I’ll start it off

Goddard, Deledio, Enright, Grimes, Lake, Clarke
(Ellis Bugg)

Ablett, Swan, Selwood, McDonald, Zorko, Gibson
(Neale, Hampton)

Mumford, McEvoy
(Stephenson, Giles)

Franklin, Fyfe, Pavlich, Martin, J Brown, Cooyou, Cameron
(Hall, Weedon)

I’m a tad concerned with only have three premiums in the mids. I have $97k left. Any suggestions on changes?

Plenty of value in the rookie rucks this year, mate, Maybe drop one of Mumford or McEvoy and upgrade a rookie mid to a premium.

And if Ellis on your bench is X Ellis, downgrade him to a rookie back and free some more cash up.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

Mouseman February 27, 2012 at 3:34 pm

yeah – its Ellis from Richmond

I like the idea of a set and forget ruck though but shall put this to the people.

If I give Mumford the chop then I could change Neale into Murphy

Thumbs up if its a good idea or thumbs down if I should stick with Mumford & McEvoy

High risk / reward with your team Matt. Most will be going the G’N'R strategy so therefore a few ‘thumbs down’ will apear. As a suggestion you could downgrade a few like Lake & Porps (who both may not start the season) to rookies which would allow you to upgrade guys like Danger & Grimes to premiums.

dont see why this team is raking up that many dislikes to be honest coops, looks pretty decent in my opinion…
I like your two ruck options, very much a set and forget set up.
I guess the only criticism anyone could give is that there is no real POD, or uniqueness to the team, sure Enright is somewhat of a POD but you pretty much know what ya getting with him, a solid 95-98 avg season. To be honest mate I’d give it a 9/10 for me, strong team indeed padawan.

Don’t forget guys Hayes is only $420k. downgrading him still leaves Soley 100k short of a prem ruck or defender. Maybe offload Coniglio and Haynes/Tomlinson for cheaper rookies and you might have the cash to do it.

Really solid team Ethan but you’ve potentially got a world of pain come bye time.

Three premium defenders and two rookies with RD 13 off & Six midfielders with Rd 11 off.

Some people are looking at sacrificing one of the bye rounds but I think two could hurt you big time.

Gonna turn mine around, I think they start to all look a bit the same after a while, so this is what mine looks like now after round 1 of the Nab.

Fwds: Franklin,Goodes, Fyfe, Martin, Brown, Cooyou, Skinner (Hall, Couch)
Rucks: Kruezer, Giles (Stephenson, Rowe) -also first line for upgrades.
Mids: Ablett, Swan, Murphy, Selwood, Wingard, Macdonald (Gibson,Magner)
Def: Goddard, Scotland, Shaw, Birchall, Grimes,Darley, Morris (Townsend, Baguley)

SFA money left, Rookies that are subject to upgrading to senior list will be closely watched and everything will probably change around again next week.
All comments appreciated, thanks.

Maybe sacrifice one of Brown or Grimes for a rookie and bulk up the rucks?

Goddard, Shaw, Enright, Heppel, Grimes, Clarke, Bugg
(Morris, Wilkes)
ABlett, Swan, Selwood, Horsley, Pfeiffer, McDonald
(Brown, Gibson)
Mumford, Stephenson
(Giles, Rowe)
Goodes, Fyfe, Pavlich, Chapman, Zaharakis, Brown, Smedts
(Saad, Hampton)

Older line up then most people but I think they are supported by some solid options, plus a few are going to be good PODs IMO. My bye stratergy = take a massive dive round 12 therefore being much stronger in the other two byes. Yes havn’t really looked into the rookie player byes because MOST of these will either be upgraded or downgraded before or during those byes, plus after next few NAB games these will change. But I like my set up with 1-3 ruck setup. 3 prem in midfield as this is hot spot for good rookies. And two rookie DPP in middle one F/M and other D/M. These worked well last year so not really going to change that. Im just going for league win as well.

Grimes = very big injury risk, but if he can stay on the park for 6-8 rounds he’ll rise alot in price plus get me considerable points in that time so I look at him like a high priced rookie that def has the potential to be a keeper in my team. Plus with Melbournes possibly new game plan of being a more tough in and under play Grimes could go straight into the guts as this is what i’ve heard he played in his Juniour years.

Brown = I personally don’t see him as much of an injury risk as his two injuries last year were freak accidents. He can be a keeper but yes I have less faith in him becoming a keeper then Grimes so may be out of my team round 1. Although has said this is his best pre-season in many years.

Chapman = injury risk although is having good preseason last year averaged over 100 while carrying an injury and has come out and said he got carried to last years grand final, I see him as a proud man who will repay Geelong with a massive year. Plus is a massive POD. I see him as less of a risk then say a Beams.

Pav = looking very good this preseason and from what I have read he scores much better as a forward then as a midfielder. I don’t have stats on me but if someone can prove me wrong then that would be great. Otherwise I see Fremantle improving and with only Pav as the only decent forward option they will be looking for him more times then not.

