One Eye On 2020

Written by Schwarzwalder on July 4 2019

Roo Bloke requested this one in the Polling Station and we’re only happy to help out…….

Of course we’re still in the thick of the 2019 action, but there’s nothing wrong with planning ahead……..

Roo Bloke would like to know if there are any players you don’t rate that are on your futures list.  Anyone you find irrelevant at the moment that is on your starting list for 2020?  Let us know which players are on your radar for next year……….

    1. I just doubt he’ll they’ll give him such a big price discount.

Roughead was priced at $520,000 heading in to the 2016 season that he didn’t play due to his cancer recovery. At the start of the 2017 season he was priced $473,100. That’s a 9% discount.

Docherty went into 2018 at $630,700 and didn’t play a game. This season he was discounted down to $511,300 which is roughly a 19% cut. A similar cut would take ~$100,000 off for 2020.

Champion data have shown a couple of times in the past that they will tweak things from their formula for the benefit of the SC comp and encourage diversity of selections. I’d expect him to lob at an arbitrary $430,000 – $450,000. Any cheaper and everyone will have him. Still think he’ll likely be the most picked player next season.

        1. You’re right. I was so analytical in my comment yet somehow got the numbers all out of whack. Point still stands about Doc though. Can’t see him being sub 400 as was suggested.

      1. I’m pretty sure players who miss two seasons tend to only get a further 10% discount on their first year price drop >
        Docherty in 2020, $460 200 ??

  1. I’ll be watching Ward and Fiorini closely.

Ward will be nicely discounted after only scoring that injury affected 4 this year, should be able to return to 105~. Fiorini’s been improving his average each year (70, 81, 96) and I can see him, along with the Suns, taking it to another level next year.

  2. Thanks Schwarz….

For me this time of the season is always good to keep an eye on a few players from the teams lower on the ladder that are given a new opportunity, maybe a role change and likely to launch into a big pre-season and an improved 2020.

We’re trying to find next year’s Taranto, Marshall. Hmmm….. Parish, SPS are obvious possibilities to take the next step. Less obvious and waaaay more speculative Jy Simpkin if he can get the midfield time he got last round could be underpriced if he retains his fwd status.

  3. I have worked out some really rough prices for next year as of today:

Birchall – 145000 (Chance of playing this year will change it)
Pruess – 146500 (Will likely change due to more games)
    Naismith – 178000
    Longer – 211000
    Roberton – 210000
    Watts – 219000
    Rance – 317000
Docherty – 361000 (Who knows how they will price him after this year)
    Ward – 402000
Mitchell – 495000 (No way they give him the full discount)

Locks for me would be: Mitchell, Docherty, Roberton, Pruess and Birchall if they were at that price but highly doubt it.
These rookies are on the cards if they stay on the list and don’t play this year – H. Brayshaw, Wigg, C. Lyons, Snelling, West, Valente, Ballenden, McAdam, Stengle, Shipley, D. Cameron, Stoddart, McHenry, P. Wilson.

    1. Wigg has been in every one of my preseason team for multiple years now, I just hope 2020 will be the year we finally get to see him play!

    2. Max King a solid rookie pick. Very strong JS barring injury and won’t have this year’s inflated price

  5. I take it the guys picked up in the mid season draft are on everyone watch list for next year ?

mature age rookies that will get a full preseason and have some exposure to the teams systems already.

    1. Those that they keep. They’re only on the list til season’s end. They can ditch them if they choose to or keep them on the list.

  6. I seem to remember champion data making every man and his dog a DPP ruck/fwd a few years back, I think they over corrected this year. Whoever I pick next year, I need to nail my DPP ruck with the Bines type. It’s a trade saver and good coverage for when Grundy/Gawn get injured. Unlike ROB this year, whose points went to waste sitting on the bench. F7/R3 might be my first pick next year!

  7. Charlie Curnows knee troubles will have him extremely cheap next year, rounds 10-13 showed his huge scoring potential, priced probably 350-400k depending on his scores to finish the year after his injury comeback
