Reserves Rookie Review – Round 14 2022

The last week of the byes is now done with some teams having some decent line ups in the reserves for the pointy end of the season. We do have rookies putting their hands up to come into their AFL sides which is nice as we still need bench cover and downgrade targets.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
West Adelaide 9.12.66 def. by Adelaide 15.12.102

Lachlan Gollant $183.8k FWD – 8 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 3.1 and took 4 marks – 57 (56/4)
Luke Pedlar $123.9k MID/FWD – 13 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 2.2 and took 5 marks – 63 (71/7)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF – 20 disposals (18 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 marks, 5 inside 50s and had 4 rebound 50s – 84 (70/10)

Verdict: Gollant kicked 3 goals in a good game with Pedlar kicking 2.2 and Worrell also played well with 20 touches, a goal and 7 marks.

PORT ADELAIDE
Port Adelaide 11.10.76 def. by Norwood 15.4.94

Sam Hayes $308.2k RUC – 11 disposals (7 kicks), 6 marks and had 37 hitouts – 94 (75/5)
Sam Mayes $201.4k FWD – 33 disposals (12 kicks), 5 tackles, 11 clearances and had 6 inside 50s – 98 (102/5)

Verdict: Hayes was great in the ruck with 37 hitouts and could come into the AFL side this week. Mayes was among the best with 33 touches and a game high 11 clearances with Burgoyne playing well with 17 touches and 5 marks. Skinner played his best game (stat and score wise) in a while with 15 touches and 6 marks including 4 contested.

Verdict: Carroll and Hayes had great games with 29 touches and 8 marks each. Motlop was very quiet with only 5 touches and no goals.

Verdict: Baldwin kicked 3.2 from his 15 touches in a great game while Bryan was decent but not up to his usual standards.

Verdict: Stein and Hamilton were solid down back but wouldn’t have forced their way in with 15 touches each. Brown played his best game of the year with 22 touches while Derksen kicked 3 goals and took 8 marks in his 2nd game for the Giants.

GEELONG

Nick Stevens $123.9k MID – 15 disposals (9 kicks) and took 5 marks – 55 (73/6)
Mitchell Knevitt $117.3k MID – 14 disposals (5 kicks), 7 tackles and had 4 clearances – 65 (70/7)

Verdict: Stevens had a quiet day by his standard after missing a couple of games while Knevitt laid 7 tackles although he only had 14 touches. The Cats seem to have their list in decent shape for the run home.

Verdict: Thompson returned from injury nicely with 16 touches and 8 marks while Hollands continues in the same manner with 21 touches and a goal. Moyle dominated in the ruck against some inexperienced ruckmen. Oea had a great game with 23 touches, a goal and 9 marks in his best game for the year with Tsitas finding enough of the ball but using it mainly by hand keeping his score down.

Verdict: Windhager dominated after being dropped with 32 touches, 2 goals and a game high 12 clearances to push his case for a recall. Joyce played well also with 24 touches and 10 marks and even snuck forward to kick a goal.

Verdict: Some good games coming from their big win here with Ronke having 20 touches, 3 goals and 12 marks. Stephens and Taylor had similar games having around 25 touches and taking over 5 marks each. Roberts had 28 touches to go with his 7 marks in a great game and the new man Hall-Kahan kicked 5 goals from 23 touches.

FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)

Verdict: Great games by all here even in a loss. Darcy took a huge 14 marks while Bedendo took 10 to go with his 24 touches. Raak had 19 touches of his own as well as taking 9 marks down back.

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)

Neil Erasmus $207.4k MID – 25 disposals (18 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks, 13 tackles, 5 inside 50s – 4 rebound 50s and had 5 frees for – 138 (98/5)

Verdict: Erasmus was among the best with 25 touches and a game high 13 tackles. He filled all the stat lines to push his case for a recall.

WEST COAST
West Coast 8.14.62 def. by Claremont 14.6.90

Patrick Naish $213.4k FWD/MID – 15 disposals (11 kicks), 3 marks and laid 4 tackles – 62 (77/3)
Isiah Winder $185.9k MID/FWD – 19 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 6 marks – 75 (57/4)
Jack Williams $117.3k RUC/FWD – 17 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.2, 4 marks and had 21 hitouts – 83 (52/8)
Jai Culley $102.4k MID/FWD – 20 disposals (11 kicks), 6 marks, 5 tackles and had 6 inside 50s – 92 (64/2)

Verdict: Winder played well with 19 touches and a goal as did Williams with the bulk of the ruck duty with 21 hitouts and a goal. Culley had a great 2nd game with 20 touches with 6 marks and 5 tackles.

  1. Great work Alza. Top info every week.
    I’m at the stage now where I hope GC don’t play Holland’s so they don’t wreck his price for next year! Keeps ripping it up in the Magoo’s.

    Hopefully Rory Thompson gets back into the side, he is sitting on my bench
