boyd,Dean)
    M-Steele, Titch,Tracca,Neale, Cripps, JHF,Daicos,Stephens (Hobbs,G.Clarke,Tsitas)
    R-Gawn ,Grundy (Combden)
    F-Dunks ,Heeney,Butters, Gresham,Raynor,Cogs,(Holland, Parker)
Backline is maybe 1 premo short,Cripps is a ?, Gawn im still in 2 minds and the forward line is probably a car crash waiting to happen .
It looks great on paper but in reality it’s……………….

  27. I seem to change my team every other day:

lloyd, hall, sicily, aleer, skinner, dean (gould, mcDonagh)

macrae, steele, oliver, crisp, neale, berry, JHF, clark (smith, hollands, uwland)

    darcy, marshall (williams)

dunkley, duncan, butters, coniglio, curnow, kelly (long, parker)

swapped walsh out for crisp when i heard about his ankle and my rucks bother me but i feel like taking a chance outside grundy/gawn

    4

    0
    1. Crisp (D/M) should start in Def and swap one of your Def rookies for a mid rookie

if you don’t want Gawn/Grundy how about ….

Darcy, Nic Nat ? as a set/forget alternative?

or for non Premo, Witts/Draper are priced Well. swapping Marshall down would give you enough for Daicos…

      or a Reeves/Lynch handcuff.

or if feeling really brave/bold, Williams at r2 with Comben r3 and another R/F or Xerri (likely week 6 DPP) as cover

      4

      0
    1. Wouldn’t really be selecting him as a POD, his ownership is irrelevant.

The Serong pick comes down to whether you’ll think he’ll breakout this season.

For me, it’s a pass. Definitely improves this year, especially with the space in the midfield (Cerra gone & Fyfe ailing), but not sure he can put enough on his previous year’s average of 82.9 to end up a viable SC pick. Would need 30 as he’s at that awkward price where he kinda has to be a keeper.

Also his trajectory isn’t that inspiring. 81.1 his first year, then 82.9 the next. I get Freo dick around with his TOG and role but plus 1.7 is hella low for a high draftee like Serong.

See what FT thinks, he should be finished painting his face purple.

      3

      1
    2. Serong was arguably BOG in Fremantle’s latest match sim.

Does that relate to becoming an elite midfielder? Not sure at this stage.
I really rate the kid and expect him to excel in the future. You could take a punt on it being this year but maybe a year too soon.

FT would be best to give an expert commentary.

      1. My thoughts on Serong ..

I still think it’s a bit early to expect Serong to Breakout in 2022. It’s only his third year in the system and very few breakout this early. He also is playing for a side that as much as I wish it wasn’t so, Freo will most likely lose more often than they win.

The way Freo manage his time on ground , my guess is he’s not a natural endurance athlete like a Whitfield / Walsh type.
He is a natural footballer, and can find the ball. I just think he still needs to work on his tank. I also think to help develop his game he will occasionally be given run with roles. He did a number on Zerrett in R9 last year keeping him to 64 points. I think he will continue to play on some of the smaller type mids going forward.

        Keeping all this in mind..

I’m fully expecting an improvement on last year , I just think somewhere in the mid to late 90’s is more realistic than him averaging over 100.

As I said in my Preview, He is a great Draft option. I wouldn’t bother with him in Classic.

  28. Might be a bit of a stretch, but with Walsh out does Hewett become a little more attractive? Was slated to play a defensive MID role either way but now he probably gets a better, more consistent CBA load and the green light to accumulate on his own.

    Will be watching him closely.

    1. Gunboat

If you pick Hewitt it’s for the year. ( he is still a little pricey for a stepping stone) He may start on fire with Walsh out, but what happens when he returns ?

      3

      1. Yeah, that’s what’s tricky.

Need to see what Carlton’s midfield mix is looking like. See who’d get the chop first.

        2

        0
        1. They seem to have given up on the Cripps forward experiment, so I fully expect him back in the middle full time. As well as Hewitt and Cerra you have fringe guys like Setterfield and even Ed Curnow that might get some midfield time with Walsh sidelined. Can’t wait to see the mix as well.

  29. How am I travelling? Rookies on bench to be locked..35k bank.

Lloyd, Rich, Crisp, Sicily, Dean, Odrisc
Macrae, Touk, Laird, Neale, JHF, Daicos, Hobbs, Erasmus
    Darcy, Grundy
    Dunkley, Butters, Heeney, Cogs, Curnow,Parker

    2
    1. Neither.

