Best Forward Line – How is yours looking?

Written by Big Sexy on July 10 2013

I did a post last week for the Midfield which sparked up quite a bit of discussion so thought I’d roll with the Forward line this week as everyone is nearing team completion.  It’s all subjective, but this is how mine looks and I’m pretty happy with it.  How is your forward line looking?  …and what trades have you got left to complete it, if any.

Just for the record, it kills me having Lewis there for more reasons than I care to explain.

  1. Best strategy next year would be to fit as many DPPs in there as possible. You need guys who can play up the ground, they just score better and more consistently. The days of the dominant “stay at home” forward seem to be over. This forward line is impressive. Stevie J and Skywalker in for Lewis and Franklin (maybe Pavlich if he fires soon) and that’s a full strength forward line. Staker and Macaffer, as seen in recent weeks, are fantastic bench cover. Especially with very few forward rookies this year…….

  2. Its very good for depth, but jordan lewis and buddy franklin are probably weak points. Not too different to mine in points on ground, or weaknesses really..

Possibly too much depth, im aiming for one donut in each position. The emergency loophole is probably more useful than a 10ppg higher player than your f6 imho.

Probably, the fluctuations of key forwards are the best example of using the loophole.

    Mine is:
Bartel, NicNat, JJ Kennedy, Monfries, Franklin, Tippett (Crozier, Daniher)

I will be swinging staker forward this week if daniher doesnt play.

I will be trading in stevie j this week in place of buddy.

  3. Pretty happy with mine going into this week:

Bartel, Stevie J, Nic Nat, Dusty, Rockliff, JJK with Staker and Kerridge riding the pine. All averaging over the ton except for Rockliff who I’m hoping will lift.

Been waiting to slip the dump bucket under Kerridges teets for a few weeks now, come on Hirdy sneak big Joe in to kick a few bags.

  4. Bartel, Cox, NicNat, Buddy, Stevie J, JJK
    (Staker, Daniher)

But thinking I’ll trade Zorko from my mids and maybe slot one of my DPP fwd/rucks into the rucks.. and Zorkos replacement to go into the FWD line. 11 trades left. Why not ?!

  5. Mine is quite similar and pretty happy with it

Bartel, Walker, Stevie J, Dusty, Rocky, JJK (Rowe, Staker)

Have got Cox in RUC and can swing him into FWD (thnx to Rowe) and play Nicolls as R2 to cover in the FWD line.

  6. StevieJ, Dusty, NicNat, JJK, Rocky, Zorko.

Still regret choosing Zorko over Bartel. I just hope Zorko can score well with a relatively easy finals run.

Rocky has been a bit of a dissapointment too. If he gets more mid time he will be ok.

StevieJ needs to concentrate on playing footy and leave the rough stuff out of his game.
NicNat has had a modest few weeks but I expect him to come home strong.

  7. Mine is very similar also …

Bartel, Martin, Kennedy, Franklin, Rockliff, Ryder (Winderlich, Daniher)

Was hoping to upgrade Rockliff, but the Watson injury meant I had to use that trade … only have 3 left now and want to hold (went Barlow for Watson)

This will have to do … may improve once SC finals start if trades still in hand ($70k in bank)

  8. Reasonably happy with mine, only thing I would change is some one a bit more consistent than Spuddy, I have him on bench at moment but the F6 is between him and Staker

Stevie J, Cox, JJK, Walker, Rockliff, Staker, – Franklin, Daniher

  9. Bartel, Westhoff, JJK, Franklin, Rockcliff, Stevie J with A Black as solid bench cover. Would consider Westhoff to Nic Nat or Walker but will come down to trades left.

  10. S Johnson, Bartel, Cox, Naitanui, Rockliff, Franklin – Macaffer, Taberner

Pretty happy with it. Seriously considered (as most did) not starting this season with Buddy. Made the wrong call there. That being said, I had the same thought with Ablett and stuck with both, so you win some, you lose some as the saying goes.

Johnson was an obvious inclusion once we were told he was playing almost pure midfield in 2013. He may have missed games, but is an elite forward in SuperCoach when playing midfield (will be very interesting to see if he keeps forward eligibility in 2014 – only 8 goals from his 9 games this year, while 5 of 9 have been 30+ possession games, so I doubt that he will).

    Bartel picked himself.

As did Cox, especially once Nic Nat wasn’t going to make the start of the season.

Nic Nat was then picked up cheap.

Rocky has been serviceable if unspectacular.

Macaffer will ride the bench for the rest of the season providing good coverage al la last round. Taberner was playing the one week I needed him to be there, so that’s the only reason he is in there. Won’t play again barring a forward-line collapse to end the year.

The ‘Best 6’ – in pure average terms:

    116 – S Johnson
    109 – Bartel
    109 – Cox
    108 – A Walker
    105 – N Riewoldt
    103 – B Harvey

Interesting to see the number of veterans in there. Walker was an inspired pick if you went there early. Interestingly (and this was more a DT theory due to the use-them-or-lose-them, two-trades-per-week structure of that game this year), people suggested starting with Roo and trading him out once St Kilda’s early season draw was over. If you did that it SuperCoach, and then kept him, kudos. Boomer has only played 8 games, so you can make the argument that Dustin Martin (at 101) is the better guy to have in the F6 position above.

The ‘Fan Favourite 6’ – on the number of selections of the elites:

    161k – Franklin
    153k – Cox
    151k – JJ Kennedy
    110k – Bartel
    108k – Martin
    76k – Rocky

Interesting breakdown there. Buddy (like Ablett and Goddard) just draws in the selections every season, so it’s unsurprising that he is so highly selected. Massive benefit if you started without him. JJK was a cash cow for most who just keeps pumping out the good scores (game winning goals always help, not so sure of the shuffle though). Dusty is finally bringing more consistency into his play (conventional media is only making a point of highlighting his fade-outs this season, even though they are getting better and we in the fantasy community have been harping on it since season 1). Rocky hasn’t been what a lot of us expected as he is still getting stuck forward for too long, but if your F6 is going to play every week and average you 96… It’s not that bad.

