Rookie Review – Round 6

Written by Alza on April 23 2024

What a mixed round, a lot of carnage starting Thursday night with Sanders being made the sub. But also some great scores from popular rookies keepers? Reid and Roberts. Some handy DPP additions to our rookies just adds some more flexibility to our sides.

The time is up for plenty of our players although it may be best to hold for a few weeks. Players like Sanders and Duursma, if you held them you can continue to and wait for their prices to increase again as some did with McKercher. Plus Sanders new FWD status helps. It is also fine to trade this round, Sanders is close to 300k which is some nice money to use to upgrade.

Garcia, Nyuon and McAuliffe are the best options on the bubble and should be the downgrade targets to go for this week. Some players to keep an eye on for the next couple of weeks depending on what happens regarding their role and if they can make it into the starting 22. Woewodin, Hustwaite and even Clark have lost money due to being used as subs regularly and could become cheap enough to bring in maybe even again in Clark’s case.

Now that the early byes are over we are back to 22 scoring players. Just another thing to think about before trades as we’ll be relying on all of our rookies now.

Players on the bubble are marked with an asterisk*

Colby MCKERCHER (MID)NTH$252,000 (-$30.9k)34 (59)104

The Good: Roberts was excellent after having the week off. 23 touches at 91% with 5 marks, 4 tackles and 5 intercepts. Looking like our last player to upgrade. Answerth had his best game with 24 touches, 12 contested, 5 tackles, 4 clearances and 9 intercepts. Burgoyne has had 2 good games in a row now with 21 touches, 7 marks and 4 tackles.

The Bad: Uwland backed up his best game with his worst. Just 6 touches with 1 kick.

The Good: Sharp recovered from a slow start to finish with 17 touches, 5 marks and a goal. His breakeven is creeping up but he has the potential to reach it as he has shown multiple times.

The Bad: Clark was the sub again and has lost a lot of value now, almost enough to look at trading in. Had a decent 35% game time but just 5 touches and 2 tackles. Hustwaite was also the sub again with 31% TOG he had 4 touches and 2 clearances. Same boat as Clark with a decrease in value and a potential target.

Sweet made his Port debut and played well in 59% game time. He had 5 touches, 3 marks, 6 tackles and 21 hitouts. They were beaten convincingly in the end so likely comes straight back out for Dixon. Conway came back into the side and held his own against Big O before he was subbed out. Ended up with 9 touches, 4 tackles and 41 hitouts. Read played his 3rd game and was subbed out with 4 touches, 2 marks and 6 hitouts.

The Good: Reid had another outstanding game and was maybe even a little unlucky not to win the medal. 19 touches at 84% with 13 contested, 3 marks, 7 clearances and 3.1 saw him close to 150. Riley Garcia had a nice 1st game of the year after some strong VFL games. He had 17 touches with 9 contested and 6 tackles. Role might not be as nice with Libba back but looks like a decent scorer.

The Bad: Sellers played his 2nd game with 2 touches. McInnes was the sub and had 2 touches including a goal in 10% TOG. Sanders caused a stir when he was named as the sub even with Libba missing. He had 5 touches and 2 tackles from 24% TOG. Has a high breakeven now but gained FWD status, good reasoning behind either trading or holding.

Time To Trade: Sanders

  1. I originally traded Draper to Houston, thinking Draper’s BE was much more than just 3, once I saw it here, I reversed the trade and got rid of Pink instead. Slightly less $$$ ITB, but Draper should make some $$$ over the next 2 weeks, so he keeps his guernsey for now

    1. The 21 drops out of his cycle this week to help boost the cash gen. He was just nowhere against McKay and Curnow. Just needs two 50s to make another 40k.
Not like anyone is coming through for defensive rookies to downgrade to either

      1. with so much rookie carnage in Defence through the first few rounds, I’ve still got Z.Reid lol. Had to fix Gibcus, Coffield…someone else, brought in spud Pink and semi-spud Draper, hopefully Reid is almost due to return!