No Deledio or Martin may be stupid but with a hard start to the season I don’t see both of them rising much in value and most likely dipping in value probably more Martin then Deledio, however they both don’t follow my bye stratergy so I’ve opted to leave them out. And obviously no Franklin probably my biggest risk but this game you can’t be too conservative.

I don’t think I need to justify the other players, I think. If you have a difference of opinon it will be much appreciated to comment. Thanks.

for starters, great looking team! But I do have one suggestion for you to consider.

If you traded out cox for leue you could upgrade Watson to a more consistent and better prem in the likes of Priddis or Murphy, Unless Watson is your POD and want to keep him?
I’m suggesting this because Cox will be competing with NicNait in the Ruck which could affect his output, Leue on the other hand doesn’t have any real competition in the ruck. also Cox has broken the 30 barrier which in itself is a deterrence for me, where as Leue is going to turn 24 during the season just about entering his prime.

Anyways, once again great looking team, just offering some options incase you feel the need to change up your team as I do daily! haha

Thanks for your feedback!

You have stumbled across probably my biggest dilemma to be honest! The two selections I’ve been umming and ahhing about is Cox/Watson v Leue/Murphy

I agree with your assessment – Cox is on the wrong side of 30 and NicNat is only going to get better (and will take pts from him). I just worry about Leuey’s consistency (he’s still pretty young) and Cox still showed in the NAB Cup that he’s still got a fair bit left in the tank.

Certainly a decision that is doing my head in!

Defenders – Goddard, Shaw, Birchall, Duffield, Clarke, Docherty, Bugg (Smedts, Brown)

Midfielders: Ablett, Murphy, Boyd, Selwood, Sloane, Lucas (Neale, Gibson)

Rucks: Leunberger, Giles (Derickx, Stephenson)

Forwards: Franklin, Fyfe, Martin, Sidebottom, Rohan, Tomlinson, Weedon (Hall, Mcintyre)

$300 remaining

Thoughts? Hall and Mcintyre I will need to see a bit more of in the rest of the NAB. Same with Lucas and Rohan.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Super Snooper February 27, 2012 at 5:21 pm

Pretty strong across the park.

Backs – Duffield and Clarke would be the concerns – Duffield can spud it up with the best of them, and who knows how much Clarke will play – reckon there could be better value at a cheaper price point

Mids – Very strong – Sloan & Lucas were impressive yesterday

Rucks – I’m not a fan of the 1 prem, 3 rooks thing but it could pay off

Fwds – Few queries – Sidebum and Rohan lack consistency but could be nice POD’s

Overall a pretty decent squad!

Ollie February 27, 2012 at 5:53 pm

Yeah, thanks SS, I think Sidebottom will be quite good this season. As I said, Rohan I am still thinking about, and I like your thinking with my defenders. I will see how Clarke goes for the rest of the NAB, if he doesn’t impress then I can downgrade him to a cheap rookie and upgrade Duffield to Broughton maybe…

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Super Snooper February 27, 2012 at 6:22 pm

It’s the old “no-risk no-reward” thing isnt it!

I also think Sidebottom will be handy – just not sure he’ll be a top 7 fwd by season end – there are just too many players at Coll taking pts away from him – Pendles, Swan, Cloke, Thomas and Shaw should all average higher than him. I think he’ll average in the 90s but you will probably need to trade him come seasons end if you want to win your leagues.

Naitanui, Giles (Stephenson, Rowe)

Franklin, Martin, Zaharakis, Dangerfeild, Mcglynn, Pfeiffer, Treloar (Zorko, Weedon)

Im a little bit worried about my bench/rookies, and better ideas?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Super Snooper February 27, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Backs – Carrazzo is a nice POD. Grimes, Lake and Clarke are risks due to injury or job security.

Mids – Move Goddard to your backs. Coniglio is too expensive – you can save yourself some coin and get as good a result from a cheaper mid. Barlow could be OK but he doesnt appear to be getting back to his old self anytime soon.

Rucks – I think if you’re going to do the 1/3 rucks you need an out and out gun ruck as your prem – Naitanui has potential but he isnt quite there yet.

Fwds – I’d be staying away from Danger and McGlynn – I’d prob downgrade one into a rookie and upgrade the other to a Goodes, Pav or Fyfe. Maybe consider upgrading Zaka to one of these guys also.

Hope that helps!

I don’t understand why you’ve shared this link PA, unless you are thinking that my lack of employment of the ‘$’ in my above post somehow symbolises that 26,300 is in fact 26,300,000.

Notwithstanding the fact that I didn’t employ the symbol $26,300k, but, 26,300k, I am not certain that $26,300k means millions, but, rather, feel that $26,300k actually still means thousands. I am open to being wrong on this, and look forward to amending my opinion upon receipt of further information that consolidates that claim if in fact it is the case.
In regard to the link, I am not certain that the author meant millions either given that our Total Player Payment is something like 9 or 10 million. :)

Its quite simple, you used a comma ( , ) instead of a decimal point ( . ) i.e $26,300k = $26,300,000.00, while $26.300k = $26,300.00

The definition that you so kindly supplied Juddy doesn’t state that 26.3k is 26.3 thousand, while 26,3k is 26.3 million just that both in its formal and slang definitions, ‘k’ means thousand.
I would think that the more correct way to express this value would be 26.3k, but, given that 26,300 is certainly twenty six thousand three hundred, I am finding it difficult to reconcile that 26,3k means twenty six million as opposed to thousand. Wouldn’t it be 26.3m? Would 26,3m therefore become twenty six billion?

