Round Review – Round 4

Written by Motts on June 29 2020

Sydney (5.9.39) defeated by Western Bulldogs (10.7.67)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Sydney: Papley (4)

Bulldogs: Bontempelli (2)

  1. Marcus Bontempelli (166). A few goals amongst 19 touches (14 contested), 7 tackles and 7 clearances for the Bont, who was also extremely strong in the air.
  2. Tim English (145). He has delivered over the past two weeks with triple figure scores after a couple of 60’s in rounds one and two. 22 touches, 1 goal and 17 hitouts gave him the ruck battle win on Thursday evening.
  3. Luke Parker (120). A solid game in at the contest for the Swans bull, which included 25 touches (16 contested), 9 clearances and 3 tackles, making it four ton’s in a row.
  4. Caleb Daniel (114). Distributing again was the reliable Bulldog, who used his 17 touches at 88% DE while also having 4 tackles.
  5. Callum Mills (112). Rounding out the top 5 was Mills, who had 18 touches, 6 marks and 4 tackles between half-back and some midfield time.

Other notable scores: The only other two players in triple figures were Lloyd (102) and the 4 goal Papley who had a point less. Scores from there were pretty spread with popular pick Macrae (92) having a decent score even through a tight tag. Louis Butler (49) had 14 touches on debut but used the ball at 21%, while bad news comes in the form of injuries to Naughton (6 weeks from what I read), Naismith who has done an ACL and Lloyd with a shoulder. Josh Kennedy deserves a mention for a great game in his 250th (19 touches, 8 tackles,1 goal), on the same day his grandfather, John Kennedy Snr, passed away.

Disappointment: Typical of Heeney really, tantalises coaches for a few weeks then throws in the odd 64, just let him play in the middle Longmire!

GWS (10.6.66) defeated Collingwood (9.10.64)

Multiple Goal Kickers:

GWS: Greene (3), Cameron (2)

Collingwood: Phillips, Mihocek, Stephenson (2)

  1. Scott Pendlebury (150). A pretty good game from the Pies skipper who used his clean disposal skills to his advantage, having 26 touches (17 contested) and 7 clearances on the night.
  2. Brodie Grundy (135). Had a very big last quarter to register this score, overall picking up 19 touches and 47 hitouts for the evening.
  3. Taylor Adams (122). A solid game against his former team, racking up 17 touches and 10 tackles, another player who now has four ton’s in a row in 2020.
  4. Josh Kelly (120). Smooth mover Kelly had 21 touches and 6 tackles, as well as a very important goal in the final quarter, his best score of the season thus far.
  5. Brayden Maynard (118). This guy also has 4 ton’s in 2020, it must be the blonde hair I mention every week! 23 touches and 584 metres gained, he now averages 113 and has to be considered in future trade calculations especially since….

Other notable scores: Especially since Jeremy Howe (who was playing beautifully with 23 touches and almost 500 metres gained for a score of 112) had his knee bend the complete wrong way late in the final term, which will keep him out for months. Jack Crisp (115) also played well across half-back, while for the Giants, Ward (104), Haynes (102) and Corr (102) topped the ton. Both T.Greene (96) and T.Green (94) were in the 90’s as was Cameron (92). Defenders Williams and Davis sustained hamstring injuries that ended their nights early.

Disappointment: Coniglio (49) had 11 touches playing a lot of his time forward, which seems a complete waste considering how good the guy is.

