  1. Hey everyone. This is the first mock up that I’ve done. I would really appreciate any advice about any missed rookies and my setup.
Def: Sheezel, Holmes, Mills, Travaglia, Allan, Smith (Reid, Leake)

    Rucks: Xerri, TDK (Boyd)
Fwd: JHF, Macrae, Smith, Daniel, Hewett, Kako (Lynch, Davidson)

    • Hey, Matt.

A very nice team. Solid structure. Top line picks all good.

All I can think of is plantar fasciitis (PF) for Daicos and Mills. Daicos had light PF a bit over a month ago but reportedly past it. Mills was mild as of the other day – he’s the bigger watch.

Levi Ashcroft you might end up needing but an easy switch around once we see the proper practice games and then sheets.

Don’t stress! A very good side.

      • I spotted Daicos rubbing his groin a couple of times and stretching it out (coincidentally sounding bad). Hopefully nothing. He did kick a goal from 50 straight after

  5. Going thin in defence because I think the top 10 back there is wide open with plenty of scope for 100k price drops. Ryan, Flanders, Sinclair etc.

Sheezel, Holmes, Short, Mills, Allen, Reid (Whitlock, Busslinger)

Bont, Daicos, Butters, Oliver, Cerra, Peatling, Ashcroft Jnr, Knevitt (Hall, Erasmus, Saad)

    Xerri, English (Boyd)

JHF, Macrae, Smith, Daniel, Kako, Stone (Davidson, Hewett)

    Tsatas

Traditionally gone pure GNR and started slow. This year I’m going to ride Cerra types and see if I can have a hot start before trading my way to a best 23. All thoughts appreciated

    • Big no from me. That abdominal injury the other day, his concussion profile and a major regression in 2024.

I’m probably very biased against him but think it’s either pay up for the big fellas or TDK, Jackson and Meek are all serviceable.

      • I can see the logic in that. However, regression for English was over 1 season. He has historically been a gun. I’m willing to take the punt and avoid an even bigger risk…..TDK, Meek, Jackson et al. Lost cash is a concern, I get that. But chasing to make a change is also a concern. For mine, a much larger concern.

A 20 point regression is just huge and like I said I think the Dogs struggle early.

In full flight, he contends for not just R1 but P1. 1:1 disposals to HOs.

        • Perhaps. It’s also possible that a player just has a shit year. There’s been a lot of narrative around the fact that English struggled with the rule changes, possibly. It’s also possible he just dodnt have a great season. Risk, yes. Upside, yes. Downside, yes. That’s the fun.

    • I’m bit of an English fan, Big C.
Last season he come in well and truly underdone from memory it was concussion issues. So he missed 90% of the pre season so didn’t have the tank & match fitness to match his 2023 heights.. at this point in time I’m backing him in to bounce back. I’m not to concerned about that abdominal injury it was very minor…

I could yet fade him but he’s R2 for me atm.

    • He’s in my side atm Big C. Maybe its because he didn’t burn me last year but to still average 108 in a down year has my attention. I just needed to see him play in both praccys to be on him.

Still fiddling.. not sold on Richards after a calf scare. Could go up to an uber or side swap to rozee. English isn’t locked I really like meek and Cameron if it weren’t for their byes. Also have cerra vs perryman at the minute just have perryman ages because I prefer the midfield rookies onfield over defensive rooks. Love any feedback.

Rozee screams value but I owned him last season and held him all year after starting him.. the scars are still fresh. But huge fan.

        • Yeah wonder that a bit myself. Rozee and Butters have owned CBAs all preseason in match sims etc but what worries me is rozee’s versatility. Bit of a mr fix it if port need and the skipper so probably willing to sacrifice himself a bit more for the good of the team. Love his fixture though, juicey.

Similar to Mills and the planta fasciatis.

  7. V2 – Structure change and plenty of players that have come out/in based on praccy matches, will be keen to watch this weeks offical pre-season games.

