Where and when: Flinders University Stadium, Friday 6 March, 4.50pm AEDT
Watchlist:
Jordan BUTTS (ADEL) DEF @ $123,900
Put up a serviceable performance in the last Marsh game doing jobs in defence. Could balance out all the speed in the Crows’ backline and provide us a DEF rookie who isn’t obscenely priced.
Fischer MCASEY (ADEL) DEF @ $184,800
Crows giving their highest draft pick a run. Drafted at #6 as a key defender after rating as the #1 key position player in the NAB U18 Championships. Key defensive role up for grabs, could it be his?
Ben CROCKER (ADEL) FWD @ $152,000
Piqued a lot of people’s interest last game after looking at home up forward. Likely to have better job security than the rest of Adelaide’s rookies, worth considering.
Rory LAIRD (ADEL) DEF @ $525,800
Hard to read last game. On paper Laird’s 49 SC from 41% TOG looked solid. However Gibbs and Milera running off of half back, a slew of defensive rookies and the eventual return of Doedee threatens his monopoly on crumb and intercept possessions.
Connor BUDARICK (GCS) MID/FWD @ $106,900
Looked good in Marsh One, but his score may have been inflated by a cheeky goal and the Cats’ overall lack of trying. Just needs to again look comfortable at AFL level and he can remain in our teams.
Hugh GREENWOOD (GCS) FWD/MID @ $463,100
I’d been deadset against Greenwood for most of pre-season, but my skepticism was shaken after he played pure midfield and led the game for tackles and contested possessions in Marsh One. Looking to see if he can back that performance up today.
Noah ANDERSON (GCS) MID @ $202,800
While Rowell locked himself into our teams in the first 10 minutes, Anderson didn’t look as at home despite the Suns farming points. Hopefully he can underwhelm us again so we can save 200k.
Notable Absentees: Tom DOEDEE (ADEL), Ned MCHENRY (GCS), Izak RANKINE (GCS).

Pretty shocked schoenberg isnt getting a run, elite numbers as a junior and apparently killed the under 23 hit out against port!
Heeney to go 140+ and cause another mass restructure for everyone. But I’m not falling for it.
ROB to go 115+ & finally let me lock him in at R2… could really use the $180k with lack of rookies presenting themselves for R1
If Butts & McCasey both start rd1 which one would make way for Doedee when he returns?
Butts would get the chop. McCasey’s a key defender, he’ll stay if they want to develop him.
Butts won’t play Rd 1. McCasey may but Doedee will come back in the early rounds and more than likely McCasey could make way.
I wish Brodie would learn to kick instead of handball. When he does, he is straight in ..,
Looks like it won’t happen :/
I know they’re all traps but gee whiz some of these Suns look the goods
Why are they traps Chillo??
‘Cause they’ll run out of petrol by R5.
HT SC scores if we trust FF!!

No more Rowell and Anderson for today, they’re saying.
confirmed – pictures of them on sideline already had showers!
Limited Greenwood involvements not great for those looking at him too.
Also, talk that O’Brien will play largely behind the ball with Tex taking rucking duties in the forward half … will be very interesting … and not good if looking at O’Brien …
Sometimes these pre season matches do more harm to us poor SC coaches than good!!
Didn’t catch the first half, but in the 3QT the Suns didn’t seem to be using him [Greenwood] as much and Rowell, Brodie and MacPherson seemed to doing all the CP work. Hmm.
if Greenwood and Rowell can really step up to help … Macpherson has to be on a strong watchlist for a FWD role … probably not starting, but well worth watching …
They have to give Walker time in the ruck else he’d never get a touch.
Sexton looks to have done his hammy …
At the risk of ruining a pod, Smith has been asking in the middle. Role change this year. Need injection of speed and his delivery inside 50 has always been amazing. Lock for mine.
So smith, always felt he was lloyd mid strength, if anyone reckons lloyd is a seagull meet the albatross. However have looked closely at him this year. Giving some serious consideration , has sc scoring potential.
Finished with 34 touches, 1 goal and 121 SC. Don’t think that’s something that’ll happen every week, but his zoning from defence through to the midfield did look very good. Also allowed Laird to go old school today, crumbed his way to 133 SC.
Have had laird last 3 years , including again this year . Think smith was a whim I will forgo.
Thinking we’re watching two sides that won’t make the 8 though …
McPherson def an upgrade target and pod for f5/6

Concerning for involvement of Greenwood.
Concerning was the noting of O’Brien and comments by commentators that they believe O’Brien will play largely behind the ball this year and Tex will take a lot of the forward half bounces …
MacPherson get into my team. Was already 9th in overall points for forward last year and with a bigger role and natural improvement surely he’s a lock for top 8 this year?
You would take him in front of greenwood.
Absolutely, more upside and 20k cheaper. Greenwood has also really not impressed this pre-season.
MacPherson is a serious risk, but when he’s on, he’s certainly on.
I don’t know what we’ve learnt from GCS’s two Marsh matches however.
One was treated like a scratch match, and Adelaide are either in full rebuild mode or a total rabble, and I’m not even sure they know yet.
Laird 133, will be solid again this year no matter who comes in and out of Crows backline.
Smith 121, don’t be fooled, he and Sloane (81) will probably swap scores come the real stuff.
Fogarty 60, a hulk, shades of Carey, will do well this year but not enough possies to be SC relevant.
O’Brien 60, only played 3 qtrs, looked sluggish, sucking in air from the get go. Something not quite right, perhaps a touch of coronavirus.
McAsey 47, rookie key def, like Fogarty will do well in 2020 but won’t score much for us.
Unfortunately didn’t get to Seymour Butts, benched.
MacPherson 128, preseason anomaly or the next big thing, you decide.
Zac Smith 123, cant take anything out of that with Witts not playing.
Bowes 91, getting better every year.
Greenwood 75, from only 75% game time. That makes him 50:50 for mine.
Rowell & Anderson similar roles to Marsh 1, both benched early. Rowell still the better option.
Budarick 37 from 45%, little pocket rocket.
Looking less and less rookies out there. Our certainties in Rowell, Anderson, McAsey etc all look far less certain.
Maybe Rowell’s or Budarick’s bacon may have been saved by Sexton’s injury and a bit of reshuffling.
Anderson really hasn’t shown anywhere near enough for a round 1 start.
McAsey will play until Doedee is back, then who knows?
The teams the clubs all named really don’t give us much to hope for on the rookie front, do they? Our best looking rookies 8 men deep in a bench is not exactly an inspiring sight.
Adelaide’s injury list prior to rd 1:
Reilly O’Brien, “perhaps a touch of coronavirus”, test
PS form – I agree is never easy to decipher – lack of pressure footy, lots of fiddling by coaches, TOG management in preparation for R1, etc, etc.
Last year Boak and Worpel both went ape and many dismissed becuase of this. Boak had a stellar year (23rd best OA score) and worpel more than 17pts per game to 97 avg 397k price (35th OA score) and while maybe not a keeper ws great stepping stone.
Risk V Reward – every player we ask the same Q. Have to admit – just love seeing blokes get the pill and plenty of TOG – gives them so much confidence at start of year.
So macpherson is a real show in my mind, will get lots more mid time as coach proved in both PS games, an extra 15pts a game to 96, he is in top 6 easily for fwds.
No Fiorini in both Marsh games though…
