Captaincy Candidates – Round 9

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on May 11 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

STEWART v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 161, 118, 92 (124 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 123, 92, 18 (78 av.)

Expecting Stewart to really put his head down and get to work given the reception he’ll get. Tigers pretty horrendous going I50, so plenty of ball to go around for a 130.

ANDERSON v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 105, 106, 55 (89 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 106, 52, 55 (71 av.)

Eagles denser OB than their ladder position would indicate. Similar to Taranto last week, think they’ll be too good to be true for Anderson this time around – but fine if you want to christen the recruit with the VC and hunt for a 120.

SATAN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 119, 139, 115 (124 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 134, 98, 156 (129 av.)

Requires so little commentary. It’s Satan v Hawks. Auto 125+.

Captaincy Candidates

BONTEMPELLI v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 105, 155, 116 (125 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 122, 89, 125 (112 av.)

Bont is in pure Brownlow form and has single-handedly dragged the Dogs back into the eight. The Blues, on the other hand, are in shambles and have lost their secret sauce of an elite engine room. Slaughters them for 140.

ENGLISH v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 99, 105, 99 (101 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 90, 139, 139 (123 av.)

Backing him in for a standard outing. A low TOG Pittonet is also nice. Hits his 130 average comfortably.

DAWSON v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 130, 85, 89 (101 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 150, 152, 173 (158 av.)

Tricky to get a read on the Saints as a midfield opponent but playing at home gives Dawson a safe enough floor. His form and scoring stream remain fantastic, 120 at a minimum.

Steer Clear

DAICOS v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 93 (93 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 81, 145, 109 (112 av.)

Watch sheets to see if there’s a direct tagging match up. Can actually the Giants leaving him alone given last fortnight’s tags have only restricted his use and the Pies still won but with Satan and the Big Dogs available, I wouldn’t bother with Daicos as a straight C.

Smoky Pick

ROZEE v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 116, 109, 102 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: 116 (116 av.)

A pretty standard VC flyer against North and Rozee totally the type to love a downhill ski and angle for a 30 touch, 3 goal and 140 outing against a bottom side.

GAWN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 172, 95, 172 (146 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 80, 98, 140 (106 av.)

Really elevated his game outside of center bounce and the Hawks have marking issues at both ends. He’ll carve it up when rucking and then have a juicy around the ground scoring stream for both sitting in the hole intercepts and scoreboard involvement. Loves a 172 against the Hawks!

History

  • Round 1: Green 132
  • Round 2: Baird 147
  • Round 3: Satan 156
  • Round 4: Tingles 145
  • Round 5: Tingles 137
  • Round 6: Miller 40
  • Round 7: Satan 134
  • Round 8: Satan 136

Verdict

Satan into Bont/English. It’s not even a question this week.

  1. I’m hitting up Stewart as my VC this week, will take anything above 130. Lots of good options for the C, toss up between Bont and Dawson. Good luck all.

    1. Well, not to be blunt but:

      – one is named, one isn’t
      – one is averaging 132, one isn’t
      – one is the #1 SC player rn, one isn’t
      – one is playing a sinking ship, one is playing the 1st on the ladder

      Very easily Bont.

        1. Think gd was inferring to Green not named/mentioned in his write up on captain selection, whereas Bont is.

      1. Went VC Bont. Tom Green bad choice apparently so howabout for C? (Have it on Dawson just now)
        TU- Dawson
        TD- Laird
        Thanks

    2. I’m taking a punt on Green for Dream Team where he was been scoring so high.
Yes, Blues struggling as you say but might turn it around too, currently 8th so not hopeless

  2. Would like to VC Rozee but the man start so slow I’ll stick with the safer option VC Oliver C Bont

  3. Team 1 Satan vc English Capt
Team 2 Witts vc Satan Capt

Apologies in advance to all similar holders…….

  4. I have 2 loopholes – Roberts or DVR. If DVR wins his appeal, then I have to have a Friday night VC. I think Stewart. Expect Geelongs midfield to keep Taranto in check, even though his scoring is quite ok at the moment.

If DVR doesn’t win his appeal, then I like the downhill skier in Rozee. Agree with GD that he’s the sort that could pull a 150 from nowhere in this matchup.

Brought Gawn in for Grundy this week, and heavily considering putting the C on him. Just a bit worried that they try to play Grundy into some form. If the game is won, can see Gawn just putting the cue in the rack, hang around at full forward and have a chat with Frosty.

Hard to go past Bont as C. But I do fancy Dunkley against the Bombers.

    1. Darcy sensational. Honestly didn’t clock him but, yes, superb v Ladhams and Swans high rotation midfield.

Nash tends to give up a lot of space and hunt the ball himself. Baird wriggled to a 126. Suppose he could go to Satan but has the safety of being VC.

Hewett, despite what the goons at FF said, didn’t play a negating role on Neale – Neale was just ass. Hewett played his own, rather decent, game. Blues engine room appalling as a whole, Bont smokes them.

  5. Id have to say Witts against a Eagles side without Nic Nat would be a great VC this week. Williams has been leaking points to rucks (Ryan last week, Pittonett and Blics a few weeks back).

    Thoughts?

      1. I wouldnt say a miss by you GD as Anderson has been flying while Witts has not set the world on fire at all this year.

Every ruck who played a full game against Williams other then Teakle (85 which is his highest score so far) has tonned up. Further more this has generally been their highest score so far and as i mentioned above alot of them arent top tier rucks like Witts.

Keep up the good work mate. Great read every week.

    1. Yep- not any floating donuts after the Sydney game so have to go Witts as VC, then decide on either …
      TU Clarry
      TD Dawson

  6. I was going to go a very standard Satan/Bont vc/c options, until I saw Dawson’s last 3 Adelaide Oval scores…wow!
So it’s going to be Bont into Dawson for me this round…though I somehow feel almost naked not having Clarry as one of my 2 this week

  7. Think I’m gonna go a smokey for VC this week as there’s a few safe C options if it fails.

Feel like Jezza is due a big one after a couple quieter weeks. I’m not expecting the tigs to be push overs but Jez loves to run and on the big MCG paddock should hopefully run a muck.

If that fails then I’ll go with either Bont or Dawson.

  8. Anyone else thinking of VCing Stewart. Richmond unlikely to tag and can see him racking them up tonight

  9. Hi GD,

Bringing in Gawn this week as my VC v Hawks, as you have stated…his stats against them are huge, and he kicking goals!

    * L3 v Hawks: 172, 95, 172 (146 av.)

If VC fails…..C will be Dawson, as Saints mid’s give up heaps to opposition mid’s.

Thanks for your help again 🙂

    Cheers,

    Paul

  10. Is anyone considering Neale? His stats against the dons are very good but feel its either a flat 100 or 150+.. so

    T/U Stewart 115 VC
    T/D Neale C