Bonner not SC relevant and Lukosious slated to play up FWD and even at HB he has his issues.

If you’re set on a sub 450k DEF there’s Sicily, Howe and maybe Hewett but honestly, just find the extra cash to get a proper DEF premo. Would only be going one of those sub 450k options for depth.

      14

      1. Agree GD

Not like there’s a shortage of gun defenders either. Not worth taking a punt on a sub 450 option when you can scrape to Ridley, Short or Whitfield.

  30. Thoughts on Keidean Coleman vs Jarrod Berry ?
Berry at his best should be a reliable scorer with his intensity and tackling but they are talking up Coleman’s preseason and half backs can pick up some easy points…. Similar price points, however KC has dual position

    1. The Merchant.

I’m leaning towards K Coleman at this stage. There seems to be a heap of Midfield rookie options and few Defender / Forward rookies. KC’s DPP will be very handy to swing him around to help cover both Forward and Defence.

With a whole swag of Forward Midpricers I currently have him at D4

  31. Hi lads,

Would love some thoughts on the team so far…

BACK: Lloyd, Short, Whitfield, Sicily, Chesser, McDonagh (O’Driscoll, Dean)

MID: McCrae, Steele, Mitchell, Neale, Caldwell, JHF, Daicos, Ward (G.Clark, C.Parker, J.Tsitas)

    RUCK: Darcy, Grundy (Hayes)

FWD: Dunkley, T.Thomas, Butters, Cogs, Rachele, E.Hollands (Comben, Skinner)

    $25,400 left over.

    Feedback appreciated!!

    1. Going strong in the forward line could pay dividends due to a lack of rookies atm.

If possible I’d try find funds to turn Sicily into Crisp or Hall. Besides that there’s nothing I’d really change ATM

  33. Been thinking about how to bring Sicily in as he seems to be the Aron Hall of this season…

TU Sicily, Gawn, Jackson, Stephens (160k rookie)
TD Bowey, Darcy, Grundy, 123k rookie

    3
  34. Ok I think I’m ready! Thoughts?

    Lloyd Crisp Dawson

    (O’Driscoll Clark Uwland)

    Darcy Grundy (comben)

Not much left in bank but pretty content.

  35. Anyone got insight on the Eagles forward line? Does the house of cards open up any rookie names for the watchlist?

Does it improve or harm the outlook for #2 ruck Williams?

Eagles fans had better hope Nic Nat stays fit or they’re in a serious pickle…

  36. Current team that i think will be set for a while. Cash remaining $100 so i got every drop of value out of this team. Should get a bit of extra cash in the bank via rookie downgrades if some cheaper rookies IE Charlie Dean ect start to pop in the preseason.

Def: Lloyd, Dawson, Ridley, Sicily, Rioli, 123k rookie, 123k rookie, 123k rookie

Mids Steele, Touk, Titch, Neale, JHF, Daicos, Ward, NWM, 123k rookie, 123k rookie, 102k rookie loop.

    Rucks: Darcy, Grundy, Hayes

FWDS. Dunks, Butters, Rayner, Cogs, Curnow, 123k rookie, 123k rookie, 123k rookie.

Think i set my team here until the rookie shuffle. Have 10-12 premo’s (depending on how you feel about Sicily/Butters) all of whom i feel are undervalued, plus A few mid price stepping stones/ premium rookies who should make a good amount of cash and have guaranteed playing time.

only 2 cheap rookies on the field and should have 3 playing options (hopefully more with DPP) to shift around.

  37. Sam Walsh out for at least the first month of the season.

Does this make a heavily discounted and apparently fit Cripps a viable option?

T/U: Definite improvement on his scoring and price
    T/D: Get another TRUE premium

    2

    11
    1. All the SCT Master Yoda’s have been consistent with strong advice against players in that price range – and I’m guessing they have a bit a history supporting those recommendations. But, if we’re going to play with fire, you wouldn’t risk it at M4 would you? Even at M5 or M6, surely it’s emerging players like Simpkin, Thomas, and Serong in a slightly higher price range that have more upside than the downward trend a banged-up Cripps has returned over the last two seasons…

I’m playing around with the idea of Simpkin at M6 instead of an injury prone Dunkley at F1 – which sounds good in theory on Simpkin’s ceiling, until you make the swap and you’re staring at a potential disaster in the forward line…

      4

      1. Also gotta consider the “forward experiment” Cripps which also hurt his scoring was to cover deficiencies an that area, and lighten the load on Cripps while playing injured.

