Reserves Rookie Review – Round 7 2022

Written by Alza on May 4 2022

Plenty of players here with a lot of rookies playing well in the reserves leagues this week to hopefully give us some decent downgrade options that we so desperately need. If you have any extra insight please let us know in the comments.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
South Adelaide 11.5.71 def. by Adelaide 12.10.82

Mitchell Hinge $266.7k DEF – 20 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks, 5 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 91 (74/2)
Tariek Newchurch $123.9k FWD – 16 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 2.2, 4 marks and laid 4 tackles – 83 (59/5)
Patrick Parnell $123.9k DEF – 16 disposals (12 kicks), 6 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 62 (67/5)
Luke Pedlar $123.9k MID/FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 46 (69/4)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF – 27 disposals (18 kicks), 4 marks and had 8 rebound 50s – 81 (71/5)
Jake Soligo $117.3k MID – 20 disposals (12 kicks), 4 marks and laid 3 tackles – 76 (63/4)

Verdict: Hinge was good with 20 touches and plenty of work around the ground. Newchurch had his best game kicking 2.2 and having 16 touches. Worrell was among the best with a team high 27 touches as well as 4 marks and Soligo played well with 20 touches. Worrell would be a good inclusion for us although he didn’t score well when selected last season but this year he has been in great form and scoring well.

PORT ADELAIDE
Glenelg 9.12.66 def. by Port Adelaide 10.9.69

Jackson Mead $203.3k MID – 19 disposals (15 kicks), 4 marks, 4 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 83 (85/2)

Jake Pasini $123.9k DEF – 15 disposals (13 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 56 (73/5)
Taj Schofield $123.9k FWD/MID – 24 disposals (17 kicks), kicked 2.0 and took 4 marks – 92 (63/5)
Sam Skinner $123.9k DEF/FWD – 12 disposals (5 kicks) – 39 (45/4)
Jase Burgoyne $117.3k DEF/MID – 15 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0 and laid 4 tackles – 68 (73/5)

Verdict: Great games through the middle from Mead, Mayes and McEntee with Mayes likely BOG with team high touches and a game high 10 clearances. All 3 could be a chance to come in over the coming weeks. Schofield played his best game with 24 touches and 2 goals.

VFL

BRISBANE
Sydney 8.7.55 def. by Brisbane 17.12.114

Harry Sharp $193.2k MID – 13 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 1.1, 5 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 62 (65/3)
Thomas Berry $171.5k FWD – 26 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 2.1, 4 marks, 8 clearances and had 5 inside 50s – 89 (97/4)

Ely Smith $123.9k FWD/MID – 19 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 4 marks – 62 (65/5)

Verdict: Berry had another great game with 26 touches and 2 goals to go with 8 clearances. Wilmot was solid down back with 19 touches. Plenty of experienced players in the VFL for Brisbane and their AFL side in good form so tough to come in.

CARLTON
Carlton 17.12.114 def. North Melbourne 9.5.59

Jordan Boyd $138.8k DEF – 21 disposals (17 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks, 5 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 97 (78/3)
Alex Mirkov $123.9k RUC – 10 disposals (4 kicks), 3 marks and had 35 hitouts – 72 (67/6)
Jesse Motlop $117.3k FWD – 18 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 3 clearances and had 5 inside 50s – 73 (71/4)

Verdict: Boyd came back to the VFL and had a great game with 21 touches and a goal and it seems he played some time in the middle. Mirkov won his ruck battle convincingly with 35 hitouts and Motlop played a well rounded game.

COLLINGWOOD
Coburg 2.10.22 def. by Collingwood 18.18.126

Finlay Macrae $206.8k MID – 21 disposals (8 kicks), 3 marks and laid 5 tackles – 80 (84/6)
Will Kelly $123.9k DEF/FWD – 9 disposals (6 kicks) and took 3 marks – 30 (42/6)
Cooper Murley $117.3k MID/FWD – 17 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 2.0, 7 marks and laid 3 tackles – 92 (61/6)

Verdict: Macrae played well again here with 21 touches, won’t be far away from AFL action. Kelly continues to average around 10 touches a game and will probably not be appearing in these reviews until his scoring picks up. Murley had his best game kicking 2 goals from 17 touches.

