Game Chat – Sydney v Adelaide

Written by Motts on March 27 2021

Where and when: SCG, 1:45pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: R1 2020: Adelaide 11.5 (71) DEF BY Sydney 11.8 (74)

SYDNEY survived a late Adelaide fightback to secure a thrilling three-point win over the Crows at Adelaide Oval. The Swans held a 20-point lead when best on ground Isaac Heeney booted his fourth goal at the 15-minute mark of the final term before goals to Tom Lynch and Chayce Jones gave the Crows a sniff. Crows forward Taylor Walker then had a long-range shot at goal with less than 20 seconds on the clock to deliver victory in captain Rory Sloane’s 200th game and the first for new coach Matthew Nicks, but pulled his shot wide as the Swans hung on, 11.8 (74) to 11.5 (71). It would take until Round 14 before the Crows finally recorded their first win of the year.

Match Preview: The Crows will be up and about after their unbelievable win against the Cats last week. Sydney in Sydney will be a different proposition again. They too had a stunning win against a much-more-fancied opponent last week and will be a handful again with Budweiser returning.

Motts Watch:

Sydney
I’ll be watching the kids again: Gulden, McDonald and Cambell. Playing all three again this week and if I can get the same output I got last week, I’ll be absolutely rapt.

Adelaide
Can Rowe put up another ton when playing away? I don’t want to put any pressure on the boy but I’m bloody hoping so! Will also be keeping an eye on Laird. I want him at every centre bounce!

  1. Swans and Crows were both expected to be cellar dwellers by many. Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I see Sydney far further along their list rejuvenation than clubs like Adelaide, Hawthorn and North.

They are full of promising young talent. Not a finals contender this year but not looking too far away from making another charge up the ladder.

    My tips?
Swans by 25. 3 Goals to McDonald, and another big game from Gulden.

  2. No changes

Matthew Ling (Sydney) and Chayce Jones (Adelaide) are the medical subs.

    Matthew Ling $163k DEF

  3. I’m wondering if Dawson begins stealing points again from Lloyd as happened in 2019??

Anyone in the know any thoughts on this? Has Dawson largely gone back to a more defensive role again this year with the new Sydney young ones? … thus not as required up the ground as much?

    1. Seeing Campbell getting a couple rebound 50’s in the first 10 minutes and then Dawson with the first kick in.
Lloyd’s disposals has been just off a stoppage. No chipping around back so far

    2. Can also say Lloyd being favoured considered he was caught holding the ball and that conceded a goal yet didn’t cop any real penalty for it

    1. Looking at his stats, he has been given 2 clangers for 1 kick 1 tackle and 1 mark. No free kicks against though. Don’t understand where a 2nd clanger has come from

  4. Qtr time and Sydney’s top 4 scorers are Campbell, Lloyd, Gulden and McDonald. All 30
Shows these rookies seem to be must haves if they can keep this up

  5. Can anyone let me know where Mills is playing. Is he on the ball or has horse put him in a set position?

    1. he’s in the middle, though hanging outside of the contested packs / melees – so not getting any contested possies and looking for the ball …

  6. Should have put my captain on Gulden he’s going off.

Only sad point right now is Rowe on the field with -2

    1. I can beat that for a sad point HH – I have Rowe on the field AND I took Dow in my starting team which meant I didn’t take Campbell!! *sad face*

      1. I did take Dow in starting lineup but in place of Scott or Powell which I thought was reasonable.

  8. Gulden leading disposal getter equal with Campbell both with 17. 15 Kicks for Campbell.
Lloyd 14 disposals only 3 CP

Berry has had 3 shots at goal, all behinds
Laird 2nd least amount of TOG at 68% :/

    1. The way it seems, Campbell is almost taking over Lloyd and being the weapon. Lloyd only with ~70 meters gained to Campbells 400

  9. Nice to have Bud back.

So much riding on this one with half my SC team playing.

    Gulden 91 🙂
    Campbell 76
    Heeney 61
    Mills 44
    Warner 41

    Berry 47
    Laird 37
    Rowe -3 🙁

Rowell went out for Heeney in the end.
I saw my forward line as my weakest link and with The Swans looking much better this year, I thought he was worth the risk.
He looks to be well under priced, and I banked cash for an early upgrade.

How good are the rookies going, bodes well for a good second half.

Go Mills and go the Swans !

    1. Decided the same. Heeney just getting the nod over Cerra.

Now, how do I find a way to bring Logan McDonald in?

  10. Lloyd being gifted his disposals due to the Crows inaccuracy. Dawson has taken a fair few of them however, which has held him back slightly

      1. Gulden for vc next week perhaps?

Maybe not, but probably Round 4 against Essendon on the Thursday night.

  11. Reality is Adelaide are ahead on scoring shots and it is a walkover.

Swans too quick and classy. Totally new game plan based on a lot of young talent. The old slow warhorse midfield is a thing of the past.

They’re playing exciting footy that is a delight.

    1. Looking like the best 2 matches from debut in AFL Supercoach history. 139 and currently showing 138…

  12. Nice, even if the Adelaide flurry at the end was disappointing.
    Rough scores:
    Gulden 136
    Lloyd 124
    Campbell 118
    Heeney 101
    Warner 94
    and
    Laird 121
    Rowe 18
on the field for me. Only one of those hurts.

Just need a decent score from captain Gawn and I might make up something from Rowell’s injury last week.

  13. Errol Gulden BE – 207
    Could smash Michael Barlow’s record 119.9k set 2010 .
Just needs a score over 60s
