Rookie Review – Rd 6, 2020

Written by Chillo on July 14 2020

It’s a double downgrade delight this week in the Tradesphere, with rookies popping out of the woodwork here, there, everywhere! As a number of starting cows start to reach their end of their respective runs, there’s plenty of potential replacements to choose from and the biggest difficulty we have this week is deciding who not to bring into our teams. Good luck coaches!

Andrew MCPHERSONADE$123 90076 (76)-27
Will HAMILLADE$171 900 (+$26K)71 (46)-21
Louis BUTLER (MID)WBD$141 900 (+$25)53 (51)-19
Lachlan ASH (MID)GWS$211 500 (+$18K)73 (48)-5

Stephen HILL (FWD)FRE$251 000 (+$37K)80 (69)12
Jarrod BRANDER (FWD)WCE$235 200 (n/a)DNP (60)13
Derek EGGMOLESSE-SMITHRIC$202 00065 (65)16
Trent RIVERS (MID)MEL$166 000 (n/a)DNP (47)18
Tom WILLIAMSONCAR$239 400 (+$24K)47 (58)36
Fischer MCASEYADE$212 100 (+$7K)47 (41)41
Hayden YOUNGFRE$273 700 (+$11K)1 (52)91
Brandon STARCEVICH (MID)BRL$277 700 (-$18K)31 (58)93

CHEERS: Ash has found his feet in AFL footy after a nervous couple of games. The Giants lost but he was far from disgraced and managed his maiden goal – albeit a consolation effort – against the Power. Hill continues to build nicely back into form and looks to have fully justified his elevated price tag, while Hamill was again a spark out of the back half for the Crows and seems to be a very good low-key pickup.

JEERS: Unfortunately Young joined the long, long list of Supercoach-relevant injuries early in the first quarter against the Saints, rolling an ankle quite severely and being ruled out for the rest of the day with a single point to his name. Starcevich has officially hit the wall and is bleeding cash after a bright start. He will be on the chopping block for many of his 85,000 owners this week.

TRADE TARGETS: Pick 13 Hawk Day had plenty to do in Hawthorn’s defence and gave a good account of himself, going at 81% efficiency and completing six intercepts. He’s a little more expensive and has questionable job security, but if he gets a decent run at it he should make a good swap for a maxed out Starcevich. McPherson is the other viable downgrade option in the backline this week, and may just be the more solid choice here after seamlessly fitting into the often besieged Crows defence.

Noah ANDERSONGCS$307 700 (+$17K)55 (63)51
Tyler BROWNCOL$232 200 (n/a)DNP (52)62

CHEERS: Serong could win the Rising Star this year – if he is ever allowed on to the field for more than five minutes at a time. 71 points from just 54% TOG is an outstanding effort of efficiency and impact. Due to the Tigers incredible injury toll, Pickett returned and played one good quarter as has become his habit, but that was enough to post a respectable score. And the comeback kid Bennell kicked a goal after the final siren, sparking memorable celebrations in the Demons playing group.

JEERS: None of the rookie mids were all that bad but if I’m being really harsh, there’s a boo or two for Leon Cameron for only giving Green 67% game time. Let the kid play, at least until Timmy Taranto returns!

TRADE TARGETS: Ahhh, Simpson eh? Sam came in from the cold and took full advantage of the injury-enforced absences of a couple of the Cats’ mids, his 27 possessions (13 contested) being delivered with impressive composure. The flag here is that this sort of scoring is completely out of character with his Supercoach history but does that even matter? Big dollars coming his way! Hibberd was much improved in his second game with 19 possessions and five tackles. With injuries and suspension hovering around the Hangar he still looks to be a decent option at this price.

RUCKS
PlayerClubPriceScore (avg)BE
Tristan XERRI (FWD)NTH$144 800 (n/a)DNP (48)-11
Tom CAMPBELL (FWD)NTH$199 60036 (36)44

One Roos rookie ruck was replaced by another, with the more experienced Campbell checking in for the greener Xerri. But being stationed at full forward is a tough gig in this Shinboners outfit at present, and Tom only managed 5 touches in a goalless performance.

Curtis TAYLORNTH$276 000 (+$7K)15 (62)46
Connor BUDARICK (MID)GCS$229 300 (-$4K)52 (52)54

CHEERS: Nobody owns Hannan but he nearly tonned up from 8 possessions against the Suns, so he must go alright. Vandermeer really is the one that got away. He looks great in the small forward role for the Dogs and still has a negative break-even after four games.

JEERS: King should’ve tonned up against the patchwork Freo defence. Instead he gave an outstanding display of dropping marks and missing set shots. WTF Max, you made me look silly on Twitter again! Just a week after Taylor tonned up, he had an absolute mare against the Bombers and barely saw the pill before finding himself on the wrong end of a Shiel bump. His break-even is still manageable so hopefully he’s given the green light to take his place in the Roos forward line this week.

TRADE TARGETS: RANKINE!!!! I’m getting older so it takes a fair bit to get me out of my seat when I’m watching the footy these days, but Izak’s three goals on debut managed to do just that. Absolute livewire and while he won’t score like that every week, it’s worth having him in your team just to add to the pure joy of watching him do his thing. If you’ve gone completely spare and want to pick someone else for for some god unknown reason, then Bosenvulagi was very assured in difficult conditions on his debut and might go okay on your forward bench.

  1. Thanks Chillo. The crop is growing again but we are running out of time. Will probably wait until Thursday as usual but I am warming up to Hamill (Crows fans what do you think?). Starcevich has to go and I cannot dpp, so I need Simpson and a defender. Day is my favourite however his JS is a worry when we know Scrimshaw and Burgoyne are lurking and Clarko is unpredictable.

    1. I’m in the same boat Jeannot, and I’m getting McPherson. He won’t be a big scorer, but the Crows rate him. He’s just had a bad run with injuries but looks fit now.
There’s no guarantees of course, but I think he’ll be a better long term option than Day.

      1. And in the beginning there was Supercoach. And there was a supercoach God who unlike most Gods was not merciful. He smite down all manner of good people for no apparent reason. The SC God did not rest on the seventh day…this was generally a day of great tribulation for his people.
But the people still carried on….again, and again….somehow.

        (Apologies if any one offended)

  2. Really appreciate the write up Chillo. Great stuff.
I have a backline that gives me nightmares and will take McPherson and maybe Rankine if Brander gets a game this week.

  3. Absolutely torn…think Rankine might have to kick goals to continue to score, so if I go a double downgrade, its Mcpherson and Simpson. Helps solve backline probs and allows me a loop down back.
Or, its Pickett/Budarick to Simpson, and Rivers to Haynes using my built up bank.
Will be blown out of the water come Thursday anyway.

    1. Wighty, Rankine is injury prone. He will score well but if he is to miss 2-3 weeks, will that cash generation be delayed ?
      TU: Another Sturt
TD: 50k gained if he scores 70

  4. Hibberd and McPherson for me should both play out the year, hibberd will just get better and will have much opportunity with the injuries and suspension. McPherson looked solid and back rookies are rare !
Simpson had a cracker but not every week, ranking needs to score goals …

  5. I was set on Rankine and Simpson for my downgrades this week, but it doesn’t suit my team because my DEF is weak. Reading this has convinced me to get McPherson.

Who’s the better pick out of Rankine and Simpson? Simpson less JS but Rankine injury prone and has to kick goals…

    T/U – Get Rankine
    T/D – Get Simpson