Curnow’s return and the loss of Walsh, along with Cripps’ recovery from shoulder injury seem to suggest the forward experiment is over for Cripps.

Obviously, additional injuries may see that change again.

        3

        1. Fair points HH – I didn’t really consider the time forward. I reckon Voss will have a great influence on the game attitudes of the hard nuts too, so if his body is right he’s worth considering at $455K. Whether he’s in my SC team or not I would love to see him get back to his best. Blues games are a better spectacle when he’s firing that’s for certain.

          5

          0
          1. Basically I see it as a tossup between Heeney and Cripps for the same coin (or similarly priced Thomas or Butters), using dpp.

Of those options at least Cripps has some premium history.

            3

            1
      2. The issue is…. Can they get top 6/8 or can they make 150k. In the case of a 450-500k player if they make that then they are top 8

If you get it right you save two trades. If you get it wrong it costs you the cash gen they failed to make, and at that price cash gen is hard to come by so it could cost you 100k in addition to having less money to fill out your side and potentially missing out on players who will help you or will be top 8

SuperCoach is a game of risk vs reward and this is seen by most as needlessly risky. It can work ie if you started with Darcy Parish last season but typically you will have the opportunity to trade for these players at 500k if they work out as fallen premiums

If you are worried about Dunkley at least start a 450k fwd premium so the score they need to be top 6 isn’t as high as a mid

        1

  38. Oscar Allen now joining the sidelines too. With no Darling and Kennedy old and perpetually injured…

    T/U: Bailey J R3 / Comben F8 combo
T/D: Mayes still R3, Comben still F8, no link.

    6

    1. Williams high price makes things difficult to work out. Won’t make cash as fast as other rookies/vets in that price range on other lines.

Seems like his best value is as a playing R2 if you think the 400k between him and an UP can be better spent elsewhere.

      3

      0
      1. I’m looking at starting the Williams/Comden dpp combo. Williams high price is really only an extra $100k as you have to start someone at r3. Also, with other rucks being Grundy and Draper, if all things work out, I may have two rucks for each bye without having to trade.

        0

        0
        1. For me i just don’t like having too many 200k players on the bench. Thats money that could be used as points on the field. assuming you use Comben as R3. Thats a 102k difference.

If you are using the swing then it’s really more like Gawn/Draper/Comben with Williams at F5 or F6 and then he’s in competition with Curnow, Brodie, Constable and even Caldwell/Berry/Rayner to some degree in terms of points added to your team.

If almost seems a bit pointless to downgrade to Draper from a UP Ruck and then spend half of that extra cash on a 3rd string ruck who won’t get on your field

  39. Here’s my post Sam Walsh take. Pity as I was really happy with my last team.

    R: Darcy, Grundy (Hayes)
F: Heeney, Butters, Rayner, Cogs, Curnow, Hollands (Maginness, Comben)

        1. Hmm Yeah I noticed alot of ppl opting for 4 defenders 4 mids but will it be the right Avenue my gut says it’s still 3-5-2-3 but will be a wait and see on the rookies I guess.

      1. Hey Mav

        Nice to see you back.

I really want to start 5 uber mids but its looking less and less likely as the Mid rookies seem way more prevalent than any other line.

The consensus seems to go to 4 Ubers with 4 Premo defenders and a few midpricers Forward.

I think Cogs is a must have, ( Leon said he’s playing midfield ) and needs to be on field forward. The other highly owned cheapie is Hollands and he’s not even a sure thing to line up R1 at this stage. I would also consider some one like Curnow at F4-5

Best of luck and happy planning.

        1. Thanks for the input FT always appreciated.

Yeah I think I have to just bite the bullet on cogs I’m not sold on him but he’s at that ownership % where if he goes nuts your in trouble. But that’s Good to hear he’s alot more midfield this season.

Hearing good things out of Carlton about Charlie. He going too be last year’s Joe daniher? He might be a wait and see yet not sure how id find the $$$. But will monitor him. Cheers FT

  45. Thinking about the Bailey Williams situation…

I think the best use of him is a Premo- Williams – Pruess ruck group with Comben at F6-8

This group likely gives you the cheapest viable ruck group as well as cover through all the byes and should make you hopefully 500-600k

Seems better for league then overall as in overall teams will be racing to hit full premium as early as possible using the trade boosts.

