Rate My Initial Team 2018

Written by Schwarzwalder on December 22 2017

After completing the First Glance through the new prices and positions, it only seems right to have a crack at my First Team for 2018.  At this early stage, there isn’t too much commentary necessary.  I haven’t paid too much attention to the Rookies just yet.  The backline is very optimistic, it’s really tempting to stack the midfield and the Rucks are decent value if they can find their old form again.

How does that compare with your initial team?  Don’t be afraid to enter your team into the comments below for some close scrutiny from the SCT Coaches……….

(If you don’t have SC Gold, you can always use our very own SCT Team Picker.  Big props to Huttabito for that one!)

  1. Very risky backline I have gone the more traditional Guns and Rookies as Mid pricers really burned me last year.

R Larid, M Hibberd, K Simpson, C OShea, Murray, LKeeffe
    (I Cumming, K Collins)

Danger, Dusty, TMitch, Fyfe, Cripps, Coniglio, Davies-Uniacke, P.Naish
    (J. Higgis, J Garlett, B.Ainsworth)

    Gawn, NitNat (T ENglish)

    I Heeney, T Green, R Gray, M Lewis, W Rioli, J Houlanhan
    (S. Switkowski, L Ryan)

    1. In a perfect world, those rookies would get up for Rd1 and we’d have a strong basis to work with. Solid line-up!

  2. Feels overly risky considering there are still two rookies on-field in the mids (including one super-expensive second year player). I’m really not confident that any of those defenders will be keepers this year, so you’re potentially looking at needed to trade in 6 premo defenders, definitely 2 mids, minimum 2 forwards.

Does Balic and Graham to genuine rookies allow you to upgrade say Cheney and Sicily?

  3. For what it’s worth, my current set-up is:

DEF: Hibberd, Williams, Lloyd, Brayshaw, Richards, O’Keeffe (Doedee, Murray)
MID: Danger, Titch, Zorko, Crouch, Fyfe, Cripps, LDU, Brodie (Kelly, Worpel, Holman)
    RUC: Gawn, NicNat (English)
FWD: Billings, Curnow, Lobb, Bennell, Higgins, Ahern (Garkett, Ryan)

Hibberd to Laird is a distinct possibility.
Billings for any of Heeney, Gray or Dahlhaus is also on the cards.

Best case scenario is 7 upgrades required (4-6, M7-8, F5-6).
3 question marks up forward, but I feel that’s the line to take a risk this season.

  4. First real draft of the year, rookies obviously subject to change based on the lead up to rd 1.

    DEF: E. Yeo, R. Laird, L. McDonald, N. Coffield, C. O’Shea, L. O’Brien (T. Deodee, S. Murray)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, D. Martin, T. Mitchell, N. Fyfe, P. Cripps, S. Coniglio, L. Davies-Uniacke, H. Wigg [currently looking for replacement after injury] (T. Kelly, J. Worpel, P. Ahern)

    RUCK: M. Gawn, N. Naitanui (N. Balta)

    FWD: I. Heeney, J. Billings, C. Curnow, H. Bennell, H. Balic, J. Higgins ( J. Garlett, L. Keeffe)

Still have $59,700 in the bank.

Any thoughts on what I could improve? Any questionable choices? Let me know!

    1. Whoops! Misread the spreadsheet and turns out I was OVER by 59k! So I replaced Billings with Petracca and now I’ve got 10k in the bank.

  5. Needless to say, all rookies are subject to change, and their overall availability – both at a general and at a positional level – will have a huge impact on the eventual structure of my team. With that out of the way, here’s what I’ve got so far:

    DEF: R. Laird, Z. Williams, K. Simpson, C. O’Shea, T. Doedee, L. Keeffe (S. Murray, A. Johnson)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, D. Martin, D. Zorko, D. Beams, N. Fyfe, P. Cripps, JOM, M. Shaw (N. Freeman, H. Wigg, T. Kelly)

    RUC: M. Gawn, N. Naitanui (T. Olango)

    FWD: C. Curnow, R. Lobb, M. Robinson, H. Bennell, A. Christensen, J. Higgins (P. Ahern, J. Garlett)

    Remaining salary: $30,800

    1. Really like the Williams pick. He averaged 106.75 from 12 games when he amassed 23+ disposals and averaged 110.38 from 8 games when he amassed 4+ marks.