The ‘Unloveds’ in the forward line are less prevalent than in the midfield (due to less players needing to be selected and less superstars to pick in the first place). These guys are top 15 forwards (not including Chappy, as he has just played the four games):

    13k – Petrie (11th – 99 avg)
    16k – Stokes (15th – 97 avg)
    19k – B Harvery (6th – 103 avg)
    25k – N Riewoldt (5th – 105 avg)

People (looking at you Robinson, Mark) have been critical of Petrie for not standing up in big games for the Roos this season. Averaging more than key forwards Cloke, Franklin, Tippett and J Riewoldt, as well as more popular picks Rockliff, Monfries (he’s still in 43k teams!) and the Magician. Boomer’s lack of popularity would be in large part due to this suspension to start the season. Stokes has flown under the radar with SJ and Jimmy in the same team and his lack of selection probably stems from the multi-bye rounds and not having too many Cats in your side. Riewoldt? As it turns out, you should have picked him and sat him alongside K Cornes in a seriously nostalgic 2013 SuperCoach team that would have scored very well!

  11. Stevie Jay, Rocky, Buddy, Cloke, Cox, Dusty (Lamb/B. Kennedy)
Having Buddy from the start wasn’t one of my best moves, beware of the uncontracted player.

  12. Mine has a couple of black holes..

Bartel, Ryder, Franklin, Mayne, Dusty, Zorko

Obviously my punt on Mayne has been overall pretty poor and Zorko has been fairly pathetic..

  13. Bartel, Cox, Walker, Buddy, Rocklift, StevieJ (JJK, Sumner)

Can’t complain. In 1-2 weeks I’ll be downgrading JJK to NicNat 😉

Had Bartel, Cox, Rocklift from the start and JJK from round 3 before his price increase.

  14. For a variety of reasons I’ve ended up with 7 apparent premiums in the forward line and 1 rookie

    It reads

    Bartel
    Dusty
    JJK
    Cloke
    Buddy
    Boomer

    Rockliff
    B Kennedy

Given the injuries this year I’m OK with 7 premos down there. I’m hoping Kennedy stops getting a game soon so that I can start using the Emergency loophole

  15. Bartel, Walker, JJK, Rockliff, Harvey, Dusty
    Macaffer, X.Richards (for Staker swing)
Pretty happy but at some point I will hopefully bring in Stevie J. Maybe next week or so but I only have 4 trades left after this week.

  16. I like my fwd line. I think it’s complete. Maybe come finals if I feel the need a can upgrade 1 to an in form forward but at the present time it lines up like…
    Cox
    Bartel
    Stevie J
    Martin
    Franklin
    JJK
with staker and Rowe on the pine.

  17. My Forward line:
    Bartel – Absolute gun
    Cox – another gun
Harvey – pretty happy, just one score under the ton
Rockliff – hoping his average picks up with the Lions easy run home
    Staker – see above
Franklin – average, but gonna stick with him now.

    Bench: Rowe and T.Lee

Pretty happy, not sure who i should trade out though.

  18. As follows:
Bartel, Cox, Martin, N. Riewoldt, JJ Kennedy, Rockliff (Hawkins, Staker).

Stevie J still to come then it’s finished.

  19. I have Bartel, Cox, Martin, Kennedy, Franklin and Rockliff with a combination of Mayes, Daniher and Zorko on the pine when the side is at full strength.

Backing in the Lions’ favourable run home to generate some points but the GF game against the Cats at Kardinia is a major worry if I’m fortunate enough to be contesting a few of them.

  21. Trading out Jobe, is it a good idea to get Bartel in my mids to provide a MID/FWD link or should i get Joel Selwood instead for the same price??

    T/U: Selwood

Pretty happy with that lot. I moved Staker back and traded out goodes to get Pendles, but Jobe has now burnt me.

  28. Very happy with my FWD

Cox, Stevie J, Bartel, JJK, Rockliff, Buddy (Mcaffer, Staker) will be upgrading mcaffer to premo before finals, saving trades for now

  29. Bartel, Cox, Stevie J, Roughead, Walker, JJK (Franklin, Sumner)
Neade on bench in midfield giving good DPP possibilities from Mid to Fwd if necessary.

Have Big Will & Nic Nat in the ruck with Nicholls accumulating cash on the pine there so quite happy with mids, rucks and forwards at the moment.

One or two upgrades in the backline to finish the squad, but with 5 trades left I’m going to try to hold off for a few weeks and let the dust settle. It’s crunch time at Private League level!

  30. Bartel, Cox, Walker, JJK, Dusty, Buddy (Staker, Rowe).

Also have Nic Nat in the Ruck and Rockliff in the Mids, so good DPP coverage there.

Reasonably happy with this setup, just need Dusty to start firing!! Since the bye he has averaged 94.75, take in the 2 scores before the bye and it drops to 87.5!!

Walker has been a little quiet as well, averaging 91.5 since his bye.

Also need Buddy to bump up his output like we know he is capable of!! Since the bye, he has averaged 95.5.

As for the others, their averages since their respective byes have been – Bartel at 105.66, Cox at 101.66, JJK at 106 & Staker at 81.25.

  31. I have Stevie J, Bartel, Cloke, Buddy, Rockliff and Nic Nat with Mayes and B Kennedy on the bench. Happy now that unless I have injury concerns I’m happy with it. Got Buddy cheap for Le Cras and Stevie J when Ryder was suspended for 3 at start of the season.
