SuperCoach Gold 2018 Team Picker

Written by Huttabito on December 7 2017

Who doesn’t love to start planning early?

I personally think it’s never to early, so a quick team I threw together with my morning coffee:

I’m quite liking the stacked midfield again this season. Who are you eyeing off this early?

Don’t have access to SuperCoach Gold? Don’t worry, we at SuperCoachTalk believe no-one should be left out so we have you covered. You will be able to download an excel version of the Team Picker here:

Simple Planner:ย 2018 SuperCoach Team Planner.

Bye Planner:ย 2018 SuperCoach Team Planner (With Byes).

It should be pretty self explanatory, select the player in each position from the drop down selection until you have all 30 players –ย  the price for your player will be automatically filled upon your selection.

If you are using the Bye Planner template, you will be required to enter a the price of each position you would like to have as a season “keeper” as these are the played bar injury, you will definitely be fielding over the byes. The values that I have used are entered as a default.

Please note thatย all players in each position are listed in descending price order and all prices are tentative and subject to change. We will do our best to keep it up to date and make improvements as the season gets closer.

Knock yourself out and let us know in the comments below what you can conjure up.

    1. I believe it’s only for 2017 subscribers only and unfortunately it’s too late to sign up. If I can find an easy way to export all the players, prices and positions I’ll throw it into an excel template.

  2. Yeeeessss!!!

    Version 1 of 3587:

DEF: Yeo, Laird, Mills, O’Shea, Coffield, Keeffe (Murray, Doedee)
MID: Danger, Zorko, Crouch, Fyfe, Cripps, Hanners, Brayshaw (Freo), LDU (Polson, Ahern, Worpel)
    RUC: Gawn, NicNat (Jones)
FWD: Heeney, Gray, C Curnow, C Rioli, Fogarty, Higgins (Venables, Garlett)

    Confident on 12 keepers.

Take a chance on Mills moving into the midfield, Rioli getting close to a full season, and Charlie Curnow breaking out as a versatile mid/fwd.

Plenty of pricy rookies on that list that I should be able to squeeze a few quid pending round 1 selection.

Alternative (slightly risky) option floating around the back of my head is Coffield and Hanners to Angus Brayshaw and O’Meara…

  4. Hey Hutta, would you be able to research for me Dayne Zorko’s average without Tom Rockliff in the side? I believe Zorko will once again be a POD but a bit worried that he will be tagged more often and havr lower scores like his 55 last year (by memory, following a big 160-170). Cheers

    1. It works just fine Matteo. Just click inside the box on the right handside of the select player box to get the arrow for the player drop down list just outside that box.
Then click on the arrow and , just scroll down to go threw the players then just click on the player you want and he will then appear in the box as your selected player. Anyway , i think that is how it worked when i set up a Team last night , but i have 2 years experience from using this format with Dead Team selections.
Just have a play around and you will work it out easy enough.
      Great Job Hutta!

  5. Version 4 already, this stuff’s worse than crack cocaine.

DEF: Yeo, Hibberd, Williams, Brayshaw, Richards, Murray (Keeffe, Doedee)
MID: Danger, Zorko, Crouch, Fyfe, Cripps, Coniglio, LDU, H. Clark (Kelly, Moore, Worpel)
    RUC: Gawn, NicNat (Balta)
FWD: Heeney, Dahl, Curnow, Bennell, Higgins, Ahern (Venables, Garlett)

Feels better now. Strengthened the back line by downgrading Hanners and Rioli to Coniglio and Bennell, which on face value seems similar on risk/reward and scoring potential.

My head tells me I should have more rookies from NM…but I just can’t for the life of me find anyone besides LDU and Ahern that excite me at all.

  6. Aaand we’re back!

I accessed SuperCoach Gold through a program called News Connect this year, where I was given access in exchange for filling out surveys, instead of paying money. Does anyone know if I count as a SuperCoach Gold subscriber for the purposes of this?

Either way, there’s still the Excel version, so in any event it’s not like I’ll be missing out on much, but I just thought I’d ask anyway.

I signed up for SC Gold 4 years ago on a free 3-month trial and it’s been running ever since ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Apart from your rookie players my team literally has almost all of your premiums and mid pricers. I don’t have Yeo, Titch or Setterfield and I have hanners, Curnow and Lobb. That is crazy.

    0

    19
      1. I did. Personally, I think there’s far too much choice in all of this, and, more importantly, far too much inequality. Far too many are left languishing at the bottom of the ladder, while those at the top get all the glory and prize money. Why should somebody’s ranking suffer just because they chose Shaun Higgins over Dangerfield? It is quite simply unjust.

In the interest of fairness and equality, under my government we will nationalise SuperCoach.

