A good mate of mine and staunch Hawks supporter, Dobbo, emailed me the other day asking very nicely for me to rate his team. He put me up when I was over his side of the world a couple of years ago so what could I say?
It’s a pretty good effort considering the lack of information available to him – you don’t realise how much news you miss until you travel to a non-AFL interested country (they don’t know what they’re missing). He’s Gazzified his midfield and made the sacrifices which I think is a mistake and the ruck combination is a huge risk in my opinion but fortune favours the brave and it may work out for him. Only time will tell. All up I’d give this a 7.5/10.
Defenders – All good onfield. Ellis is a bit of a punt given his injury concerns last year but one worth taking I reckon. Trengove I like and Silvagni’s been playing well but may struggle to get elevated from the rookie list because of the play of Barlow and Pearce.
Midfield – I’ve mentioned in previous articles that I don’t think Gaz is fair value at this price. I think your best bet is to dump him for another elite and use the extra funds to upgrade somewhere else. Sean is Burgone and you’ve probably already flipped him since sending your squad to me last Friday night. You couldn’t help yourself with Jordan Lewis but with a 91 average why not? Martin, Barlow and Banner will be in EVERYBODY’s teams this year a la Daniel Rich in ’09.
Ruck – Same thing about fair value goes for Cox. $590k is just way too expensive for a guy that only played 13 games last year. I know he’s good, his 111 average says he is, but he’s a big risk. It might come off for you – it might separate you from the pack – but it also could leave you with a big blue and yellow egg on your face. And when you combine Massive with Hille in the ruck I think you’re really asking for trouble. Its not inconceivable that both could go down and you’re suddenly faced with the prospect of Warnock and Roughead running onto your field to maybe come up against a side who played it a little safer and went with Sandilands (20 games last year) and Kreuzer (22). All of a sudden you’re about 100 points in the hole.
Forwards – You’re taking your chances with Murphy but I guess you know that. The brown and yellow twin towers were to be expected. Gia’s had a pretty good start to the year and Dangers is due. See the tappy team review for comments on TDL.

this is a bloody good team u have spent most money in the backs and midfield. your rucks are absoulute rubbish Naitanui played well early in the nab cup but that was a won off and he wont be consistent during the season.i think that is a waste of 304,000 use it else where
Due to work commitments I haven’t been able to review much of the “rate my team” posts but I fully intend to as the season proper nears.
Agree on how hard it is to pick a team when living OS …. It’s damn hard, good job Dobbo!
