Reserves Rookie Review – Round 5 2022

Written by Alza on April 20 2022

The WAFL started this week to give us all 3 reserves leagues for the first time this year. Plenty of players to go through here with opportunities for rookies increasing as the year goes on. Brisbane and Box Hill had a bye in the VFL.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Glenelg 15.12.102 def. Adelaide 13.9.87

Jackson Hately $188.7k MID – 27 disposals (12 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 4 clearances – 84 (87/3)

Jake Soligo $117.3k MID – 14 disposals (9 kicks) – 49 (59/3)

Verdict: Hately continued his good form with a team high 27 touches as well as 4 clearances. Parnell and Worrell were good down back with over 20 touches each.

PORT ADELAIDE
Norwood 11.9.75 def. Port Adelaide 8.11.59

Ollie Lord $123.9k FWD – 14 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks, 8 tackles, 8 hitouts, 4 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 96 (68/3)

Sam Skinner $123.9k DEF/FWD – 12 disposals (9 kicks), 5 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 56 (45/2)
Dylan Williams $123.9k FWD – 13 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 3.3, 7 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 85 (61/3)
Jase Burgoyne $117.3k DEF/MID – 20 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 4 inside 50s and had 4 rebound 50s – 93 (77/3)

Verdict: Lord had a good game up forward and in the ruck with 8 tackles. Pasini was solid down back with 18 touches and 6 marks as was Schofield playing his best game laying 10 tackles to go with 19 touches. Williams kicked a team high 3 goals and Burgoyne led the way in touches in a well rounded game.

VFL

CARLTON
Carlton 11.6.72 def. by Richmond 15.7.97

Jordan Boyd $123.9k DEF – 18 disposals (14 kicks), 3 marks, 4 inside 50s and had 4 frees against – 58 (69/2)
Jack Carroll $123.9k MID – 23 disposals (9 kicks) and had 7 clearances – 61 (61/1)
Alex Mirkov $123.9k RUC – 8 disposals (1 kick) and had 13 hitouts – 35 (63/4)
Jesse Motlop $117.3k FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 4 marks – 42 (71/3)

Verdict: Good game from Boyd returning to the VFL and Carroll playing his first game of the season and having 23 touches. Mirkov had a quiet day sharing ruck duties, probably not relevant when not the solo ruck.

COLLINGWOOD
Collingwood 12.7.79 def. by GWS 14.12.96

Finlay Macrae $206.8k MID – 25 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks, 8 tackles, 4 clearances and had 6 inside 50s – 111 (87/4)
Will Kelly $123.9k DEF/FWD – 9 disposals (5 kicks) and took 4 marks – 39 (43/4)
Liam McMahon $123.9k FWD – 21 disposals (16 kicks), 8 marks and had 9 rebound 50s – 90 (60/4)

Verdict: Macrae had another good game with 25 touches and 8 tackles and would be close to coming in. McMahon played well down back with 21 touches and 8 marks while Kelly is probably not that relevant after multiple games around the 10 touches.

ESSENDON
Port Melbourne 21.10.136 def. Essendon 17.9.111

Nick Bryan $166.6k RUC – 12 disposals (7 kicks), 4 marks, 3 tackles, 44 hitouts, 3 clearances and 5 inside 50s – 91 (83/4)
Kaine Baldwin $123.9k FWD – 12 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 5.1 and took 6 marks – 79 (70/3)
Garrett McDonagh $117.3k DEF – 13 disposals (11 kicks) and had 4 rebound 50s – 41 (59/4)
Tex Wanganeen $102.4k FWD – 13 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 2.3 and laid 4 tackles – 66 (66/1)

Verdict: Bryan was dominant in the ruck against an experienced P. Hunter with 44 hitouts and Baldwin had a great game kicking 5 goals. I think 1 of these 2 will play with the injury to Phillips in the AFL. Wanganeen played his first game in the VFL and kicked 2.3 from his 13 touches.

GWS GIANTS
Collingwood 12.7.79 def. by GWS 14.12.96

Cameron Fleeton $123.9k DEF – 10 disposals (7 kicks), 3 marks and had 5 frees for – 45 (71/4)
Jacob Wehr $123.9k DEF – 15 disposals (11 kicks), 4 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 60 (85/3)
Josh Fahey $117.3k DEF – 21 disposals (18 kicks), 6 marks, 4 tackles, 5 inside 50s and had 10 rebound 50s – 93 (107/2)
Cooper Hamilton $102.4k MID/FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks) and took 5 marks – 53 (66/4)

Verdict: Fahey was great again with 21 touches to go with plenty of work around the ground. Fleeton had a quiet day with only the 10 touches and Wehr was down on his usual output for the year.

