H2H Battles During Byes

Written by Motts on June 19 2013

We’re now 2 weeks into the byes which means you should by now have formed an opinion on this topic. Last week in our cash league, Big Sexy, who was sitting pretty in second got knocked off by one of the cellar dwellers. With a full squad he would’ve wiped the floor with him.

Have you had a similar experience? How’d you feel about it?

Should there by head-to-head competition during the bye rounds?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Had exactly the same in my money comp, top of the ladder and lost two in a row now in 5th. Admittedly one was against another top hitter, but lost against a ladder carrier as well. Have a pretty well rounded team, so while i was covered for the byes, had same amount of premos out each week as well.

  2. Same thing happened to me, it’s very frustrating, I’ve come up against two very average teams and lost by narrow margins…
After weeks of planning for the bye, none of its paid off….the teams I’ve played just happened to be near full strength, even though they will get belted by someone else the next week for having no bye strategy, I still feel hard done by

  3. You didn’t mention it was by 2 points…….. Dam, it hurts just typing it!

To be fair, I feel he deserved the win on the day…. his team played better, and if Murph didn’t get his face shattered, he would have scored more than 50 and I’d have been home….. All’s fair in love and war.

  4. I’ve enjoyed the challenge of setting up a team from around R5-6 to cover my bye rounds, went into the bye rounds using minimum trades & thinking mainly about maximising the amount of premium players I’d be able to field each week throughout the 3 bye rounds

Decided to go into the bye rounds as close to a 10/10/10 structure with a 5/6/7 premium player structure ( being missing ) maximising my scores from as many premiums on the ground as possible each week……R11 (2131), R12 (2214) scores have taken me from 2785th to currently sitting 590th overall. R13 was always going to be a struggle but having not used to many trades up until r11……..I’ve ended up doing 2 trades for r11, 3 for r12 & will use 3 for r13, again maximising my premium players on the ground each week consistently scoring the most points for my team.

I hope to score around 1950-2000 this round to keep Catta’s Clan in the top 1000 in the competition & with 11 trades left…..make my attack towards a few league wins in August. I’ve found with the amount of quality premium midfielder’s & players in general having the r13 bye…………I’m guessing a score of 1900-2000 should be quite respectable in my opinion.

Good luck to everyone for the rest of the season, especially MJ, Paul W & Russell from the SCT community all still within striking distance to take out the $50,000 🙂

  5. Everyone’s in the same boat. Game on.

It adds another element of strategy to preparing and managing your team, which I tend to enjoy. It didn’t necessarily pan out that way for mine but I’m not exactly challenging the top echelon, at the best of times.

  6. It’s a level playing field from the start and bye structure adds an extra element to sort the Clarksons from the Neelds. I’m a fan.

  8. Another fun fact for the next bye round, Bartel an unlikely starter as will likely be rested.

  9. I do not like the bye rounds as they are like Russian Roulette and not a level playing field … having said that if SC is mirroring the AFL fixture then it probably should stay as the unevenness of the competition stinks but remains.

  10. Suggestion – what if one of the three weeks had a H2H match and SC had a bye for the other two? Eg. play H2H in Rd12 and have a bye in RD11 and 13.

The advantage is that we all plan for the one week and have a more even contest with emergencies if you plan that way.

  11. I’m new to this (AFL) so help me out . . . Why don’t we play SC in the first 3 rounds of the H & A season but have to play thru the bye rounds ?

  12. It’s the same for everyone. I was top without losing a match and lost two because of the byes. It’s another element you need to consider when creating your team and managing week to week

  13. I don’t mind losing to a SC’er with a better team. What I find irritating is taking the time to workout my team so I field enough players and a good mix of premiums each bye round only to come up against a SC’er who hasn’t and fields a great team the bye round he plays me then only fields 13 or so for the remaining bye rounds. If you happen to be unlucky enough to hit 3 of these teams during the bye rounds it stings.

Having said that I do enjoy the challenge of the bye rounds but it can be frustrating.

  14. I enjoyed the challenge for the first bye round, partially because I won lol but after the second and being pipped by near bottom sides and losing my top stop in two leagues I am not enjoying the challenge.. As posted earlier by Motts scheduling the first three rounds as league rounds with a mid season break for the byes sounds like a good option, this alleviates picking/building a team with the bye’s in mind and also rewards homework done prior to the beginning of the season..
