The New Birch

Written by Motts on June 26 2013

It was announced yesterday that Grant Birchall will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a PCL injury. Assuming you’ve got him and are getting rid of him, who you gonna bring in for him?

If you don’t have him, or you’re not getting rid of him, give us who you think is the best option to replace him.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Brought in Birch last week, can’t believe my luck, hurts to trade out so quick.

I’m down to 7 trades so thinking about benching him and replacing Vlatsuin with Blayne Wilson and pocketing the cash instead, then praying Birch is back sooner rather than later… Tough decisions to make.

  2. I’ll sit him on the pine for week, too excited about getting Ablett, with 8 trades left I’m not sure what to do with him.

  3. What? No option of Jack Watts?

Gibbs/Goddard. But lets face it you probably have them already.

Hanley I would wait another week.

    Malcedki as POD?

  4. Glad he got injured due to buying
Him at around the $570,000 mark.
Worst trade for me this year.
Had Eski last year and he was average
But this year he looks fit ( not injured )
    He’s my pick

  5. If you have no cash and are looking for a direct replacement i don’t think there any viable options. Depends on the cash in your kitty but the cheapest viable trade for Bichall would be McKenzie at $462,900. There really isn’t much in the defensive end this season so just aim for someone who is likely to get 90-100s. Maybe Enright?

If you’ve got buckets of cash and are fully upgraded everywhere else than the likes of Shaw, Goddard, Gibbs come into the equation.

  7. Have the $ for whomever but Mckenzie all day for me. Already have Godd, Gibbs, Heater & Hanley. Loose man in a bottom 8 side so shouldn’t cop a tag. Only bloke I’ve seen get a R50 & I50 with the same kick. Suns have an extremely favourable run from here on in. I also need some POD to catch up to the 94 blokes in front of me.

  9. This is a really tough decision.
I think I’m leaning towards leaving Birch on the pine for a week and focussing on upgrading my midfield to either Fyfe or Watson.
However, Jobe’s admission has changed me bringing him in.
Does anyone else think there is a very real possibility that the Bombers will finish the season being forced to play just Goddard and anyone else who wasn’t around last year?
If this is so, bringing Jobe in now may be a bit silly…

  10. With Lake starting to almost look like Lake of old(92 avg last 3) Birch(92 avg for season) Wouldn’t he almost come into considerations? I would think with no Birch, Lakey will touch the ball a few times more each week down back?

  11. Brought Birch in last week after telling myself all year not to get him as he’s just too inconsistent! Did this last year – started on fire then faded to crap. And bang – does his knee with a score of 40

I have hanley (coming off a 40 odd as well) currently and though he started well is looking pretty ordinary the last few weeks. Trade him out or keep??

Is Vlatzuin confirmed to be injured out this week??

Tempted to go with a smokey but proven gun in Heath Scotland…. he’s around 400k….

  13. My backline reads:
Goddard, Shaw, Gibbs, Birchall, Goodes, Vlaustin (Brown, Thurlow)

Was thinking of giving Vlas the flick, but with Birchall going down am giving some thought in going Birch to Ibbotson, Thurlow to Oxley (for the dpp) and holding onto Vlaustin. That would give me the 4 most consistent defenders plus 2 mid pricers.

    Is this a good idea?
Thumbs up get Ibbotson & keep Vlaustin
Thumbs down get rid of both Birch & Vlaustin for Hanley and a $450k defender

  14. So we have reached that point in the year where weve used almost all of our trades for a premium team and just when we are finally sorted, along comes Murphys Law with a kick to the clacker. I’ll bet Goddard or Gibbs gets suspended or something on the weekend just to rub it in.
Hmm have the money for Shaw but still not convinced there is a few good option in that list.

  15. Birchall going down provided me with a perfect excuse to (finaly) upgrade to Ablett. Backline doesn’t look so strong……..but it’s Ablett………don’t need to justify that!

  16. The way that I’m looking at it is:

A – He has to go. With ten rounds left and he is predicted to miss half of them, that is too long to carry him on the pine. Exacerbating this is Hawthorn’s strong position. There is zero chance that they rush him back in.

B – If you don’t have one of Shaw, Goddard or Gibbs, to me it is a no-brainer. Get them in.

C – With most people sitting below ten trades, I think that you have to play it safe-ish on your trade-in.

D – There are twelve guys that I looked at. This is my thoughts on them, in the order that I would select them:

    1) Hanley
Five hundreds in the bag, two more scores over 90 and priced closely to Birchall, he looks like a good option. The problem is two scores in the 40’s in the last three weeks. Despite this, I think he is probably the best option. He is durable (having missed one game in the last two and a half seasons), averaged over 90 last season (so he has some form), really pushes up onto the wings (and at times further, kicking a goal in that comeback last week) and the Lions really want the ball in his hands. Six of his final ten games come against: Gold Coast, Melbourne, Port, St Kilda, GWS and the Bulldogs. I’m not saying that there isn’t risk attached, but I think he is the guy.

