Think I’m finally happy and settled. All 4 premo mids should end up as top scorers leaving me to use my trades on players that breakout instead of sideways trading failed breakouts. Sheed’s in there because I love the guy and think he could step up and become a great midfielder, at the very least provide a stepping stone to a breakout player.
Billings is ready to hurt me again but I think he will be at least an F6 by seasons end. Moore is low risk high reward. Even if he doesn’t score well or gets hurt, I would be more than likely using a trade on him anyway. He could end the year on my bench even

      1. Great looking team – two things Gawn and Grundy are starters not trade ins.
I like sheed as well I just think he had a cracking final series, considering the eagles wanted him off the ground prior to him having a shot at goal to win the GF may indicate how much they rate him- I have since removed him from my team.

    1. There are more and better rookies available down back. Pick at least one more and strengthen you RUC and/or FWD lines.

  3. Hey coaches
Looking for some feedback and thoughts on this strategy

Staring with Lycett R2, once Mumford is on the bubble moving Lycett to F5 and bringing Mumford in. Grundy R1

It will allow me select 3, 4 + Libba, 2, 4 line up.

See me through the byes when I trade Mumford to Gawn and give good ruck coverage for injuries.

My thoughts are that It will cost me points in the first 4 rounds not having Gawn but offset a bit by a stronger fwd line.
Then until Round 14 I feel that Mumford/Lycett will generate more points than Gawn/fwd rookie

Having potentially 5 keepers in the forward line early in the season without risk to mids and def.

Would love to get you thoughts on this and if it’s a risk worth taking?

      1. Thanks allsaints
He is a bit of an unknown atm.
Guess my fallback is bringing Gawn in earlier before byes but that will obviously take longer and effect my points theory.
        Appreciate the feedback

  4. First team post for the Preseason, I have 304k left to spend which is too much to leave itb but I’m quite happy with the team. Where can I best use the extra money?

    Simpson, Hurn, Williams,
    Smith, Scrimshaw, Clark
    (Duursma, Hore)

    Cripps, Oliver, Martin, Crouch,
    Libba, Walsh, Butters, Constable
    (Scott, Atkins, Hind)

    Grundy, Gawn (Bines)

    Dangerfield, Heeney, Greene,
    Moore, Setterfield, Drew
    (Parker, Petrucelle)

My thoughts are to upgrade 1 of Smith to Lloyd, Libba to Neale *will need to downgrade Hind to Gibbons* or Moore to Mundy.
    Any thoughts appreciated:)

    1. You might want to review moving Green to F4 and having a current genuine F3, Matt or Brad Crouch?
I like Clark and Grimshaw B5 B6- my concern is there won’t be enough points but with Roberton going down there just isn’t a lot of options.
      Good luck if your leagues

  5. DEF: Simpson, Whitfield, Williams, Smith, Scrimshaw,Clark (Collins, Duursma)

FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Kelly, Moore, Setterfield, Drew. (Balta, Petruccelle)

    17.1k remaining

Simpson didn’t set the world on fire in preseason, but usually waits for the real stuff to get going. With Roberton going down Brodie Smith looks like the next best midpricer option, who will get plenty of the ball and take kickouts.
Was tossing and turning between Libba and Cousins, or Brad Crouch and a rookie, until Adelaide’s second JLT.
With no genuine ruck 3 options I’ve gone for a cheap loophole in Sweet.
With the lack of rookies in the forwardline, Darcy Moore looked really solid for just 100k more.

    Hope I’ve done well

    1. Cripps is set to fall, and should get Matt Crouch instead of Brad, Chris Scott conformed that Jordan Clark would start in the VFL

      3

    2. As a key forward it is going to be hard to find some consistent form from D Moore, unless he is a legitimate threat.
Sweet is a good option but didn’t play all JLT and definitely won’t play for first couple of rounds considering English actually did well
Why have you gone for the other forward rookies, not saying they are bad, just curious.
And which smith in the backline?
How come you couldn’t spare the extra cash for Mitchell?
      Otherwise good premiums all round

      1

    3. Should’ve gone with LIBBA, he is the god of football. and 103804754032175694387 times better than Crouch
Also cousins would’ve been better than some random rookie

      1. I would normally say you are right but this year is different the Crouch brothers are on fire and Adelaide will be the big improves this year. Sloane will cop the tag for sure. Don’t miss the boat on the Crouch brothers.

    4. Only comment would be that Collins ($188k) is too much coin to have sitting on your DEF bench.
Potentially go for Hore from Melbourne ($117k) and bank the $70k. Or you could use the $70k to go from Oliver to Macrae if you wanted.
      Anyway, good luck.

