OK so you’ve got a couple of big swinging dicks up forward – maybe a Riewoldt (not of the Jack variety), maybe a Pavlich, or maybe a Neon Leon – and you’re looking for the next big thing to get on. Or maybe you’re looking for a straight trade with not much cash involved for a rookie like Nathan Karakouer that you think has capped out. Either way, these are the blokes I think are this week’s best bets:
Jason Porplyzia ($380,100, 82.50). Remember last year when this guy burst onto the scene? It seemed like every other bloke had him. What happened? Hardly any of the fellas in our league have got him this year but he’s got a handy average on him, has played every game and has dropped $84,400 in price. He had a few lean weeks between rounds 5 and 7 (42, 54, 76) but he bounced back to form last week with a 122.
Ben McGlynn ($228,300, 97.00). Bob, who creams himself at the very mention of the word “Hawks”, was recommending this fella to me pre-season. At the time I just thought it was Bob spouting off again about one of his boys but the kid’s stats over the first 2 weeks he’s played may have just lived up to the Bob hype. 85 against Essendon in R7 followed up with a 109 last week against Freo. His price will surely rocket this week after the Hawks monster The Dees so this guy is a no-brainer. Also plays in the middle.
Josh Kennedy ($332,200, 73.50). As the lynchpin in the Judd deal I must confess to being a little partial to this bloke. If he hadn’t gone, The Blues wouldn’t have Juddy, and I wouldn’t have reason to be laying as many crazy bets all over town on Carlton to make the Top 4 this year as I am. But to be honest he was a hell of a loss for the Baggers. He’s massive, is mobile for a big guy and has a great pair of hands on him. After recovering from injury he warmed up in R7 with 56 against the Dees then last week held his own coming out party by kicking 3 and posting a 91 as the Coasters almost got over Sydney. He’s relatively cheap for a bloke that holds so much of the team’s hopes on his shoulders and will increase after this week’s round so snaffle him while the snaffling’s good.
The ones to avoid:
Brett Ebert ($303,600, 60.62). Don’t be fooled by last week’s 117 against a crappy Richmond team. This guy’s only score above 72 before that was an 89 in R6. You’ll get no upside from him.
Travis Cloke ($299,300, 54.71). It may seem like I’m conducting a vendetta against all of David’s sons this week but their shit performances deserve it. Young Trav doesn’t seem to have recovered from a New Years Eve punch-on so how do you think he’s going to go this week after someone fired shots into his house? I’ll tell you how he’s going to go. To pieces. He ain’t worth the risk.
Mitchell Brown ($242,800, 52.57). This guy is one of those aforementioned rookies that has capped out. If you’ve got the trades handy, flick him – he isn’t going to score much more for you and will lose value in the coming weeks. Tap him on the ass on the way out with a “thanks for the $148,600 you made me, Mitch!”.

For once i have none of the players you talk about ….. and no real need to pick up any of them either, well as long as Higgins and Ziebel take to the field, and geez i’d like Didak to have a kick one of these days.
