Round Review – Round 2

Written by Motts on June 15 2020

How good is it to have the footy back?!? And guess what else is back? Dane‘s Round Reviews! This is how Mondays should begin!

Collingwood (5.6.36) drew with Richmond (5.6.36)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Collingwood: Phillips (2)

Richmond: Lynch (3)

  1. Taylor Adams (131). The unheralded midfielder from the Pies took out the top Supercoach score due to his 21 touches, 5 tackles and a goal, all from just 73% game time.
  2. Jeremy Howe/Josh Daicos (126). Howe backed up his round 1 score of 156 with another great score roaming across half-back, while son-of-a-gun Daicos had 24 touches at 87% DE.
  3. Brodie Grundy/Scott Pendlebury (115). Pretty typical scores from guys you expect to score well here, although I’m sure many were hoping for a big 130+ from Grundy.
  4. Tom Lynch (113). The big tiger forward kicked 3 of his sides 5 goals to go along with 12 touches, being the only real dangerous forward for the TIgers on the night.
  5. Bachar Houli (111). I’m convinced this guy’s heartbeat doesn’t go above 40 beats per minute, he’s always just so calm on the field. Remember he did miss Round 1 so his price won’t fluctuate yet!

Other notable scores: Blonde hair suits Crisp (108) and Maynard (105), while for the Tigers, Soldo (108), Bolton (104) and Vlastuin (100) hit three figures. Darcy Cameron (73) has 13 touches and 8 marks and would be very stiff to lose his spot to Mason Cox next week.

Disappointment: Going to give it to Marlion Pickett, it’s only his 3rd game but 37 just wasn’t what coaches wanted, especially since he’s on many of our fields.

Geelong (17.6.108) defeated Hawthorn (7.5.47)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Geelong: Miers (3), Dahlhaus, Atkins, Menegola, Stanley, Ablett (2)

Hawthorn: Gunston (2)

  1. Joel Selwood (151). A typical Selwood game really, although they come less often these days. 28 touches (17 contested), along with 8 clearances and a goal helped him register the best score of the match.
  2. Gary Ablett (130). This guy could still go on in 2021, and probably in 2025 with his skills and smarts, he’s that good. 21 touches and 2 goals were his main stats on the night.
  3. Rhys Stanley (122). Stanley was in everything early for the Cats, and finished up with 14 touches, 26 hitouts and 2 goals.
  4. Sam Menegola/Tom Stewart (119). Both players were a driving force in the Cats win, Stewart with 20 touches and 9 marks, while Menegola had 23 touches and 2 goals.
  5. Brandon Parfitt/Mitch Duncan (114). The cornrows worked wonders for Parfitt, who had 11 contested possessions and 10 tackles at the coalface for the Cats, while Duncan’s outside run netted him 20 touches.

Other notable scores: Game 250 for Patrick Dangerfield netted him 101 points from 28 touches, while for the Hawks, Mitchell (95), Sicily (96) and Worpel (91) were the best.

Disappointment: Ceglar (71) was good but had 4 clangers and 69% DE which held back his score.

Brisbane (12.9.81) defeated Fremantle (10.9.69)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Brisbane: Cameron (4), Neale, Zorko (2)

Fremantle: Fyfe (3), Walters, Taberner (2)

  1. Lachie Neale (171). Another ridiculous score from Neale, who in round 1 scored 157. 29 touches (17 contested), along with 2 goals and 96% DE were the reasons behind this score
  2. Michael Walters (148). The small forward split his time between onball and in the forward 50 to finish with 28 touches and 2 goals.
  3. Nat Fyfe (143). 24 touches and 3 goals for the Freo captain, could be in the Brownlow votes once again for this game.
  4. Luke Ryan (123). Roaming across half-back the reliable Dockers defender had 21 touches at 90% DE with a huge 553 metres gained on the day.
  5. Charlie Cameron (118). 4 goals from 14 touches for the livewire forward from Brisbane, could he be a chance for the Coleman medal?

Other notable scores: Robinson (106) and Zorko (107) hit tripe figures for the Lions, while Starcevich (99) will have a nice little price increase. Tom Berry (58) and Hayden Young (41) were both decent on debut, while Sean Darcy finished early with a knee injury.

Disappointment: Nothing really from players with high ownership, but Brayshaw (88) and Birchall (49) were probably expected to score more than their current price suggests.