GEELONG
Southport 15.13.103 def. Geelong 8.8.56

Francis Evans $123.9k FWD – 21 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 3.1, 5 marks, 3 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 98 (74/3)
Cooper Stephens $123.9k MID – 19 disposals (11 kicks), 6 marks, 7 tackles, 4 clearances and had 5 inside 50s – 96 (87/4)
Nick Stevens $123.9k MID – 18 disposals (13 kicks) and had 6 rebound 50s – 52 (79/4)
Mitchell Knevitt $117.3k MID – 16 disposals (9 kicks) and had 3 clearances – 50 (84/3)

Verdict: Great games by Stephens and Evans with Evans probably best on for Geelong. Stevens and Knevitt were a bit quieter than usual as they didn’t do as much work around the ground.

GOLD COAST
Sandringham 16.13.109 def. Gold Coast 15.11.101

Elijah Hollands $123.9k MID/FWD – 23 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 2.1, 3 marks, 6 clearances and had 8 inside 50s – 84 (80/4)
Jez McLennan $123.9k DEF – 20 disposals (11 kicks), 3 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 64 (80/4)
Ned Moyle $123.9k RUC – 7 disposals (3 kicks), 37 hitouts and had 3 clearances – 55 (78/4)

Verdict: Hollands continues to put his hand up to debut with another 20 touch, multiple goal game. Moyle was great in the ruck with hitouts but didn’t manage to add to this like he normally does. Changes incoming at the Suns but they did have some experienced players play well in the VFL this week like Sharp and Flanders.

CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Casey 13.12.90 def. Coburg 8.7.55

Joel Smith $203.5k DEF – 15 disposals (7 kicks), 3 marks, 5 tackles and had 5 rebound 50s – 64 (64/1)
Toby Bedford $123.9k FWD – 15 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 2.0, 4 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 72 (69/4)
Bailey Laurie $123.9k FWD/MID – 22 disposals (13 kicks) and took 6 marks – 82 (70/4)
Taj Woewodin $117.3k MID – 24 disposals (11 kicks), 5 marks, 5 tackles and had 3 clearances – 86 (67/4)

Verdict: Smith returned from injury with a decent game but likely won’t return for a while now. Laurie played well getting 22 touches as did Woewodin with 24 touches. Don’t see any of the VFL players getting into the AFL side permanently this season unfortunately.

NORTH MELBOURNE
North Melbourne 13.7.85 def. Footscray 10.19.79

Charlie Lazzaro $201.4k FWD/MID – 14 disposals (6 kicks), 5 marks, 6 tackles and had 3 clearances – 74 (74/1)
Charlie Comben $123.9k RUC/FWD – 14 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 4.1, 7 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 90 (70/3)
Matt McGuiness $123.9k DEF/FWD – 28 disposals (24 kicks), 12 marks and had 7 rebound 50s – 117 (81/2)
Miller Bergman $117.3k DEF/MID – 20 disposals (14 kicks), 6 marks and had 5 frees for – 82 (62/3)
Paul Curtis $117.3k FWD – 10 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 4.1, 3 marks, 7 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 93 (69/3)

Verdict: Comben and Curtis had great games each kicking 4 goals in a good win. McGuiness led the way in touches for both sides as well as marks roaming around the back line. Good timing with the injury to Hall but I’m not sure he will be the replacement just yet.

RICHMOND
Carlton 11.6.72 def. by Richmond 15.7.97

Will Martyn $161.1k MID – 24 disposals (17 kicks), 8 marks, 3 tackles and had 6 rebound 50s – 99 (71/4)

Samuel Banks $117.3k DEF – 22 disposals (15 kicks), 9 marks and had 6 rebound 50s – 95 (72/4)
Tyler Sonsie $117.3k MID – 18 disposals (15 kicks), 4 clearances and had 4 inside 50s – 62 (87/4)

Verdict: Martyn had a great game down back with 24 touches and 8 marks as did Banks with 9 marks. Rioli and Sonsie played through the middle and had good games each with 4 clearances.

SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)
Sandringham 16.13.109 def. Gold Coast 15.11.101

Darragh Joyce $206.7k DEF – 7 disposals (4 kicks) – 19 (52/2)
Max Heath $123.9k RUC/FWD – 16 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 3.0, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 28 hitouts and 4 clearances – 116 (77/3)
Mitch Owens $117.3k MID – 26 disposals (12 kicks), 3 marks, 5 clearances and had 6 inside 50s – 83 (82/4)

Verdict: Heath played a great game in the ruck and up forward kicking 3 goals, plenty of tall options currently for the Saints so will struggle to get a game at the moment. Owens continues his good form with 26 touches and 5 clearances.

SYDNEY
Sydney 13.7.85 def. by Northern Bullants 15.14.104

Dylan Stephens $202.3k MID – 21 disposals (14 kicks), 4 marks, 5 tackles, 3 clearances and had 5 inside 50s – 79 (83/2)
Lewis Taylor $188.4k MID/FWD – 26 disposals (22 kicks), 7 marks, 3 tackles, 5 clearances and had 9 inside 50s – 102 (120/3)
Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 25 disposals (23 kicks), 6 marks and had 9 rebound 50s – 103 (85/4)
Matty Roberts $117.3k MID – 12 disposals (8 kicks), 7 marks and laid 3 tackles – 66 (89/4)

Verdict: Stephens had a good game again with 21 touches and 5 tackles but might not have done enough to return. Taylor was great with 26 touches and plenty of work around the ground as did Gould down back with 25 touches and 6 marks.

FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
North Melbourne 13.7.85 def. Footscray 10.19.79

Rhylee West $187.8k FWD – 18 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.2, 4 tackles, 6 clearances and had 4 frees for – 76 (92/4)
Louis Butler $130.6k MID – 25 disposals (20 kicks), 9 marks, 3 tackles and had 7 inside 50s – 108 (104/3)
Buku Khamis $127.4k DEF – 16 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 4.1, 10 marks and had 7 hitouts – 103 (71/4)
Robbie McComb $102.4k MID – 28 disposals (18 kicks), kicked 1.0, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 6 clearances and had 7 inside 50s – 105 (87/3)
Cody Raak $102.4k DEF – 5 disposals (3 kicks) – 14 (60/4)

Verdict: Butler returned to the VFL and was dominant with 25 touches and 9 marks. McComb came back from injury and was also everywhere with 28 touches and 6 clearances. Either one could come in over the coming weeks. Khamis kicked 4 goals in a new role for him up forward and in the ruck. Raak only managed 5 touches and I haven’t seen any news on an injury but it is unlike him so keep an eye out for that.

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
Peel Thunder 17.8.110 def. East Fremantle 11.12.78

Jye Amiss $175.8k FWD – 17 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.2, 5 marks, 3 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 81 (81/1)
Joel Western $123.9k MID – 19 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 5 marks – 78 (78/1)
Karl Worner $102.4k DEF/MID – 31 disposals (22 kicks), kicked 2.1, 10 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 131 (131/1)

Verdict: Amiss and Western both had good games with 5 marks, a goal and just under 20 touches each. Worner had a great game with 31 touches to go with a team high 10 marks and 2 goals.

WEST COAST
Perth 9.8.62 def. West Coast 8.12.60

Brady Hough $147.2k MID – 19 disposals (14 kicks), 9 marks and laid 3 tackles – 92 (92/1)
Callum Jamieson $123.9k RUC – 11 disposals (4 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks and had 7 hitouts – 60 (60/1)

Jack Williams $117.3k RUC/FWD – 7 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 2.2, 4 marks and laid 3 tackles – 56 (56/1)
Luke Strnadica $102.4k RUC – 17 disposals (11 kicks), 3 marks and had 29 hitouts – 81 (81/1)

Verdict: Hough was good here with 19 touches and 9 marks as was Clark returning from injury with 18 touches and a game high 9 tackles. Will be a welcome inclusion to our teams in a few weeks. Strnadica won the ruck battle and managed 17 touches of his own in a great game. Jamieson and Williams aren’t really relevant but have played this year and with the Eagles ruck issues may play again.

  1. If Worner makes a debut after that performance I’m not sure how I’d feel as I had him in as a loophole…
