  1. What we know –
#CLUBS will be able to replace an injured or concussed player under a new medical substitute rule. Club doctors have to assess if an injured or concussed player is ‘medically unfit’ to continue in the match. To be eligible for a medical substitution, the club doctor must decide that an injured player will be unable to play a game in the next 12 days.
Concussed players must already sit out a mandatory 12-days.
The substitute is chosen an hour before the game from the emergencies.

    # Rookies to play round one. Updated as they are notified by club.

    2. I read that concussed players were done for 12 days, but injured could play the following week if proven fit to play medically ( whatever that means).

I did just wake up when I read it, so could be wrong…

      1. Club doctors must provide the AFL with a medical certificate on the first working day after the match as evidence the substituted player sustained the injury.

“Should a subbed-out player recover from an injury other than concussion before the next match, he may be granted to play provided his return is ticked off by the AFL Medical Officer.”

Any club found to be breaking the medical substitute rule can be sanctioned “for conduct unbecoming, or prejudicial to the interests or reputation of the AFL, or to bring the game of football into disrepute”.

  2. Latest Team News –
Melbourne: Max Gawn will play “70%” at the ruck position
    Simon Goodwin
Fremantle: Sean Darcy (Knee) “Trained extremely well” on Wednesday
    “There’s no doubt he’s available (Round 1)”
    Fremantle Assistant coach Josh Carr
Josh Treacy has been found guilty at the WAFL Tribunal of striking. He received a two match sanction which must be served in the WAFL home-and-away season. The WAFL doesn’t start for another 2 weeks so Treacy is out until rd 5 AFL.

Dyson Heppell, “With a couple of personnel that we don’t have from last year, it’s a great opportunity for Dyson to go back there. He’ll provide a lot of experience & calmness for our defensive unit.” Ben Rutten

Port Adelaide assistant coach Brett Montgomery
“Lachie Jones will be playing tonight (in the #SANFL). He will be getting a good run out here.”

  3. IMO, this is the future role of all emergencies named.

Surely we don’t think there’s ever going to be only 1 concussion per side per game.

So teams will have 25 “players”, does that mean SC and the Other comp will need to increase teams to 34???

  6. Hi,
Do most people put a 102,000 designated loop hole in their side?
If so, does anyone know what team plays the most Sunday games this year?

    Thanks Coaches!

    1. Only first 6 rounds released.
      Hawks – Saunders $102k mid/fwd good option.
Play r1 Saturday then the next 5 rounds on Sunday

      9

    2. Normally chuck one at R3 cause it’s pretty rare for a rookie ruck to get regular games. This year looks different with Flynn and Meek both looking at a run of games.

I’m going without a designated loophole for Rd1, because I’m fully expecting at least one playing rookie to get dropped for Rd2 and I’d rather maximise my cash development.

      14

      1. I’m doing something similar.
Fawns first 3 make him a pretty easy Captain choice. By then I’m sure one of our rookies would of been dropped.

  7. Stuck on D4 and want some opinions.
Can see upside in each option but risk as usual.
    TU- H. Clark
    TD- L. Duggan
    Comment- Brodie Smith

    1. Think I’ve had Smith in my team a couple of times over the last few years, and he’s always been underwhelming.

Like Clark and Duggan as young blokes facing more mid time. Probably have Clark a little ahead because I think he’ll retain that role for the season, while I could see Duggan getting moved back after 4-5 weeks.

Jack Bowes is another interesting one at that price range. Haven’t seen much of GC this preseason, but I feel as though he’s one they should be moving on-ball. Maybe someone else can back that up or rule it out.

The other option would be dropping down to a Young or Jordan Clark and using the $180-200k elsewhere.

      3

      1. Thanks mate, awesome feedback. I actually agree with everything you have said and have H.Clark in atm. Duggan seems to look good but cant see him staying in the guts. Smith will get a good look at kick ins but he tends to go missing.
I have H.Young already and Im not high on J.Clark because i dont think job security is there when duncan comes back. Think ill lock in H.Clark

    TU – Dunkley, Draper
    TD – Grundy, Daniher/rookie

    Cheers guys!

    1. He has groin and hip issues which the coach Matthew Nicks said “It’s a tough one for me to put a (recovery) time on it”. “The power is the issue for a player, it’s more about him being able to push off and get the power he wants, especially in the position that Matty plays – he’s an inside mid and he uses that strength and that ability to accelerate.”

      5

      1. Am a little worried (especially given the 2 debuts Rowe and Berry were announced separately) that Crouch was 50:50 this week and will be straight back in meaning Berry will be straight back out.
Have to sort out those last few rookie spots!