Port Adelaide (13.11.89) defeated West Coast (6.5.41)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Port Adelaide: Dixon (6), Ebert, Westhoff (2)

West Coast: Kennedy (4)

  1. Charlie Dixon (165). 15 touches (12 contested), 7 marks and 6 goals for big Charlie, the highest single goal tally this season and takes him to the top in the Coleman! This was his second highest career score as well, I guess we’d consider him if he did it every week, but he hasn’t shown us that consistency as of yet.
  2. Josh Kennedy (116). A good scoring day for the spearhead forwards in this game, Kennedy kicked 4 goals to go along with 7 marks and 11 touches.
  3. Luke Shuey (114). The Eagles skipper only played 69% gametime but tried his heart out, racking up 22 touches, with 13 of those coming in a contested situation.
  4. Andrew Gaff (112). That’s four ton’s on the trot for Gaff, who is now averaging 120. 27 touches and 6 marks to go along with almost 400 metres gained on Saturday afternoon for the Eagles wingman.
  5. Brad Ebert (107). In game 250 against his old team, Ebert had 16 touches, 5 tackles and 2 goals, a fine game. Oh, he also had four ton’s on the trot, but would you really consider him?

Other notable scores: Only Sheppard and Kelly (102) hit triple figures apart from the before-mentioned players. With every single Port player scoring 50 or above, you can assume the rest of the scores are fairly spread. No injuries as far as I can see from this game but McGovern was a late out with an ankle issue, his replacement Schofield being placed on report for his best Zinedine Zidane impression.

Disappointment: Like many of his Eagles teammates, Elliot Yeo (71) is struggling. This is his 3rd disappointment score of the year, yikes.

St Kilda (15.3.93) defeated Richmond (10.7.67)

Multiple Goal Kickers:

St Kilda: Membrey, Butler (3), Marshall, Lonie, Kent (2)

Richmond: Lynch, Bolton (2)

  1. oby Nankervis (184). A huge game for the Tigers ruckman, laying 7 tackles, having 17 touches (12 contested), 5 clearances, 26 hitouts and 1 goal against a pretty good ruckman in Marshall. Wouldn’t expect his sort of score often though, as it was his career high.
  2. Shane Edwards (119). A solid game from the veteran Tiger, who picked up 24 touches (14 contested) a solitary goal and laying 6 tackles, splitting time between forward and the middle.
  3. Tim Membrey/Dan Butler (118). Both Saints forwards kicked 3 goals on the evening, while also laying 3 tackles and having 6 contested touches. The difference was there disposal count, 14 to Butler, 13 to Membrey, and marks, 3 to Butler, 7 to Membrey.
  4. Rowan Marshall (117). No Paddy Ryder to contend with meant Marshall had to sole ruck role, and thrived. 15 touches, 2 goals and 25 hitouts had shades of 2019 written all over it.
  5. Jack Steele (114). Another great game for the young Saint, who had 24 touches and 9 tackles on the evening, taking his season average to 113.

Other notable scores: Jack Billings had 25 touches at 76% DE for 113, the same score as Tigers skipper Cotchin, who had 23 touches and 6 tackles. Tigers livewire Higgins was the only other player in the 100’s with his 106. No major injuries or debuts to mention here.

Disappointment: Veteran Tiger Houli didn’t have his cleanest game which resulted in his score of 68.

Carlton (7.10.52) defeated Essendon (8.3.51)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Carlton: Casboult (3), McGovern (2)

Essendon: Parish, Stringer (2)

  1. Sam Docherty (185). A huge game for the Blue co-skipper, the tied-second best score of the season behind Viney’s 186 in round 1. 10 marks, 32 touches (22 kicks) all at 90% DE and 547 metres gained earned his coaches this monster score.
  2. Jordan Ridley (134). Another prime example of good ball use equaling higher scores. The young Bomber didn’t have much of it but 18 touches at 94% DE meant he scored well.
  3. Adam Saad (131). Much like Ridley, Saad used his possessions well, only having 16 of them but with 81% DE and, with no turnovers, returned a great score for his small number of owners.
  4. Levi Casboult (126). Genuinely one of my favourite players at the moment, he clunks almost everything, taking 9 marks on the night, and throw in 3 goals and 14 touches, he’s turned himself into a reliable player for the Blues.
  5. Ed Curnow (122). Talking about reliable players, this guy does it week in week out for Carlton with no fuss. 20 touches with 6 tackles allowed him to round out the top 5 scores from this game.

