Rookie Review – Round 5

Written by Juddlow on April 26 2016

D Byrne-Jones (PORT, 207K) Hard to ignore a player that backs up from a 97 by cracking the ton, especially in a side with their backs to the wall. In the loss to the Cats, DBJ gathered 26 disposals (9 contested) at 80% efficiency and worked hard to turn defence into attack with 2 tackles and 3 inside 50s. Expect to see plenty more of this youngster this year with both Coach Ken Hinkey and Captain Travis Boak giving him praise post game.

T Lee (STK, 123K) In SuperCoach we always seem to love a mature aged rookie and here is one on the bubble. This 25 year old has reinvented himself as a promising defender. On the weekend Lee gathered 14 disposals and 4 marks for his 72 points. In the previous week against the Hawks, he had 19 disposals, 9 marks and 2 tackles. Lee stands at 194cms and was taken originally by the Crows at Pick 60 in the 2008 National Draft.

B Grey (FRE, 238K) This Tasmanian played his second AFL game on the weekend however it was the first he “earned” with his only other match being in Round 23 when Fremantle rested their stars. He looked promising against the Blues gathering 16 disposals (9 contested), 1 goal assist and a very noteworthy 10 tackles. With Fyfe’s leg injury, expect to see more of this 20 year old. Gray was selected by the Dockers at Pick 58 in the 2013 Draft.

J Smith (COL, 102K) Recruited as a 22 year old from Queensland, Smith was given his first opportunity at the top level on Anzac Day. The Pick 25 from the 2015 Rookie Draft did not disappoint, accumulating 23 disposals, 2 clearances, 4 tackles and 1 goal. In the NEAFL in 2015 Smith averaged just under 29 disposals a game, 5 clearances and 5 tackles. One to watch next week, looks a solid downgrade option.

P Wright (GCS, 187K) “Two metre Peter” faced the undefeated Kangaroos in his first outing in 2016, and he clearly imposed himself on the match. Wright finished his 4th AFL game with an enormous 142 points which stemmed from his 3 goals. He also clunked 8 marks (4 contested), had 17 disposals, 2 tackles and 1 goal assist. Fair to say he should do more than just hold his spot. Wright was drafted at Pick number 8 in the 2014 Draft and stands at 203cms.

T O’Brien (HAW, 123K) This 22 year old had just the 7 disposals, 4 tackles and 1 goal in the narrow win over the Crows. The previous week against the Saints, he slotted 2 goals from his 11 disposals and 5 tackles. He should be granted further opportunities with the likes of Roughead out of the Hawks side and with cheap forward rookies looking a little sparse, he could be your man. O’Brien stands at 193cms and was taken at pick 28 in the 2012 Draft.

M Cox (COL, 117K) The American from Oklahoma State University stood tall in his first AFL appearance on Anzac Day. He had 10 disposals, 11 hit outs and 1 goal; looked to be an important part of the Pies structure. Standing at 211cm, in 2015 he averaged 8.3 disposals and 22 hit outs a game in the VFL. Cox will be looking to build on this in weeks to come.

D Currie (CGS, 163K) This journeyman is now at his third AFL club; after 6 years at Sydney and a couple at North Melbourne, he now finds himself at the Suns. On the weekend the 27 year old faced his former team mate in Goldstein and whist Goldy had a fantastic game, Currie was not disgraced. He showed promise with his 8 disposals, 21 hit outs, 3 tackles and 1 goal.

  1. Petracca watch – another 23 possessions and 97 SC points on the weekend for Casey. I think I’m just about to lose my loophole option!
Great write up again Juddlow. I’ve missed the boat on DBJ, but he looks like a ripper.

      1. Ben Kennedy! Surely SC points count for something in team selections?

Seriously though it’s a good point you make, I’m not familiar enough with the Dees list to answer.

  2. Thoughts on Tom Lee? Worth trading him in or wait a week for others on the bubble. I haven’t watched Lee at all

        1. I posted this in the Breaking Even section (which was probably the wrong section).

“What does everyone think of Tom Lee for a DEF downgrade for either Dea or Weitering?

Was a pretty good mobile / key forward in the WAFL in Perth before the Saints used a pretty high draft pick on him. Has really struggled with injury and form over the past couple of years, but has been used in defence since last year.

From what I have seen of him, he should have pretty good DE, but probably won’t get a heap of the footy”.

    1. At $207 probably, you’ve lost 86K in cash generation if you get him this round – looked great on the weekend though, good run and very tidy disposal

  3. Great Rookie review Juddlow.

Can you add one more feature to your article where you tell us which rookies to field? Tonnes on the bench make me sooo angry!

  4. Gresham watch, 32 touches, 2 rebound 50’s, 12 inside 50’s, 8 tackles & 1 goal v the reigning VFL premiers!

With Montagna having hammy tightness, the Gresh could be in for a re-call for those who’ve kept him!

