Rare Gems – Round 8

Written by The Salamander on July 23 2020

Player Name (Other Position) (Club, Price, Average, Ownership)

DEFENDERS

Luke Ryan (FRE, $503,100, 94.3, 2.3%)
Flying under the radar after a slow start to the season, Ryan has since raised the bat three times in as many weeks, posting scores of 109, 105, and 125.

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith (RICH, $246,900, 92.0, 0.4%)
Finding himself in just 720 teams, his 119 on the weekend sent his average up to 92 and his breakeven down to -37. Still cheap enough to bring in if you need to move someone on down back (e.g. Starcevich).

MIDFIELDERS

Sam Mayes (PTA, $213,500, 115.0, 0.2%)
While it’s doubtful the 26-year-old will maintain a triple-figure average, he did average 80 two years ago, and, in any case, his 115 on the weekend sent his breakeven down to -27. Could be a sneaky downgrade/cow-like object combo if you’re in the market for one.

Touk Miller (GCFC, $542,500, 110.1, 1.0%)
His previous best season average is 89, though he is only 24, and the Suns are a very different outfit this year. Will he keep it up? With this year being what it is, who knows?

Luke Parker (SYD, $541,900, 109.0, 1.6%)
If you take out his 45 from that weird Sydney vs Richmond game a couple of weeks ago, Parker is actually averaging 120 for the season. Given the rebuilding Swans’ absentees at the moment, there’s no way he’s getting shoved in a forward pocket this year. Offers fantastic value for money.

Honourable mention: Adam Treloar (COLL, $628,700, 133.0, 3.3%)
Just outside the usual Rare Gems cutoff of 3 percent, Treloar has been great his opening few matches for the year.

RUCKS

Scott Lycett (PTA, $538,700, 101.5, 1.0%)
Being a fair bit cheaper than the Big 3, and having a pretty easy upcoming draw from a ruck standpoint (a round 9 meeting with Max Gawn notwithstanding), Lycett offers a budget-friendly alternative for those looking to move on, say, Pittonet. That is, if he gets up this week. If he doesn’t, then I’d hold off until round 10, when he faces Tim English.

Honourable mention: Todd Goldstein (NMFC, $669,500, 134.1, 5.8%)
Outside the usual rareness cutoff, but is simply going too well to ignore. Over $100K cheaper than Gawn, Goldstein is the third-highest averaging player in the competition, behind just Gawn and Neale.

FORWARDS

Charlie Dixon (PTA, $468,400, 98.8, 1.2%)
He’s only averaged 90+ twice in his career: first in 2013, then in 2017. Based on that, I guess you could say he’s due, but there is some risk to be aware of. He does, however, offer excellent value for money – if he can keep it up.

  2. Been thinking about bringing him in next week & just loophole him with king , Taylor & cavarra each week
Maybe fluke a 150 from him
Don’t think he’ll loose much more cash
With the extra 4 trades ,
can trade him out for finals easy enough
Slim pickings in the fwd lines & the moment
Dev & bewley are kiln me & the moment

    1. I agree; I think he could be a nice F7 loophole-type option for the price. And he could easily make some big cash if he strings together a couple of good games.

  3. Ryder is a bit of a smoky, especially if you want to maintain R/F swing – while there’s some risk with injury, he’s capable of averaging 90-100 if he can stay healthy.