I’ve gone expensive rookies as I think the cheap ones aren’t going to make cash or have good JS. It’s all well and good picking a whole bunch of 117k guys but the game is about cash generation. Macrae and Cripps I see no reason why they can’t back it up (although tempted to go Neale over Cripps). Cogs Dusty Crouch all have a great chance of being Top 10 mids this year. Crisp I really like as a POD, entering prime and extremely durable, av 9/102.1 without Murray last year. Moore’s DPP provides great flexibity in the swing with Burgess

    1. Looks like a nice team! When I look at there’s one main thing I’d consider:

By going deep in the midfield you’ve got some risk in the forward line. That is – if you dropped B Crouch you could make a forward upgrade and avoid having Parker on field. The rookie that you bring on in the midfield (Butters?) is probably a lot stronger than Parker from everything we’ve seen so far.

So on field you’ve got B Crouch (avg 95-100?) and Parker (avg 50 if we’re lucky?)

But you could have Butters (70-80?) and maybe Greene fwd (85-95?), leaving you a bit of extra cash, potentially more points on the field and freeing up a mid-spot for upgrade to an Uber-premium at some stage in the season.

This is the battle I’ve been facing all week because it just feels so good looking at a midfield that bats pretty much 7 deep with Walsh and Libba, but it won’t look as good if we end up with doughnuts at f6…

      Good luck to you!

    1. Dont understanf the thumbs down you got here. Maybe if someone explained their thoughts instead.

Think its a good team. Would probably prefer downgrading one of crouch/libba to get a decent f4 due to rookie uncertainty. This would also put butters on the field, as he is a waste on the bench.

Also maybe some value in choosing a cheaper premium in replace of one of menegola or Dunkley. But if you like them both a lot its no biggie.

      2

      3
      1. Think the thumbs down would be for the amount of players with a question mark over them. Individually, Crisp, Smith, Collins, Brayshaw, Kelly, Crouch, Cousins, Menegola and Dunkley seem fine, but collectively in one team, it’s a lot of risk.

  14. Pretty firm on this and have a burner squad set up in case none of these rooksmen get picked, $13k leftover:

    Laird – Whitfield – Williams
    Collins – Scrimshaw – Duursma
    (Hore – Burgess)

    Macrae – Cripps – Oliver – Neale
    M Crouch – Walsh – Butters – Constable
    (Atkins – Scott – Gibbons)

    Gawn – Grundy
    (Sweet)

    Danger – Heeney – Darling
    Setterfield – Drew – Parker
    (Petruccelle – Balta)

I think that the forward back and mid rookies all suck equally so have decided to spread the load.

I don’t understand why others have gone cold on Collins all of a sudden – Gold Coast are trash and there’s a very real chance he could win their B&F which is equal parts sad and lol. Thompson going down should make him that much safer in the 22 and I don’t know how anyone can go past him.

Similarly, I think I’m missing something on Darling; had his season average tanked by those two injury-ruined games, in amongst what was otherwise a total breakout campaign including an excellent finals series. Plus I mean just LOOK at him he’s a physical marvel who stands up by backflipping.

If/when Marsh gets included at rookie price he’ll come in for (most likely) Balta, swinging Burgess forward and bringing in Jordan Clark.

Trying to decide if it is worth downgrading B Smith to a defensive rookie and upgrading D Moore to a Billings type player to give me a full guns and rookie team and a potential 4 defenders and forwards locked for the season.
I’m hoping a poor game from Zorko, Sloane, Martin, Merrett and/or Brayshaw will drop them below $500k and allow me to upgrade to 2 of them at or before round 6.

Any advice or comments would be great.

      1. Thanks for the advice,
I knew that somewhere would be short due to having a stacked midfield, but I feel like all of the defenders will average very similarly
Williams, Smith, Whitfield, Hurn, Crisp, Simpson, etc
I feel that all will average within 10 points of each other so I wont miss out as much.
Whereas in the midfield someone like B Crouch, Libba, Rockliff or Sheed will all average I reckon 25 or so more points then Walsh

But for what it’s worth I could be completely wrong

I know the mids are stacked high – that is where the points are!

    1. If rookies dry up or get dropped you leave yourself vulnerable. Also not having Grundy could easily turn to regret if he continues last year’s form.

Danger, Heeney, Kelly, Moore, Setterfield, Drew (Petrucelle, Parker)

Think the team is pretty balanced, I could potentially omit Moore, Libba and Smith and grab 2 more rookies and Fyfe, however I feel as if the trio will average 90ish this year which should get them all close to 500k.

    Cognilio or Fyfe? Still unsure…

Bines or Sweet? Who is the better option?

    RUC – Grundy, Goldy (Bines)

FWD – Danger, Heeney, Greene, Setterfield, Burgess, Petrucelle (Parker, Schlensog)

Trying something a bit different. Going with Ryan and Andrews as value “premo” picks in the backline which allows me to go six deep in the mids. I believe Ryan and Andrews are both capable of taking another step in their progression; Andrews seemed to find the ball himself easier while also still doing the one on one work. Luke Ryan for me will be one of the key beneficiaries of the kick in rule and I’m expecting his avg to jump up to a low ton.

