Round Review – Round 3

Written by Motts on June 22 2020

Richmond (5.9.39) defeated by Hawthorn (11.5.71)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Richmond: Castagna (2)

Hawthorn: Wingard (3), Gunston (2)

  1. Jaeger O’Meara (142). The returning Hawk gun played a very good game on Thursday evening, racking up 23 touches at 91% DE, while also throwing in 3 tackles and a goal.
  2. James Sicily (128). The flamboyant, long kicking backman had a huge 651 metres gained while using the ball at 87% DE, which overall, meant he returned a great score. Looks set to be in the top 6 defenders in 2020.
  3. Jayden Short (126). Played a similar game to Sicily setting up attack after attack. Used his 18 touches very well and pulled in 7 marks on the night. Averaging 96 and is only 363K as of writing this…
  4. Chad Wingard (122). Doubled his score from last week and now has two big games out of three for the season. 3 goals with 15 touches and 3 tackles could probably get him some Brownlow votes.
  5. Jonathan Ceglar (120). A season high score for the big man, who had 15 touches, 7 clearances, a goal and 20 touches on the night.

Other notable scores: Isaac Smith (110) had it on a string with 29 disposals and did a lot of damage in the first half, while another veteran in Houli (110) had 26 touches of the ball. Solid games came from defenders Grimes (109), Vlastuin (105) and Hardwick (101). No injuries to report on from this game as far as I could tell.

Disappointment: I gave it to him last week so Pickett (50) won’t cop the brunt this week, but Tom Mitchell (96) will. I get it 96 isn’t a bad score, but for a guy many of us paid over 600K for, it kind of is.

Western Bulldogs (8.9.57) defeat GWS (4.9.33)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Western Bulldogs: Zilch

GWS: Perryman (2)

  1. Harry Perryman (149). That’s two 130+ scores now this season for Perryman who is priced at around 430K. Looks to have an increased role with Taranto out, he had 23 touches and 2 goals on the night and might be one to consider as a POD.
  2. Caleb Daneil (134). Little Caleb was superb distributing the ball off half-back, finishing the night with 23 touches (17 kicks), overall used at 91% DE.
  3. Jack Macrae (133). Macrae got back into the middle of the ground and showed why he belongs there. 26 touches (11 contested) and 7 tackles resulted in a great score which would be even sweeter if you had the VC on him.
  4. Josh Dunkley (128). Only 16 touches for Dunkley but they were generally found in the contest (12 of them), and along with 6 tackles and a goal, provided another good score.
  5. Tim English (120). Fluffed some goal-scoring opportunities early but overall won the ruck duel, finishing with 12 hitouts, 7 marks and 15 touches.

Other notable scores: Johannisen (103), Crozier (107), Keath (106), Liberatore (101) and Smith (101) all went into triple figures for the Dogs, while Bontempelli (97) scored well despite being tagged by De Boer. Corr (103) took 11 marks across the backline, while Haynes (110) was ultra-impressive with his intercept marking, and late in Hately (108) did his chances of holding his spot no harm. Ash (39) had 7 touches in his first game.

Disappointment: It’s harsh but the 8 that we copped from Whitfield happened and has to be acknowledged here, even though it was due to a concussion.

North Melbourne (8.12.60) defeated by Sydney (10.11.71)

Multiple Goal Kickers

North Melbourne: Brown (3)

Sydney: Papley (2)

  1. Todd Goldstein (151). Two game-leading scores in a row from the North bigman who once again played a huge amount of game time. 35 hitouts along with 18 touches (13 contested) and 9 clearances puts him well and truly as the number 1 Supercoach ruckman as of round 3 completion.
  2. Jy Simpkin (140). This kids ownership is going to skyrocket and by this small sample size, he’ll be an elite midfielder sooner rather than later. 26 touches (14 contested), 4 tackles and 8 clearances now gives him an average of 125 over three rounds.
  3. Josh Kennedy (126). Typical Kennedy game really, 22 touches generally in the contest along with 6 tackles mean he was the Swans leading scorer.
  4. Isaac Heeney (123). Recovered from last week’s 60 with an 18 touch, 8 mark, 1 goal game, could be anything again next week but overall he’ll probably finish as a top 6-8 forward.
  5. Jordan Dawson/Luke Parker (113). The Swans duo provided good scores for their coaches, Dawson’s courtesy of 16 touches at 87% DE plus a goal, Parkers from 19 disposals (11 contested) and a major as well.