It appears to be all about perception HGL and your perception in this case (as pointed out by PA and others) appears to be incorrect. If you are unabl eto reconcile this fact I would suggest that we make it a thread and put it to the millions of the SCT fans and see which way it rolls. decimal point and comma can mean so much difference to many. sigh.

I love the fact that this is still going on. I’ve held off about four times but I couldn’t resist any longer.

I think you’ve got a little off the point with the whole comma thing HGL. You originally said 26,300k. That is twenty six thousand and three hundred……..thousands! Or in other words – 26,300,000.

As far as 26,3k goes, that’s just plain wrong. Commas are only used after 3 digits – 1,000 or 1,000,000. So 26,3m doesn’t really mean anything, but 26,300m (if we assume that the ‘m’ does actually stand for million) would = 26,300,000,000

Decs,
Very Risky defence, too risky in my opinion. Drop 3 of Hargrave, Lake, Burgoyne and Davis. I would keep only one of the dogs. Love the midfield, scarily close to mine! ahahah
Cox may be a bit too expensive for my liking, but his nab cup game a few weeks back has me thinking- is he a must have?

hope that helps

Backline: I agree with max that is a very weak defence. Downgrade some of your midpricers into rookies which will score around the same amount. This should spare some cash and allow you to get shaw/birchal/broughton/deledio etc

Midfeild: Very strong mid, pendlebury is too pricey for my liking but its totally up to you.

Ruck: Great ruck choice, set and forget.

Forward : No Franklin in your forward line is a MASSIVE dissadvantage he is a must have this season in my opinion. O’keefe is a great POD no many will have him. Im not too sure about butcher you could upgrade him to Goodes/Martin/Sidebottom/Fyfe etc.

Hope that helps

Backline: Perfect backline excellent choice of premiums, not too sure on Marty Clarkes job security though.

Mids: Solid Midfeild i recomend you downgrade Pendles or Swan to Murphy/ Boyd/ etc.

Rucks: The idea of the 1 premium 3 rookie ruck strategy is to actually use a premium and in my opinion Nic Nat is not the man for the job. Maybe look at Cox / Mumford/ Leuenburger/ Jacobs

Forwards:
Looking good, Johnson is a great POD but a potential risk. Brown didnt perfom as well as i expected in his nab cap game last week, (monitor your forward line during the nab cup) there are some options you could be looking at such as Goodes / Martin / Sidebottom etc

hope that helps mate

Just wondering what your assessment of Naitinui is based on?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 4

NOTORIOUS February 27, 2012 at 11:03 pm

Its based on his consistancy Deano, Nic Nat scored under 100 in 13 out of 22 games last season. Would be frustrating having 2 rucks score under 100 with the 1 premium 3 rookie strategy in my opinion. Where as if you have Cox scoring 110+ and Giles 80+ it evens out.

Hope that clears that up Dean

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

deano February 28, 2012 at 12:00 am

I acknowledge that logic however it is based on the assumption that this year’s scores will mirror last.
Do you not think that Naitinui has upside given he increased his average by 22 pts last year with only one shoulder? He also out scored Cox 104 to 90 over the final 8 games of last year. Based on that trend and natural progression, I think its conceivable that he could go 110 – 115 and has demonstrated his durability only missing 1 game in 2 years.
Interested to hear your thoughts.

Don’t get me wrong Naitinui is a great player, IMO he still has alot to improve on before he becomes an elite ruck. Some people will choose to get Nic this year in hope of a break out season I guess they’ll have to ‘risk it to get the biscuit ‘. I found the stats quite interesting and will make sure I monitor his performance during the nab cap.

Hey guys,
Would love some feedback of my own on this team if thats alright.

Goddard, Delidio, Shaw, Broughton, Clarke, Bower, Ellis
(Wilkes, Darley)

Ablett, Murphy, Selwood, Sloane, Lucas, Neale
(Treloar, Gibson)

Mumford, Naitanui
(Giles, Stephenson)

Franklin, Fyfe, Martin, Sidebottom, Saad, Weedon, Smedts
(Cameron, Walsh)

For M4 where Sloane is, i am also considering K Jack and Barlow “aka fantasy god”

I am also considering Heppell for my defence instead of Broughton because i think i need at least one don in my team as they are my supported team.

Rucks has also been struggling me, but i have NicNat in as a pod, and Mummy in because i think he will be the highest scoring ruck this season. I prefer det and forget rucks.

For the byes i have for each position split into the three byes:
Backs- 1/4/4
Mids- 3/2/3
Rucks- 2/2/0
Forward- 2/4/3

Thanks guys, i am absolutely loving this site.

Mids: Great midfeild but im not too sure on sloane i personally dont think he will be the Rockliff of 2012 names like Boyd/Swan may be suited to your midfeild.