Carlton (7.11.53) defeated by Melbourne (8.6.54)

Multiple Goal Scorers

Carlton: Zilch

Melbourne: Hunt (3), Neal-Bullen, Petracca (2)

  1. Max Gawn (184). A huge score from the Melbourne big man, who had 34 hitouts, 5 tackles, 21 disposals and 11 contested touches on the day, returning a great captain score.
  2. Marc Pittonet (134). Gawn’s opposing number also had a great game, picking up 14 touches and 23 hitouts, I wonder if he’ll be the Reilly O’Brien of 2020 with Kreuzer down…
  3. Clayton Oliver (127). 28 touches with 5 tackles for Oliver, he’s going to be doing this for the next 10 years so let’s get used to seeing his name come up in these reviews.
  4. Christian Petracca (126). Surely this is a sign he’s about to take over. 24 touches and 6 tackles to go along with 2 goals were his stats on the day.
  5. Patrick Cripps (117). He fits in the same sentence as Oliver, we’ll be seeing his name for another 10 years in terms of Supercoach scores. Was central to the Blues near comeback.

Other notable scores: Sam Petevski-Seton (103) backed up his 113 from round 1, while Marc Murphy (107) also had triple figures. Trent Rivers (62) and Luke Jackson (30) got a win on their debut, while Nic Newmans (8) season is over with a knee injury.

Disappointment: Neither Jack Viney (86) or Sam Docherty (93) backed up their round 1 triple figure scores, although these scores weren’t terrible by any stretch.

Port Adelaide (17.8.110) defeated Adelaide (5.5.35)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Port Adelaide: Duursma, Dixon, Westhoff (3), Motlop (2)

Adelaide: Zilch

  1. Reilly O’Brien (161). This guy is a gun, and was one of only two crows above 80 points. 16 touches, 6 marks, 6 tackles and 27 hitouts meant he took home top score honours even with his side losing by 75 points.
  2. Connor Rozee (145). Whenever Robbie Gray retires, the power pretty much has his duplicate being groomed already. 17 touches (12 contested) and 88% DE to go along with 6 tackles and a goal for the young gun.
  3. Brad Ebert/Todd Marshall (127). Ebert played an all round game with 16 touches and 8 marks, while Marshall played a great game up forward to finish with 2 goals and 11 touches.
  4. Zak Butters (119). Another Power young gun showed the future is bright, Butters finishing with 21 touches, 7 marks, 8 tackles and 1 goal.
  5. Scott Lycett (117). He wasn’t completely embarrassed by O’Brien, having a solid night with 15 touches and 32 hitouts to round out the top 5 scores.

Other notable scores: Travis Boak (112) took home the showdown medal for his 24 touch game, while Steven Motlop (116) put in his claim for mark of the year very early. Duursma (109) and Westhoff (101) both kicked 3 goals, while for the Crows, Matt Crouch scored 94. Injuries ended the nights of Burton, Sloane and Kelly throughout the game, while McHenry (34) and McAsey (52) weren’t the worst Crows on the night.

Disappointment: Dan Houston (60) makes it 2 disappointing scores from 2 games, and after all the pre-season hype, maybe he’s down to his last chance already.

Gold Coast (14.6.90) defeated West Coast (6.10.46)

Multiple Goal Kickers:

Gold Coast: Rowell, Answerth, Day (2)

West Coast: Allen (2)

  1. Matt Rowell (171). A score like this in your second game is unheard off as far as I can remember, and it’s not going to happen again for a long time. 26 touches (15 contested) along with 7 tackles and 2 goals gave him best on ground honours.
  2. Andrew Gaff (137). Running on the outside on picking up 29 touches? Sounds like a typical Gaff game to me, one of the better Eagles on the night.
  3. Sam Day (123). This guy has turned his career around in the last 18 months and had another great game, having 18 touches, 2 goals and 5 marks to go along with some pinch-hitting in the ruck.
  4. Luke Shuey (116). The Eagles skipper had 25 touches and a goal for a great score, although he did have his thigh iced up late in the game.
  5. Elliot Yeo (110). Like Gaff, Yeo had a typical Yeo game. 13 tackles, a ridiculous number even in a full game, along with 21 touches contributed to his score, expect more of the same throughout the season.

Other notable scores: Lachie Weller (100) and Tim Kelly (105) were the only other players to hit the ton in this game, with the rest of the scores being quite spread. Jeremy McGovern also copped a week suspension for anyone who owns him, unless it gets overturned.