    Any feedback is appreciated thanks!

    2

    1
      1. Thanks Allsaints!
I’ve swapped Kelly for Oliver! My thought process on Ryan and Andrews are that Ryan avg 93 last year and Andrews avg 92 without his injury affected games. They are both young and improving (Ryan with the kick ins). So I’m taking a punt on them as I could get in Hurn or Whitfield for another 60k but they avgd 99 and 96 respectively last year which is very marginal compared to Ryan and Andrews who will be young improvers. Thank you for your feedback !!

So, I’ve got a bit of cash still leftover id like to eventually use, whether that is changing rookies or improving lines. My fwd line is quite risky at the moment with dunkley and no heeney, as well as both greene and moore. (Looking for some POD’s where i can). I really like moore and greene as my mid-prices however, with williams of course a lock. Possibily of moving moore down back also.

My main issue probably comes from the midfield, would love to get another player in there. Would love to get Fyfe or Cogs, but that may not be possibly. If you guys have any ideas i could do that, it would be much appreciated. As well as any thoughts.

    Cheers community!

    1. If you want another Cogs you could go Greene to Parker to free up an extra 237k, Collins to Scrimshaw for 38k and Butters to Cogs.
You’d lose a few points on the Greene downgrade but possibility gain some with Scrimshaw, and in increase in 50 or so from Cogs

      0

      1. Yeah I like it, He’s either a keeper or stepping stone to Laird or another premo. I’m not a fan of starting Laird at his price with Smith and Milera having the potential to lower his scoring and the new rules not favouring him as the crows used to play 7 or 8 at the back at bounces virtually always. Don’t trust Lloyd or Sicily to be good at their price either.

I also don’t rate a truly good midpriced keeper outside of Williams so Smith will at least make money if he can’t be kept. I don’t absolutely love all of it as there’s a good chance he just averages 80 and is inconsistent but I feel it’s not a bad risk.

Libba on the other hand is just a stepping stone to Macrae, who I think will get tagged 3-5 times in the first 6 weeks

  29. Howdi all,

My now forever changing side currently

Lloyd, Whitfield, Williams, Scrimshaw, J Clark, Duursma (Burgess, Hore)
Macrae, Cripps, Oliver, B Crouch, Sheed, Walsh, Butters, Constable (Scott, Atkins, Gibbons)
    Grundy, Gawn (Bines)
Dangerfield, Heeney, Kelly, Darling, Setterfield, Drew (Petruccelle, Parker)

Higher risk M4 & M5 with the rest very low risk I think. I can turn Crouch & Sheed into Uber premo’s by ditching either Kelly or Darling but currently I am thinking “what the hell, have a crack son” which no doubt will change next week !!

  31. D: Whitfield, Hurn, Williams, Smith, Scrimshaw, Clark (Hore, Duursma)

M: Cripps, Oliver, Coniglio, M. Crouch, Libba, Walsh, Butters, Constable (Scott, Atkins, Gibbons)

    R: Grawndy (Bines)

F: Danger, Heeney, Kelly, Greene, Setterfield, Parker (Burgess, Drew)

This is the contingency team for if rookies are scarce – the other version involves Libba and Greene moving to premo mid (Yeo I think) and fwd rookie, should one present.

    1. It’s a question whether you want to take a risk. IMO Fyfe is the much better pick but there’s a large injury/suspension scare with him. He was averaging 123 before his injury issues, the man is unstoppable.

      1

      0
      1. I’m going Oliver.

Fyfe is a beast. More so when Sandi is giving him first use, I also wouldn’t underestimate Neale,s ability to free him up in the past.

Sandi won’t play much this year, if at all. Neale is gone and Fyfe is now with a mostly inexperienced midfield.

Oliver has big Max able to give him silver-service.He also has a very good midfield around him to help him out.

No doubt they will both have big years.( 115-120+) I’m just backing Oliver to slightly bigger ( 120+) for longer.( 22 games please)

        2

        0
        1. It’s so overrated using rucks and group around them as a reason to pick a star premium, look at Cripps, Higgins or Ross for example. Fyfe gets his own ball takes contested marks and kicks goals, he’s top two players in the league and his game translates to supercoach. Also to say Sandi being out is a downside is ridiculous as Sandi hasn’t played more than 10 games in the last 3 years and Fyfe has still been dominating. If anything the inclusions of Harmes and Viney will hurt Oliver more than the loss of Neale.

          3

          1. You could be right Henry.

As a Freo fan I want Fyfe to succeed as much as anyone.
I REALLY hope he can play 22 blistering games and win another Brownlow.