Other notable scores: The only other Kangaroo over triple figures was Hall (104) who could’ve been higher if he’d kicked straight, while skipper Ziebell was a point off joining the hundred club. James Rowbottom (110) continues to impress with consistent numbers, while Papley (109), Lloyd (101) and late in McLean (101) also scored well. Popular pre-season choice Bonar (45) also made his club debut and was okay for 8 touches and a couple of tackles

Disappointment: Swans co-captain and popular Supercoach pick Dane Rampe cops it here, his 32 just wasn’t good enough compared to what we expect from him.

Collingwood (12.9.81) defeated St Kilda (5.7.37)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Collingwood: Stephenson, Mihocek, Adams, Elliott (2)

St Kilda: Butler (2)

  1. Steele Sidebottom (150). 31 touches of the pill for the Magpie ace to go along with 6 tackles and a goal, his best score since 2016.
  2. Brayden Maynard (125). In his hundredth game the newly-blonde Pie picked up 23 touches at 87% DE. and along with 6 tackles and 432 metres gained, meant he took home 2nd place on the Supercoach scoring for this game.
  3. Dan Butler (124). Thats actually two hundreds in a row for the new Saint who had a busy game of 16 touches, 4 tackles and 2 goals.
  4. Jack Crisp (114). Another blonde, left-footed backman from Collingwood here, who also used his disposals at 87%, although unfortunately he had less touches and metres gained than his previously mentioned defender.
  5. Taylor Adams (106). Despite a big bump in the 2nd quarter, the tough Pie rounds out the top 5 due to his game of 19 touches, 4 tackles and 2 goals.

Other noteworthy scores: Only two other players in triple figures here by the names of Grundy (105) and Paton (100). Lots of 80’s and 90’s from each side so not much to mention.

Disappointment: Rowan Marshall (81) looks to be really struggling to generate the big scores he had in 2019, and I think a lot of that can be attributed to now having Patrick Ryder to contend with, may be time to move him on with much better scoring options out there at the moment.

Geelong (11.11.77) defeated by Carlton (12.7.79).

Multiple Goal Kickers

Geelong: Hawkins, Rohan (2)

Carlton: Cripps, Betts, Murphy, McGovern, Casboult (2)

  1. Marc Pittonet (137). And here could be your option for Marshall if you’re willing to risk it. Pittonet is about to spike in price and without injury, should get to at least 420K at some point, as Kreuzer isn’t due back for months, he’ll hold the number 1 ruck spot. 9 touches and 36 hitouts were his main stats on the night.
  2. Jack Martin (127). 18 touches, of which half were contested, along with 5 tackles gave the Carlton recruit his 2nd hundred of the year.
  3. Mitch Duncan/Patrick Cripps (123). The classy Cat’s wingman picked up 24 touches and 5 marks in his usual unassuming manner, while the Carlton skipper could be in the Brownlow votes for his 24 touch (17 contested), 12 clearance, 5 tackle, 2 goal game.
  4. Sam Docherty (122). The other Carlton skipper was just a single point behind his counterpart. 23 touches, 9 marks and a huge 578 metres gained brings his 3 round average to 110, a great return to scoring after two ACLs
  5. Eddie Betts (113). 12 touches, 2 goals and 7 score involvements for Eddie, his best game back in Blues colours.

Other noteworthy scores: Levi Casboult (110) was the only other Blue in triple figures for his 2 goal, 9 mark, 11 disposal game. Small forwards Narkle (111) and Rohan (106) both scored well for the Cats, while Menegola (55) and Dahlhaus (7) both had injury concerns during the evening. Jack Steven (20) didn’t light it up in his return to footy but it was good to see him out there all the same.

Disappointment: Going to have the place this one on Dangerfield (75), who had enough of it (21 touches) but used it poorly (47% DE, 5 clangers).

Brisbane (10.14.74) defeated West Coast (6.8.44)

Multiple goal kickers

Brisbane: J.Berry (3), Neale (2)

West Coast: Ryan (3)

  1. Lachie Neale (166). This guy now has a three round average of 165, which is probably the best three round average in a very, very long time. 7 tackles and 32 touches along with 2 goals are huge numbers and he did this in a shortened game. Superstar.
  2. Hugh McLuggage (155). A career high score for Hugh, who roamed the midfield for 26 touches (including 20 kicks) but still did the hard yards with 5 tackles and 12 contested touches
  3. Nic Naitanui (137). Was dominant in the early stages of this game, ended up with 34 hitouts, 5 tackles, 1 goal, 9 clearances and 12 touches, which were all contested, coaches just wish he’d play more than 69% game time.
  4. Oscar McInerney (132). The cult figure at the Lions had 11 touches, 1 goal and 16 hitouts. Wouldn’t consider him Supercoach wise but he’s grown into a dependable player within the last 18 months.
  5. Jarrod Berry (127). Five shots on goal for 3.2 amongst 13 touches and 5 tackles for the young Lions gun, hopefully this can become the norm so we can pick him in the years to come!

