Reserves Rookie Review – Round 3 2022

Written by Alza on April 6 2022

We had SANFL action this week with the mini Showdown being won by the Crows. Plenty of rookies with decent games should see the decent amount of rookies we already have increase over the next few weeks.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Adelaide 18.15.123 def. Port Adelaide 8.13.61

Ben Davis $204.5k DEF/FWD – 20 disposals (12 kicks), 4 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 74 (74/1)
Patrick Parnell $123.9k DEF – 17 disposals (12 kicks) – 63 (63/1)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF – 17 disposals (9 kicks) and took 4 marks – 49 (49/1)
Jake Soligo $117.3k MID – 21 disposals (14 kicks) and kicked 1.1 – 68 (68/1)
Luke Nankervis $102.4k MID/FWD – 18 disposals (5 kicks), 4 marks, 4 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 69 (69/1)

Verdict: Soligo was very good with 20 touches and a goal, won’t come in this week but he will soon with games like this. Decent games from the rest but don’t see any of them coming into the AFL side without injuries or long term performance.

PORT ADELAIDE
Adelaide 18.15.123 def. Port Adelaide 8.13.61

Josh Sinn $157.8k DEF/MID – 10 disposals (7 kicks), 3 marks and laid 3 tackles – 45 (45/1)
Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 15 disposals (9 kicks), 25 hitouts and had 4 clearances – 76 (76/1)
Jake Pasini $123.9k DEF – 20 disposals (18 kicks), 7 marks and had 10 rebound 50s – 74 (74/1)
Jase Burgoyne $117.3k DEF/MID – 22 disposals (17 kicks), 6 marks, 3 clearances and had 7 rebound 50s – 82 (82/1)

Verdict: Hayes was decent in a good ruck battle just didn’t do his usual work around the ground. Pasini and Burgoyne were among the best having plenty to do down back.

VFL

BRISBANE
Brisbane 25.6.156 def. North Melbourne 7.10.52

Thomas Berry $171.5k FWD – 30 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 2.1, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 4 inside 50s and had 4 fees for – 132 (132/1)

Verdict: Good games by all as they smashed North. Berry was one of the best with 30 touches and 2 goals. Cox, Tunstill and Lohmann had plenty of it up forward and through the middle. Lohmann could be a chance with Big O out this week.

CARLTON
Box Hill 8.11.59 def. by Carlton 16.9.105

Brodie Kemp $156.8k DEF – 18 disposals (9 kicks), 3 marks and laid 4 tackles – 68 (43/2)
Alex Mirkov $123.9k RUC – 7 disposals (2 kicks), 46 hitouts and had 3 clearances – 71 (80/2)
Jesse Motlop $117.3k FWD – 19 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 4.1, 4 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 98 (85/2)

Verdict: Kemp had a good game and will probably play at some stage this year. Mirkov needs an injury or form slump to play but he is performing well in the VFL. Motlop was great kicking 4 goals from his 19 touches.

COLLINGWOOD
Collingwood 15.10.100 def. Geelong 11.12.78

Finlay Macrae $206.8k MID – 23 disposals (12 kicks), 3 marks, 4 tackles, 9 clearances and had 7 inside 50s – 80 (78/2)

Will Kelly $123.9k DEF/FWD – 11 disposals (8 kicks), 4 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 48 (47/2)

Verdict: Macrae led the way in clearances in a nice game in the midfield. He probably won’t have the role or scoring we need from him at his price. Johnson had another great game kicking 4 goals.

ESSENDON
Casey 13.13.91 def. Essendon 13.10.88

Nick Bryan $166.6k RUC – 13 disposals (10 kicks), 5 marks and had 26 hitouts – 79 (66/2)
Ben Hobbs $153.3k MID – 24 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 1.1, 10 marks, 4 tackles, 7 clearances, 5 inside 50s and had 5 frees against – 101 (95/2)
Kaine Baldwin $123.9k FWD – 8 disposals (4 kicks) and kicked 1.1 – 40 (66/2)

Patrick Voss $102.4k DEF/FWD – 16 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.1 and took 7 marks – 72 (57/2)

Verdict: Hobbs was among the best for the Bombers and should come in this week after being close last week. Baldwin unfortunately didn’t back up a good game last week with only 1 goal from 8 touches.

GWS GIANTS
Frankston 4.6.30 def. by GWS 8.9.57

Finn Callaghan $198.3k MID – 20 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 2.0, 6 tackles, 4 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 89 (105/2)

Cooper Hamilton $102.4k MID/FWD – 24 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 5 marks – 89 (61/2)

Verdict: Callaghan was good again through the middle with 20 touches and 2 goals as was Hamilton with 24 touches and a goal. Wehr had another good game down back but will need to keep this form up to force his way in.

GEELONG
Collingwood 15.10.100 def. Geelong 11.12.78

Francis Evans $123.9k FWD – 17 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 5 tackles – 71 (62/2)
Cooper Stephens $123.9k MID – 25 disposals (12 kicks), 7 marks, 5 tackles and had 3 clearances – 96 (81/2)
Nick Stevens $123.9k MID – 24 disposals (19 kicks), 4 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 81 (88/2)

Verdict: It was the Stephens, Stevens combo again this week. Chris Scott spoke about Cooper last week so expect him to debut soon with performances like this.