Rucks: Mumford excellant choice, Naitanui will not score very well with Cox taking all the points away. Other options for ruck Luenburger/ Jacobs / Kreuzar(risky)

Forwards: Strong forward line very nice mixture of players.

Midfield: Strong Midfield mate ive got a feeling Fyfe needs to be in the forward line :) but it is up to you. (an idea would be sacrifice Christensen to get Fyfe into the forward line/ Then depending on how much money you have left buy a premium in the mid)

I think were all still looking at those rookies and will be continuously over the course of the NAB Cup, obviously question marks are raised above most of them.

Issues I have:
- 2011, already miss last years format, looking back that extra 1m and bench spaces really helped.
- Smedts, job security?
- Rucks, looking for a solution to R11.
- Dual-Position Players, I feel like I just don’t have enough, also noting I don’t have any MID/FWD in the mid. (Defeats the purpose imo)
I could easily through Fyfe in mid in place of Palmer, but then my best option in the forward is Christensen?
- Byes, go nuts for donuts?

Here’s my team as it stands

Goddard, Shaw, Heppell, Grimes, Clarke, Hargraves, Connors (Bower, Smedts)

Ablett, Murphy, Thompson, Winderlich, Wingard, McDonald (Magner, Gibson)

Kruzer, McIntosh (Giles, Stephenson)

Zaharakis, Sidebottom, Martin, Robinson, Brown, Christensen, Porplyzia (Rowe, Couch)

Any feedabck?….Is there one too many mid-piced players?

Isn’t the porpoise injured?
Don’t like Winderlich as a M4, I think you need 1 more prem in your Mids.
Grimes & Hargreaves looks quite a courageous move, but HGL–not for the first time today-cannot see the logic in grabbing Hargreaves.

Hey HGL,

Hargraves is a risk but I adopted a similar approach with players like Fyfe, Goldstien, Suckling and Yarran last year and got some “favourable” results. If he comes of the half back line he’d be better than his usual midfield rotation. For the price of Winderlich I cant find a better MPP with the upside he has in terms being a definate starter. I agree I am probably 1 premium mid short but am going into the start of the season with a decent bank. Trying to have $400k left over. Currently I have approx $280k left. Want to wait for Pendles to drop in value then i’ll drop the hammer on that trade ;)

HAHAHA!….

Yes you are close. I’m a Liverpool supporter and love how Luis Suarez goes about it. His nickname is El Pistolero.
Some will argue that mid-range players are a risk (and they are) but some are less risky then others and with players like Hargraves and Connors they still have age on thier side and still fall into the “breakout year” possibility. You have to only look back a couple of seasons where both these players were averaging 90+ points. Which would put them in the top 10 defenders and similar to players like Broughton, Suckling with half the investment price and no need to upgrade and still able to maintain high weekly scores.

Hi Guys,

All comments welcome:

Backs: Goddard, Deledio, Shaw, Broughton, Lake, Bugg, Morriss (Mohr, Wilkes)

Mids: Ablett, Swan, Boyd, Priddis, Chapman, Reid (McDonald, Baguley)

Rucks: Sanderlands, Stephensen (Giles, Rowe)

Forwards: Fraklin, Sidebottom, Dangerfield, Brown, Rohan, Zorko, Smedts (Cooyou, Treloar)

Considerations: Would like to include Goodes. Possible way of freeing up cash is trading Chapman for Barlow and then Sidebottom for Goodes.

tried for the g’n'r strategy as much as possible, what do you all think?

Backs. Goddard, Shaw, Newman, Fisher, Clarke, Spurr, Bugg ,(Morris, Wilkes)
Mids. Ablett, Boyd, Selwood, Hayes, Lucas, Winguard, (Brown, Magner)
Rucks. Burger, Giles, (stephenson, Derickx)
Forwards. Frankin, Goodes, Martin, Chapman, Sidebottom, Cooyoo, Smedts, (Hall, Dell’ollio)

$168,000 left over

Not sure what to change, was considering trying to get j brown in there and turning lucas into sloane but not 100% on that yet

Great side! First thought: looks very heavy in the fwd line. Would you consider spending bigger money in the midfield where you’re likely to get more bang for your buck? I’d consider trading down a premium fwd: Goodes, Martin or Chapman for Jonno Brown then upgrading Hayes to a premium. I also think Hayes will take a few games to wind up so may be a better trade option come round 5 – 6.

Has there been a post about different strategies on how to handle the mega byes this season? I’ve tried to make my team such that the backs and forwards only have 3 players missing each bye week – but this means I’ll have to make 1 trade in the backs and 1 in the forwards for each of the 3 bye weeks just to field a team. Hence 6 trades have to be used just to cover 3 bye weeks!

Not to mention injuries, suspensions, and players being dropped – the whole mega bye rounds are a major headache!

Fishtopher February 28, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Going to be harder than that Cat. Pretty sure it’s literally impossible to get through the three weeks without at least one donut. The best I’ve come up with so far is two donuts spread over a couple of rounds and even with that everything has be spot with injuries etc.

There’s going to be some carnage.