        5
              1. Lobb has the highest hit out to advantage rate and centre clearance getter of any of the top 125 ruck attendees, he is their no. 1 ruckman next year and scored 108 and 129 in the two finals as their no.1 ruckman. Curnow averaged 92 from rounds 14-23 and Hanners has 2 previous years of going 114 and 113 and had hip issues for a period of this year, so I’m gambling on a fallen premium. Not sure how any of those can’t be seen as reasonable picks.

                11

                2
                    1. Yeah it’s safer to go a guns and rookies strategy but this frees up my money to get one more expensive rookie outside of Uniacke who I’m very confident will score well and it hopefully means I have to trade up one less player. My experience tells me that going all 123k rookies means more dropped players, bad scoring and inevitably the use of more trades. I misinterpreted that people down voted me because my team was too similar to Huttabitto’s, not really fussed if you disagree with those picks, although they have been well thought out.

                      1

                      1
                    2. I would not worry about dislikes too much as they don’t mean much as everybody has different opinions.
You got yourself a few more dislikes by showing your disapproval of getting them as that is just how it works on the site.

Good you are doing your homework early and Good Luck for the year!

                    3. Don’t care about dislikes, just flippantly responded because I thought it was because my team was similar, which I thought was stupid

                      5
                1. I need to know Hanners is getting pissed every week before I will consider him. We saw how weak he was off the turps.

No place for tea drinking nancy boys in my team.

                  1
              2. Curnow has already broken out: this year, he averaged 93 from round 14 onwards. His scoring in the first half of the season has kept his price relatively low.

All he has to do is continue that form into next year and he’ll be a top forward. Throw in another pre-season, and the prospect of extra midfield time, and who knows what could happen?

                4

                0
                1. Jack IMO an 8 game good average is not a breakout year , but is still in the brreakout contender category as Supercoach is played over the whole Home and Away season.
Don’t get me wrong Curnow might average 95 – 100ppg next year.

                  4

                  1
                2. I wouldn’t say he’s broken out until he plays that way for a full year but that he’s certainly had a mini break-out. He’s definitely worth the gamble because he’s priced 18 points cheaper than what he scored in those final 10 games. There is a solid chance of more midfield time but Carlton’s lack of forwards might keep him at half-forward (where he had those great scores). One scout said in 2015 that he had the highest ceiling of any player in that draft.

                  4

                  1
                    1. I’ll admit he’s one of the most questionable players in my team, as is Hanners, but if I replace them it will be with a Petracca in the forward line, or with a Parker in the midfield. I think all of these are good picks.

                      1

                      1
  8. Your M1 to M6 is lineup identical to mine. The first four being the best midfielders of 2017, and the last two (Fyfe and Cripps) being good value after injury-affected seasons.

    1. Lobb now playing as #1 Ruck looks a bargain forward.

Until I see some form from Bennell he’s gotta be pencilled in at his price. Hard not to consider Christensen too.

Johnson, Murray, Wigg, Freeman, Keeffe, Doedee, Rioli and Garlett will grace a lot of teams, pending preseason form.

  16. Keep an eye on Mitch Robinson’s role during the pre-season. He’s a $406K forward, and the Lions are going to need to replace Rockliff’s presence in the midfield.

    11

    0
        1. He does like to tackle, though. And with the forward stocks being crap again, he only needs to raise his average by around 10 points to be a top forward.

          1

          0
          1. Hey Jack. There has been some talk of ole Beastmode Mathieson pushing for midfield time. Could be a good forward selection too.

            2

            1
            1. He’s a risk, but at $287,000, Tom Bell could be another one worth watching. He’s only had one good fantasy season (2015), but he’s built like a tank, and priced at an average of around 52.

  17. Some stats on rookie availability across different positions:

(Position, Number of rookies, % of positional cohort):

    Less than $130K:

    MID, 60, 22 %
    RUC, 26, 37 %

    1. Has the rookie rule changed for 2018, as in the club doesn’t have to wait for a Long Term Injury before placing them on the main list?

Therefore, all rookies could potentially play any week?

If that’s the case, we could be in for some cows coming through!

      0

      0
  18. And some similar stats on premiums:

(Position, Number of rookies, % of positional cohort):

    Greater than $500K

    DEF, 12, 4.3 %
    MID, 49, 17.6 %
    RUC, 11, 15.7 %
    FWD, 8, 2.5 %

    Greater than $550K:

    DEF, 4, 1.4 %
    MID, 28, 10 %
    RUC, 2, 2.9 %
    FWD, 1, 0.3 %

    Greater than $600K:

  19. If we ignore DPPs for a moment, and if we assume that real-life selections mirror the structure of SuperCoach (6-8-2-6), we can deduce the following about the number of players in each position who will play in a given week:

(Position, Playing players/Total Players, Percentage of positional cohort)

    DEF, 108/277, 39 %
    MID, 144/279, 52 %
    RUC, 36/70, 51 %
    FWD, 108/323, 33 %

If they go for a 6-9-1-6 structure instead, this changes to:

    DEF, 108/277, 39 %
    MID, 162/279, 58 %
    RUC, 18/70, 26 %
    FWD, 108/323, 33 %

    1. I doubt you’ll be the only one, but personally I am inclined towards starting him.

If his average is indeed going to drop, what do you think will cause this, and where will those points go? Remember that the total number of points in a game will always add up to 3300. Let’s look at some possibilities:

#1. Hawthorn is significantly worse in 2018 than 2017. This would likely result in a reduced share of the points at a team level, but this will affect the middle and lower-tiered players more than it will the top end.

