Reserves Rookie Review – Round 17

Here we are for round 17 with only 6 weeks to go. A lot of players seem to be performing well at reserve level and really pushing their cases to come into AFL level to close out the season. Keep an eye out for potential debutants as teams get a look at who will retain a spot on the list for next season.

Verdict: Mcasey had his best game of the year but he seems to have dropped in the pecking order. Strachan did his thing and was among the best as was O’Connor with 20 touches and 7 tackles. Newchurch made use of his limited touches kicking 3 goals. There was a fair few experienced players in the SANFL this week that performed well

Verdict: Hayes had a bit of quiet one by his standards, Williams bounced back with a couple of goals with Mead and McEntee having decent games but nothing to force their way in

Verdict: Prior played his first game in the VFL and could come straight back into the AFL side after being amongst the best. Fullarton was decent and could come in for the injured Hipwood, Ballenden suffered a slight hamstring injury which comes at a poor time for him as he would’ve been a great replacement for Adams. Cockatoo returned from injury with a great all round game with Joyce having a great game also with 27 touches

Verdict: Bit the same as last week with all of these players performing well. Keane was solid down back with Wilson and Rantall getting a decent amount of the footy. Lynch, Macrae and Ginnivan were among the best with great games. Expect Ginnivan to make his debut very soon with Macrae a good chance to return in the near future

Verdict: Flynn and Briggs were good in tandem but they both hampered each other’s scoring. Sproule kicked 5 in a great game, Bruhn and Shipley who was returning from concussion were both great in the middle with well-rounded games. Wehr and Peatling were good down back getting plenty of the ball although Peatling injured his ribs in this one

Verdict: Guthrie and Brownless were good in this game with Brownless having an excellent month. Jarvis kicked 3 goals in a solid effort although De Koning had a quiet game and doesn’t appear on their injury list

Verdict: Farrar and Davies were among the best with good all round games. Hollands was decent as he makes a slow return from a long injury lay off as was Jeffrey kicking 3 goals. Moyle was very good in his 2nd game for Gold Coast and could be given a chance this year so they can have a look at how the 19 year old goes in the big time

Rioli had his best game of the year with 10 tackles

Verdict: McDonald was excellent leading the way in goals and marks in his best game of the season. Carruthers was also very good with 22 touches but I don’t think he gets a run this season with the depth Sydney have currently

Verdict: Edwards and Winder were very quiet in this one. Foley was very good with 22 touches down back. West came back with an excellent game leading the way for possessions. Hutchings continues to rack it up in the WAFL and if he isn’t selected this week then he probably won’t be without significant injuries as the Eagles seem to be looking towards youth