If all goes Well Pruess + Williams should get you to 800k and enough cash for 1 UP ruck and some cash left over in round 15 but you have trade boost as a get out of jail free card if you really need to reach and do a 3/1 trade.

Saves you about 300k vs full Premo rucks.

Not sure what you’d use the extra money for maybe full midprice madness

    0

    1
    1. JSG.

I’m not sure how you have Pruess and Williams making all that cash ??

.Firstly there’s still no evidence that Pruess has the Number one role at GWS. If Preuss does manage to play, he will most likely be sharing the ruck duties, so no guarantee to score that well there either. With his injury history I just can’t see GWS risking playing Preuss as their only ruck. If he goes down early that’s pretty much game over. Any thoughts of Preuss averaging around 80 is a pure pipe dream .
Then theres the fitness debate. If / When Preuss misses, you have Comben covering. He seems to have the tall forward role at North. If he doesn’t do any chop out ruck work he could struggle to score 50.

Williams will play tall forward also with some chop out ruck work. West Coast struggled to put up big scores last year due to there slow ball movement. I think Williams will be lucky to average 60. Even this maybe ambitious .

All this risk so you can add a few more Midpricers that may not even make cash either ?

The other Ruck solution folks are talking up is the Handcuff approach
Eg Gawn and Jackson. This seems like madness to me. For one your seriously limiting your potential scores and two if theres a covid scare and the game is cancelled you lose both your Rucks in one foul swoop.

I know I keep banging on about this, but set and forget Rucks all the way .

      6

      0
      1. Exactly right, FT.

Playing as 2nd ruck and 3rd tall in a declining side, don’t see how Williams does more than 50~. He’s there as a utility player; allows Nic Nat to play an impactful 70% and preserves our 3:3 FWD structure.

        3

        0
      2. I currently have set and forget locked in.

        Just like the thought experiment.

In terms of cash it was the combined 3 of Pruess, Comben and Williams.
Think Pruess is a pretty solid chance to make 200k and the other two 150k each eventually.

Comben won’t do any ruck work at north with Goldy/CCJ and Xeri all ahead of him in that spot. However he only has to average 55-60 points to make 150k. If Kozi could do it last year for the hawks, Comben can do it for this North team (That might actually be able to score)

“If all goes well the two Pruess/Williams should be worth 800K” comment is that i don’t think its unreasonable to suggest that the two players could have a combined 160 average. It’s optimistic but not beyond possible. People think Preuss range is 80-100 if he plays and Williams just by virtue of ToG should be able to get to 60-80. Thats a worst case 140 best case 180. I split the difference at a 160 average.

Like i said i don’t think it’s worth it either given that you won’t be using that cash for a UP Mid due to rookies. But if it works it’s a good value play that could get you 160 points on field from 420k with Comben as R3

I feel like the main issue with Williams is just that he’s in the same price bracket as other players who seem to be more likely to make that 200k-400k jump like Curnow/Brodie/Constable ect and getting him is an opportunity cost to miss out on them

        1

        5
          1. Sorry Baz I disagree.

At this stage Pruess is playing for the Possibles in the match sim with both Flynn and Briggs playing for the probables. With Preuss’s injury history theres no way Leon would risk playing him as the only Ruck. This means even if he gets a game he will be forced to share.

Phillips actually surprised me with his average but he was the main Ruckman when Draper was out. I’m not sure Preuss has the tank to Ruck the majority of the game after missing so much of the Preseason.

Wright shares the ruck as a chop out, but is a much better Forward. His average was inflated by 3 games were he scored bags of goals ( 147 / 139 / 146 ) take this out and his average plummets. There’s no way Preuss is going close to scoring bags like this.

I think Flynn and Briggs start the year like they did last year . This will give Pruess time to gain some much needed fitness and confidence in the two’s. If he gets through the first 3-4 weeks he will be brought in and either Briggs or Flynn will get a rest.

Anyone thinking of starting Preuss at R2 should have a back up plan.

    1. Hey, Sawyer.

Good bones but a few issues:

      – Hewett, if you rate him, should be in your DEF line given the lack of rookies down there
      – Big O’s a less attractive prospect after word he might have a ruck split with Fort
      – Dunks is a must have up FWD

      Other than that, great stuff.

