Burning Question – The AfterFyfe

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 26 2016

The worst suspicions have been confirmed and Nat Fyfe is flying to Melbourne for surgery on his lower leg.  First reports suggest he’ll miss 8-10 weeks of football with some pundits stating his season may even be over.  Even at this early stage of the week, the Burning Question has been: What does The After-Fyfe look like?

Long story short………if you’re one of the 40% of teams that have him, it’s time to trade.  Don’t even entertain the thought of holding.  You simply can’t have $600k+ sitting on the bench for that amount of time.  As Matteo told us in Trade Talk yesterday, Fyfe was selected as a definite Top10 Midfielder.  His replacement should then be a player of similar stature…….no expense spared!!

I don’t need to babble on about the best replacement options for Fyfe.  You already know who they are and what they can do.  With the healthy abundance of Dual Position Players, Fyfe’s replacement could come from anywhere (those that don’t already have Goldy or Big Maxy Gawn perhaps?).  Regardless of whether they’re in your team or not, we’d like to know your top five must-have players at the minute.  That should give us a fair idea of the best replacement options for Nat Fyfe……….

Who are the best replacements for Nat Fyfe? (five choices)

  1. For mine it’s Zorko – having stacked my midfield with premiums, I don’t have many spots to upgrade to premiums and I honestly can’t decide which premium mids i’d really want to trade in at this stage

Priddis, Ward and Hannebery will all be traded in at some stage I reckon, but are either too close to peak price at the moment for my liking, or have a poorer score in their system

Zorko will sit in the mids for now with the plan being to swing him forward permanently in a couple of weeks

  2. I’m thinking Fyfe/Kennedy -> Pendlebury/Selwood will be a popular trade this week for those that have cash in the bank.

I’m wondering whether guys like Sidebottom, Priddis and Hannebery are worth a look though. Are any of you guys passing up Pendles and/or Selwood, or are they must haves?

  3. I am in love with Dan Hannerby at the moment but i already have Tom Mitchell and Luke Parker already in my midfield. Do you think i am able to trade Hannerby in or is too many midfield premiums from the same team and especially with the byes coming up.

    1. I’m in the same boat…i elected to not go with Hannebery because i think its too stacked with the one team, and definitely doesnt help come the bye rounds. I went with Fyfe and Sheridan -> Pendles and Selwood

  4. is dependlebury on his way back to permanant mid, now they had a win or you think he will slide back to that quarterback role??

tu – he will stay in mids now
td – he will go back to quarterback position

  5. I’ll probably reverse this trade later on but an hour ago I traded Fyfe to Zaka which freed up $110k. I then upgraded Weitering to Simpson.

Thumbs up – that’s not a bad trade, Mottsy, I might give it a go myself.
Thumbs down – Motts, you’re high.

    1. If you feel Zaha is a top 8 mid then go for it Motts although if your gonna trade him later on then not worth it

Smurf can easily match Zaha when fit so if freeing up cash is the reason then go balls and all with Murphy

I like Weitering to Simo although your better off using cash to upgrade the forward line as bulk of the scoring is in order Mids, Rucks, forwards and then the bloody backs 🙂

    2. Everyone’s obsessed with chucking all their dollarydoos at a single player just coz they’re a “top 6 greatest of all time-l33t-noscope-cosmos grade premo” and dismisses any other approach.

For what it’s worth, I think you’re doing it right, Motts. Who you bring should balance your team, not just look good on paper. A 650k flavour of the week in your stacked mids won’t mean much when Tommy Ruggles is getting K.O’d in your back 6.

If you use you money wisely and can bring in two solid picks, then why not? There is no one set solution people, back yourself!

      1. You’re right, Gypsy. There is more than one approach. I just wouldn’t recommend another way to be honest. The Fallen Premiums in DEF & FWD can always be picked up quite easily with the rookies that have appreciated in value (one up, one down method).
But the $600k+ MIDs aren’t always within reach. Why then, wouldn’t you replace an injured $600k+ MID with another that is fit and firing? Being without those gun MIDs is a weekly 20-30 point loss. Seems too risky for little reward……..

        1. Like for like is always a sound solution, don’t get me wrong. Just wanted to support the ballsy man who often finds himself taken for a fool, drowned out in a sea of monotony. It’s the bold move that wins the prize!

While I wouldn’t make that particular trade personally, on form there is no reason it can’t succeed!

I definitely respect all strategies put forward as this truly is the greatest guide and community on the net!

  6. Thanks for the mention! I got excited for a minute when I saw Gawn and DPP next to his name! Then I realised you meant via DPP 🙁

    1. It’s great in theory but it’s unlikely as hell you have a fwd ruck dpp to begin with to bring gawn/goldy in via a dpp mid/fwd and a dpp fwd/ruck.

Plenty of good options available anyway.

  7. I’m likely to go Selwood or Pendlebury but have problems with both

Selwood- me being a cats supporter I inclined to not have many cats players in my side& he really hurt my SuperCoach side last year

    Pendlebury- questions over his position

      1. Doesn’t matter Twitch although I see his is scoring range is quite limited season to date , low of 92and a high of 108 good for consistent scoring every week although if he keeps a similar spread you’ll be down on gun mids by seasons end to the tune of 150 to 200 points

  8. Fyfe and Dea out
    Pendles and Dahlhaus in

Think that will be my play his week…Been a poor 2 weeks for me on the weekly scores, need to pick up my game!

  9. I hadn’t thought of it until seeing this article, so will now likely go Fyfe to Gawn for about the same price.

    Was considering Lachie Neale before.

  10. Fyfe for Dangerfield or Pendlebury? Already have selwood, Parker, wines and ablett as my premiums. As I don’t have Goldstein I might have to spend the 20000 to get Danger.
    TU Danger
    TD Pendles

  12. Premium mids are currently: Fyfe, Danger, Priddis, Ward, JPK and Libba if he counts.
I’m not considering Gaz as I don’t think he’ll play out the season.
Really thinking about Hanners, but Parker is a tasty option and he’s 40k cheaper. I’m planning on bringing in both Houli and R. Gray in the next 2 weeks, so upgrade money is needed.

    TU: Hanners
    TD: Parker + $40k

  13. Thumbs up- Out: N Fyfe, M Dea, In: D Byrne-Jones, M Priddis and 186,800 remaining salary.
Thumbs down- Out: N Fyfe, M Dea, In: D Byrne-Jones, M Boyd and 271,800 remaining salary which will be used to upgrade B Kennedy to M Priddis next week. This trade is the only one which keeps Bartel in the midfield.
    Reply/ Comment: Out: N Fyfe, B Kennedy, In: D Byrne-Jones, M Priddis and 165,100 remaining salary

    Viney and Ward/Selwood/Parker/Pendles in

Leaning toward Viney and ward to go against the grain.

  15. Out – Fyfe/Dea
    In – Zorko/Simpson with $97k cash remaining

Idea is to eventually move zorko to FWD when I upgrade more rooks to premo’s that are still currently playing (mills, parish, mccarthy, papley etc etc) and I needed more consistency in my backline.

    TU – good idea
    TD – bad idea