Two trades is the best I have come up with, all other things working out the way I want. I actually think this is the most important element to the game this year, and people either haven’t worked it out or are keeping it to themselves.

I agree. The bye rounds are the biggest head f$%# and unless your really going for the $50k prize it’s probably not something that should matter for office competitions or comps amongst your mates.
Most will struggle during the 3 rounds but to really pull your team apart for only 13% of the season I think isn’t worth it. Take the hit and kill it during the other 20 rounds, but if you had to pick a week out of the 3 round 12 would probably be the worst for I reckon 90% of supercoaches as it contains the most bye teams who traditionally score well and have players in the top 20 in each position.

Juddy but not THE Juddy February 28, 2012 at 1:46 pm

You can probably do it but I am tipping that you would have a reasonably compromised team from the outset which would start you off behind the eight ball from the beginning. The way I look at it is that you would have to start off with a team that will only have 2 on field players from each line (exclude rucks just make sure you don’t have 3 in same week) missing in any of the bye rounds. At some stage you would have 3 in Backs or Fwds but you can trade them out to make it 2 after the first week. It’s only a theory but there are too many unanticipated factors (Injury, Selection or General) that will F%#k the best laid plans.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

EL PISTOLERO February 28, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Based on my current team over the 3 rounds I should anticipate 9 zeros. that averages out to 3 per round with round 12 being the heaviest for me with 5 zeros (1 in rd 11, 3 in rd 13). With some trading you could probably drop that to 1.5-2 zero’s per round.

As you said Juddy there’s so many factors and permutations that it would be to hard to predict or mitigate risk straight from the start. Maybe you can start your plans from round 8 or 9 to try minimise your zero’s but to do it from the start and comprimise your team I think is not going to advantage you any more or less. What you may gain in rounds 11 thru 13 will probably be lost in what opportunities you will miss rounds 1 thru 10.
My tactic is to pick the best team possible from the start, get some big points on the board to soften the blow of those 3 rounds.

My apologies Fish, I typed ‘trade’ when I meant to type ‘donut’. I’m looking @ 6 trades, 0/3/3 with my two donuts appearing in R12 & 13. I have chosen 8 R 11 bye players–2 on each line–otherwise I’d either have to wear the donut in R11 or trade into a donut. With trades, I am wishing to trade Smedts/Morris/Magner/Lucas/Walsh & Saad during this period. This leaves me with 18 trades which I want to use in a 6/12 or 8/10 split. Prob looking @ 1 u/g 2 d/g trades each week.

Fishtopher February 28, 2012 at 2:54 pm

Here’s my rough plan:

DEF – RD11 x 2 RD12 x 4 RD13 x 3
MIDS – RD11 x 2 RD12 x 3 RD13 x 3
RUCKS – RD11 x 2 RD12 x 1 RD13 x 1
FWDS – RD11 x 2 RD12 x 3 RD13 x4

RD11 – one trade R11 RUCK to either R12 or R13 RUCK = 0 donuts (and if I have my two ruck rookies playing don’t necessarily need to trade at all.

RD12 – three trades – one each of RD12 DEF/MID/FWD to RD11 DEF/MID/FWD = 1 donut in DEF

RD13 – three trades – one each of RD13 DEF/MID/FWD to RD11 or RD12 DEF/MID/FWD = 1 donut in FWD

Spreads the pain between two weeks and also will take some planning to figure out who and when to upgrade or downgrade.

Worth thinking about though IMO. Even if you are only playing for a league win your strategy for the bye rounds could be the difference between finishing third or fourth or even worse 8th or Richmond.

Juddy but not THE Juddy February 28, 2012 at 3:24 pm

I think that I may have worked out a squad that requires no trades in R11, 3 trades and 1 donut in R12 and 3 trades and no donuts.
In saying that it is an average team to start off with (IMO). The problem is that you would have to have this team (or something similar) at round 10, have cash to upgrade to someone other than just more rookies and have some sort of an idea as to how much these players are going to be worth come trading out time.
My opinion is make the strongest side you can from the outset and trade normally ignoring the bye rounds at this stage. When the bye comes, be smart and look to trade in premiums from the previous bye round and just build the team up from there to make a hard run in the second half of the season with a side of premiums rather than a side that has been compromised to suit the byes.

I see the value of initially shaving points in the ruck to beef up the other lines. It’s just too risky though. Say Cox gets a concussion 1st game, 1st quarter. Your stuffed for two weeks basically. Have to burn a trade, potentially 2 if you want him back. If you run the 2 prems you can absorb the 2 weeks almost unaffected.

That being said, Giles looked OK to me, not spectacular, just OK. He plays most of the competitions best ruckmen in the first 8 weeks of the season. I think even if he plays very well he is still more then likely for a nice warm bath.

Great Kid. Big future. Ruck 3.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Not much love for the 1/3 ruck combo but its a long way up from Giles/Rowe to a premium. Looking for savings could come in the form of:

Fisher/Shaw > Birchall/Broughton
Martin/Sidebottom > Rookie

Also thinking to give Swan/Selwood/Hayes a run but need to demonstrate some love for the navy blues ala Scotland, Murphy. Maybe Robinson?

