Game Chat – West Coast v Collingwood

Written by Motts on April 16 2021

Where and when: Optus Stadium, 8:10pm (AEST)

Last time they met: Finals W1 2020: West Coast 11.9 (75) DEF BY Collingwood 12.4 (76) at Optus Stadium.

Match Preview: Collingwood heads back to Perth a shadow of the team that beat the Eagles on their own turf in week 1 of the finals last year. With their backs to the wall and their coach under a TON of pressure, could they wind back the clock and produce a performance that reminds us all that this was a team that contested the Grand Final just 2 1/2 years ago?

Motts Watch:

West Coast
Flyin’ Ryan. Not because I have him. Because I don’t have any West Coast players in my team and he’s bloody exciting.

Collingwood
Reg Grundy.

Mottsy’s Tip: West Coast by 40 (tipping record 9/12)

    1. A must win for us, CT.

Gutted we capitulated to the Saints last week, who are clearly average. Need a strong win tonight to get things back on track.

  1. Flyin’ is out isn’t he?
Might be able too watch him down a few hotdogs and heavies in the stands though Mott’s.

Grundy the only one for me but like all I’ll be watching Macrae closely.

  3. Update on Flyin’ Ryan.
Liam Ryan has a ‘hot spot’ on his shin. Means 3-4 wks off legs, then at least another 3-4 wks rebuilding fitness/strength.

Likely to be out until round 10, possibly longer, depending on how the bone stress heals. Shin issues can be tricky.

  4. I was going to throw the VC on Grundy as unsure if I was going to have a loophole. But I didn’t after last weeks effort. Should have known better

  7. Half Time – and its the Eagles by 2 goals, and the Pies sub Sier has been activated – DeGoey off with broken nose/concussion and Howe with what looks like a hamstring injury. Darcy Moore will surely need to be moved back in the backline with Darling now with 4 goals.

  8. Moore kicked a goal up forward but was moved back late after Howe got injured. I don’t watch much of the eagles but every time I do Allen is so impressive in a marking contest. Just takes it with one grab so cleanly. As for the contest I think pies are in trouble, outgunned down back and with 1 down on the bench it would be a huge effort for them to come back from here

  9. So Kennedy and roughead have a wrestle. Roughead is stronger so Kennedy gets free kick. Defenders can’t do anything.

  11. Geez Tim Kelly has become really SC irrelevant since he left the cats. Big SC fall from grace

Maybe a good poll this week, SC ‘Biggest fall from grace’ stars… Jack Billing’s another

  12. I feel for Collingwood. The 2 injuries killed the momentum of the game. Sad to see players not come back from medical break

  14. Do I trade Daniher to waterman this round or go Daniher to mccreery next round? He doesn’t seem like a bad downgrade option
    TU – Waterman
    TD – Mccreery

    1. Hey Charlie I think both are decent picks. I’m tossing around the same question. Thinking that so much rain is predicted for tonight’s game scores may be low and l think Mcceery’s job security may be greater so Td for me.

  15. Good win there, CT.

Kinda annoying how we always get out to big leads (40 points tonight, 60 v Port) then let it get clipped back in the fourth, but still a great performance.

System really in full flight in the third, Witherden looks solid, liked Duggan returning to a defensive role and loved our pressure right till the death, which is usually not something we do well. Did it with no Hurn, Ryan, Shuey or Yeo as well.

Props to the Pies though. Was always going to be tough with De Goey and Howe down early. That said, think it was moronic to play Moore FWD against a Darling, Kennedy and Allen offense.

    In sum: looking good, CT.

    1. Totally agree with everything you wrote GD.
Hopefully as the season progress they will be able to maintain the momentum longer but it is not a good trend at the moment.
Simmo was right about putting Witherden in your team.

I must admit I did a rookie mistake and left the VC on Grundy from last week! I could swore that I changed it to Dunkley. lol.