        1. Seems like every week Reid is listed as 2-3 or 3-4 weeks away. I have also held – been tempted to sideways trade for a new rookie, but the best 18 rounds meant it was a bit of a waste and worth holding Reid. But like so many coaches would love to see him back in and generate at least a bit of mid season cash.

          1. I have held too as I thought it would be a month injury then back in a couple once recovered. He’s getting close it just depends on how cautious they are with him although they ware be keen for him to be in the team

            1. Gawn VC, Howes as the emergency means he is useful this week for a look at Howes. Have the eagles RF as another loop if Howes fails.

  2. Holding Z Reid & Pink bites me this week, as I also have Stewart (concussion) and Williams (achilles). Looks like a boost will be required, as not enough cash in the bank to get rid of just Pink & Williams for one premo (even moving Roberts/Graham/N Martin to DEF). Have used 2 boosts so far, 29 trades.

TU : Do 3 trades to get a premo DEF or MID (important this week with Stewart benched)
TD : Do 2 trades – downgrades with Williams & Pink, so cashed up for a premo next week.

    1. I’m in the same boat Brian, even have Young in there but he seems to be okay thankfully. Depending on how many boosts you have used I would use another and get premium in this week. I think I will be using my 3rd boost. Lots of coaches are being aggressive and don’t want to fall behind, with best 22 need as many premiums as possible.

    2. I’m in same situation but have Reid/Howes on bench. If Zilliams out, its an easy double trade to any of six premo mids or defenders. Boost on standby for Stewart as I need a win this week.

  3. Really good observation on trading back in Clark. Hadn’t really considered that. This week’s rookies don’t inspire too much confidence. Nyuon really failed the eye test last week. As did Drury. With their spike score effectively being their first game, we might only get one or two weeks of cash gen. I think I also prefer McAuliffe.

Two that really haven’t hit much attention are Lefau and Tunstill. A nice b/e for Lefau, despite the elevated price. Might get 2 good weeks cash gen from him. Given his rawness, he might just as easily throw a 20, but he did look ok the other week. Tunstill I have no idea. Would be throwing darts, but because I was so turned off by the North boys, anyone would be better.

Like many, I think H Garcia is the best choice to bring in. But if needing a second rookie this week, it does feel like a series of dubious choices. I am feeling like I still need to because next week the choices are even more sparse- R Garcia (hopefully) and then?? Revisiting Clark might end up being our best option.

    1. With the sub rule it has become a real option, would need to see something from him first but at this rate he could be 130k. I didn’t see the game but have heard the same regarding Nyuon, he may stay but if he has another bad game then that could be it.
McAuliffe is a good option, 1 game without the vest he went alright and has good numbers in the VFL and rookie leagues. Should stay in the team with the injuries they have.
Lefau has looked good and can still be a target if needed but he will be a bit inconsistent, like they all are though. I’m not too sure with Tunstill, he is a good scorer in the VFL but doesn’t get the same role with Brisbane’s strong midfield. I am not sure he will be there long term but he possibly could. I think McAuliffe and Garcia are much better options.

      1. I also rated them Hugo Garcia, then McAuliffe – and then went Tunstill ever so slightly over Nyuon.

Nyuon was very ordinary in the first half- as he often got outmarked, & he was also led to the ball so many times.

He has had a lot of goals kicked on him over the past couple of weeks – so surely Clarko puts Comben back in defence (or recalls Pink) in place of Nyuon?

But now McAuliffe has been dropped, and Richmond have a heap more “best team players” (eg Prestia, Short etc) returning over the next few weeks – so don’t think he is playing again any time soon.

I need a double downgrade this week & to use a boost – to hopefully then get Clarry Oliver & Macrae next week (if those two “proven lads” look good this week).

So it might have to be Garcia – & then either Nyuon or Tunstill coming in?

        Slim pickings!!

        T/u Tunstill (21 pts then 61 pts – average 41, BE = – 11)
        T/d Nyuon (89 pts then 46 pts – average 67.5, BE = 64)

    2. Clark is one of my 11 warm mid bodies, so he can stay indefinitely, or until a bubble boy arrives beyond this round.