        0

        1
        1. The two rookies were announced within minutes of each other during a team meeting. The only time gap was for speeches.
Crouch pulled up sore after a training session this week. Even the coach doesn’t know when he will be able to play?
You will just have to make a call about Berry.

Choosing rookies is always a gamble as their job security always depends upon performance. At least when they are named and play they can enhance their chance of being selected for future games.

For what is it worth I always had Berry sitting on my bench from the start as I really rate him as a player with potential. I removed him a week ago when he looked like he would miss but after confirmation of a start he was quickly reinstated. If he gets drop he will make a handy loophole.

There is no guarantees. Just make a choice and if it doesn’t work out there are 30 trades to correct trades. Not all trades work out especially with rookies. Don’t worry too much and enjoy the game.
          Good luck.

Seriously, I just checked logs and I updated the teams at 6.26.

  10. PORT ADELAIDE defender Hamish Hartlett has confirmed he won’t play in Sunday’s season opener against North Melbourne.
“There’s a strong chance we’ll see Miles (Bergman) in amongst the backline, which is super exciting,” Hartlett said.
“He’s done everything right this preseason.”

I’d tread with caution if named as it wouldn’t be a surprise if Hartlett returns the next week for him

      1. Thought he looked terrific in the AAMI. Never thought he’d get a game ahead of blokes like Mathieson and Smith.

That pesky D8 problem is solved (for now)

        3

        0
    1. Not so much. So long as he performs.

Before his injury he was one of the high draft (#15) picks in a strong year. Duursma was drafted after him, as was Rowbottom.

      1

  12. Are my thoughts right that the emergency sub has the potential to ruin a rookies cash gen?
If they are brought on in the 4th quarter and have minimal impact their score counts ?

    5

    0
    1. Absolutely. Whatever they score counts. If you end up with a sub you hope they don’t play unless it is early in the game. I believe if they dont get a game the zero doesn’t count towards their 3 game average? Need someone to confirm that.
Of course this is purely from a supercoach perspective as we don’t want players hurt.
I have written before about my objection to this.

      6

      0
      1. it is confirmed that if the sub doesn’t play his zero doesn’t count and if you have them on the field you get your emergency score.

    1. Hard to say Macca, but the Roos have generally been good for rookies in recent years. Don’t expect much more than 50s from him though

      4

  13. Chad Warner (t/u) or Tanner Bruhn (t/d) for job security?

If I had those teams last night I’d have gone differently. Dammit.

  14. Have we got any keen geelong supporters in here ? Would love to know your thoughts on Atkins? He’s got that half back role and rumoured to be absolutely killing it back there hand picked by Matty Scarlett for the role .. I almost prefer him over J Clarke

    2

    0
    1. Thought long and hard about Atkins and he should go up in value. Job security looks ok but Zach Tuohy has disappeared off the team sheet and will also play some games. Clark provides more run and I think will be good enough to hold a spot for the year. He is best 22 for mine. The real left field option and named in 22 for Round 1 is Zach Guthrie. Looks to have beefed up, uses the ball well and Chris Scott loves him. Better bet than the similarly priced Nick Cox for mine but neither are in my team. One to consider…

On this and watching Ollie Henry tonight. How hard is going to be for first year players who didn’t play much footy last year …? Should we be looking elsewhere at guys like Koschitzke, Jordon and Bergman wherever possible..

      2

      0
      1. I look at mine and mostly I see 102-117k mature age recruits (Rowe, Scott, Highmore), Academy players who have kind of been in the system a few years via that route (Campbell, Gulden) , or guys who have been at clubs for a number of years but not got an opportunity until now (Kosi).

Honestly it’s getting rarer and rarer for recruits to come straight from the draft into teams, and usually those who do are top 10 picks.

This is a trend that’s been going on for quite a few years now.

        1

  15. Anyone got a read on Ned Cahill. Played as a defender in praccy match I think. Thinking of replacing Ziebell and freeing up 100k in fwd line. Good job security ? Scoring potential ?

  16. No way to spend the extra money but tossing up Taranto versus Phillips.

Currently have Taranto (t/u) but think Phillips (t/d) will be good this year.

If I did chop back to Phillips could probably go Oliver up to Neale

I would have thought at least 24 hours before – but the clock’s ticked over Nth v Prt and GWS v STK. Assuming it is a channel 7 announcement in their news bulletin? Just would have thought there nay be a indicative time to announce teams?? Or not…..