    DEF- H.Sheezel, NWM, M.Holmes, H.Perryman, C.Mills, B.Allan (Z.Reid, J.Busslinger)
DEF COMMENTS – I’m just really not sold on any of the defensive rookies apart from Allan. Travaglia doesn’t look best 23 at this stage either, so I’ve decided to run deeper in my defence.
Sheezel hasn’t moved since the day I put him in. NWM, watched him play the the praccy and he was the main man out of that defence, very good user of the footy and kicks over handballs majority of the time! Can definitely take it up a level this year. Holmes has been in the midfield group all pre-season, in my eyes if he stays fit he’s an easy top 6. Perryman playing inside mid for the pies and plenty of CBAs, caught my eye in the praccy and someone at this stage I’m willing to take the punt on. Mills I’m a bit wary of with the recent news of that foot, but unless not named R0 he stays in.

    MID- M.Bontempelli, N.Daicos, A.Brayshaw, C.Oliver, N.O’Driscoll, E.Tsatas, L.Ashcroft, H.Langford (A.Sheldrick, M.Knevitt, E.Hewett)
MID COMMENTS- Bontempelli & Daicos definitely better to start with them than try and get them down the track! Brayshaw is back this year, uninterrupted pre-season, looking the goods in the praccys and I feel as though Serong gets tagged over him! Oliver is a lock. Rookies all subject to change, however unlike the defence, we have a larger crop of solid rookies that should play R1. O’Driscoll played with the “A” team today in Freo’s match sim and by all reports looked very comfortable playing in the middle/wing.

    RUCK- T.Xerri, L.Meek (H.Boyd)
RUCK COMMENTS- No change here, still very bullish on Meek, yes his bye isn’t ideal, but for his price and what I think he can offer, he’s worth it.

    FORWARD – JHF, J.Macrae, B.Smith, C.Daniel, T.Lynch, I.Kako (C.Stone, S.Davidson)
FWD COMMENTS- Pretty cookie cutter. All I need Lynch to do is play a solid 5-6 games to start the year to make some good quick cash. By all reports he’s looking very strong and fit this pre-season.

    FLEX- L.Reidy
COMMENTS- Played with the “A” team today for Freo’s match sim. Was the main ruckman all day and played well by what I’m hearing. While Darcy is out I like him there.

All feedback wanted and welcome!! Thank you!!!

    • I agree that the lack of defensive rookies is a problem and will shape teams this year. I also have Mills at D5, Allen only rookie on field.

Have you thought about Short instead of Perryman, to avoid the early bye?

      • Definitely thought about Short but has burnt me in the past so wanting to see a solid pre-season game this week, have heard he’s the main distributor out of that Richmond defence.

Trent Rivers is another one I’m considering after seeing his role in match simulations and training. Just conscious that Viney and Petracca aren’t back yet.

Plenty to think about for that D4 spot!

    RUCK: Gawn Cameron (Boyd)

FORWARD: JHF Macrae Daniel Garcia Kako Hewett (Stone Davidson)

Gone heavy in backline coz I’m not sure how many good playing rookies we will get to choose from. No Bont which hurts but needed cash elsewhere. Like Cripps draw but can always change. Had Xerri but went with some Collingwood bias with Cameron who had a great year last year and now I don’t see Cox playing that much and Cameron was put in Leadership group which hopefully will boost his scoring a few %. Not running with Bailey Smith which could be disastrous, but fingers crossed.

I think Reid and Allan are locked in, but the rest are slowing falling by the sides.

Add to that how many of the value picks have an early bye, and the defence line becomes where our teams start this year

I think Mills will be ok, I’d be putting him back in

Trainor and Leake are far cries.

Travaglia probs plays but been off a wing not HB. Don’t love that for 170k unless he’s a mercurial, out of the gates Darcy Wilson type.