Other notable scores: David Cuningham (102) had a career night and was probably best on ground, racking up 28 touches. Another Blue in Gibbons (115) also showed his class, having 25 touches, 8 marks and 5 tackles while splitting his time across the middle and up forward. Walsh, Murphy and Pittonet were in the 90’s, while debutant Philp (32) had 5 touches. Jack Silvagni finished up very early after a whack to the ribs (which ended up being a punctured lung and fractured ribs).

Disappointment: Both Merrett (78) and Cripps (81) were down on their expected output.

Gold Coast (10.4.64) defeated Fremantle (8.3.51)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Gold Coast: Rowell, King, Sexton (2)

Fremantle: Bewley, Walters (2)

  1. Jarrod Witts (144). Two game leading scores in a row for the Suns ruckman, this week courtesy of 12 touches, 5 marks and 38 hitouts. Don’t think there’s much point getting him in at 499K, but if you’ve got him, I think you can expect him to average 105 from here on.
  2. Matthew Rowell (114). Imagine being 4 games into your AFL career and being 3rd favourite for the Brownlow Medal. 20 disposals and 2 goals this week for Rowell, along with 5 tackles, kid’s a beast.
  3. Michael Walters (113). Is making a case for All-Aus this year, with another impressive game that included 2 goals and 15 touches with 4 tackles, one of Fremantle’s best.
  4. Touk Miller (111). Another solid game for the tough Sun, having 20 touches (12 contested) to go along with 8 tackles. Is actually averaging 111 so far this season with a low of 98.
  5. Griffin Logue/Hayden Young (109). A couple of young Dockers rounded out the top 5 here. Logue had a career best score thanks to his 11 touches and 4 tackles, while second-gamer Young had 15 touches and 6 tackles which should get him a rising star nomination.

Other notable scorers: A couple of Jacks here by the names of Bowes (107) and Lukosius (102) also hit triple figures, but that’s where the high scores end. Matt Taberner was in the 90’s but I’d be very surprised if anyone owns him, while Caleb Serong (71) had a great debut with 12 touches, 5 tackles and 272 metres gained.

Disappointment: Nat Fyfe (71) was well on his way to another 100+ score until his hamstring pinged, ending his day early. If he misses games, maybe it gives Andrew Brayshaw (78) some more scoring opportunities.

Brisbane (10.23.83) defeated Adelaide (7.4.46)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Brisbane: McCarthy, Cameron (2)

Adelaide: Walker, Frampton (2)

  1. Jarrod Berry (150). Bettered his score from last week (127) with his 23 touch, 7 mark, 10 tackle effort that will only increase the amount of people that have him on their shortlist for years to come.
  2. Lachie Neale (147). 31 touches (13 contested), 4 clearances and 3 tackles for Lachie with a huge 568 metres gained, now just imagine if he’d have kicked 6 goals rather than 6 behinds.
  3. Hugh McLuggage (141). 24 touches (13 contested) for the Lions smooth mover along with almost 500 metres gained gave him the third best score here, but again, imagine if he’d kicked straight instead of 1 goal 5 behinds!
  4. Mitch Robinson (139). Another Lions midfielder here, he had 17 disposals with 12 contested touches, but throw in 76% DE and that can explain his score.
  5. Brodie Smith (106). 16 disposals but 15 kicks for the Crows back-flanker, who used the ball at 87% DE and gained 581 metres on the day.

Other notable scores: Only Brad Crouch (102) was above the hundred mark for his 24 touch game, with Lions backman Andrews and Rich (both 96) being the only players in the 90’s, with pretty spread scores from there on in. Shane McAdam (26) had 5 touches and 4 tackles on debut, while injuries and in-game niggles went to Crocker, Sloane, Gardiner, Zorko and Hamill, the last two seeming the more serious ones.