As a student of SC I tend to go on the numbers.

            In 2018..

            N Fyfe. 15 games average 113.9

            C Oliver 22 games , average 114.7

Fyfe was huge early with 7 x 120+ scores pre Byes. But then the injury happened 🙁

            Oliver played 22 games.

As a side note. Its hard enough when the captain of the of the football team you love goes down with injury.

When he’s the Captain of your SC team as well, and he’s on 43 .

            Its a fricken disaster!

Good luck to all those that pick him ( Fyfe ) I just can’t do it again. the pain is too real.

            1. Well said, numbers don’t lie. Hopefully for your sake Fyfe and Oliver perform equally well! I’ll be honest though a huge reason I’m putting him in is so I have a reason to watch him! Anyway good luck to both of you for the season hopefully you prosper!

DEF: williams, newman, mcgrath, smith, darcy moore, collins, clark, duursma

MID:danger, cripps, coniglio, m.crouch, brayshaw, liberatore, walsh, butters, setterfield, constable, atkins

    1. If your def mid pricers can get 85+ consistently then you should be okay. Have doubts about mcgrath and newman.
Fwd line will have to change before rd 13 bye as well. Good luck.

    2. I feel the key formula for this year is to pay more for rookies like walsh ,Cousins, moore, cuningham and use some more mid-price options sheeds, b Crouch. B smith ,Williams with the four main mid rookies Butters, Const, Atkins ,Scott. Now what this dose is gives you some big cash left over to make some corrective trades if need be . The big bonus here is if you have selected well and you don’t need to make any corrective trades just watch your team grow with plenty of cash in the bank you will be in a very good position come round 8 to the byes. You still pick the value rookies that you need.what you are doing is utilizing your resources as there is some juicy Mid -Prices this year but you will need big cash left over. Working out my team and projecting a first round score of 2261 now this is scores that are with in reason like sheeds and B Crouch both getting 100 and walsh 80. This leaves me with big cash left over 400.000 and then some I am changing my strategy this year because i really can’t pass up the Mid -Prices on offer this year.

    1. Always love your stuff on Twitter EmprX – and yet I can’t help but think you’ve been sucked in by Sheed. Has ‘broken out’ from JLT and finals – but what on earth changed in his game?

You’re an Eagles man, so maybe you’ll know something I don’t, but he’s never been a distantly good SC player before. What’s your theory?

      3

      1
      1. Far from sucked in, he has been in my team since day 1. He has shown he can find the ball and score well so I’m backing him to go to another level this year, with Yeo potentially taking a backwards step after back to back B&Fs. His JLT just reconfirmed his place in my team.

    1. That is a PREMIUM midfield, and the amount of cash it sucks up shows on the other lines. If rookies hold, that’s the price you pay for dependable high scores, but a bit of the midpricers gamble might be needed come Rd 1 if they don’t hold.

DEF: Lloyd, Whitfield, Williams, Smith, Scrimshaw, Clark (Hore, Burgess)
MID: Cripps, Oliver, Fyfe, Crouch, Walsh, Butters, Constable, Drew (Scott, Atkins, Gibbons)
    RUC: Grundy, Gawn (Bines)
FWD: Danger, Heeney, Kelly, Greene, Moore, Setterfield (Petrucelle, Parker)

    Only 7 rookies on field.
4 of those are in at least their second year on a list.
The other 3 have looked outstanding in JLT.

2 true midpricers (Smith + Moore) plus 2 who are genuine keeper potential (Williams + Greene).

Laird + ???? targets for the backline.
Macrae + Kelly + Neale + ???? targets for the midfield.
Rucks are done, barring injury (downgrade to next best).
Two mystery targets in the forward line, no idea who will stand out.

    1. I like your thinking Blue Balls.

I know its probably the year for Mid rookies but relying on 4 every week is a touch ambitious for my liking.

Walsh is still the only one I see as best 22 and he could be “rested” pre bye as well.

I would feel more comfortable putting Drew at F5/6 and trading Green for a mid priced Mid,( Libba, M Crouch, Rocky If you have the balls.) pushing Walsh back to M6.
I’m just not sure even if Greene stays fit, he will start that strongly anyway. GWS have a very tough draw first up. He has also missed a heap of footy. I’m not expecting him to average much over 80 over the early rounds anyway.

I think for around the same price a Libba , B Crouch are more likely to score well. (90/ 100+) more often.

They may need to be traded later, but so will Toby ( trust me)

You may need downgrade a Fyfe type. to a value mid to afford it.

If you do stick with your current structure ..

I would have a plan if Green breaks down again to turn him into a mid priced M/F that you can swing into the mids as you may need that , with Walsh at M5.

Just my take on it anyway!

