  1. Reserved for debutantes.

    Hawthorn: Sam Butler(MID/FWD $117K)
Pick 23 in 2021 AFL Draft. The half-forward has averaged 11.6 disposals and kicked five goals across five VFL matches this year.

Several strong outings for Box Hill, punctuated by his three-goal, 15-disposal outing against Essendon’s VFL team.

“A few minor injuries in the pre-season has meant that Sam has had to wait a little longer for his opportunity to make his AFL debut,” Hawks football boss Rob McCartney said.

“With some playing continuity over the past month at Box Hill he has continued to improve, this culminated in a strong performance against Essendon in the VFL game at Windy Hill on Sunday.

“Sam is a player with genuine leg speed, who has a good balance between being a dangerous forward who can kick goals and a pressure player who can help create turnovers for others to capitalise on.”

Western Bulldogs : Luke Cleary (117k DEF).

To debut. Pick 61 in 2021 AFL Draft. 190cm defender. Cleary has impressed for Footscray at VFL level, averaging 19 disposals and five marks per game. He gets his chance this week after an impressive 27-disposal outing against Essendon’s VFL side.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Cleary said. “It was a pretty cool moment, all the boys jumped on me.”

“Reflecting on it now, it‘s something you have thought about your whole life and I cannot wait for Friday night.”

“For a period, I didn’t quite think I would get to this moment, so to finally get here is pretty awesome.”

“Hopefully I can take the opportunity and play my role for the team.”

    Richmond: Bigoa Nyuon ($123k DEF)

Pick 54 in 2019 AFL Draft. Athletic key position player, likely to play in defence. Had 18 disposals, 7 marks and 6 spoils in VFL last weekend.

“He was a vital contributor in last Saturday’s VFL win over Port Melbourne with 18 disposals, seven marks and six spoils.”

“He continues to show great form and promise,” VFL coach Steve Morris said of Nyuon’s performance.

“He had some really good moments… His intercept marking was a feature.”

    Carlton: Jesse Motlop (FWD $117K)
Pick 27 in the 2021 AFL Draft. 176cm small forward, kicked 6 goals at VFL level and averaging just under 4 tackles per game.

    1. I wouldn’t bother putting Butler on the radar. He’s a small fwd who only ave 11 touches at vfl level against really poor teams, 5 goals in 5 games but 3 of those were against the worst team in the comp and the hawks kicked 23 that day. His selection is more of an indictment of Hawthorns depth than an acknowledgement of Butlers ability.
The others are worth keeping an eye on though

  3. Brodie Kemp ( Def $156.800 ) named in the back pocket for Carlton.

He played 2 games last year , could be an interesting down grade option if he hold his spot.

    12

    0
    1. He’s really only there because Young, McGovern & McDonald are missing. As soon as Young is back (next week) and Marchbank has 3 games under his belt Kemp will spend the rest of the season in the case at Princes Park that says “Break glass in case of backline Disaster”

    1. Not sure, Pumba.

Might not have recovered sufficiently or he could need more experience in the WAFL.
He was rushed into the side because of lack of players due to Covid and injuries. He is a raw talent, underdeveloped and made his debut earlier than anticipated. The experience would have certainly aided his development.

      Will he return soon, unknown?

      1. I agree CT.

Really hard to pick any of those WC rookies atm .

Who really knows what their best 22 looks like. Except for Greg Clark, he seemed destined for a game even before R1 , I would be steering clear.

        9

        1. Cheers lads. Still keen to wait for Clark to be on the bubble so I’ll save the boost for another week.

In the meantime, welcome to the squad Touk and Rioli!

  4. Tom Mitchell : On being managed –

Head of Football Rob McCartney: “Tom has been unwell for the past week and as a result was unable to train for parts of this week.”

    7

    0
    1. Hey CT.

I don’t discount he’s unwell but..I have a funny feeling about Tom Mitchell. I think the Hawks / Sam Mitchell don’t want him (or O’Meara) long term. I think they’re squeezing him out of the midfield so he requests a trade next year. They tried to farm him out last year for draft picks.
I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t play a Brownlow medallist in his best position? I’m not sure who would have the cap space to fit someone like him in.
Maybe Geelong if Selwood retires ?

Might be a Neale like bargain next year if he moves clubs.

      1. You could be right FT.
        Sound logic.

I only post factual news and that was the statement from Hawthorn.
I usually ignore rumours and speculations.
I leave that up to others. Not saying that is wrong.

It is just that I trying to have a reputation of reporting news that is correct and I don’t give my own personel opinions or interpretation. Unless ask a question and opinion in a post.

Do I think Mitchell will be at Hawthorn next year? I wouldn’t put money on it.

        9

        0
        1. Yeah I totally understand.

There’s just something off with Mitchell atm.

I could be totally off and he could just be caring an injury we don’t know about. I guess time will tell.

          3

          0
          1. I agree with your original point FT, but I can’t understand it from Hawthorn’s point of view. Why not playing him the guts, where he belongs, with support of the hopefully next gen, Ward, Newcombe, Bramble, Day, Nash, am sure they’ll walk taller having him (and O’Meara) next to them. i don’t understand why we would let him go, or push him out, the guys uber professional, treat him like an on field mid coach. This obsession with what a player can’t do, not what they can really annoys me. As for Shiels treatment, from a fans POV. I’m embarrassed.

            13

            0
            1. I agree. With all the recent retirements we are fielding plenty of youth and we could do with strong leadership from Shiels and Mitchell in the guts. It might have prevented some recent fadeout!

              3

              0
            2. Even if Hawthorn’s plan is to trade him, why force him out of his best role so he has a down year? That would tank his trade value, wouldn’t it???

              4

              0
  5. You can just about guarantee Billings is going to knock out a couple of 120 plus scores, to tempt any coaches new to SC.

  6. Just checked the Teams and the lineup under Injuries….not as bad as I thought…will actually have six players on the field this weekend.

  7. Anyone have some insight on ROB’s omission? I didn’t see the game, but he scored terribly and now he’s dropped? Are the Crows just sending a message, or should I trade him out?

    1. Hi Daniel,
      Just my thoughts,

He was terrible on the weekend and the warning bells sounded on Wednesday. At the main training session, ROB trained with the 2’s and Kieran Strachan trained with the firsts. It was no surprize that he was dropped.
Clearly a message is being sent. Is it for a week or longer? Depends on what the expectations are and if he meets them. If the inexperienced Strachan performs well?

You would expect just the one week but he is out of favour atthe moment.

I intended to trade him this week, this situation made the decision even easier. GD has indicated that he is trading ROB to Sean Darcy.

Not much help but good luck with your choice and maybe another community member might have insight.

      Cheers
      CT.

      1. Thanks for the reply CT.

He’s been pretty good up until this past round (I think he was 3rd or 4th best ruck for the year up until then). I’m assuming it’s one week just to send a message, but am a bit hesitant to keep that much cash on my bench. I have Witts and Preuss to cover my rucks this week, and I’m focused on downgrades this week with a couple decent options on the bubble, so I can probably afford to wait a week and see what happens with him next week.

Reilly O’Brien – “It’s looking at trying to get Reilly back to his best. We had some good pressure below from Strachan. It’s been a conversation for a number of weeks. He’s not at his best.”

          1. I saw you posted that in the coaches’ box – not a good sign for long-term premium status.

    1. “Unfortunately we won’t have a full strength side again due to injury. We’ve lost Shannon (Hurn) and (Andrew) Gaff. Takes us down to 23 AFL players available. We’ll draw on two WAFL CCPs to make up our squad, hopefully just as emergencies.”