Then there’s the byes to consider… Ooh, should have done more training in the preseason, starting to cramp up…

Has anyone considered the strategy with regard to the number of midfield and forward rookies starting in the initial 30. With the higher ceiling value this year an average of 65 equates to $350,000. The majority of rookies are valued around the $113,200 mark so if you are able to nail a few there is the possibility of gaining a mark up of between $200,000 – $240,000 for each.
I am considering starting with 5 rookies in the guts and maybe 4 (definately 3)in the forward line. On exposed form at the moment Wingard, Gibson, Neale, Magner and Mcdonald because if they are starters thier job security is sound as all their teams have a deficiency in the number of personnel that are able to rotate through the midfield. You could probably add Zorko to that list because Brisbane have not yet established who is their 6th and 7th rotation. Food for thought maybe?

I like it!

One thing to consider is although these players would be guaranteed starters it doesn’t necessarily mean consistent numbers to help you fight for league position, but if it pays off the rewards could mean up to and extra $1,000,000 in funds to spend on upgrades if your sums are right.
Juddy said it well before. Pick your strongest team from the start and have a flexible plan coming into rounds 8-9 so that you can set yourself up for limiting the zero’s in the bye rounds. That will be my tactic.

If you want the stats that his a slow starter I can get them, but if you’re happy just taking my word on it, he’s slow off the line but comes home hard! And as a replacement i would suggest Fyfe, Only reason I’d suggest him is, He’s about the only prem forward not approaching or past 30 and he’s also entering his 3rd season which should see an even greater output by the nimble framed gun. :)

Goodesy has a pretty nice first half of the year though. He also said last year that was aware of his problem starting off slowly and trying to set it right. Looked very sharp in the NAB hit-out too. I’m giving him serious consideration.

To be honest I’m more worried about his end of year than his start. Plays Collingwood in RD20 and then Hawthorn and Geelong in RDs 22 & 23. That’s one hell of a tough finals run.

Not enough premiums and too many mid priced that you are relying on to become guns. It seems to be a mid priced strategy mixed with a rookie biased midfield. Has disaster written all over it as it is rare (never happened) the the midpriced strategy has won through.

There’s more than two ruck strategies this year hairy cat. 4 rookie approach, 1 prem/ 3 rookies, 1 midpricer/ 3 rookies, 2 prems/ 2 rookies. Check out the footy tragic link below.

Mora has had a setback and won’t play early.
Downgrades to Neale and McDonald will give you enough to upgrade Danger and Grimes to premiums.

You may be a Bomber legend mate but with respect, that team will not make you a SC legend.
Stanton and Risca are Dream Team scorers not SC;
Carlisle and Nahas are neither;
Townsend will not get early games.
Have a look at some of the other teams on the site for a more balanced GnR structure.

Nice team Nicky.
Wasn’t it you that has had Bastinac in your previous teams? Anyway, if it was, its better balanced now.
I would consider downgrading Buntine and Coniglio and upgrading Barlow to a premium as his leg is still very problematic.
Other than that, its a nice GnR structure with Lake your only risk.

change Sylivia to Martin, Newman to S Morris, and then use that money to upgrade Wingard to a premium Mid. Should be around 640K, so you can get pretty much anyone.

Exactly my thoughts Deano. That has put me off Sloane, i had Kennedy last year, and traded him out after 2 stinking performances. Even though he ended up averaging 90 odd, he still wasn’t a keeper. You need someone in the top 10 mids as a keeper. Sloane i think will average high 90′s to low 100′s but you will lose you a lot of points to a rocklike or a selwood. 10-15 points can decide a crucial head to head game.

Magner and Couch will be competing with Nicholson but with Gawn and Spencer on the LTI and Green on vets there is plenty of room.
similarly you would expect Gibson to be elevated with Grima LTI and Harvey vet although I don’t trust Scotty after last year with the two Cams.
Pfeiffer’s only competition is from Irons with Hitchcock on the LTI and Cassisi vet so you would expect he will be elevated.
Week of Rd 1 will tell the story. All I know is that I’m not going to miss out on the Curnow of this year.

I have made a slight alteration to the ‘wifes’ team which was based heavily on premiums in all areas bar the mids. you may want to downgrade one of your backs to bolster your forwards a little. Maybe down grade Hargrave to a rookie and birchall or suckling and upgrade barlow to a premium mid with the cash from hargrave and bet a forward with the cash from birchall/suckling.

Option 2 would make me have 3 premiums in Mids plus 1 semi midpricer on the field, with Mumford and Nic Nat in the rucks.

My 3 gun mids are Selwood, Gazza and Murphy.

- Think Barlow still has some leg problems
- Cheaper rookie mids than Coniglio
- Think you can save $50k by getting another premium ruck than Cox

Agree with ARC on all of these points plus Mids look a bit lean. With the cash you save in downgrading those backs (Hargrave, Lake and probably Suckling while you’re at it) you could upgrade Barlow and maybe Martin to solid premium midfielders.