      Good luck!

      2. FT I can’t see DeKoning playing much footy. Surely the cats will cover Hendo with Blicavs down back again. They have two brilliant wingers in Smith and Menegola, so they don’t need Blicavs on the flanks. No space in that fwd line for Dr Koning unless Cameron’s body fizzles again, and they just got Ceglar in the ruck, pushing the others down the line. Where does Dr Koning play?

    2. Great team, WW. Excellent premo selections.

One thing though: for a 4x MID structure you should be able to get up to 13 keepers, not 12. Maybe merge a couple midpricers into a 4th DEF premo/13th keeper.

      1. The only way I can do it Gunboat, is downgrade Steele to Titch, merge Milera and Coleman at D4, drop Sinn for Dean, and bring Hollands and O’Driscoll onto the field. I’ll also need to bring Comben out of R3 for fwd bench cover. It gets me Short – just. But if Milera is fit and firing, and Sinn and Chesser play R1, it’s a lot of lost cash growth and bench cover for probably the same points Don’t want to go with Whitfield of Sicily because of the injury risk I’m already sporting.

Not to mention the enormity of trying to get Steele back later.

        Any alternative suggestions?

        3

        0
        1. Hmm, definitely don’t drop Steele.

Yeah, look, maybe 12 keepers and 4 midpricers is the way to go.

You’ve also paid up for a heap of expensive rookies (which is the right way to build a team), so you could have a decent bit of coin if they all don’t line up R1 or look the goods.

Yep. Sit on that team till pre-season games and R1 teamsheets, WW. It’s actually really good now that I look at it in perspective. Don’t want to sacrifice premo picks and rookies for an extra keeper you’re not that juiced about.

Just move Coleman down back like FT said, that’s the one line where it’s looking like we’ll only get a handful of rookies. Probably just O’Driscoll, De Koning, Dean and Skinner at this stage.

          Good luck.

          1. Hey WW.

I’m not too sure on De Koning either . I guess it depends if Stewart is ready. If he still needs some time I think Blicavs takes his intercepting role and they use De Koning as a lock down Tall. The fact the can chop out in the ruck increases his chances of getting a game also.

If he doesn’t get up, Skinner or even Kelly from the Pies may also do the job as both have that D/F DPP.

I have actually left Milera out of my side atm. He is my go to if Coleman fails. I always like a get out of jail card for my midpricers.

Loving the team though. lets hope theres no more injuries to key players this preseason.

            Cheers FT.

          2. Gunboat, I found a way to make your suggestion work without compromising on the premium picks – adding Hall to the backline at the expense of Constable, Milera, Coleman, & Sinn. If I cast another bench option aside I can make Hall into Lloyd too. This gets me 13 premiums, but much less cash growth and less bench cover:

Hall, Dawson, Ryan, Ridley, Chesser, O’Driscoll
            Skinner, Dean

Macrae, Steele, Oliver, Neale, JHF, Daicos, D.Stephens, Clark
            C.Stephens, MacDonald, Tsitas

            Darcy, Nic Nat, Akuei

Dunkley, Thomas, Butters, Cogs, Curnow, Hollands
            Comben, Parker

Would you go this way and cross your fingers on injury & selection, or the original safer route with bench cover and heaps of cash growth potential?

        2. If you wanted to add an extra Premo the best bet is probably upgrade Mileria and bring in a FWD premo in the 450 to 500 range.

          Places to scrape cash.
Curnow and Constable down to 123k rookies gives you close to 190k to upgrade Milera. (465k total to spend roughly)

If you wanted to get to 500k or above then i’d go down from Macrae as he is a stable high scorer vs Steele and Oliver who tend to be more up and down with Higher highs. Missing Macrae for part of the season will hurt less then if you miss Steele/Oliver and they score a 170 while you don’t have them. Plus you have the trade Boost to do a 3 for 1 trade if you really feel like you need to get him in before the byes

Macrae to Miller gets you an extra 25k (490 ish) and Macrae down to Titch/Lyons/Laird (all proven stable scoring top 8 mid types) gets you 60/70k and into the 520 range.

That opens up some interesting options like Dale as D4. or Taranto as F2

Your team would certainly become more stable but it would hurt your cash gen. it becomes

          Seems to be
          TU Macrae 3 MIdpricers vs
TD Lesser UP MID Premo 2 rookies on field.