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Now watch Greene kill it ,and me scramble to get the cash to bring him in R3 , before he gets suspended for 3 weeks in R5 😉

      1. In principal, I agree with you. Structurally, it ended up that was because I like having a DPP in the midfield, though that’s probably less of a concern at the start of the year, and there should be a few downgrade options that pop up later.

The dollars don’t work for Crouch, but Libba might be workable.

Libba has the runs on the board – just comes down to whether he cares enough to get back to his best. Anyone got any insight into how he’s been travelling this preseason?

    1. Really stretching things to get that DEEP midfield – but as a result you need so much to go right on the other lines to cover it. Could work in some cases, but you’d be a proper gambler with that many midpricers.

    FWD: P. Dangerfield, I. Heeney, T. Kelly, S. Lycett, T. Greene, W. Setterfield (W. Drew, J. Pettruccelle)

    Remaining salary: $19,600.

It’s a well-known fact that most of the rookies are rubbish this year, especially the non-midfield ones. In the spirit of trying to get all the good cows and none of the dodgy ones, I have structured my team accordingly. I was planning to cut the midfield right back to as few as two premiums, completely stacking the other lines, but soon discovered that although there were more and better cows in the midfield than there were in other positions, there probably weren’t enough good ones for me to go all the way with that plan. The only way to achieve that would have been to steal the good dual-position cows from other lines, thus forcing me to select comparatively dodgy ones in their place, the avoidance of which was the object of this exercise to begin with.

So, a couple fewer rookie mids than first hoped. But the cows on other lines were still rubbish. I couldn’t afford to completely stack every other line if I was going to be selecting four premium mids instead of only two. Not unless I wanted to start some highly suspect mid-pricers, many of whom would have likely backfired. I found four backline rookies I was happy with, and three in the forward line. That left me with 9 spots to fill across those two lines, and not enough cash to do it.

Enter the rucks. I suspect a lot of you are going to hate this part of my team, but hear me out. If Mumford hadn’t got himself suspended for two matches, he’d be in a lot more teams. Even with the suspension, I’ve long felt that at his price he offers such good value that if it’s possible to cover him for the first two weeks, he’s worth starting. The money I have saved by taking him over a Gawn or Grundy type has done wonders for the rest of my team. Now all I have to do is cover him… I’m not completely in love with the Lycett selection, but at his price I like him better than Westhoff, and a LOT better than all the other RUC/FWDs on offer. If a viable playing R3 option emerges between now and next Thursday, I’ll definitely look at him, but for now, Lycett is here to stay. Even if I wasn’t starting Mumford, I’d still want ruck cover – do you really want to spend up to 14 percent of your starting cap on Grawndy, only to have to cop a doughnut or trade one of them out if they miss a week? I wouldn’t. In the role he’ll be playing at Port, Lycett should be good for an 80 to 85 average, which isn’t quite premium, but is serviceable enough for the time being. He fills a spot in that line, thus reducing my need for forward rookies, and with four other keepers there, it shouldn’t be too long before he gets pushed on to the bench, anyway.

Obviously, the round 14 bye situation in my backline isn’t great, but there’s not a lot I can do about that – most of the best options share that bye. I’m also a little heavy on round 13 bye players in the forward line, but they’re all dual-position, so that’s much less of an issue.

Let me know what you think.

    3

    2
    1. (I also wrote this late last night)

Of course I’ve only just now remembered that Jordan Clark is a thing. I guess that makes five backline rookies I like. This could potentially free up Duursma to go into the middle, which is good, because I’m not 100 % sold on Hately at his price. Or I suppose I could start an extra midfield premium. Or beef up the rucks. Not to worry, I don’t need to make my mind up right now… having options is good.

      2

      1. The four best mid rookies are Butters,Constable,Atkins,Scott they should all play round one and are the most likely i feel to make you cash.Gibbons is going to play a forward roll it looks like so not a good pick i think.

        0

        0
        1. The thing with GIbbons is that he’s $102K, and has good job security. Even if he scores 40 every week, he’ll still make around $100K by the byes. And if he can average 50, then making $150K will be a piece of cake.

I agree that the forward role isn’t ideal, but all he needs at his price is one good game to send his BE plummeting, and I’ll be able to move him on three weeks later for a big profit.

If you can find me a better option then I’m all ears, but for his price I think he’s a safe pick at M11.

          3

          1. Wait until the carlton mids start getting hurt … Gibbo will be manning the middle by the bye and churning out 80plus scores regularly. He wins the footy thats what he does. I will declare now he will play all season long and have at least 5… 30 possession games.

    1. Reckon both teams are a little mid-heavy, but lack of any trusty back premos lets 2 down, as does the risky choice of Greene as F3 for 1. That’s said, I like both a lot for being more unique than a lot of teams on here.

  42. Jack.

    Having options is good…..

Having a plan is better 🙂

My plan ( If I didn’t go Gawndry) would be at least put Vardy or Lobb at R2.

