Welcome back to the Reserves Rookie Review. 6 teams had a bye in the VFL this week along with 1 game postponed due to COVID. As the injuries pile up we need some rookies to come through the ranks, check out who is waiting in the wings below. Let me know if there’s anyone I have left out that you think should be included or if there is anything you’d like me to change.
SANFL
ADELAIDE
Port Adelaide 13.9.87 def. Adelaide 10.13.73
Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 18 disposals (14 kicks), 4 marks, 7 clearances, 23 hitouts and 4 rebound 50s – 94 (98/6)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 13 disposals (10 kicks), 3 tackles and 4 rebound 50s – 49 (65/6)
Ronin O’Connor $123.9k MID – 24 disposals (10 kicks), 3 marks, 6 tackles, 7 clearances and 5 inside 50s – 91 (70/6)
Tariek Newchurch $102.4K MID/FWD – 14 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.0 and had 5 inside 50s – 45 (58/6)
Nicholas Murray $102.4k DEF – 9 disposals (7 kicks), 4 tackles and 5 rebound 50s – 43 (51/3)
James Borlase $102.4k DEF – 14 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 2.1, 3 marks (2 contested) and laid 6 tackles – 82 (58/6)
Verdict: Quite days for Worrell and Murray but Strachan keeps getting it done in the reserves. If he could go forward with a couple of goals he could come in as the 3rd tall but not as a back up to O’Brien. Borlase and O’Connor played well but Hately should be next in line as he was the Crows best
PORT ADELAIDE
Port Adelaide 13.9.87 def. Adelaide 10.13.73
Joel Garner $189.9k DEF – 21 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 2.0, 6 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 93 (59/5)
Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 15 disposals (9 kicks), 4 clearances, 40 hitouts and 4 inside 50s – 77 (77/5)
Taj Schofield $102.4k MID – 17 disposals (9 kicks), 4 tackles and 3 clearances – 68 (69/5)
Verdict: Garner had his best game for the year with a couple of goals while Schofield continues his decent year but the Power have a large amount of mid talent in their AFL and SANFL sides. Hayes has been touted to come in for Lycett and has been used in majority of the ruck work in the reserves averaging 31 hitouts a game

BRISBANE

CARLTON
Footscray 11.11.77 def. Carlton 8.11.59
Paddy Dow $192.2k FWD/MID – 22 disposals (12 kicks) with 6 inside 50s – 56 (67/2)
Lochie O’Brien $180.5k MID – 13 disposals (9 kicks) – 43 (72/4)
Josh Honey $123.9k MID/FWD – 11 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 2.1, 4 marks and 4 inside 50s – 58 (75/4)
Corey Durdin $117.3k MID/FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks), 6 marks, 7 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 79 (55/4)
Verdict: Decent games here with no standout as Dow failed to take a mark or lay a tackle on his return to VFL
COLLINGWOOD
Collingwood 14.11.95 def. Coburg 13.13.91
Trey Ruscoe $179.6k FWD – 12 disposals (8 kicks) and took 3 marks – 38 (41/3)
Will Kelly $135.4k FWD – 14 disposals (11 kicks), 8 marks and 6 rebound 50s – 60 (51/3)
Finlay Macrae $137.6k MID/FWD – 29 disposals (7 kicks), 5 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 88 (88/1)
Trent Bianco $123.9k DEF/MID – 29 disposals (19 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 marks, 7 tackles and 6 inside 50s – 126 (126/1)
Jay Rantall $123.9k MID – 26 disposals (13 kicks) and took 4 marks – 83 (95/2)
Tom Wilson $123.9k FWD – 24 disposals (13 kicks), 7 marks, 3 tackles and 6 rebound 50s – 94 (80/4)
Reef McInnes $117.3k MID – 3 disposals (1 kick) – 10 (59/4)
Jack Ginnivan $102.4k MID/FWD – 13 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 3.1, 3 marks and 6 tackles – 86 (59/4)
Verdict: Macrae and Rantall were great in their narrow win as they try to earn a recall while Wilson continues his good start to the season. Bianco in his first game of the year was best on ground but for me he would need another game in the VFL before coming in. McInnes suffered a syndesmosis injury early on in the 2nd quarter and is out for 8 weeks
ESSENDON