An alternative to selecting JOM could be L Davis-Uniacke/ P Dow which will allow M Robinson to become Heeney/Billings.

        1. Not enough discount and not sure CEY will make best 22. Would have been better for both parties if CEY got a trade.

          Better for us supercoaches too.

  6. Current draft. “Stack the mids(price madness)” I’m calling it. Heavy through the middle with 1 or 2 premo options in the other lines then topped up with midprice players. Players in () are rookie priced and obviously will change with what becomes available at season start.

DEF: Hibberd, Hanley, Brayshaw, Hibberd (Keefe, Goddard, Morgan, Doedee)

MID: Dangerfield, Martin, Mitchell, Fyfe, Cripps, Rockliff, Coniglio (Ahern, Davies-Uniacke, Garlett, Kelly)

    RUC: Ryder, Simpson, English

FWD: Billings, D.Smith, K.Langford, Christensen, Bennell, Balic (Ryan, Rioli)

    Over 70k left

    Anyone care to comment?

    1. Although it’s tempting to stack the midfield mate, I can see a lot of potential problems here. Langford at F3, Keefe and Goddard at D5 and D6, even Simpson at R2 would all have questionable JS. The other problem u may face is not being able to jump on any fallen premiums in the midfield. Interstitial first draft though and like the fact that u r thinking outside the box. Good luck next season mate.

  7. I’ve heard Patrick Cripps is really struggling body wise after shouldering such a big load early in his career and has been advised that playing week in, week out won’t be an option in 2018. Has anyone heard anything similar? Motts any info on Cripps?

  8. Put together a seedy new years day team. $88k remaining.

DEF: 3 premiums here, with Birch as a stepping stone.
Laird, Hibberd, Williams, Birchall, O’Shae, Keeffe (Murray, Johnson)

MID: 6 of what I believe will be top 10 mids. M4 is still a toss up between Zerrett, M. Crouch and Neale.
Danger, Dusty, Kelly, Zerrett, Fyfe, Cripps, Brayshaw, Wigg (Ahern, Freeman, Kelly)

RUC: standard setup here, most likely what 80% of the comp will run with.
    Gawn, NicNat (English)

FWD: the forward line ‘premiums’ are pretty speculative this year, and the only one I’m confident will be a top 6 is Heeney. Lobb should be GWS’ #1 ruck this season, so hopefully will score well enough to hold down F5-6. If Bennell stays fit, he will most likely score well enough to be a keeper. Christensen should be a good stepping stone provided he gets ample mid time.
Heeney, Lobb, Christensen, Bennell, Higgins, Venables (Ryan, Hayes)

    1. Hi Baps,
Like your team .. a couple of things I would think about… one of my “rules” is don’t pick players who were injured in the pre-season, especially those who have had ops.. Heeney should be on a watch till the bye round.
The other is always rank the post Bye rounds from the previous year .. with that in mind … I won’t pick Gawn to start the year .. he is way off the mark … watch him in the pre-season but for me another to target in the Bye rounds..
other than that I’d have LDU in the team and consider Jack Robinson who will more than double his price through the year …

  9. Trying to be a little different and not stack the midfield and rucks…

Backs: Hurley, Laird, M.Hibberd, Hanley, Brayshaw, O’Shea, (Murray, Morgan. )

Midfield: Dusty, Mitchell, Ablett, Fyfe, O’Meara, Rayner, Davies-U, Worpel, (Ahern, Garlett, Holman)

    Rucks: Gawn, Lycett (M.King)

Forwards: Heeney, Walters, Petracca, Lobb, Stringer, English, (L.Ryan, J.Brown)
    Cash Left: $15,200