How important does everyone think DPP on the bench will be this year? I currently don’t have a M/F link up in my mids, but have 4 or so in my Forward. This is because of the great selection of Mid rookies this year.

Thoughts?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Bender February 29, 2012 at 8:30 pm

It’s not as important as last year Maxy, because firstly we don’t have a bye every single round, so no need to constantly reshuffle your team around. And secondly because the new rules allow you to trade out one of those mid-only rookies, swing one if your mid-fwd players from your forward line to your midfield and then trade in a fwd. You’ve then just given yourself a mid-fwd link at the same time as up/downgrading a fwd.

Nice team mate.

You know my thoughts on JS with Lucas and Stevens;
Can Gillies fit in with Lonergan, Scarlett. Enright and Mackie back there or do you have some oil;
Davis could be a great buy but beware of his shoulder with the heavy workload back there.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

PA February 29, 2012 at 10:01 pm

Thanks for your reply and thoughts Deano.
Gillies wanted out of the club last year but has been guaranteed game time this year according to my sources. Lucas could be this year’s Curnow even though he’s priced over the $200k mark, his a gun and knows how to find the pill.
As for Stevens I’m not completely sold on him yet might change him for a rookie who stands out before lockout. Davis is a risk but I think he’ll have the run off role while Mohr being more of the shut down back.

Looking the goods PA.

Couple of queries. How is Gillies for JS at that price? Everyone is talking up Lucas but he has a fair bit of competition and injury run last year turned my off. Stevens looked a bit handball happy for mine. Cameron is a rookie tall forward in a team will struggle to get the pill their side of the square.

Solid Catta. Personally was never a huge fan of the Porpoise and there’s been a lot of talk about the infamous Turf Toe’s ability to linger so 211 might be a worry but can’t argue with the rest. Oh, except Wilkes. 98% JS but he is a pure stopper and also from the looks of it can butcher the ball when he actually gets it.

Thanks Omen,

Yes I grew up at Princes Park having older brother’s that followed the Blue Boys…..so I like the blues, actually more because of The Blue Birds in the late 70′s early 80′s I saw as we sat 15-20 feet from them at every home game!

Yeah I’ve got plenty of cash cows to make me some money up until my SC assult in R11,12 & 13….multi trading, here’s hoping anyway!

Few changes since my team post on the 29/2………..MMurphy out JSelwood in, 211 out Mummy in & I’ve now got around $22,000 in the bank! I think Bower has looked good in the pre-season, fingers crossed

BTW welcome back too Omen, I havent seen many of your late night post’s of humour & insightful digs at the occasional shallow posts that hit our site from time to time! But don’t worry, DamenS has kept those going, which have been GOLD in 2012

Morning Guys,

I’m pretty happy with this team, a few rookies need to be interchanged based on rookie elevations etc. I have taken a few risks, but i find it hard to see any value and consistency in the back and forward lines, so i am waiting till a few weeks in to make a move on some of those players based on form

pick the eyes out of this……

Back
GODDARD, DELEDIO, H SHAW, M CLARKE, B ELLIS, B SMEDTS, T BUGG
S Morris B Wilkes

Mid
PENDLEBURY, ABLETT, BOYD, SELWOOD, GIBBS, WINGARD
J McDonald S Gibson

Ruck
COX, GILES
Stephenson, Derickx

Forward
FRANKLIN, FYFE, S JOHNSON, D MARTIN, A SAAD, D ZORKO, A HALL
Weedon, T Walsh

The couple of players i am not 100% on are: S Johnson, who could become any number of players, i.e. Pavlich, Goodes, Chapman

and COX, who i am tossing up between sandilands, mumford

Cheers guys

liking your team mate.
im a really big fan of stevie j but as you said im not 100% sold on him this season. he is an absolute gun player but not so sure he can match his great season last year as well as that hefty priced tag.
as for the ruck situation, ive also gone with the three rookie strategy and i think if u have the cash to get dean cox, i would hesitate in selecting the best big man in the comp.
hope this helps you :)

Cheers mate, Yeah the Stevie J thing will most likely come back and bite me on the ar$e, i can feel it.

I just can’t trust boomer, or chappy (even though he had a great year last year) and i can’t help but feel that stevie J, is going to have a rioli like season. I love him as a player just can’t put my finger on the consistency. Think i’ll throw goodes in there.

I just wanted to load up on midfielders and see what happens down back and up forward, hopefully i can slaughter come nice cash cows and jump on the in form players…….

For starters, where are your ruckmen?
O’Keefe is injured so get him out.
Brave call to omit Goddard – proven SC champion (although last year he did test the patience). Maybe squish Enright/Broughton/Lake into one + rookie and bring God into the backbone
From what I’ve seen M.Clarke has been picked in 96.7% of teams.

Hey Garry, interesting team you’ve got there.
Personally don’t like Enright; hasn’t averaged over 100 in his last three seasons and at 30 years of age I don’t see him improving much. Birchill and Suckling in the same line is risky. It’s going to hurt come Hawthorns bye week.
Don’t like Dom Tyson as a mid rookie. Don’t think he’ll score as well or play as many games as Sheil or McDonald for a cheaper price.
I’m not sure about HMac… Doubting his scoring potential sharing the ruck load with Goldy.
Forwards look fine.
Best of luck mate.