GWS GIANTS

GEELONG
Geelong 17.15.117 def. Northern Bullants 11.6.72
Ben Jarvis $139.2k DEF/FWD – 17 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.3, 8 marks and laid 3 tackles – 90 (70/3)
Sam De Koning $123.9k DEF – 17 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 2.1, 4 marks, 3 tackles and 4 hitouts – 84 (84/1)
Cameron Taheny $123.9k FWD – 19 disposals (15 kicks), 10 marks and 5 rebound 50s – 91 (60/3)
Nick Stevens $117.3k DEF – 23 disposals (13 kicks) and 6 marks – 75 (66/2)
Verdict: Good games here by all but even with the injuries the Cats have I don’t think they come in without stringing together some strong performances. De Koning the most likely but with Ratugolea returning and Jenkins kicking 7.5 it hampers his chances in the short term
GOLD COAST
Bye
BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Box Hill 8.5.53 def. by Werribee 13.12.90
Finn Maginness $195.6k MID – 21 disposals (10 kicks), 6 marks and 5 tackles – 87 (67/2)
Conor Nash $193.4k FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks) and took 4 marks – 48 (71/3)
Tyler Brockman $172.7k MID/FWD – 10 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 6 tackles – 56 (51/3)
Connor Downie $117.3k MID – 11 disposals (5 kicks), 3 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 42 (45/3)
Jack Saunders $102.4k MID/FWD – 6 disposals (4 kicks) and gave away 6 frees (1 for) – 5 (27/2)
Verdict: Downie failed to push his case to come in while Brockman was solid with a great goal from the boundary. Maginness was among the best with 21 touches as he looks to get back into the AFL line up
CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Casey v Sydney
Postponed due to COVID
NORTH MELBOURNE
Southport 24.9.153 def. North Melbourne 7.4.46
Verdict: Only rookie to play VFL was E. Ford $117.3k FWD this week who only amassed the 10 touches
RICHMOND
Bye
SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)
Bye
SYDNEY
Casey v Sydney
Postponed due to COVID
FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
Footscray 11.11.77 def. Carlton 8.11.59
Jamarra Ugle-Hagan $207.3k FWD – 2 disposals (2 kicks) and kicked 1.0 – 22 (53/4)
Lewis Young $198.3k DEF – 31 disposals (22 kicks), 17 marks, 3 tackles and 7 rebound 50s – 144 (98/3)
Ben Cavarra $194.9k FWD – 21 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 2.0, 5 marks and 6 inside 50s – 88 (82/3)
Louis Butler $191.8k DEF – 19 disposals (15 kicks) 6 marks and 5 inside 50s – 72 (82/4)
Cody Weightman $173.7k FWD – 9 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 2.2 and laid 6 tackles – 70 (76/4)
Riley Garcia $123.9k MID – 21 disposals (10 kicks), 3 marks, 6 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 83 (85/4)
Verdict: Good games from everyone here as Footscray continue their undefeated season although I’m not sure how relevant (price) they will be if and when they do come up to the AFL side. Ugle-Hagan suffered a concussion on the weekend which comes at a poor time for the No. 1 pick. Young was best on ground reeling in 17 marks in the back line as he pushes for a recall
WAFL
PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
Perth 11.11.77 def. by Peel 14.8.92
Luke Valente $123.9k MID – 23 disposals (11 kicks), 4 marks and 3 tackles – 82 (81/3)
Josh Treacy $108k RUC/FWD – 12 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.1, 5 marks, 3 tackles and 14 hitouts – 76 (104/2)
Verdict: Not too may relevant rookies here as some flew to Brisbane last week. Valente has strung a few decent games together in his push for a long awaited debut while Treacy did a bit of everything but appears a bit down in the pecking order after not making the 30 man squad that travelled east
WEST COAST
East Fremantle 22.15.147 def. West Coast 3.4.22
Callum Jamieson $123.9k RUC – 11 disposals (4 kicks), 3 marks, 7 tackles and 20 hitouts – 84 (59/5)
Ben Johnson $123.9k DEF – 29 disposals (23 kicks) with 10 rebound 50s – 86 (66/4)
Zane Trew $102.4k MID – 17 disposals (6 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 56 (72/4)
Verdict: The Eagles are now 0-5 in the WAFL after this flogging. Johnson was among the best for them with his 29 touches as Jamieson took over the ruck duties but doesn’t appear to be in line to come up with the ruck stocks ahead of him

Tremendous stuff again, Alza. Cheers.
Yep, Hayes will come in as Lycett’s replacement for the next month.
Thinking I’ll let Flynn (BE 3), who likely comes in to give Mumford a rest this week, get another price rise in then drop him down to Hayes.
Thanks GD, that sounds like a good plan. Would be even better if Port get a few Sunday games after the bye although I doubt it
I’m hoping too that Flynn gets that one more good game in (or even 2) and then will be flicked to ROMO, with Fullerton swinging to ruck bench.