#2. His teammates take points off him. Who will do this? JOM?

#3. His role changes. Given Hawthorn’s lack of depth in this area, this won’t happen.

#4. His age catches up with him. At 24, this is a non-issue.

#5. He starts getting regularly tagged. I don’t have data on his average with/without a tagger hanging off him, but there is a .8 correlation between his disposal count and his SuperCoach score, so this could be a risk. His CP % is about 41 %, so increased opposition attention could increase this (and, potentially, his SuperCoach score), but it could definitely reduce his disposal count. His DE of 73 % could also be affected.

Number #5 seems like the biggest risk to Tom Mitchell’s output, but without a list of games in which he was tagged, I can’t say definitively. But what is the chance of this happening? I don’t know. If opposition coaches considered him to be that big of a threat, they probably would have already tried this; the fact that he only averages 8.6 metres gained for every disposal might dissuade some of them. But really, I have no idea.

You could argue that his output is unlikely increase in 2018, and that you therefore might as well treat him as an upgrade target. This reasonable enough. But with the consistency he displayed this year, don’t plan on picking him up cheaply after a bad game.

      11

      1. As well as being strongly correlated with his disposal count, his SuperCoach score is also very sensitive to it:

        Average when disposals = 35: 127 from 15 (High 161, Low 101)

      2. Sorry, the last comment cut off the second half of the stat.

As well as being strongly correlated with his disposal count, his SuperCoach score is also very sensitive to it:

Average when disposals greater than or equal to 35: 127 from 15 (High 161, Low 101)
Average when disposals less than 35: 102 from 7 (High 111, Low 85)

    Please help. Spreadsheets are hard.

    1. Type the name of the player into the box. Be sure to get the spelling right, and to match the case, and to include their other position if they have one (e.g. to add Paul Ahern as a forward, type ‘Paul Ahern (MID)’ into the box. To add him as a midfielder, type ‘Paul Ahern (FWD)’).

Is it too risky to have Birchall, Bennell, NicNat AND Coniglio?

    0

    2
    1. Coniglio isn’t that much of a risk, Nic Nat might have a reduced output because he’s had a whole year off. The main example of this was Roughy last year.

    1. If you think Lycett is going to play, I wouldn’t put in Nic Nat too. He will steal ruck time, which can be terrible. This is primarily evident in Grundy’s output with Cox around

  25. There seems to be so many mid price risk this season more than any other. Deledio, Griffen, Bennell, Armitage, Birchall, Rioli, Oโ€™Meara and so on. Thumbs up if itโ€™s all a trap or thumbs down if there is a real chance to pick up some huge bargains

  26. Some interesting data on Rory Lobb:

Average* when Mumford playing: 69.5 from 16 (High 114, Low 45)
Average* when Mumford not playing: 100.5 from 4 (High 129, Low 64)

    * includes finals

  27. Way too early to get serious but I must admit to having started. Wont post yet as 8 rookies to pick before r1. But, Birchall and J Graham will be first picked…both not much dearer than dearest but untried rookies.

  28. What are peoples thoughts on Deledio, Christensen and Armitage? Seem like good value at their prices but don’t like getting too many mid pricers.

  29. My team currently stacked mid just 5 set and forget. I also like Pendels price but him coming off the half back might hamper his scoring. Ablett is an interesting one but always burns me. I get him he goes shit gets injured, I don’t he goes insane and I have to trade him in. Can’t win. At first I was worried about Ablett hampering Dangerfield’s scoring so thought about not getting Danger, but then I thought back to last year they just chuck him forward and he gets 12 shots at goal a game. I loved the moment when Hodge pushed Danger while in air giving obvious free kick away and ump says to him ‘you can’t do that gotta hit the ball’ and Hodgy says ‘you see how high he jumps?’ and ump just laughs and say ‘good call’

Laird, Hurley, Simpson, Birchall, Oโ€™Shea, Doedee (Keefe, Johnson)

Dangerfield, Dusty, Titchell, Kelly, Fyfe, Armitage, Uniacke, Trengove, (Wigg Kelly, Daniels)

    Gawn, Nic Nat (Cameron)

Heeney, Billings, Cyril, Setterfield, Venables, Ryan, (J Higgins, J Garlett)

    Thoughts?