Other noteworthy scores: Only two other Eagles above 90 which were Gaff (117) and Sheppard (99), while for the Lions it was Lyons (114), Rich (102) and Lester (106) who also hit the ton.

Disappointment: Suppose premiums for the Eagles in Kelly (61) and Yeo (71) weren’t at their best on Saturday night.

Gold Coast (12.10.82) defeated Adelaide (4.5.29)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Gold Coast: King (3), MacPherson, Rowell (2)

Adelaide: Zilch

  1. Jarrod Witts (147). The Suns ruckman took home the number one score here due to his 22 hitouts, 17 touches, 6 marks and 8 clearances. Could be another option for those looking to move on Marshall.
  2. Matthew Rowell (141). 3 games into his career and he looks like a 200 gamer already. 20 touches, 2 goals and 10 tackles for the kid on Sunday afternoon, a frontrunner for the Suns B’n’F in his first year.
  3. Ben King (130). Probably the best game he’s played in his short career, kicking 3 goals, having 13 touches and taking 6 marks on the day. Imagine if he teamed up with his brother…
  4. Touk Miller (126). You sort of forget this guy exists but he’s been a very good player for the Suns over the years. 26 touches (10 contested), 3 tackles and a goal for the Suns vice-captain.
  5. Hugh Greenwood (116). Five Suns in the top 5 scores, that’s got to be a first in their history. Recruit Greenwood had 13 tackles, 10 touches (of which all were contested) and 8 clearances, all of which are Supercoach scoring gold that contributed to his score.

Other notable scores: Firstly, pre-season hope Darcy Macpherson (111) finally provided for those who put the money into him with a 17 touch, 2 goal game, while Brandon Ellis scored the same. Elsewhere for the Suns, Ainsworth (101) and Weller (108) hit triple figures, while for the Crows, their scoring was led by defender Tom Doedee on 113. He was joined by Laird (107) and the Crouch brothers (Brad, 101 and Matt, 102). Classy left footer Atkins copped a decent knock early on and didn’t return.

Disappointment: Young Crows McAsey (53) and McHenry (17) won’t make much money with scores like these.

Essendon vs Melbourne: For anyone who isn’t aware, this game has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test, with it to be played at a later date. Scoring for this week is bye format, with the best 18 scores being counted.

Fremantle (6.5.41) defeated by Port Adelaide (10.10.70)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Fremantle: Taberner (2)

Port Adelaide: Westhoff, Dixon (2)

  1. Nat Fyfe (166). The Dockers skipper was great at the contest with 17 contested possessions amongst his 23 touches, and along with 4 tackles and 1 goal, led all scorers on the final game of the round.
  2. Travis Boak (159). The guy gets better with age, playing a great game in the middle with 26 touches, 1 goal and 7 tackles.
  3. Scott Lycett (156). He dominated the ruck battle, racking up 37 hitouts and 12 touches with 4 tackles on the wet and slippery night to return his best score of the season thus far.
  4. Hamish Hartlett (126). I mean looking at his stats of 14 touches (6 contested) at 78% DE and 4 tackles this score seems a little inflated but hey, Champion Data knows what they’re doing!
  5. Brad Ebert (116). The veteran is enjoying a good run of form Supercoach wise with 3 tons in a row, this one courtesy of 16 touches, 5 marks, 3 tackles and a goal.

Other notable scores: The only other Docker in triple figures was Walters who had 23 touches and a goal for 109 points, while for the Power, with bull Ollie Wines (107) and veteran Westhoff (114) also cracked the century mark. No other really mentionable scores but Duursma (51) did a hamstring, while Sturt did an ankle.

Disappointment: Connor Rozee (30) had a ripping start to the season and saw an increase in ownership, so this score isn’t great, although he did have an issue during the game.

  1. As someone that couldn’t catch the Friday game, what was Haynes’ role like? Was it a pure loose man or more of a peel of role from the third forward?

His scores from the first few weeks look good, could be something similar to Rampe’s jump last year.