    2) Houli
Really interesting option. Has been a solid, if unspectacular, SC option since moving to Punt Road. Playing a Hanley sort of game where he can run up the wings and even kick goals, this could be his breakout year. Six tons in his twelve games and two more over 90 shows what he can do. Won’t get tagged with Cotchin, Deledio and Martin in the side. If he could cut out the sub-80 scores (of which he has only had one since round 2), then he would be a great get. Second best option in my mind.

    3) McKenzie
Anyone nicknamed ‘The Cannon’ can kick, so that is a plus. Has four hundreds this year and only one score sub-88. Playing as the designated kicker in a team that is improving, he looks a decent option. Any chance that teams would send a forward-line tagger to him? Most teams have a lock-down option that can play out of the forward line and you wonder if, as the Suns improve, they would consider using him on McKenzie. Swallow is also playing off the half-back line which makes this slightly less likely, but as with every ‘quarterback’ option, once teams work out that he is ‘the guy’ down there, they often lock down on them. See: the guy you are trading out. Could be a great get, but there is risk.

    4) Ibbotson
Has been on fire since he came into the team this season. Only really played three good teams (Richmond 83, Collingwood 142, Sydney 82), and the good news is that Fremantle have a pretty easy draw heading home. Has to be considered, but as this is his first season averaging over 80, I’m not sold on him. This is a numbers game though, and it’s undeniable that he has put them up this season to date.

    5) Malceski
Seriously, who hasn’t been burned by the Eski at some point in their SC career?! Here is a really odd stat though: He has only played a full season twice. In those years he has averaged 101 and 96. In every other season (six of them) he has missed at least three games and has never averaged over 75! This year? Hasn’t missed a game and is averaging 93. Seems like a good omen. My problem is my point C above. You have to play it safe-ish I think. With McVeigh also coming off the half-back line and his injury history, I can’t trust him, but if you do, then go for it!

    6) Waters
Was never really considered a SC guy until last season. He has been in the league since 2004 and has missed 29% of the possible H&A games since then. Could well push his average back up to last seasons career high 100, but at the same time he is just as likely to break his leg doing something courageous on the field and then have the ambulance crash on the way to the hospital, just to exacerbate it some more. Love him as a player and I think any side would be lucky to have him, but there is too much risk attached for me.

    7) Enright
We do keep saying that age will catch up to him, and he is now officially old by AFL standards. His SC season averages are slowly trending down over the last four years. Hasn’t had a rest yet this season, so there will be one of them coming on the run home. If you want a guy to average you 90 by scoring between 80 and 100 every week, while playing nine of the last ten games then he is your guy, but I’m shooting a tiny bit higher. Really the only guy in this list that you know what you are going to get from him.

    8) Duffield
Ross Lyon. They do have an easy draw and he has been more consistent this year, but Ross Lyon.

    9) Hartlett
So much talent, and that is his problem. Raised the bat four of the first five weeks and hasn’t done so since. Liable to go very low at stages and, until he can handle one, will likely attract a tag most weeks.

    10) Hombsch
I don’t trust him. Only three games in, young and in a relatively poor side (despite what the ladder may say). May keep it going, but too much of a risk for me at this stage of the season.

    11) & 12) Hibberd & Heppell
I think that Hibberd is a likely All-Australian (in my biased opinion), but with everything that has happened since Mr Watson decided to take a seat on the couch, the only Essendon players that I think are safe gets now are those who are either rookies or were not at the club last season.

  17. Vlas and Birch are out..maybe even Goodes
This week I went Dwyer – Ablett and Vlas – Gibbs

Goddard, Shaw, Gibbs, Ibbotson, Heppell, Goodes (Thurlow, Webster)

  18. Sit him down for a week, let Pearce drop in price another 20-39k and you’ll have a downgrade.

Hanley loves playing against the weaker opponents, and that is exactly what Brisbane have facing them in the second half of the season. Pearce will average 100+

  20. In trouble this week after bringing Birchall in last week & B.Goodes out.

Def. stands at Hepp, Godd, Gibbs, Hartlett (keeping these 4) & was going to be happy with Birch & Goodes + Pittard & Thurlow on bench. Only 15K in bank.

Thumbs UP: Heath Shaw & Clisby in for Birch & Goodes (+ 185K for upgrades)
Thumbs DOWN: Birch direct to Hanley & cop a zero

My thinking is getting Shaw & Clisby in this week is a good short & long term solution & can then up-grade Thurlow to Hanley next week / week after.