    Hear me out…

Mummy has barely played a game for 2 years. He is Injury prone, (hammy at xmas) and is no certainty to line up R3.
Best case he stays on the park long enough to be a stepping stone to another ruck. Worst case you start him , he plays R3 and goes down in the first Q on 12 points. ( this could happen). Either way it costs a trade.

At least having two of Lobb/ Vardy/ Lycett. gives you the “option”to asses how Mummy plays ( if he does) and then make a decision as to whether he is worth a punt or not. His price won’t change till R5.

It will also give you time to asses which R/F looks like the best to keep as ruck cover for the year. Eg Ryder goes down and Lycett gets the top job. You get the idea.

I know you don’t want to start Gawndy, but for me starting Mummy is just crazy.

    3

    0
    1. Well, I do already have Lycett in the forward line, so I suppose I could hold off on Mumford until round 5. He (Mumford) does have a soft draw as far as direct opponents go, so if he can stay on the park until the byes, he will be an excellent stepping stone (and his bye is right after that of Gawn and Grundy).

I have played around with versions of my team that have Grawndy, Gawnstein, etc., but the cap space they take up makes what I’m trying to do across the ground very difficult. I know you’re more in favour of set-and-forget options, but we need to consider the big picture, not just one line in isolation.

I suppose I could make something like Gawnstein work if I dropped say, Neale to Liberatore. But he’s had injury problems of his own, so he too could end up going down after one quarter (though admittedly he would be easier to replace than Mumford). I have to go out and run some errands, but I’ll have a think about it while I’m out.

  43. Hi eveyone 🙂

im trying to beat my boyfriend and his mates this year and would like any help with my team that you could give. Appreacite all your responses 🙂

DEF: Simpson, Whitfield, Saad, Smith, Scrimshaw,Clark (Hore, Duursma)

    1. DEF: I don’t think Saad will do much for your team at his price – Zac Williams would be a much better choice.
Brodie Smith is cheap, but be aware that he’s probably only going to average low-to-mid 80s – good for his price, but not a keeper.
If you want to take a punt on a breakout candidate, you could also look into Milera.

MID: Mostly good, but I don’t like the Shiel pick. It’s possible (but far from guaranteed) that he could boost his average at Essendon, but he’s only averaged 100+ once in his career. For slightly more, you could look at Rory Sloane or Zac Merrett.

RUC: The Westhoff pick is interesting. He’s probably overpriced, but he is durable, and gives you the flexibility to eventually move him to the forward line, where he can provide swinging cover. But for basically the same price you could get Goldstein, or, if you really want a RUC/FWD, you could get Lycett for $108K less, who will probably post a similar average to Westhoff (mid-80s).

FWD: Fantasia is a bit different – he is young enough, and has shown enough growth in output year-on-year, that he might end up being a good pick, but that’s far from guaranteed. Often with these speculative picks, it can be better to wait and see how they go once the season starts, and bring them in if their form warrants it. But if you really want to start a breakout candidate, I’d say save your money and get Sam Petrevski-Seton: with another pre-season under his belt, and massively increased midfield minutes, he’s far more likely than not to average at least 90.

With all of that said, here are the changes I would make:

Saad –> Z. Williams: same price, but an extra 20 points per week.
Shiel –> Z. Merrett: an extra $58K, but an extra 15 to 20 points per week.
Westhoff -> T. Goldstein: same price, but an extra 15 to 25 points per week.
Fanasia –> S. Lycett: $11K cheaper, should post about the same average, but gives you swinging ruck cover, which not a lot of teams have this year.

  47. Brodie Smith – So many people have him in their side and while there is no doubt he is underpriced, is he worth the risk ? I don’t see him being a keeper, more as a stepping stone. One year out of eight (2014) he averaged over 90 with recent years (2015-’18) averaging 70s-80s.

We often look back at the end of season and think why did I pick a certain player; will that player be Brodie Smith? Happy to eat my words later on if proven wrong.

Is he a trap Thumbs up?
Happy to have him in my team thumbs down

  49. So lets just say I have had a couple .. Its Friday!

There’s less than a week to go, You have spent the better part of 2 months planning a kick ass G&R team.

    Where are the rookies?

Yes there will be green lights come Wed / Thur /Friday.

But how many are best 22?

How many can we rely on on field, with good JS?

For me right now only 3.

    Collins
    Walsh
    Setterfield.

    Desperate time indeed.

Maybe its year to try something different?

    Whitfield, Hurn, Williams, B.Smith, *Collins.
    Clark/Burgess/ Hore.

Cripps, Oliver, M Couch, Sloane, ROCKY, *Walsh.
    Constable/ Butters/ Drew / Scott/ Atkins.

    Gawn / Lycett…….Pines, (loop)

Danger, Heeney, Darling, Lobb, Moore, *Setterfield.
    Petruccelle,Parker.

