Mottsy's Maulers Unveiled

Written by Motts on March 27 2010

I posted my first team to the site about a month ago and received TONS of feedback. I took it on board. I overhauled the boys and then over the course of 30 days finely tuned the final selections right up to the last minute. Sometimes trading blokes in and out again up to 3 times a day. I’m extremely happy with the final product. Here they are:

BACKS – this is where the value players were on offer this year. I’ve grabbed three blokes that were struck down by injury in ’09 and 2 premiums that were valued well under their true worth.

Goddard – first bloke picked, is a gun. DPP.

Enright – justified his inclusion in his first game with 108.

Hodge – will get a lot more time in the midfield this year and is only $485k – one of this year’s must-haves. DPP.

Gram – will also spend a lot more time in the midfield in 2010. Finished off 2009 beautifully in the Grand Final. DPP.

Kennelly – cash cow that scored 91 and 110 in his last 2 NAB Challenge games.

Hunt – cash cow that has performed well in the past. Kicked off the year with a nice 81 against the Dons.

Waters – cash cow. Finished off the NAB Challenge series with 91 & 85. Has been a good performer in the past.

Emergencies: Nason, Silvagni (as with all emergencies, I just picked blokes who were expected to get game time early)

MIDFIELDERS – As I’ve said all along you have to take risks to win at this game and this is the biggest risk I’ve taken in all the years I’ve been playing SuperCoach. 3 rookies in the midfield. My reasoning is this: it enabled me to get Gary, the midfield position was where the quality rookies were playing this year, it enabled me to upgrade almost every other bloke in my team, and the rookies will generate the highest respective value gain leaving me in good stead in a couple of weeks when I want to upgrade them.

Ablett – everyone umm’d and ahh’d over GAJ. And even in the last week with all the publicity surrounding his Gold Coast decision I took him out again but at the end of the day he’s a champion and is able to leave it all off the field. Proved it last night with 129. With those kind of scores he’s not going to drop much in price.

J Selwood – 175 in his last NAB Challenge game?!? Kicked off what should be another belter of a year with a 131 last night.

Gibbs – its not just because I’m a Blues supporter. This kid is SERIOUSLY good and has room for improvement. 112 against Richmond.

Trengove – I’m also a Sturt supporter in the SANFL so took Trengove over Scully. He’ll get games and if he performs anything like he did for the Double Blues he’ll increase in value nicely.

Martin – Another must-have in 2010. Good football brain and will get lots of games. Had a 72 against the Blues.

Barlow – Hard to ignore after a preseason in which he averaged 89. Got named late for the Adelaide game but will definitely play.

Emergencies: Banner, Bastinac

RUCKS – The big decisions were do you grab Hille? And who would be your premium? I’m glad I decided against Hille.

Clark – it was either going to be him or Sandilands. I went with Clark because I loved the footy he played towards the end of last year, his preseason was actually better than Sandi’s (99 vs 94 averages) and because he $40k cheaper.

Naitanui – locked in as soon as he had that 178 in that first NAB Cup game against the Dons (who admittedly didn’t turn up with anyone over 6’2”). I love watching him play football and I want to feel good knowing every tap, every tackle, every mark, every amazing goal he kicks is adding points to my SC team.

Emergencies: Warnock, Lobbe (4th ruck was the toughest decision to make this year. By choosing Lobbe I can sub Tippett in times of need).

FORWARDS – This is where I’ve spent my dough this year. I’m hoping not to have to do too much to this division all year. Big Bad Bustling spent a lot of time in the team after his stellar preseason but in the end his age and lack of games over the last few years forced him out.

Riewoldt – has a couple of niggles which bother me a little but you just can’t fault his drive, stamina, and marking ability.

O’Keefe – yes he’s expensive but you get what you pay for. Had a superb second half of the year in ’09 and in his last NAB Challenge game generated 171. DPP.

Higgins – another proven performer who spends time in the midfield. Just have to hope he plays 22 this year. DPP.

Giansiracusa – at $450k this guy is a bargain. He was having a great 2009 before sidelined with an injury and showed he’d lost nothing when he returned. He’s consistent, moves up the field, and kicks goals.

Tippett – massive unit who’s young, played 22 games last year and will be the Crows focal point up forward in 2010. Had a 149 in a preseason match and handily will also play ruck. DPP.

Waite – I admit Waitey’s a risk. I hated seeing him go down last year both from a SC POV and because I love the way he goes about it for the Blues. You have to admit though, there aren’t many blokes with skills as silky as him. Had a 94 in his last NAB Challenge match which sealed it for me. He justified my faith with an 89 against Richmond on Thursday night. DPP.

Ziebell – Averaged 6 more points per game in the preseason than his main competition, Dangerfield and that’s what got him over the line for me. Being blooded for a midfield role so should get plenty of it. DPP.

Emergencies: Podsiadly, Hitchcock (last minute decision after Rockliff didn’t get named)

After two games I’ve got 847 points from 7 players and yes my captain (which is of course young Gary) has played. I give the team a 10/10. How about you?

  1. Amazingly similair team to mine. I don’t think you have enough bulldogs as they will be point magnets this year. You also didn’t swap out pods, and with the start to the year that geelong has (pretty easy), if he is not in to begin with, he may not be in for 10-12 weeks unless someone goes down. Mooney and Hawkins did well last night too, he may be in strife. I have Pendles instead of Gibbs, and Duffield instead of Hunt, and Jolly instead of Clark. Jolly i think has more upside, he will be in a much better team than he was last year. Great team but I reckon I have you covered. We will see. I am 569/4/Y so far

    1. If Hitchcock plays its not as important for Pods to get a game. He was rock bottom price which got him the guernsey in the end. I didn’t mention it above, but that team gives me $33,500 left in the bank.

