Game Chat – Essendon v Western Bulldogs

Written by Thommo on August 10 2019

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday, August 10, 7.25pm AEST

What it means for Essendon: After being thrashed at home by Port Adelaide last week, the Bombers need to respond against the Dogs. A win would all but ensure they return to the finals for the first time since 2017, and in the process rule out a challenger.

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: The Bulldogs are on the cusp of the finals, currently a game outside of the top eight. But if Luke Beveridge’s men are any chance to charge into September they need to knock out one of the fellow teams that are battling for seventh or eighth position. The Dogs have won five of their past eight games as they’ve rattled home after a poor start to the season.

The stat: The Dogs have had the wood over the Bombers in recent times, winning their past four match-ups.

The match-up: Dylan Clarke v Marcus Bontempelli or Jack Macrae

Do the Bombers send their tagger to Dogs star Bontempelli or ball-winner Macrae? Bontempelli, who is ranked No.6 in the Official AFL Player Ratings, was best afield last week in his side’s loss to Brisbane, but Macrae was also excellent, picking up 45 disposals. It’s a tough task for Clarke either way but he has taken down some of the competition’s leading midfielders in the second half of the season.

It’s a big week for: Shaun McKernan

The Bombers dearly missed their key forward last week against Port Adelaide after he was a late withdrawal with illness. With McKernan set to return, the Bombers’ structure looks far more settled in attack and it means they won’t have to move Cale Hooker from the backline.

Thommo’s Tip: Bombers by 12 points

  1. Have a 160 pt lead over my opponent but I have had one extra player.. He has gone Cripps to make up the points.
TU: Stick with my gut and go Macrae
TD: Just stick to what my opponent does and match him with Cripps

  2. Still got my VC, was gunna go Macrae.
But thinking Clarke will tag either him or Bont.
So might go Dunkley VC, could go huge if one of the others get tagged and he can run free.
    thoughts?

    TU – Dunkley
    TD – Macrae

    Cheers.

  3. Macrae looks to shake Clarke. He’s on defensively, tackling hard and working super hare in general play. Too quick on the outside. Could go 115.

    1. if the bomber fall into the 8 this year
then they will cop a tough run next year
merrett will be touted as great value @ around 470k
the bombers tougher draw will mean that
he will burn plenty of coaches next year

  6. CD must be holding off. Macrae, Bont and Dunks only getting +1 for plays clearly worth more. Expecting some BIG scaling.

      1. Even that feels thin. I followed the scores in real time saw Bont hard ball get and effective kick for +2, Dunks tackle and hard ball get for +2 and Macra mark and kick +1.

        1. Macca’s mentioned this before as well. CD do +1/+2 in the last quarter and update it at the end.

      1. i have him in my team
scored 52 in the last Q n did bugger all
that’s why i brought him in
it’s that 50 pt dead time @ the end that he puts in
doesn’t change the fact that he had no impact on the game
