Peter thinks Heeney and Flanders might finish as the top two forwards, and he might be right. But he is unsure of the next four top finishers in the sketchy forward line. The following poll is to pick who you think will be the next four to complete the forward line by year’s end.
A bucket load of discussion around the best of our top three downgrade options this week so hopefully the next poll will give you all a clue. The wider SC community has them ranked in order of trades as follows:
Sweet 28k traded in
Rogers 16k traded in
Garcia 11k traded in
No other players rate in the top ten trades of the week !!
And lastly, this ones for me and the curious amongst us. Whilst I realise there will be variations and caveats on this (which we can unpack later on), and it may change with how you start etc, but I’d like to know your primary focus in playing SC, is it for overall or league wins.

Hi Jimmy – I couldn’t vote on the final question as I’m such a competitive beast that the answer is BOTH! I keep track of my overall rank each season and always strive to improve it (I aim to finish inside the top 3,000 teams) but at the same time, I always aim to make finals in ALL of the leagues I’m in and gutted if I don’t. Great question though – and I do love the weekly polls!
Start of the season is usually most are going for rank. Once it looks more out of reach, leagues is the focus.
Hard to win leagues without a good rank
Generally the case Nato, but I remember a couple of years ago when I finished in the top 10k but hardly made a final (8 leagues). From memory only made on, maybe two as every week I had the second or third highest score in the league, but got beaten by the highest scorer, seemingly every week.
Finished top two or three in each league for points scored, but no cigar.
What?!?!?…… You mean there might be something better and more important than the Sledgers League!!!????
Please delete the above guys, I didn’t complete it correctly and may be taken out of context………
Those very reasons are why I mentioned variations and caveats above. I have not figured out how to place all the variations into a poll but will work on it.
I start out playing for overall and if I have a stinker of a start like this year I firstly try to correct as best I can, but knowing overall’s shot, I concentrate on the leagues to keep me interested throughout. (Although writing on the site does that by default)
I reject the premises of all the questions lol.
FWDs are going to be based on form, fixture and no role. No point trying to discern Top 6 and no point wasting trades and cash on them if you’re stable with Fyfe, Reid, Darcy, etc. You just need Heeney and Flanders. Not playing if you don’t.
Sweet isn’t a downgrade option. He is a must have cash cow or R2. Garcia and Rogers are nominal downgrades.
Finally, this leagues vs OA does my head in. It’s so defeatist and dumb. If you’re doing well OA, you automatically are winning you leagues. It’s two and the same.
Credit to Jim though lol. It’s finicky work creating all the polls on the site’s backend.
I am I the only guy well ranked without Heeney lol
78th without Heeney
Not my job to tell coaches who to categorically pick in a poll thread. Polling station wanted to know the priority they should pick the three. Poll confirms Sweet is a must have. Poll also asked everyone’s opinion of the top four fwds after Heens and Flans. Just trying to give the people what they want.
Agree the overall v leagues question needs more thought. My aim was to see what the strategy was at the start of a season ie do you start with the intention of either, or as you say, be the best you can and the leagues take care of themselves.
However, see note above to Nato, (which I have since checked rank and it was 4.1k overall) so league wins don’t always pan out with high rank.
Completely disagree on your league v overall points. My experience is that the most important thing in leagues is to have trades in hand come finals, whereas overall ranking typically rewards being more aggressive in trading early.
Sure – if you’re ranked in the top 1,000 you’re typically going to perform better in leagues than someone ranked 50,000, but leagues can reward being a little more conservative.
For people that choose to play for leagues how do you often approach it?
When do you start making trades to try and win a match?
Do you only choose to sideways during finals time or does it start a few weeks earlier?
I assume you would be in multiple leagues too, so how do you prioritise them?
Interesting to hear anyone’s perspective about this
Cash league I’m in is the only league I look at . “Try “ not to sideways trade till mid season byes.
I think not focussing on overall rank and just leagues allows me to be a bit more relaxed in my approach.
I often start the season slow as I have more rookies on field longer to maximise cash gen early, and I also quite often have cash sitting in the bank waiting for the right upgrade at the right time.
The aim as with all of us is to finish the season strong with the best possible team and trades left, just can afford to take your time a little more than if you’re stressing about overall rank each week.
Nato in my cash league if I am ahead I will often match my opponents captain or on field rookies still to play to minimize my opponent’s chances to catch up. If I am 100 points ahead with 6 POD’s and I can reduce that to 4 by matching my opposition I generally do. In the last bye round I matched up my opponents J Sharp who scored 67 I think but normally would have played Roberts who got 117 as an example. Cost me 50 points overall but not the cash league win !
Excellent work, Jimmy.
I am sure the community appreciates your effort.