    No Grundy! What?

I told you something had to give.

He is my first upgrade target.

One of Lobb, Lycett or even Moore will make way pre Byes. The other/s will stay as ruck cover.

Rocky is the definition of risk v reward.

If he kills it and Grundy starts even a little slow, I will be well in front.

    Tell me I’m Crazy 🙂

    1. I still think the rookies will come. No need to panic until the teams are announced but I’m envisaging there to be enough rookies. Whether they will be at the right price is another question.

      1

      0
      1. The real issue may be js for many rookies this year. Most of us seem to have many of the same rookies. What do we do if they start getting dropped early daws….not too many likely replacements. Holding cash to upgrade a failed rookie or two might be the key.

  51. What are everyone’s thoughts on Brodie Smith?

Billings and Brodie Smith F4 and D4 T/U

    Or

    Fyfe at M5 and a rookie at D4 T/D

Can Billings average 90-100 and Smith 90? This would beat whatever Fyfe and the rookie score combined. And at 90-100 Smith and Billings can stay at F and D6 for the year. Personally I believe Billings will bounce back and breakout averaging 95, while Smith will benefit from the new kick in rule and average late 80s early 90s

  53. Let me know your thoughts

Changed team just a few times lol, probs will by next week.

    S. Hurn, C. Mills, Z. Williams, B. Smith, Scrimshaw, Duursma, R+R

Cripps, Oliver, Cogs, M+B crouch, Rockliff, Walsh, Butters, R+R+R

    Gawn Goldy R

Danger, Heeney, Captain Darling, VandenBurg, Setterfield, Drew, R=R

    Still thing to consider!
What i’ve been reading is that Grundy should drop down in price, if Pruess plays I still have enough cash to swap him with Gawn, and work on Gawn later, just thinking Rockliff will do it this season, has had issues last couple of years, i’m hoping that’s all in the past, if he spuds I have enough to trade to a man on the bubble.

VandenBurg he loves to tackle and thats points to be made, shark move, maybe, maybe not? will see how he goes.

    Cheers SC group

  54. I must add.

I have kept $90k and realise I will need to trade hard early to get the best missed rookie’s and early season Bolter’s/ Keepers.

Believe me I wouldn’t have even considered this team 2 weeks ago.

    1. It’s changed again.

      Jack got me thinking.

Vardy at R2 could give me Rocky at M6.

      With the lack of rookies.

Maybe guys that could make $110K + and score 100+ are the way to go.

Midpriced / (under priced ) Midfielders start too look very attractive.

      B Crouch/ Rocky / Miles / Libba.

    1. Zac.

T Lynch and Balta won’t play in the same side.

Greene and Elliot is a huge risk with there injury history.

I would look at getting in Heeney F2 and Williams D3 and working back from there.

Moore may need to come forward.( I trust a few more defensive Rookies on field)

You may need to loose one of Brayshaw/ JOM or Libba to do it. I just think the midfield rookies are more likely to show up this year.

      Best of luck 🙂

Smith the only mid pricer I’ve considered besides Williams, as I’m going full Guns and Rookies. Only two keepers in defence but my rational is that at F3 and F4 I’m confident Mundy and Dunkley can average 102+, for much better value than any defenders I can see around that mark (Simpson, Whitfield). As well as this, cows are looking much more promising down back than up forward. Would appreciate any thoughts on this, not sure if I’ve got the guts to stick to this structure. 30K in the bank for changing my cows after team lineups are revealed.

  65. Here’s my current team I’m happy with my team structure with only 2 on field rookies in the backs and fwds. Just not sure if I’ve got the right rookies.
I just brought in Oliver for McRae which allowed me to bring in Boak for Greene. I just wasn’t comfortable with Greene giving his history. I really wanted to try and bring in Sheed for Libba as I think Sheed could breakout this year and I’m not sure how Libba will go. But can’t afford that move so think I have to stick with Libba.

  66. I’ve tried to mostly steer clear of mid pricers and injure prone players this year, as i always end the last 4-5 rounds with no trades which drops my rankings significantly

laird, hurn, williams, smith, schrimshaw, durrsma (joyce, hore)

macrae, cripps, neale, cogs, m crouch, butters, setterfield, scott (constable, atkins, gibbons)

    grundy, gawn (sweet)

danger, heeney, darling, drew, balta, petruccelle (burgess, parker)

13 keepers with the possibility of smith being D6, i think all the premo mid selections should finish top 10. darling should increase his average as hes looking likely to become the main man, williams can be a to top 8 defender potential more if he gets rid of his spud scores and strings some consistency together.

  68. Stumbled upon the SCT site a few months ago and it’s been by far the highest quality place online for valuable insights and genuinely good poster contributions. Thanks all!