Hogan’s being talked up more to take over from the Pink Pig but either could still be good value. A rookie only needs to average 60 to at least be value. If they get a permanent tag they will get plenty of game time and get dragged to the ball so while they won’t crank out tons (be lucky if any rookie does) they will still score relatively well.

Some uniques in there Fish. Certainly gets away from the cookie cutter. Looks like you’ve dropped the G’n'R strategy but glad to see some love for the set’n'forget ruck division. Assume you have plenty of cash left over with intention to see how your mid pricers perform.

Just messing around last night with a full blown mid-price approach. Might make this one the mistress’ team. I could never have my real team like this and have to barrack for Ballantyne!

I want to experiment with this one though and compare it to my regular G’nF’nR team. If they all came off (which they won’t) it would be a cracking team. All the second and third year players in there have the potential to make as much money as most rookies and come milking time It will be a lot easier getting them up to guns.

Solid Omen,

2 things though!

Although I’m a huge fan of Lenny’s, I’m not convinced he will be as affective in his scoring in SC. I know he’s capable & at $422 makes him tempting as he’s been in & out of my team!

I’ve never been a big fan of having 2 guns from the same team in my forward line! Maybe Dusty for Pav?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

Omen March 2, 2012 at 2:33 pm

Yeah, Pav v Fyfe is a tough one. Not overly happy having them both in the same line though. Maybe pick one in the Mids? Martin has been jumping in and out of my team like a jack-in-the-box.

I’m predicting a big year from Lenny and if he runs hot it should convert to SC points. Maybe Sidebottom is a better option?

Catta March 2, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Didn’t know Goodes could take points off Pav in the same forward line Fishtopher? It’s got absolutley nothing to do with both Pav & Goodes being guns, the comment is relevent to having 2 guns from the same teams forward line! And I’m sure most of our forward lines will look quite different come R13 bye round!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

Fishtopher March 3, 2012 at 3:09 pm

I kind of see what your saying Catta but for one thing Fyfe is a midfielder really. Wherever he stands on the ground is pretty irrelevant anyway as long as he is smashing out big tons. By your reasoning we should never have Pendlebury & Swan in the same team.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

Catta March 3, 2012 at 7:34 pm

Absolutely not Fishtopher, I would never think that 2 gun forwards would ever consistently score as well as 2 gun midfielders. As per my original post & not taking it out of context, I’ve never been a big fan of having 2 guns from the same team in my forward line! Rioli-Buddy…Rok-Goodes…Pav-Fyfe….Dunstall-Brereton ( sorry reminising there Fish! )

And yes, I agree with where Fyfe plays & smashing out tons but Omen picked both Pav & Fyfe in his fwd line…..chuck either one in the guts & I’m all for it!

A few too many mid-pricers in DEF and FWD for my liking. Think about converting a couple into guns and the others into rookies.

ADAMS, Leigh FWD/MID (NTH) – Good young footballer who will float in and out of the midfield and rack up a few more touch with the extar pre-season under his belt. Bit too expensive for mine though as I can’t see him moving into the gun category just yet.

Big O was just passing on a little helpful advice, that you would do well to take heed of, and then you flip him off with an insult.

Poor form. If you want help in the future I suggest you think a little bit about common courtesy.

Welcome Hodor (Hodor, Hodor!) love your name, that side looks pretty solid to me, but if I can make a suggestion it would be that there are lots of good rookies in the mids this year and they will score heaps and go up in value. With 5 mid keepers already, you may be missing out on some of that money. If you could put another rookie in the mids you would maybe be able to upgrade somewhere else, like another ruck keeper or a fwd keeper. Just a thought.

Hi Squizz, thanks for the reply! My head is going around in circles. I am trying to be mindful of the bye (round 13 dive) so I have considered putting pav in for selwood or scotland in for mitchell?? So I can move them out, or as you have suggested someone like neale in for a prem ruck (but who do I replace!) Arrrgghhh????

Like it Dan bar one thing. I’m going with the 1&3 ruck strategy as well but with Hmac sharing duties & points with Goldstein I can’t see him being good enough to carry the ruck department.

Maybe consider offloading Stevie J and taking a punt on someone like Sidebottom or even Christensen. Will give you the cash to get a reliable gun in the rucks.

If Lake and Clarke are fit and play the back line looks ok. Keep them in for now and watch closely.
I think you need at least one genuine prem ruck. I suggest you upgrade one ruck and downgrade one forward to a rookie.

Okay.. guess it’s my turn.

Watch guys on the injury radar: Grimes, Barlow, Brown, Porps. Alot of risk with those guys. Gimes and Brown a re currently out of action so you will need to re-think.

Be careful not to have too many injury risks and guys coming back from injury: Lake, Hargrave, Bower, Hayes, Porps. Consider reducing your risk.
I think you will also find Mitchell and Zorko are also injured.

personally I think you need to have a gun ruck if you are going to risk three rookies. Consider downgrading Conca/Hargraves to a rookie and upgrading HMac.
