Swan v Watson

by Motts on July 3, 2012

The two most expensive blokes in the comp right now and with good reason – they’re both tearing it up with a 3 round average of 141 and 138 respectively.

If you had neither and only room for one, which one would you grab first right now?

Being the Essendon supporter that I am I chose..Swan?? You can’t not choose him!! He is a machine at the best of times and even more so in the second half of the year.
Lucky for me I have both (tee hee)

I went with Jobe on the basis that:
* Pendles’ return will impact Swan’s scoring potential – if only slightly. Jobe’s been doing it all year with Stanton playing next to him.
* Surprisingly, Watson has been more durable this year – playing 13 games to Swan’s 11.
* With the Pies at the top of the ladder Swan is more likely to get rested at some point while Essendon are going to be working hard for that top 4 spot.

Who would you want last round when they play eachother? That is the grand final or have I got that wrong (first year here)?

On ANZAC day both Stanton and Watson were pretty much dominated and Swan was brilliant with 180.

But that was after both teams came off a 4 day break and Essendon clearly had the tougher game prior against Carlton while the Pies played Port Adelaide.

The last round may well be very different with the Pies coming back from Perth the week before but given how Swan performed in the finals last year (cept the grannie) he should still be pumping out big numbers and the Pies should be hitting their peak.

Do I even need to comment?? You all know my answer, but just to ram home Swanny some more I’ll counter some of those arguments.

Swan has had his rest. He said that hammy tweak was a blessing in disguise and that the trip to port douglas rejuvenated him in a similar fashion to Arizona last year; and we all know what happened after that. He also went on to state that he is ready to explode in the 2nd half of the year and he is feeling as good as he has all year – that’s scary.

The fact Jobe hasn’t missed yet is actually a tick against him in my opinion, it means he could be due anytime soon. Swanny has played nearly every game of the season since under 9′s, so I doubt you’d see him miss in the run home, he doesn’t even care, he just eats footballs.

Although Jobe deals with the tag very well because he is a genuine superstar, the fact is, he will cop it every single week. He is clearly the top dog at Essendon and he could be forgiven for being beaten once in the run home. On the contrary, Swan has a history of escaping the tag. With Pendles due back this week he is more likely to cop a hard tag, he was the most highly rated mid in the comp before his lay off. Beams will also cop a tag before Swan as well, as evidenced against West Coast. Other sides may see him as younger and more vulnerable. He is also a score involvement monster. Dale Thomas also cops a tag on the reg, and it will only increase as his form does.

Dane Swan is my surrogate father and I have a concerning amount of man love for this magpie hero. Get him in, give him the Big Orange C and point at your mates and laugh if they don’t have him.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 8 Thumb down 7

as an essendon supporter i started the year with watson and has been great, still would do anything to get swan into my team right now he is a machine in the second half of the year. too bad i simply dont have the ability to with 1 trade left and a hole in my fwd line. unless i trade barlow to him but i think id rather play barlow than jeremy cameron for the rest of the year! haha, especially with his last two weeks being an absolute ball magnet :)