    RUC: Grundy, Gawn (Bines)

FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Billings, Moore, Setterfield, Drew
    (Petruccelle, Parker)

    A few thoughts:
    – $45k in the bank which I might use to go Scrimshaw/Clark to Collins
    – Premo defenders have too many questions marks. Laird (Smith & Milera), Lloyd (expensive, Mills), Hurn (1st season since 2012 over 90), Sicily (FWD swing, clown).
    – I’m backing Simpson to have another 100+ season. That being said, I might still downgrade him to Harris Andrews and upgrade Sloane or Steele to Neale as I’m keen to start with 3 dead set, durable midfield guns.
    * Billings averaged 93 in 2017 and in the 2nd half of 2018. Backing him to return to mid 90’s based on JLT role and saints commentary (https://www.saints.com.au/news/2019-03-05/billings-tough-new-mantra)

    1. READY-MADE Western Bulldogs draftee Ben Cavarra has suffered an injury setback that will see him miss the start of the season.

Cavarra, 23, was taken as a mature-age product in last year’s NAB AFL Draft but has succumbed to a quad complaint that will sideline him for the next three weeks.

    1. Well balanced side that prioritizes points in the midfield.
I’d just be concerned about job security and durability of your forward line from F3 onward

  89. Hi all,
Would really appreciate it for some tips for my team.

Def – Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Scrimshaw, Clark, Duursma (Burgess, Hore)

Mid – Macrae, Cripps, Oliver, J.Kelly, Coniglio, Liberatore, Walsh, Butters (Scott, Atkins, Gibbons)

    Thank you.

    1. Is Kelly fit? Wouldn’t start him as he’ll likely be cheaper come first/second upgrade. MCrouch or the like would then help you bolster your F3 maybe.
I know a lot of others disagree but I see Laird as an upgrade target rather than a starter. Too many unknowns to have 100% confidence, that’s all. Just means you MIGHT be able to get him cheaper.
      Good luck 😉

        1. Sicily, McGrath, Rockliff, Liberatore, Fisher and Greene.
Have no doubt they could all work out fine but I personally wouldn’t start any, given the respective but differing risks/questions surrounding each.

          1. I agree Greene & Libba are risks both with injuries and Suspension
Rocky had a blinder of a JLT and forgiving last year in a new team was a consistent 100+ at the lions
McGrath and Sicily should both benefit from the new 6-6-6 rule and open up the backline. But i do acknowledge this team could be a top 20% or crash

I realise the extra money and a downgrade of Clarke means I could upgrade Rocky to a $500k+ mid, but I’m bullish on Rocky to return to 108+

    Cheers.

    1. I have had Rocky in and out 5 times!!! Brad Crouch seems like the safer play.
I think Clarke will play but I think it’s a risk not starting with Grundy.

      1. I disagree on B Crouch.
I think he will average low 90s partly because Adelaide have that many 90-100 average candidates (Sloane, M Crouch, Laird, Gibbs, Milera, B Smith), and partly because he has never averaged 100.
Rocky at least has the history, and is a better chance of going 105+ which lets face it, is why we pick a mid range midfielder anyway.
Thanks for the feedback though- very nervous about getting the Grundy/Gawn 50-50 wrong.

    0
    1. Sheed is too awkwardly priced as a mid for me. Chuck that same price down back or up fwd and i’d be keen but in the mids that could lead to either a complicated and difficult to maneuver trade or being stuck with a lesser premium, a top 25 mid rather than a top 10 mid.

    1. I briefly had this structure, which is predominantly to risk break-outs in the midfield to strengthen the forward and back line.

The reason I abandoned it was because it was too “all or nothing” for me. If Libba, Brayshaw and Sheed all average ‘overs’ you’re a chance of the overall prize. If one or two fail you’re in trouble.

It’s not wrong, just one way of approaching a difficult season.

      1. I am taking the chance This year with my partners team My Mid Field is
Neale , i feel will improve as the general in the midfield .

Walsh may as well pin the rising star on him now.

    1. I can only fault the backline as being too reliant on rookies and Newman. Your midfield is super-deep as long as Libba holds up and your forward line looks solid.

If you can somehow get one more premo backman ahead of Newman or lose a rookie on-field, you’re team looks super-balanced. I know that is probably a tough ask given you are likely to be strapped for cash!

    1. It’s easy to get lost while stuffing around with the details. I deleted my team and re-selected it tonight to make sure my core selections were in place.

Looking at your team, you are going very weak in the mids and even stronger than usual in the forward line. It might be worth upgrading a risky selection like O’Meara if possible.

A tip for all Get into a Elite league like one of jocks leagues. copy all the start up teams and look at the trades each team makes. keep an eye on there trades especially the bye rounds copy there teams before the bye rounds again and they do all the home work for you. keep in mind every team is different tho. good luck.
