Rookie Review – Round 12 2022

Written by Alza on June 7 2022

The first bye week is over. This should be the ideal time to trade out our fattened cash cows that have their bye such as McCartin and De Koning. The idea is great but they have been performing so well lately. I’m hoping to keep one of them if I can as cover and upgrade the other one but if both can be used to get 2 premos then that is what their purpose was at the start of the season. Wehr and Owens look like the pick of the rookies this week so look to get at least 1 of them if selected. The last 2 weeks of the byes are perfect weeks to use plenty of trades to finish off our teams.

Players on the bubble are shown with an asterisk.

Joshua GIBCUSRIC$325,900DNP (64)77
Patrick PARNELLADE$123,90041 (41)-

The Good: Nick Daicos was back to his best as he was everywhere to rack up 36 touches at the G, along with 789 metres gained and 11 intercepts to give his price a nice boost before his bye next week. McCartin did his thing controlling the backline with 10 intercepts and 10 one percenters. He had 15 touches at 80% as well as 6 marks to almost crack the 100 for us. Hinge played well in the wet and windy conditions in Adelaide. He had 18 touches at a nice 83% with 6 marks and 9 intercepts. He’s on his bye so can be traded if you have a use for his cash.

The Bad: O’Riordan managed 8 minutes before being subbed out after a promising 2nd game.

Time to Trade: McCartin, De Koning (keep 1 if possible)

MIDFIELDERS

Jack CARROLLCAR$171,000DNP (47)48
Reef MCINNESCOL$174,200 (+$9.1k)33 (40)53

The Good: Hately still had his preferred role even without being at many centre bounces. 25 touches at 84% with 0 clangers in those conditions is no easy task. He has been excellent since his 1st 2 games. His Crow teammate Jake Soligo also played well kicking 2.1 from 10 touches. He used the ball well at 80% and also laid 4 tackles.

The Bad: Cooper Stephens held his spot in the side but only had 52% TOG. He could only manage 9 touches even with attending 7 centre bounces. Might not make the 22 after the bye.

Jamieson only had 56% TOG but scored fairly well. He had 11 touches, laid 4 tackles and had 9 hitouts. He’s been serviceable so far as a cheap R3.

Ben RONKESYD$270,700 (-$27.1k)19 (54)94

The Good: Rosas produced his best score of his career with 9 touches, 7 tackles and a goal and was boosted by 2 goal assists. Davies had his best score since Rd 1 thanks to 16 touches, 4 tackles and a goal. He didn’t use the ball that well going at 56% but was boosted thanks to contested possessions and 2 clearances.

The Bad: Naish was the sub once again and managed 2 touches in his 22% TOG. Ronke was the sub and played over a half but only had 4 touches.

  1. Look forward to this every week, thanks Alza. I’ve got some big calls to make this week, rooks still mooing but these bloody byes will force my hand. Byes are such a drainer!

  2. A lot of rookies have the bye this week, so this is where a tough question is asked on who should be kept and who should go?

  3. I asked this in the Polling Station thread but probably more relevant here.

Which rookies are worth keeping through their bye?

Quite a few have low breakevens or good 3 round averages and plenty more cash to make but very tempting to trade them this/next week for cash and upgrades.

I.e. I’m unsure of who to trade out of Clark, Soligo, McComb and Rosas amongst others.

    1. I’m keeping Rosas as has more cash to build- Adelaide after bye and reasonable JS.
But got rid of McComb- break even of 50 and needed the cash grab/ trade up to premo.
Depends on lines L&L and where you need to upgrade and also how you’re going with the byes.
I’m keeping Clark at this stage- as I fee JS is good and he’s been playing new position of wing- get the feeling he might build from here- but been wrong before.

      1. It probably is worth a poll to see who people think are the best options to keep.
Out of the ones mentioned here I would trade out first is McComb. The rest could be held if you don’t have an ideal upgrade you would like to make.

    1. Problem with getting rid of Rosas or even a Rioli is that there are no Rookie forwards on the cusp, and 9/10 top forward averages this week have byes.

  4. Anyone got any insight into Owens’ job security?

McComb will be downgraded this week, Clark a little further down the line – one of them will ideally go to a M/F DPP, and the other ideally to a rookie who should play. Not sure if Owens is that player, or if I go the DPP option now and hope someone shows up in the next couple of weeks who could play out the year.

    1. He’s been playing well in the VFL and then had a great game when he returned to the seniors. I think he laid 8-10 tackles though so his scoring may not remain at that high level but he should be right for at least 3 games I’d like to think

      1. I’m not convinced on Owens for this week. Saints have Hunter Clark, Higgins, Butler and Billings who could all come in for him. Also Steele will be back in a few weeks too.

  5. I really need to downgrade SDK to fund upgrades this week.
I already have 6 defenders for this week, but will need the downgrade target to play in round 14.

Who do we think is the safest option of the defender rookies for next week?

T/U – Parnell (Corky should be fit after the bye)
T/D – Durdin (Could cover for Weitering)
    Comment – Wehr/Cleary/Other

  6. Alza – great article once again!!

The rooks are looking very thin, and not sure that any of the below rooks play either this week or next week:

Durdin – looks like Carlton have gone with Caleb Marchbank instead
Wehr – Whitfield probably returning this week, but for the strength of Wehr’s job security, at least Taranto is another week away for GWS.
Owens – think he might still play this week, but he better do everything right again (as Lock and Load pointed out, there is currently some serious pressure for positions at the Saints)

Then Cooper Stephens -(Geel) he played a good first quarter on the weekend, but faded badly & with only 52% TOG, so think either Danger or Menogola will take his position in round 14.

Jack Carroll – surely he gets dropped out of the Carlton side this week?

And now Rioli Jnr has also been named in the twos for Richmond, so hopefully he holds his spot – as otherwise I will only have 17 on field 🙁

So not sure where the cash generation is coming from going forward???

Maybe Jai Culley for WCE? But Dom Sheed & Yeo both due to come back into the team after the bye – along with Liam Ryan & Rioli.

Would be great if Bevo gave Cleary another run next week – as whilst he is skinny, he looked a pretty ready made AFL player.

Otherwise we might all be already downgrading to $102,400 dual position non playing rooks 🙂