GOLD COAST
Sydney 15.11.101 def. by Gold Coast 15.13.103

Malcolm Rosas $130.6k FWD – 18 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 4.0, 3 marks, 4 tackles and had 4 frees against – 85 (92/2)
Elijah Hollands $123.9k MID/FWD – 22 disposals (5 kicks), 4 marks and had 4 clearances – 66 (73/2)
Jez McLennan $123.9k DEF – 17 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks and laid 8 tackles – 93 (90/2)
Ned Moyle $123.9k RUC – 19 disposals (13 kicks), 5 marks, 4 tackles, 32 hitouts, 6 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 5 frees for and 4 frees against – 109 (93/2)
James Tsitas $102.4k MID – 25 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 2.1, 3 marks, 9 tackles, 4 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 118 (101/2)

Verdict: Tsitas and Hollands led the way in touches here although it would’ve been better had Hollands kicked more. Tsitas has gone back to back great games and will be in line to debut. Rosas kicked 4 goals in a great game and Moyle was great in the ruck. I would say he is next in line in the ruck.

BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Box Hill 8.11.59 def. by Carlton 16.9.105

Jai Serong $117.3k MID/FWD – 16 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks, 3 tackles and had 7 inside 50s – 78 (74/2)

Kade Chandler $123.9k FWD – 22 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 2.1, 5 marks, 3 tackles and had 4 frees for – 101 (64/2)

Verdict: Chandler bounced back from injury and was one of the best with 22 touches and 2 goals.

NORTH MELBOURNE
Brisbane 25.6.156 def. North Melbourne 7.10.52

Flynn Perez $147k DEF – 21 disposals (15 kicks), 8 marks and had 7 rebound 50s – 90 (80/2)
Charlie Comben $123.9k RUC/FWD – 8 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 4 tackles – 50 (60/2)
Jacob Edwards $123.9k RUC/FWD – 10 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 1.1, 3 marks and had 7 hitouts – 49 (53/2)
Patrick Walker $123.9k DEF/MID – 18 disposals (8 kicks), 4 marks and laid 3 tackles – 68 (55/2)
Miller Bergman $117.3k DEF/MID – 19 disposals (12 kicks) and took 3 marks – 60 (52/2)
Joshua Goater $117.3k MID – 16 disposals (6 kicks) and took 4 marks – 54 (64/2)

Verdict: Plenty to do down back for Perez, Walker, Bergman and Goater. Not sure how likely they are in the near future but I would think they all feature at some stage.

RICHMOND
Sandringham 15.4.94 def. Richmond 5.10.40

Will Martyn $161.1k MID – 19 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 7 marks – 72 (57/2)
Ben Miller $160k DEF – 9 disposals (6 kicks) and took 5 marks – 37 (37/1)
Maurice Rioli $123.9k MID/FWD – 6 disposals (2 kicks) and laid 5 tackles – 34 (66/2)
Samson Ryan $123.9k RUC/FWD – 12 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks, 3 tackles and had 36 hitouts – 93 (83/2)
Tyler Sonsie $117.3k MID – 34 disposals (26 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 tackles, 10 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 8 rebound 50s and had 4 frees for – 135 (105/2)

Verdict: Sonsie had a game high 34 touches in a losing side with 10 clearances with Ryan having a great game in the ruck with 36 hitouts. Not sure Ryan gets a game without injuries but expect some debuts from the Tigers this year. Just be wary as they like to give them a taste in the AFL and then hold them back a touch.

SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)
Sandringham 15.4.94 def. Richmond 5.10.40

Darragh Joyce $206.7k DEF – 20 disposals (18 kicks), 7 marks and had 10 rebound 50s – 84 (84/1)

Marcus Windhager $117.3k MID/FWD – 31 disposals (20 kicks), kicked 2.0, 5 marks and had 11 clearances – 111 92/2)

Verdict: Windhager was BOG with 31 touches, 2 goals and a huge 11 clearances, let’s see him back this up next week. Owens and Joyce also had great games but hard to see them returning straight away after a win in the AFL.

SYDNEY
Sydney 15.11.101 def. by Gold Coast 15.13.103

Lewis Taylor $188.4k MID/FWD – 22 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 1.1, 5 marks, 3 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 86 (129/2)
Angus Sheldrick $130.8k MID – 23 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 tackles and had 5 clearances – 93 (93/1)
Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 18 disposals (13 kicks), 4 marks and had 8 rebound 50s – 66 (79/2)
Matty Roberts $117.3k MID – 31 disposals (16 kicks), 5 tackles, 5 clearances, 4 inside 50s and had 4 rebound 50s – 100 (98/2)

Verdict: Taylor couldn’t back up his amazing game last week although he still performed well. Roberts was everywhere and was among the best, Sheldrick pushed his case with a good game also.

FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
Footscray 10.12.72 def. Northern Bullants 10.10.70

Rhylee West $187.8k FWD – 33 disposals (18 kicks), 11 tackles, 4 clearances, 8 inside 50s and had 4 rebound 50s – 137 (113/2)

Luke Cleary $117.3k DEF – 18 disposals (11 kicks), 6 marks and laid 4 tackles – 82 (66/2)
Robbie McComb $102.4k MID – 0 disposals and 1 tackle – 4 (78/2)

Verdict: West and Butler were among the best finding plenty of the ball as did Khamis down back. Tough midfield to break into so will need to keep this going. McComb was injured very early and didn’t manage a touch.

  1. Amazing work Alza!

Appreciate it all, great way to see if theres a guy in good form that may get that senior callup with a couple of weeks of standout performances, really is invaluable information that can give us the edge with rookie picks.

    Thanks again!

  2. Great stuff as usual, Alza.

Looks like my loop, Ned Long, might be up for a debut. Very nice. 102k, DPP, great loop fixture and would eventually play – that’s why I picked him .

    1. I also picked him for those same reasons, but he has also been my Captain whilst not playing and Macrae scoring well as VC in the early rounds. As my only non playing rookie, I will miss that about him.

    1. Definitely Chillo, he would have to be close. They would’ve picked him as SSP for a reason but easing him in through the VFL after having an injury in pre season. Davies could very well be on the chopping block

  3. I can’t be the only one that immediately scrolls through for the latest Will Gould update.
