Game Chat – Western Bulldogs v Carlton

Written by Father Dougal on May 9 2021

Where and When: 3:20pm today at Marvel Stadium

What it means for the Bulldogs: Staying in second on the Ladder. Hopes of catching the Demons. Not losing two i a row. Beating a team they really ought to beat

What it means for the Blues:   Winning means they are 4-4. That’s a chance to make finals. Also, beating the Dogs would be a huge moral boost. Losing to the Dogs, well, mostly means try again next week, and 3-5 isn’t a hopeless position.

Supercoach Watch:

Bulldogs: Macrae, The Bont, Scott & McNeil, The Helmet, Bailey Smith, Treloar even.

Blues : Cripps, Walsh, Docherty, Williams, Saad, Parks.

Father Dougal’s Watch: Sweet & Khamis. Two rookies, might be useful and we are soon going to run out of useful.

Father Dougal’s Tip:  Bulldogs at Marvel? After their first loss of the season? Dogs by 20.

  1. All the hype Williams gave at the start of the season, but then misses games and at 1/4 time in the negatives for SC score……
    Many dodged a bullet there

    1. You’d think that years and years of Williams missing due to injury or inconsistent from might have even been a warning.

Docherty, however is on for yet another good score.

Only one of these two players was going to be a bargain.

  2. Supercoach need to change things up and let us put umpires in our teams with the way that they choose who they will and wont pay free kicks to, regardless of whether they are or aren’t actually frees, the umps have more influence on the result than 50% of the players on field do.

I know that the AFL is trying to claw back losses from last year be ensuring specific teams make the finals (the umps coach quit because of it) and that’s OK if they need the money.
Some people are really objecting to it but I reckon if we could select an umpire in our teams the rigged results would be easier to take

    1. No, it’s not ok even if they need the money.

If a club isn’t good enough it shouldn’t count on aid from umpires to make the finals because of it’s fanbase, or it’s donors.

Corruption in sport is NEVER acceptable.

    2. What are you on ? Have you ever umpired a game ? Rigged results…..are you accusing AFL and/or umpires of cheating deliberately ??

      1. Erm, in some cases the answer to that has to be a yes, Wighty.

You can’t with a straight face watch the 2016 finals season and tell me that the umpiring was fair and balanced in GWS versus WB in the elimination final and then in the Sydney versus WB grand final.

Umpiring stats for those games as follows: 23/13 and then 20/8.

43 to 21. and that’s with lots of “even up” at the end in “junk time” when the swans got 3 free kicks. Sydney got just two free kicks paid between quarter time and halfway through the last quarter. After the game was effectively over, then there was some even up.

Even Hanneberry having his legs taken out, doing his medial ligament didn’t get a free kick. How is effectively destroying a player’s career by sliding into his legs and causing serious injury NOT even a free kick?

Free kicks were 9-3 at quarter time, 12-4 at half time, 15-5 at three quarter time and 20-8 at full time.

It was abundantly clear who the AFL wanted to win both games and the umpires did EVERYTHING to achieve that goal. Not just in what they paid, but what they turned a blind eye to.

(By comparison the regular season games were 21/14 WB/GWS and 17/16 WB/GWS respectively)

      2. Umps don’t go out to deliberately cheat
Saying that though , As human beings
Umpires would have most liked & most disliked teams
In those grey area decisions it would be silly to think that the correct grades of umpiring would be applied every time
        Case in point
Razor ray should never umpire Geelong/hawthorn games
As the grey area decisions always seem to go Geelong’s way

  3. Is it me or am I seeing Daniel being played a lot further up the field, almost as a winger/HF???
Has he copped the #FURL this year from Beveridge like Dunkley and others have in previous years?

    1. He’s absolutely being moved around and people were warned a few weeks ago when it was mentioned on here that he was being pushed all the way into the forward 50 at times.

Definitely not in a set-and-forget CHB role anymore.

      1. I started the season with him, but now it appears that he will be traded out to someone like Ridley considering he has dropped a lot. Will have to do it now before Daniel drops a lot in cash

          1. Yep – played down back to finish off the game and was one of our best in the last 1.5 quarters

  4. Hahaha
Check H McKays stats 5 kicks for 4.1 CD say only going at 70% one of those goals must have have been an ineffective kick

  5. Surely Carlton in the near future will run into salary cap trouble.
Paying Williams and McGovern probably over 1.5 million and what they are getting rom them they could get from 2 rookies.
They also need to re-contract Cripps and McKsy who are not going to sign on again cheaply.

    1. No need to sign Cripps he’s finished as a top 50 player. They’ll let Cripps go to get Merrett.

Bombers can’t afford Merrett they have 12 top 10 draft picks to pay

      1. If there’s a more disappointing premium player than Cripps this year…… please let me know.

          1. Martin, ok I put in the same barrel as Cripps, Daniel and Neale not so much and Z Williams not in the same PREMO status of the others. He’s been average tho.

      2. And a brilliantly worked $2million available next year….that’s an extra $200k or so each.

  6. Daniel has made a massive comeback in that last quarter due to him being moved back to his half back spot.
This now brings in the question on whether he is a SC premo or will he cop Fwd role punishment every off week

  7. Zac Williams just looks like he is not going to be a Premo this year, getting 9 disposals and scoring about 25 points. I’d rather take a doughnut from him than a score of 25
