Game Chat – Geelong v Collingwood

Written by Motts on July 16 2020

Where and when: Thursday 8:10pm (AEST) at Optus Stadium.

Last time they met:

Friday September 6, 2019 – Week 1 of the 2019 Finals

Geelong 7.9 (51) def by Collingwood 9.7 (61) at the ‘G.

What it means for Geelong: An opportunity to avenge their dumping from the 2019 Finals series and to put their 4th straight win on the board since being smashed at home by The Mighty Blues in Round 3.

What it means for Collingwood: A strong win against the Hawks last week got their season back on track. Another win this week would see them back in Top 4.

Mottsy Watch: Grundy of course. But also keen to see if the Geelong kid Simpson can back up his ton from last week.

Mottsy’s Tip: Geelong by 20.

  1. Lot of last minute questions involving Simpson.

Anyone got any insight on his JS? Played with Duncan in the team last week, so probably more to it than a simple swap idk.

    1. Idk either GD, but I’m deciding between McPherson to boost my DEF rookies or add Simpson to my MID given Fyfe is out. I agree with you about the 2x downgrade this week and sort out Fyfe next week.

I think go with Simpson based on ceiling and current predicament, it’s probably between him or Clark on who goes out for Duncan/Narkle, although we possibly have 2-3 weeks to sort that out..

      1. Yeah, McPherson’s score was inflated by how much the Eagles were getting it I50 last week. I’m going Simpson, then I’ll bring in a DEF premo next week to settle things down.

Simpson gives me another reason to watch the game tonight lol.

        1. Very much on the same page with that one – also I can’t wait until Monday to see if McPherson outscores Simpson, delayed gratification is not my strong suit

  2. Who to trade out (was going to be Noble) has become the last minute decision! Will be double downgrading and have plenty of DPP to use.
Current options are: Starcevich, T Green, McInerney or Brander.
Anyone know when Brander is likely to be back?
Green and McInerney both named emergency, shame McInerney didn’t get a game with all the swans outs, makes me think he’s going to find it tough making his way back in. Green also got poor game time last week and clearly out of favour
Starcevich will lose money, but he’s playing at least!
ANyone have a suggestion, I’d love to hear it!

    1. I’m going to hold Starcevich, as at least he’s playing and I don’t love the downgrade options on offer this week. Don’t have anyone to DPP him with so will hold him. May well end up staying as my loophole D7 for the rest of the year as he’s in Brisbane’s best 22 and is obviously capable of throwing in a solid score periodically.
I’m going to cut McInerney free because I agree with you that if he can’t make the cut this week then he’ll need further injuries to get another run. Will bring Simpson in for him.
Still undecided on my other trade but it will either be Budarick or Green for Rankine.

  3. What is the word on Duncan & Narkle hammies – 3 weeks each?
i.e. does that give Simpson at least 3 to make cash?
    OR
Day is named as HF – who displaces him ?

    TU: Simpson
    TD: Day

  4. To trade in Rankine, who makes way
TU- McInerney / T Greene via DPP
TD- D Cameron / B Davis (my only rookie who hasn’t played a game)

    7

    4
    1. Send Mac packing. McInerney couldn’t find his way back in despite all the injuries to the Swans this week. Greene will bob up again.

  5. After all my intentions of wanting Starcevich gone, he stays…..
Needed to bring in Simpson otherwise doughnut in the midfield and then Rankine looking real promising. Leaves me frustrated but can’t have everything go my way

      1. Let’s just hope he pumps out a decent score so it feels like we haven’t been punished for having to hold him

  6. Think Starcevich will go alright this weekend was cleaned up by Rohan in the first quarter last week and was looking alright prior to that, to be honest can’t believe Rohan’s playing tonight, was reported on the spot for that incident and should’ve gone on video for another incident shortly after.

  10. Oh ffs, Simpson. When no one knew who you were last week you sailed to 112, now when I bring you in you’re feeling more of a 12 closing in on half time?

    Tremendous…

    1. Hey GD

I just had to pass on Simpson.
He really just came from no where.
Stevens in, made me extra nervous.

I paid the bit more for M Hibberd. Proven numbers at VFL.
Named in the guts and no Bye in the next fixture.

I still may go Rankine as well.

I need something to right this season.

  14. Someone who loves stats needs to analyze the number of rookies who pump out a monster score in their first career match and then fail to back up.

    4

    1
    1. I always remember from previous years not to chase after rookies until 2 games all due to this. Learn from many rookies their 1st game is likely a one off after seeing their 2nd

      1

      1
    2. Simpson has been around for a few years, has played 6 games since 2017. Hasn’t done much, never got a lot of love from me during my rookie reviews.

But did I get him? You bet.

  15. I was avoiding Simpson, but needed to bring him due to doughnuts. Don’t tell me I had the right intentions but was forced into the wrong ones…….

    3

    1
    1. Sorry mate, I wasn’t questioning Simpson, I was just thinking how many times players have played a great match and then fallen flat, often getting dropped in a week or two. Simpson looks a handy selection for cash generation – should go 60+

      5

    1. These are the sort of questions that made me write that article on loopholes. Don’t you have a limit on what is considered a lock for rookies scores?

      13

      1. Nato: what’s wrong with you, people!?!

I feel you, Nato. 60’s the pass mark for me.

        Great article btw.

        1. Thanks GD!
I found it rather interesting to understand how many coaches operate. I was sort of hoping Grundy to score 130 tonight as it would have left a really interesting decision for many as Neale could be tagged but Gawn playing McEvoy. Would have been a great to see the different outcomes

          1

          0
      2. If I had a limit it would probably be 85 & I have to calculate my other rookie loophole scores
        Venue opponent role etc
Although I usually get it totally wrong

        1

        1
        1. Don’t worry about not reading it, but 85 is quite a large score for a rookie, I must say.
You aren’t going to see many rookies make the tonne, but it isn’t a surprise when they don’t do much for the game and struggle to make 50.
When comparing likely risk v reward it can help you set a reasonable limit, as a score of 40 isn’t giving much risk, but 85 not much reward is likely for the amount of risk

          6

          0
        2. 85 seems huge for a rookie to not pass on, especially when their averages are usually sub 60. I’d be taking the 75. Points in the bank.

  18. With a BE of -61 and a score of 76 can someone tell me exactly what price Simpson will be next week? I believe he will be roughly 195k?

I don’t know this years magic number.

2nd of November 2005 Makybe Diva wins three straight Melbourne cups
16th of July 2020 Scott Pendlebury drops a mark!!
I can’t believe this guy isn’t scoring 140 every round he gets 25 quality positions every week and seems to only be scoring in the 90s I don’t understand the scoring these days.

Tearing it up at half time with 52 but didnt see him hardly in the second half and consequently only 10 more points

    1. According to the AFL app Noble spent 91% TOG in the 3rd and 78% TOG in the final quarter.
In the 3rd he had 5 disposals with 4 being HB’s and the 4th he had 0 influence on the game with 0 possessions/tackles etc.