Rookie Review Round 5

Written by Big Sexy on April 27 2011

Apologies for the short write-up due to combination of a short footy week, a SC league Bye week and I’m back at work having had a few weeks off and in catch-up mode. Anyway, I thought I’d rush this info out for anyone looking at rookie trades before Thursdays game.
My Top Five Rookie’s (<$200k) of the week:
1) B Matera (Fwd 192k) Scored 127, average 71.

3) J Polec (Mid 168k) Scored 81, also just played the two.
4) L Thompson (Def 103k) Scored 78.

  1. I cant confirm this but its what ive heard.

“Port have removed Matthew Lobbe from the long term injury list and put him back on the senior list meaning Irons dropped back to the rookie list and won’t be eligible to play unless Port have another long term injury.”

  2. Lester (Bri) – out for season

    Tidbit for you all.
Only players to score 100+ in every round (barring the byes of course)
    1. Swan
    2. Embley
    3. Mundy
    4. Priddis
    5. Sandilands
    6. Ottens
    7. Goddard

Swan, Sandi and Goddard were always going to be in this list but the other four are a tad surprising. If you’ve got all seven you are both smoking it this year and also a frickin genius!!

  3. G’day guys, been reading these posts a while and appreciate everyones help. Just wondering your advice on my potential trades this round:

A Otten out, L Thompson in

which gives me a little in the bank for:

A Krakouer out, J Riewoldt in.

    Thoughts? Either worth keeping around?

  4. love the fact we will get some teams out tonight, the day after the round finished… hectic!!!

    early thoughts on trades are:
coad to thompson or perderson (im tipping he’ll be in this week, in the best in the two’s and nth are gonna shake things up)

on another note, did anyone else catch the herald sun article on page 63?? saying heppell will be rested this week??

  5. I want to get J Roo, who would you trade out of Knights, C Richardson and A Krak?

Who would you cash in Duigan for L Thompson (JS?), M Watson (don’t know much about this guy) and S Buckley (JS?)

  6. I’ve got some serious rookie problems, so I’d really appreciate some help.
Who is a good replacement for Bewick? Who’s a good downgrade target for Krak? And finally, what are your thoughts on Mitch Wallis? Thanks!

  7. Hey guys.
Trying to fit J Roo in, looking to upgrade Krak but I only have 7K cash. At the same time I really need a mid/fwd DPP player in my mids. I’m thinking about downgrading a premium in my mids to a mid/fwd DPP and then upgrading Krak to Jack Riewoldt.
Anybody think this is a good idea? I would need to downgrade either Marc Murphy, Cross, or Joel Selwood. Help much appreicated!

  8. I’m not sure about my team and would really appreciate people’s feedback and thoughts.
    BACKS: B.Goddard B.Gibbs B.Deledio J.Grimes D.Heppell N.Duigan N.Lower
    EMG: J.Toy C.Guthrie M.Hibberd

    FWDS: L.Franklin N.Riewoldt R.O’Keefe J.Riewoldt S.Higgins D.Petrie J.Darling
    EMG: A.Krakouer C.Richardson B.Matera

  9. Team this week:

Defenders – Gibbs, Goddard, Duigan, Hurley, Grimes, Otten, Pederson (Heppell (?), Batchelor, TOY)

Midfielders – Swan, Pendlebury, Curnow, Boyd, Liberatore, Harris (Pittard, Selwood, SWALLOW)

Rucks – Cox, Petrie (Sandilands, SMITH)

Forwards – Yarran (!), Higgins, Didak, Darling, Knights, Mckernan, Richardson (Fyfe, Franklin, Rioli)

    Tips please?

  10. Good day to all,

I’ve got $166,800 left in the bank, and I really want to bring Jack Riewoldt into my SuperCoach team this week (after last week’s effort, he’s definitely back on the wagon), but who to trade out … Krakouer, Knights or Richardson? Personally, I’m thinking Knights (my comments below), but I’d love some more opinion:

    – Krakouer still has a low BreakEven, so if he gets named, should still make some more money (plus he’s DPP), and you can’t dismiss his 102 in Round 1 and his 81 in Round 3.
    – Knights still has a BreakEven of 43, and given his average over the last 3 weeks is only 61, I can’t see much more value there.
    – Richardson’s 11 last week is really going to hurt his future potential, but he’s still only $149,300, and as such, I can’t afford a direct trade to Riewoldt.

    Thanks heaps.

  11. Thinking Hibberd will waltz into my SC team. Thinking of him as my first downgrade target. That said, if Krakouer isn’t named in the 22 tonight, and with Collingwood’s bye next week, it’s probably a better, although riskier option, to nab Hibberd now and get the two extra weeks of scores out of him.