Gone POD in the backline, not sure why everyone seems to have gone off Ryan and Whitfield – reckon their roles are even stronger this year than last. If SDK takes the primary ruck role at Geelong, then he’ll rival his brother’s numbers at Carlton.
Taken a big risk with the midfield. I’m backing in Rowell, Holmes, Day and Oliver to have big seasons. Rowell has always been hard at the ball, but it looks like Hardwick has encouraged him to get on the outside, go forward and kick goals, ditto for Serong at Freo. Holmes and Day breakout years and Oliver back to his best.
Rucks – Hoping English doesn’t get concussed and bounces back to what his output was a few years ago. Word is that Pittonet is out for the first few rounds of the season for Carlton so TDK will make some hay.
Forwards are same, same but I’m backing in action Jackson to become THE unicorn. No tonsils no worries for the bulked-up ruck/forward/mid!
Freo will play Reidy as the number 1 ruck – they simply cannot afford to play one of the best emerging forwards in Treacy as a second ruck. Reidy, as the flexi, will rack up some nice numbers hitting out to one of the best midfields in the comp.
P.S. not sure if anyone picked up on the Freo vibe… FLAGMANTLE!

      • If all things being equal then Reidy will play the first 6 rounds, at least. They won’t risk Darcy and there’s talk Freo will play him at Peel first before he comes into the side. Murphy played with the ‘A’ team in the recent match sim and talk is he has impressed the coaches – we got him for a steal in the draft, given he was touted to be top five prospect. Unfortunately it looks like Erasmus, Brodie and even Johnson have dropped down the pecking order. Looks like NOD and JOM will share wing/inside mid roles.

Don’t buy into any FWD structure argument either. Jackson’s a terrible F50 target and overhead mark. Very much an in and about player, if anything.

Line through him at R2/F3 if Freo are dumb enough to give Reidy a spin.

          Ugh.

          • Reidy was dominant for Peel in the WAFL grand final and he’s had all preseason to work with the Freo on-ballers.
Jackson has been playing second ruck at the same time. Reports suggest he was playing sick most games last season due to severe tonsillitis, he’s had them removed in the off season, which meant a delayed start to his preseason and he’s bulked up (as instructed by the club). I expect (maybe more hopeful) that he will go nuts this season.

        • Think I will steer clear of both Jackson and Reidy. Hard to select Jackson if Reidy is playing and hard to choose Reidy if Boyd is playing at the Saints (and I would rather have Boyd at Flex and a ruck/fwd at R3 rather than Reidy at R3 or Flex). I also want the option to play Knevitt at Flex which I can’t do with the Boyd/Reidy combo. Really hoping Archer Reid gets games or named Round 1 which would make the decision easy.

That said, one bad game from any of them they become an early upgrade target.

Paying little attention to the rookies at the moment but they are expensive on the bench so hopefully have 1 or 2 downgrade options to start to free up some $.

This is very mid-price/value pick happy but feel confident that I have 4 genuine captain options in Xerri Gawn, Bont and Sheezel.

Rankine, Gawn, Rioli and Short are most likely to be flipped around.

At no stage did he look like the preferred option for distributing out of defence. He might be an example of different coach different role.
If he isn’t the clear #1 option for kick-ins and/or distribution from defence in the game against the suns on friday maybe find a new plan.

  28. Draft #356
Any comments, thoughts, or areas that could be improved would be appreciated.

DEF: Sheezel, Holmes, McKercher, Perryman, Travaglia, Allan (Reid, Leake)
Comments: I think Sheezel is an absolute lock. I really like Holmes last year, and think that he will only get better this year. For McKercher and Perryman – I think that there’s value there and both can increase in value to upgrade if they don’t end up being keepers – originally had Mills, and may look at him when he returns. Rookies are obviously subject to change.

MID: Bont, Serong, Merrett, Oliver, O’Sullivan, Tsatas, Draper, Ashcroft (Langford, Knevitt, Erasmus)
Comments: I did have Butters until the recent news. I am on the fence with Oliver, but given the large ownership makes the decision a bit easier. Rookies are plenty here, and disappointed to hear the news about Smith, and hope that the recovery goes well for him.

    RUCK: Xerri, Meek (Boyd)
Comments: Xerri is a beast, and think he will top the rucks this year. I think Meek can be a Xerri 2.0.

FWD: JHF, Macrae, Smith, Daniel, Lynch, SPP (Kako, Hewett)
Comments: Absolute mid price galore through here. I have been tossing up between starting JHF and Rankine, but landed on JHF who I think has more upside, but both will be top 6 forwards.

