Reserves Rookie Review – Round 17 2022

Written by Alza on July 13 2022

Most sides have started to trim their injury lists as the pointy end of the season starts to get closer meaning less chances for the fringe rookies to retain their spots. That being said there is still plenty of opportunity for players to get their chance and make the most of it.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Sturt 13.4.82 def. Adelaide 11.5.71

Brett Turner $102.4k MID – 15 disposals (9 kicks), 5 marks, 8 tackles and had 6 clearances – 87 (97/6)

Verdict: Good game from Turner with 15 touches as well as laying 8 tackles and having 6 clearances.

PORT ADELAIDE
Woodville West-Torrens 13.11.89 def. Port Adelaide 4.5.29

Sam Hayes $308.2k RUC – 7 disposals (6 kicks), 4 marks, 3 tackles and had 9 hitouts – 48 (67/7)

Verdict: Hayes had a quiet game as he shared ruck duties with Lycett. I suggest to trade him out as he won’t play again this season. If Hinkley stays at Port then he may look for opportunities elsewhere.

VFL

BRISBANE
Bye

CARLTON
Port Melbourne 14.9.93 def. Carlton 14.6.90

Jack Carroll $171k MID – 17 disposals (9 kicks) and had 6 inside 50s – 40 (74/6)

Verdict: Carroll had 17 touches but failed to take a mark or lay a tackle, can’t see him featuring much once the huge amount of injured players return in the coming weeks.

COLLINGWOOD
Collingwood 9.12.66 def. North Melbourne 7.6.48

Finlay Macrae $206.8k MID – 34 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 1.2, 9 tackles, 10 clearances and had 5 inside 50s – 133 (90/12)

Verdict: Macrae was among the best with both game high 9 tackles and 10 clearances to go with a goal and 34 touches. If he can get more of a midfield role with a cheaper price next year he may be an option.

ESSENDON
Bye

GWS GIANTS
Williamstown 9.10.64 def. by GWS 11.16.82

Jake Stein $202k DEF – 16 disposals (15 kicks), 5 marks and had 11 rebound 50s – 64 (83/6)
Cooper Hamilton $156.8k MID/FWD – 13 disposals (7 kicks) and took 4 marks – 53 (68/10)

Verdict: Stein had a decent game with 16 touches and 11 rebounds while Hamilton was quiet with 13 touches.

Verdict: Stephens and Dempsey had quiet days with under 15 touches each while Evans was among the best with 5 goals from his 22 touches.

GOLD COAST
Gold Coast 12.8.80 def. Frankston 10.16.76

Elijah Hollands $123.9k MID/FWD – 21 disposals (14 kicks), 4 marks, 4 tackles, 3 clearances and had 6 rebound 50s – 82 (86/13)
Jez McLennan $123.9k DEF – 21 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 9 marks and laid 3 tackles – 94 (76/13)
Ned Moyle $123.9k RUC – 15 disposals (11 kicks), 7 marks, 46 hitouts, 3 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 103 (95/13)
James Tsitas $102.4k MID – 22 disposals (11 kicks), 3 marks, 10 tackles and had 7 clearances – 103 (93/9)

Verdict: Hollands and Moyle had a standard game for them and at this point it is better for Supercoach that they are saved for next year. McLennan played well with 21 touches and 9 marks while Tsitas returned to the VFL nicely with 22 touches, 7 clearances and a game high 10 tackles.

BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Box Hill 8.11.59 def. by Southport 10.14.74

No real relevant players to mention.

CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Geelong 9.10.64 def. by Casey 11.9.75

Bailey Laurie $123.9k FWD/MID – 30 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 3.1, 4 marks, 3 tackles and had 3 clearances – 120 (76/13)
Kade Chandler $102.4k FWD – 20 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.1 and took 5 marks – 69 (87/11)

Verdict: Melbourne’s forward line is struggling and the players here all played well kicking goals so could be a chance to come in. van Rooyen kicked 2 goals from 11 touches with a decent all-around game. Laurie had 30 touches to go with 3 goals and Chandler had 20 touches and kicked the 1 goal.

NORTH MELBOURNE
Collingwood 9.12.66 def. North Melbourne 7.6.48

Jason Horne-Francis $292.8k MID – 31 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 marks and had 7 clearances – 109 (109/1)

Verdict: Horne-Francis played his first game in the VFL and led the way for touches for North with 31 as well as having an equal team high 7 clearances. Will be back in this week and with a new coach expect a few other rookies to get some game time to see what they can do.

Bye

SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)

Luke Cleary $117.3k DEF – 16 disposals (12 kicks) and had 5 rebound 50s – 61 (65/10)

Verdict: Darcy had a good game with 17 touches, a goal and 8 hitouts, he could get a game before the years end. Khamis played well without kicking a goal with 7 marks and 16 touches. Butler and Cleary had decent games but nothing to push their case for selection.

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
West Perth 7.5.47 def. Peel 6.8.44

  1. Thanks again for the article Alza 🙂

Will be interesting to see if guys like Sam Darcy and Elijah Hollands get a game before the end of the year.

Otherwise they could be good starting options next year.

Keen to see how Carmichael backs up this week for Collingwood – as he looked very good on the weekend.

Won some good contested footy & got a bit of it – and showed courage backing into packs.

Hopefully he has another good game this weekend – to be on the bubble in round 19

    1. Hopefully guys like that don’t play to ruin their price as they will be locks for our pre season teams.

Carmichael showed enough I think and should get a decent run even when De Goey comes back. He should stay in if they have the room as Grundy will be back around the same time (2 weeks).

    1. Braydon Preuss had 30 hitouts but only six touches against Williamstown .
(The week before he had 43 hitouts with 16 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles and 5 clearances against Boxhill Hawks)

The other ruck, Kieren Briggs had 15 disposals and six marks with 18 hitouts.

Apologies Alza for hijacking your post.

      1. All good CT.

Didn’t include Preuss as he isn’t really a rookie anymore and doesn’t seem to be that in favour with the new coach especially as sole ruck