  48. Playing around with teams like the rest of you and wondering what people think of this structure:

Lloyd, Hall, Dawson, Whitfield (4 x 124k or below rookies)

Macrae, Steele, Oliver, Crisp, Neale, Daicos, Dylan Stephens, Hobbs (3 x 124k rookies)

    Darcy, Grundy, Comben

Dunkley, Coleman, Cogs, Curnow, Rachelle (3 x 124k rookies)

    15-30k ITB , projected 1843

It’s essentially a 5-4-2-1 premo set up (Crisp is a premo def obviously and Coleman should arguably start back there as well)

I like the flexibility of this structure depending on which cheapo rookies start R1 plus I’m not convinced yet that Butters, Thomas, Degoat, etc will be top 6-8 forwards, plus historically we know defenders score better than forwards.

Thoughts on why this structure might or might not work?

    What would you tweak?

    Cheers

  49. Finally have decided on a set and forget ruck structure which allows me two rucks for two byes, and one for the third…maybe two for each bye depending on trades in hand.

Downside is not much itb, and had to sacrifice Lloyd who now becomes an upgrade target. Also no ruck cover.

Daniel Ridley Whitfield Sicily Skinner Dean (Kelly McDonagh)

Macrae Oliver Titch Neale JHF N Daicos Ward Driscoll (Macdonald Clark N Long…loop)

    Grundy Nicnat (Benning)

Martin Thomas Heeney Butters Cogs Rachele (Hollands Comden)

$11.7 itb. If Cogs and Butters hold up, reckon its 15 keepers. Got plenty of dpp flexibility, and c loop covered for first 9 rounds.

    RUCKS: Darcy, McInerney (B) Hayes

FWDS: Dunkley, Bailey, Butter, Coniglio, Baldwin, Hollands (B) De Koning, Nankervis

    CASH LEFT: $9k

    1. Matt R

Pretty decent side in my eyes. There is a few things I would consider changing though.

Perryman is interesting one. He has a pretty average scoring history and a bad injury history , with so many proven defenders I’m unsure why you would take the risk ?

McInerney was in a heap of sides early, but seems to have gone cold with confirmation he will share ruck duties with Fort.

I’m not sure you need both Constable and Berry . Where as you probably need at least one of Daicos or JHF if not both.

Lastly if you like Rachell I would get him Forward as there doesn’t seem to be too many other options there.

Best of luck and happy planning.

  52. Well, after some excited early fiddling, I’ve calmed the farm a bit and done more research, given options a fair bit of thought and have settled on the below, subject to rookies. It’s probably about version 10!

Dawson, Short, Whitfield, Sicily, Coleman, Sinn / O’Driscoll, Uwland (DPP LH)

Macrae, Steele, Oliver, Neale, Crouch, D Stephens, Chesser, Maginess / C Stephens, MacDonald, Clark

    Grundy, Marshall / Comben

Dunkley, Heeney, Rayner, Coniglio, Rachele, Hollands / Pedlar, Skinner

I know there’s some risk in this team but risk I’m happy to take. In defence, There’s Dawson, who will be a DEF playing MID, Short who averages over 100 without Houli and Whitfield & Sicily, who have obvious upside if they stay fully fit. Crouch is also coming back from injury and training well. Marshall is coming off a injury interrupted season but ‘hasn’t missed a beat’ in pre-season and Ryder is a week-to-week proposition these days. He’s value. And, there’s Heeney. I know, I know. He could become De Goey/Butters if need be.

Rookies are a mix of decent picks from last 2-3 years who should break in to teams and stay there after their bodies having 2-3 pre-seasons and a few of this year’s picks. I generally favour those who have been in the system a bit longer.

Overall it gives me 13 potential keepers, 3 mid-pricers and 6 starting rookies. It’s bye friendly and has enough DPP flexibility. Of the 13 keepers, 9 play in week 1 of the byes, 8 in week 2 and 9 in week 3. With mid-pricers included its 11/11/10.

I think I’ve settled on this but would be happy to hear any feedback or suggestions.

    Cheers

    1. Great team, Wadda, but I’d rethink the Crouch pick.

Was still bogged down by that groin last month and only resumed full training a fortnight ago – also battled it for such an long, indeterminate amount of time, major red flag.