    FLEX: Flynn
Comments: If he gets sole ruck, there’s value. But that’s a big if.

It shit me to tears, having these constant pop ups and they appear everywhere. Let me read my stuff without being bombed and falling into the brain numbing majority – oh, they will just get used to it. STOP IT. SCTalk is unique. Keep it that way, it’s a chatting forum first and foremost. If you want to sell cause you see a dollar, not for me anymore. Someone else will fill the void. It’s not quite go woke, go broke, but you are now on the edge men, as they say up north, f$&cking the dog! Think about it. Really boys?

Why don’t you get your marketing geniuses to produce the ultimate AI SCTALK team, it will win on stats, go you, take the $50k and your advertising $$$, you just took all the fun out of it.

    RUC: Xerri, Nank (Boyd)

FWD: JHF, Macrae, Baz, Daniel, Berry, Hewett (Hall, Davidson)

    FLEX: Peatling

Things I like: Mids are obviously stacked, solo rucks in Xerri/Nank should see good scoring potential, higher priced rookie options leave room to move should cheaper/better options come available.

Things I don’t like: Defence rookies. Would love to have only two or even one on field but not much to be done about that until opening round/rd1 teams are announced. Peatling as flex hurts me a little bit but I figure if he can average 90ish and I drop a rookie score each week it’s a win, should make enough for an upgrade to be fairly simple however I would prefer a premo or a high priced mid priced (I.e. Will Day, Will Ashcroft … maybe it’s a Will thing)

As always, thumbs and thoughts will be taken into consideration. Cheers!

  48. With all the mid getting injured. Is it possible to have 2 premo mids, then Oliver and ashcroft with 4 rookies on field.
Then have xerri and tdk as rucks
    Max gawn as flex?

    • I don’t mind the idea, it’s about considering if you are confident that TDK would outscore the likes of Anderson or dawson etc.

      TU: TDK
      TD: 550k around mid

  49. Guys I think we need a new thread, maybe call it ‘must have’ or ‘you must be cooked if you don’t include him’..

The top players in the comp are obvious but what I’m looking for is the one that slips under the radar, the one or two players that linger in the back of the mind but for some reason you still haven’t included him.

I’ll kick it off with this example. I’ve heard a lot of doubt about this little future champ but believe me he’s the real deal. He might not get the CBA minutes he would get elsewhere but he’s that good he’ll leave the selection committee no alternative.

    Levi Ashcroft $185.5k
On ground approx 66% game time vs Crows (fanfooty stats)
    11 k’s 12 hb’s, 2 marks, 2 tackles 339m gained, 6 cont poss, + score involvements.
    SC points 80

p.s. big bro went alright too..

    • Start of season doesn’t matter. Is just an extra player. Will become important as teams get upgraded, I’m thinking Ruck backup for the run home

    • Given RUCs and MIDs tend to be the highest scorers, it won’t matter until your M8 premo is in place. At which point you decide whether you want your M9 or an R3 there. Before then a rookie or a value player with a good ceiling that will give you cash gen would be a good option.

    • I think it depends on whether you playing for overall rank or league premierships. If playing for rank then use it to minimise number of onfield rookie scores, particularly during the early bye rounds. If long term plan is league premierships then it is opportunity to grab an extra rookie for cash gen. That’s just how I look at it.

  52. Playing around with a different structure that takes into account pre season injuries, avoiding early byes, and trying 3 playing rucks at the expenses of a premo defender.

Happy to cop Daicos’ early bye as I think he’s a must start considering Bont’s injury and clouds around Butters.
Thinking that at this stage, 3 premo rucks will eventually score bigger than an extra premo defender (or forward).

Just curious to know your thoughts on this approach.
Best of luck for the start of the season to you all!

    • Compare his potential scoring to similar priced players like Garcia. I think he is good option. It’s just his back issues

    • Fortune might favour the brave. Risk is if he gets injured then there are no similar priced replacement options. Might be better as flex instead of R2.

  55. I’m back and with a brand new and rejuvenated team. Currently pending a few rookies so guys like Allan, Erasmus and Hall could easily make way for a Reidy. Would love to try and get FOS in but not sure if it’ll be possible.
