Captaincy Candidates – Round 13

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on June 6 2024

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAWSON v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 110, 101, 105
  • L3 @ AO: 158, 142, 94

No Crouch to gobble up the cheapies and playing the best VC/C side at home. Easy VC this one. Dawson on for 140.

BONTEMPELLI v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 89, 108, 116
  • L3 @ MRVL: 186, 135, 142

Remarked to myself the other week that Bont hadn’t actually “gone large” this season – cue a monumental 100 point last quarter, 38 touches, 2 goals and 10 clearances. Immense. Lions lack that third MID and resolve on ball, so like Bont for 130 this week.

SHEEZEL v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 114, 114
  • L3 @ OS: 114, 114

Played in an exclusively midfield, not MID-half forward, role before the bye and now gets West Coast refreshed. Think we’ll still win but no Reid definitely helps equalize the midfield battle. Sheez solid for 125.

Captaincy Candidates

HEENEY v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 46, 93, 140
  • L3 @ SCG: 121, 109, 98

He’s had a tamer month and a bit but the Cats are so bare bones on ball that a rested Heeney should have no problems going 140. If anyone gets a lock defensively, it’d be Warner.

DAICOS v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 118, 129, 112
  • L3 @ MCG: 105, 150, 128

He’s become an out and out competition best midfielder and contested player recently and it’s been tremendous to watch. Last week he tabled a ridiculous 27/32 contested (the highest CP ratio I’ve seen in years) and 16 clearances against the Dogs of all sides – AND with Gallagher on him for a bit. Just tremendous.

Cut to the Dees, who were laughable last week. Their contested possession profile, for which they’ve led the league in for three years, totally evaporated and their system is well off. They’ll respond, but not enough to dampen a King’s Birthday 140 from Nick.

GAWN v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 106, 136, 70
  • L3 @ MCG: 180, 111, 111

DCam was really competitive against Tingles last week, narrowly claiming the HO battle 51-50 in a high stoppage game. He and Maxxy should challenge each other around the ground, teeing up the big man for 130 and a captain’s performance.

Steer Clear

Dons v Blues

Despite my blunder in the comments last week the Blues have indeed been deploying defensive match ups, namely Cincotta to whoever’s hot. Similarly, the Dons have used Caldwell and Durham in negating roles and have been one of the densest midfields this year. So Walsh and Zerrett are passes for me – look elsewhere.

Smoky Pick

FLANDERS v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 125, 42
  • L3 @ MRVL: 46, 72, 65

It’s more so intercepting DEFs that go off against the Saints and Flanders is a repelling, first up to the stoppage half back but should still be solid for a 120 here.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136
  • Round 8: Merrett 121
  • Round 9: Daicos 147
  • Round 10: Butters 127
  • Round 11: Ryan 132
  • Round 12: Daicos 156

Verdict

Heeney into Daicos for me. Honestly some great options despite three of the top ten players missing this week. Love Dawson VC for those who’ve ridden that rollercoaster this year – some just reward coming up.

  1. Going Grundy into Gawn.

Grundy is averaging 131 at the SCG and against Conway this week. Gawn to bounce back on the big stage.

  2. Dawson apparently still carrying injury and wasn’t certain to play this week at one point so as much as I’d love the vc on him I think it’s a steal clear. Would love to hear your thoughts

    1. I thought the Crows cleared that and he’s good to go?

Bont Daicos obviously tremendous but the Tigers just print 150s.

      1. Jordan Dawson

Matthew Nicks: “He pulled up better this week than he was going into last week. It’s an unusual one for him just around the foot. He’s doing some good work with recovery. He’s really confident he’ll be good to go.”

  3. Great article as usual GD.

I can see Dawson playing forward this week if he’s still sore.

I’ll be following the crowd on Daicos C.

  4. I will be going as follows:

Zorko VC – high ceiling and rarely gets tagged. Just think Dunkley will keep the Bont to a sub C score.
Daicos C – expect a response from the Dee’s mid field but Daicos is just too damn good and should pose a solid C score at worst but potentially a great C score.

  5. With respect to my fellow SCT coaches, and my last few weeks choosing, I should now not take Bont and Naicos……….

    ………Maybe I better take Green and Satan………LOL

  6. Grundy or Heeney into Naicos but Max and the Dees to bounce back and get the win on Monday. Happy Long weekend all.