Even if he were fit, I still wouldn’t pick him. Low CP ratio, negligible clearance work and lopsided K:HB numbers mean he’ll never really do the 120+ that’s required for a Top 8 MID. Could hit a purple patch but those issues have always run through his game.

On top of all that, the Crows midfield has changed heaps since Crouch last played in 2020: Laird’s now transitioned to a fully fledged MID and their #1 on baller, Keays is on an excellent trajectory, they’re going to continue trying to cast Schoenberg as a contest & CP bull and now Dawson’s come to the party.

Spare yourself watching him get 30 touches and NOT ton. Look elsewhere.

Otherwise, one of best pre-season teams I’ve seen going around. Very well thought out.

      Good luck.

      1. Thanks GD

I appreciate the response & Couch feedback. I think It’s going to be Cogs to Midfield & De Goey into the forward line then. Still a little bit of risk. He’s De Goey after all but I think he’s in for a good year, with more midfield time and he’s a tad under priced. I want to keep the 13 keeper/3 mid-priced structure and having De Goey will give me 9/9/8 keepers playing in bye rounds.

Thanks again & good luck to you too

          1. Thanks M, appreciate it.

It ended up being De Goey & Gibcus for Crouch & Sinn. I’m a Richmond member and following our pre-season quite closely. Gibcus is a big chance to play R1 and going really well & ‘turning heads’ in pre-season. Balta has been moved forward, which I reckon indicates Gibcus is likely to be the 3rd tall with Tarrant & Grimes and he takes marks. I couldn’t quite fit him in previously but the change of Crouch to De Goey gave me some extra dollars. I’m settled, for now.

            Good luck to you too.

  53. So I reckon this’ll be the my last draft until post-preseason games (although I said this about 6 drafts ago):
DEF: Crisp, Dawson, Ridley, Daniel, Chesser, O’Driscoll, Skinner, Kelly
MID: Macrae, Oliver, Mitchell, Neale, Brayshaw, JHF, Daicos, Stephens, MacDonald, Clark, Tsitas
    RUCK: Grundy, Nic Nat, Hayes
FWD: Martin, Thomas, Coniglio, Curnow, Hollands, De Koning, Comben, Parker

Also, a side question; what’s people’s thoughts on Isaac Cumming? I reckon he’s on a nice trajectory and could finish inside the top 6-8 defs, but just think there’s too many value/safe picks around his price, which is why I’ve talked myself out of picking him. Maybe a year early?

    3

    1. Value picks that you like can always be bought in later if their performance holds.

GWS have the round 12 bye and Leon Cameron. It’s probably better to wait until things shuffle out and bring him in later as a POD if you like him.

Its just so hard to know who will be top 6/8 due to potential DPP changes. With players like Pendles moving to Halfback. would say that its safer to lock in 3-4 players who you are almost certain will get to 110 or higher (lloyd, Hall and all the usual names) Then take a risk gives you postve value but leaves you short of the top 6/8 after DPP happens

  54. Been debating this with a mate: what do you lads think:

Tu) Caldwell / Curnow (or Rayner) & T Thomas

    Td) Titch / Rachelle & 123k rookie

    10

    3
    1. Is Caldwell M4 or M5? How about Titch?
How many playable non premium rookies do you have?

I think i like it as a structural change if you believe that FWD rookies will score enough points to move Neale to M5 and be on par with the Mid rookies. Then i think its worth it

If it’s Caldwell at M5 I’d just trust one of the Premium rookies there and put that extra 100k to work elsewhere … Unless you specifically want him as a rookie correction type to bring in a Berry and/or Rowell

  55. I’m thinking at this current time that a 4 premo backline sounds better, I don’t know how many defenders rookies will start Rd.1

I’ll have to do a 4 premo midfield to achieve that, but I’m thinking M5 should be someone who’s on the breakout potential, I feel someone like Rowell or even Constable is too much of a risk for me.

At the moment, my M1-4 is Macrae, Titch, Petracca, Neale.
Which of these sound better for the M5 spot?

    TU: Thomas
    TD: Cripps

From what I’ve heard, Cripps will be returning pretty much full time to the midfield. Especially when Walsh won’t be there, they’ll need someone experienced to lead the midfield. So he should be getting back up to a 95-100 average at the very least.
Thomas though I’m liking more and more, definitely breakout material with how great his form has been so far this pre-season. No Cunnington will help too.