ESSENDON
Footscray 13.12.90 def. Essendon 11.11.77

Nick Bryan $166.6k RUC – 14 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 30 hitouts and had 5 inside 50s – 92 (81/6)
Tom Hird $123.9k FWD/MID – 18 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks, 3 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 68 (73/6)
Garrett McDonagh $117.3k DEF – 22 disposals (18 kicks) kicked 1.0, 7 marks, 3 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 104 (67/6)

Verdict: Bryan continues his great form and if he can show he can play a role up forward will be in line to play this year. Hird backed up last week with a decent game with 18 touches and a goal and McDonagh was great again with 22 touches and 7 marks with a goal. Not sure on his role but it seems it was in a high pressing defence or he split his time in the middle and down back.

GWS GIANTS
Northern Bullants 5.8.38 def. by GWS 23.10.148

Conor Stone $181.4k FWD/MID – 19 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks and had 3 clearances – 68 (68/1)
Jacob Wehr $123.9k DEF – 28 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 1.1 and took 6 marks – 107 (86/5)
Josh Fahey $117.3k DEF – 27 disposals (18 kicks), 5 marks, 6 inside 50s and had 5 rebound 50s – 90 (98/4)

Verdict: Stone returned from injury and played well with 19 touches with Wehr and Fahey finding plenty of it with 28 and 27 touches respectively and both taking at least 5 marks each. Would be great if we could get 1 of these 2 long term as they would score well in the big time.

Geelong 10.6.66 def. Williamstown 6.18.54

Francis Evans $123.9k FWD – 17 disposals (10 kicks), 6 marks, 4 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 77 (75/4)

Mitchell Knevitt $117.3k MID – 20 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 1.0, 6 marks and laid 4 tackles – 94 (87/4)

Verdict: Neale had his best game of the year kicking 2 goals with 7 marks while Stephens had a team high touches and clearances to keep pushing his case to make a debut. Knevitt is also pushing his case with another great game of 20 touches and a goal.

GOLD COAST
Gold Coast 14.7.91 def. Werribee 12.17.89

Mac Andrew $189.3k RUC – 20 disposals (16 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 6 rebound 50s – 73 (64/5)

Ned Moyle $123.9k RUC – 17 disposals (7 kicks), 3 tackles, 54 hitouts and had 7 clearances – 107 (84/5)
Rhys Nicholls $123.9k DEF – 25 disposals (13 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 84 (43/4)
James Tsitas $102.4k MID – 19 disposals (8 kicks), 3 marks and laid 7 tackles – 83 (95/3)

Verdict: Andrew continues to play well down back with McLennan and Nicholls also having great games in defence. Hollands and Tsitas did what they do best in finding plenty of it and laying 7 tackles each. Moyle dominated the ruck with 54 hitouts, plays a sole ruck role similar to Witts so will only get a game through rest or injury.

BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)

Verdict: Chandler backed up as the sub for the AFL side with a great game with 3 goals and 16 touches while Laurie played well and led the way in touches for the Demons with 24.

NORTH MELBOURNE
Carlton 17.12.114 def. North Melbourne 9.5.59

Verdict: West had a great game in the middle with 26 touches and 5 clearances. Khamis is in a great patch of form since his role change kicking 4 goals with Cleary and Raak playing well down back with plenty of touches and marks. Tough defence to come into but the Dogs aren’t in the best form yet either.

Jack Williams $117.3k RUC/FWD – 10 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 2.1, 5 marks and had 10 hitouts – 70 (62/3)

  1. Great review as always, Alza.

We really need some defence rookies ASAP.
Some talk that Josh Worrell may get a game..but hasn’t that been said before?

Jye Amiss will play this round as announced this morning. JS maybe not very solid but he has the opportunity.

    Love your work.

    1. Thanks CT.
He has been in good from so deserves a call up, bit more experienced now so should go better then last year. 50-60s hopefully to make some money

    2. I was really high on Garrett McDonagh before the season… not getting it done enough in the reserves by the look.

I know an crows supporter that is calling for Josh Worrel to get an extended run. His stats looks good anyway.

    3. That Essendon Tall Defender will be on the bubble next week.

Not ideal for lots of reasons (Role, Bye, job security)

  2. Thanks Alza.

    Fantastic resource as always.

You would think Hinge gets another run this week with Smith concussed. He may need to play well to keep his spot though.

Stephens surely can’t be far away either. The Swans had a few injuries down back and may shuffle McInerney back to make room for him on a wing.

    Thanks again Alza.

  3. Bangin’ as always, Alza.

Think Hamilton, who despite being a MID/FWD in SC debuted off HB, will likely keep Fahey and Wehr out of the side. They can probably only one run rookie down there at a time.