  2. Strong lineup Mottsy, but pretty sub-standard everyone has Hunt and Waters in their side, I’m surprised you don’t have Goose on the pine, Nason will be in and out all year long. Mids fine if your happy with 3 rooks starting ( personally I have 2)
Rucks if I had your CASH i would have gone for Jolly this guy can get scores of nearly 200’s, NicNat and Warnock everyone has them Lobbe hasn’t even got a call up but who cares about the 4th. Forwards no real smokies here, you could have had Duncan on the bench instead of IPOD but they might alternate after Duncan’s game last night (piss poor he kicked the ball into kelly his own teammate).
Overall I’ll give you a 8.5/10 you could have been a bit more original.
Best of luck to the Mottsy’s Maulers for the rest of the season.

    1. Originality won’t win competitions for you, PA. Solid players do. Jolly’s preseason form was nothing to write home about which was why he missed out. Made the decision early not to go Goose – he gets injured a lot and when he does score he doesn’t score that much (his 2008 average was 32.75). If that team is an 8.5 I’d like to know what you’d give a 10 to. Presumably your own?

      1. Nah not a 10 there are not many possibilities for that kind of an outcome, but don’t a be a hypocrite cos you gave your team 10/10 and YOU asked us for a opinion on your side, not me. You know how I feel about NAB form.

    2. I’ve tried originality in years gone by, staying away from Cox and going for a roughie as an example. Year in year out i’ve fallen on my arse with this approach … and ended up getting back on board with the backbone players when they cost more and everyone else has appreciated a nice increase in price on getting them early.

  3. hey motts, team looks solid, also similar to mine. I’m in the The League of Extraordinary Coaches too, Ive gone with the 3 rookies in the midfield + scully & bastinac on the bench. GAJ, Selwood and Stanton in the midfield. Gibbs is a gun and will only get better yet i took a punt on stanton instead cause Gibbs can get assigned the tagging roles pulling back on his scores occasionally. It also frees up some cash to choose scullys job security over banner/shuey as a little insurance over the risky 3 starting mid rookies. Ive taken a big punt on Hille, Natinui ruck combo. Like Grant thomas i dont like rucks, prefer the cash in the fwd line where the bigger scores are. If Hille continues around the 53 mark i may be trading him out earlier than i want for Kruez in 3-4 weeks. I’m 840/7/Y

  5. Hey Motts……I’m with you “originality only gets you so far”…….. STUCK my neck out and starting 4 ( FOUR) rooks in mids…….. (most blokes just stopped reading….lol)……., we have 14/22 starting the same Motts….. Mine :
    Godd /Goodwin /Enright /Shaw/Hodge/Kennelly/Hunt ( Waters & Maguire)
    GAJ/Mitchell/Scully/ Trengove/Martin/Barlow ( Lew Jetta & Shuey)
    Nic Nat /Seaby ( Warnock & Lobbe)
    Riewoldt/O’Keefe/Brown/Franklin/Tippett/Hall/Medhurst ( Hitchcock & Peterson)
WASH up – you V me??? : based on 2009 av ( the rest is still all hearsay at present – eg, I trust Barry to play another 5 games at least and think he could have $150 k growth…… if time comes, he’ll get traded..!!..!!)
On average I win backs by 50, you mids by 40 ( giving Scully 68 av..??) you win Rucks by 40, youfwds by 15……… so you win by 45ish….!!! BUT…. thats if we have no injuries……. SAY 1 of our backs goes down next week..you play – whoever – = 40 points, i play waters = 80…..sort of all “tied” up all of a sudden……. and I’m not fossicking for trades……indeed am hoping i will have heaps of trades to upgrade my mids later..??!!??
Lot of variables to having Hunt and Medhurst my “7ths”….yada,yada……
as we ( and 80% of coaches) both have Tren/mart/barlow, I have a LOT resting on young Tom Scully…….. but I reasearched far and wide……. and also figured blokes wiser than me figured his “Skill set” was the best in the Country for his age/group………. only counting on 75ish from him for this to work mathematically…….
Appreciate your comments on my lunacy………

    1. You didn’t mention how much you had left in the bank, PC. Mate I thought 3 rookies was taking a risk. 4 is off the dial. Already Trengove has disappointed, Martin has only just done enough, and Barlow, who knows? Are you happy with Scully’s 66? What’s your progess score?

      0

      0
      1. 2 bob and 6 left in bank Motts…… Martin will be ok….. Barlow looks like being a keeper ( at half time admittedly..!!!), yep..not convinced about Scully and Trengove….BUT i do still think they will improve…….. AIM was to get 220 points from Tren / Martin/Scully…..so they are 40 odd short this week…… if they can get up there, will be trade city around rd 8 for me into mids….. I also had an aim of 150 for my rucks….as it is a weakness…… ( 54 & 56 last year) – ie a combined “upside” of 40 points….not many ruck combos got that…??
My backline ( aimed to be my consistent strength) has killed the PIG – and 8 and 9 have scored solid 74 and 78……so will contribute to the trade table around rd 7 to get some coin in the Bank…….. but we’ve all got a theory……..heh……..
Buddy back next week should help too……..

    1. What was your score last week, Ryan?

Backline – all good. I reckon Hargrave will have a ripper. Raines I’m not so sure about.
Mids – strong, you’d be spewing you didn’t have Barlow though.
Rucks – Ryder did well last year because of the absence of Hille. I reckon he’s a risk.
      Forwards – No problems here.

All up I’d give it an 7.5/10 mate.