Disappointment: Take your pick from popular choices of MacPherson (65), Hurn (73) or Naitanui (85).

GWS (8.12.60) defeated by North Melbourne (12.8.80)

Multiple Goal Kickers

GWS: Perryman, Himmelberg (2)

North Melbourne: Zurhaar (3), Thomas (2)

  1. Todd Goldstein (164). The North big man continued the trend of massive scores for ruckman this week with his game of 19 touches (14 contested), 51 hitouts, 9 clearances, 1 goal, with an incredible 100% game time.
  2. Jared Polec (120). Running off a wing, Polec picked up 23 touches and kicked a goal to net his score, while also having 466 metres gained.
  3. Shaun Higgins (117). The veteran doesn’t seem to have lost a beat, racking up 28 touches throughout the game with almost 400 metres gained.
  4. Cameron Zurhaar (116). 3 goals and 11 touches for the young forward, who got some help from the umpires with 4 free kicks, although he isn’t really Supercoach relevant.
  5. Stephen Coniglio (111). The only Giant in triple figures was Coniglio, who had 19 touches and 10 tackles to lead the Giants midfield.

Other notable scores: A couple of other North youngsters in Simpkin (104) and Dumont (103) played great games, while for the Giants, Whitfield, Haynes and Himmelberg were all in the 90’s.

Disappointment: Toby Greene (47) gets the nod here, who only had 13 touches while opposed to McDonald.

Sydney (11.7.73) defeated by Essendon (12.7.79).

Multiple Goal Kickers

Sydney: Papley (3)

Essendon: McKernan, Stringer (3), McDonald-Tipungwuti (2)

  1. Zach Merrett (159). The Bombers gun midfielder had a day out with 29 touches, 1 goal and 410 metres gained to lead his team and all comers in terms of Supercoach scoring.
  2. Dane Rampe (149). 100% DE for the Swans co-captain, using his 20 touches at 100% DE on the day, while also having over 550 metres gained.
  3. Jake Lloyd (145). 29 touches, 5 tackles and a rare goal for the Sydney ball magnet, returning a great score for his owners after his round 1 disappointment.
  4. Callum Sinclair (144). Playing sole ruck, Sinclair had 13 touches, 4 tackles and 27 hitouts on the day, but this may be a once off with Naismith possibly coming back next week.
  5. Luke Parker (109). 25 touches (13 contested) for the Swans bull, something that his owners can come to expect (hopefully).

Other notable scores: Ollie Florent (100) also hit triple figures for his game that had 635 metres gained! Devon Smith (105) made it back-to-back tons, a great return for a mid-pricer, while Langford (104) and Saad (100) hit the magic figure.

Disappointment: 60 for Isaac Heeney was not at all needed for coaches, maybe Kane Cornes was in his head all day…

St Kilda (14.4.88) defeated Western Bulldogs (7.7.49)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Western Bulldogs: Zilch

St Kilda: Billings (3), Butler, King (2)

  1. Jack Steele (137). At the coalface was Steele for the Saints, racking up 22 touches (10 contested) and a goal to lead all scorers in the game.
  2. Jack Billings (133). An all around game for the former pick 3, who had 3 goals, 24 touches and 5 tackles playing as an outside runner.
  3. Josh Dunkley (131). 28 touches, 8 tackles and a goal for the young bull from Whitten Oval, improving immensely on his round 1 score of 67.
  4. Zak Jones (127). Another great game from the Saints recruit, backing up his 113 from round 1. 29 touches off a wing at 75% DE as well as a goal could see him in the Brownlow Votes.
  5. Bailey Smith (126). The kid is already a star and flies under the radar in the Doggies star-studded midfield. 29 touches and 5 tackles for the day to round out the top 5.

Other notable scores: Another four Saints hit the ton, with Jade Gresham (120) being the best of them, followed by Butler (115), Ross (111) and Clark (105). Uber premiums in Bont and Macrae were in the 90’s, while first-gamer Vandermeer (42) had 10 touches and a goal.

Disappointment: Not many disappointments in this game that have big ownership, but more was expected of the two young ruckman in Marshall (70) and English (68).

  2. Thanks for the write up. Plenty of food for thought in the little blurb on each player.

Has anyone polled 3 brownlow votes in their second game ever?
Rowell will get the three surely.