Disappointment: A little bit rough here but going to give it to Rory Laird (86) who has a season average of 88 now, less than many of us were hoping for.

Melbourne (6.8.44) defeated by Geelong (7.5.47)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Melbourne: Brayshaw (2)

Geelong: Zilch

  1. Cameron Guthrie (142). Sporting a bit of a Castaway look in 2020, Guthrie played a great game in the middle, having 24 touches (19 kicks), 10 marks and a goal on the evening.
  2. Max Gawn (141). The Demons skipper tried all he could to get his team a come-from-behind win, eventually finishing with 33 hitouts, 17 touches and 4 clearances.
  3. Patrick Dangerfield (140). A season best score thus far for the champion Cat. He had 22 touches (10 contested), 6 marks, 3 tackles and a goal on the night playing between midfield and deep forward.
  4. Mitch Duncan (120). Has gone completely under the radar so far this season, has four ton’s in a row and is averaging 120. 19 touches, 9 marks and a goal all contributed well to his score.
  5. Jake Kolodjashnij (115). The reliable Cats backman posted a career high score due to his 14 touches, 6 marks and 85% DE.

Other notable scorers: Plenty of other players over 100 here, so from the Demons there was Oliver (111) and Brayshaw (113), while from the Cats it was Selwood (104), Blicavs (107), Parfitt (104), O’Connor (106) and lastly, Menegola (108). Trent Rivers went alright with 12 touches and should make some money, but bad news for any Tom Stewart owners, with a broken collarbone ending his night very early.

Disappointment: Taking the easy way out here, but Stewart’s score of 18 takes the cake.

Hawthorn (8.10.58) defeated North Melbourne (8.6.54)

Multiple Goal Kickers

Hawthorn: Wingard (3)

Kangaroos:

  1. Tom Mitchell (143). Best score of the season here for Mitchell, courtesy of 21 touches (13 contested) at 81% DE, 8 tackles and 8 clearances, let’s hope he can get on a roll.
  2. Shaun Higgins (141). Age doesn’t seem to be catching up with Shaun, his 30 touches were a game high here.
  3. Chad Wingard (136). Enjoying a solid season, Chad had another 3 goals on Sunday evening, taking him to equal third in the Coleman medal with 9 goals. Throw in 18 touches, and you can see why he scored so well.
  4. James Worpel (133). A huge game on the inside of the contest for the Worpedo, laying 9 tackles and having 24 touches.
  5. Jy Simpkin (119). Another player who has four tons in a row, a bit of a trend for this round’s review. Simpkin is now averaging 123.5 over the first month (technically) of AFL. 23 touches, 1 goal and 8 tackles for him on the night.

Other notable scorers: James Sicliy (117) was the only other Hawk over 100 while Shiels, O’Brien and Henderson were lost in the nervous 90’s. Todd Goldstein continued his strong season with 116, midfielders Anderson (103) and Pittard (113) played well, swingman Walker had exactly 100, and finally star defender Tarrant, also had 100. First gamers Xerri (54) and Mahoney (50) played well, but skipper Ziebell had a hamstring injury.

Disappointment: O’Meara (54) couldn’t keep his high scores going unfortunately.

    1. Well said, RB! Dane gets this to me late on a Sunday night. The guy must work all weekend to put this together and for that he should absolutely be commended.

  1. Love the review and appreciate you getting it out so quickly as I drink my Monday morning coffee. Now I have a few days to ponder the big issues – who do I bring in for Howe and Fyfe?

  2. McCluggage a difficult one to read. Do we expect the yo-yo scoring to continue all season or were his first two rounds outliers, with a decent average to continue to build from here?

    Thoughts?

  3. Another reason to heap praise on this site. Its just a small comment but referring to Brayshaws chances without Fyfe is very helpful to inexperienced SCers like myself.

  4. New covid 19 protocols in Queensland.
Any Queensland-based team which plays against a Melbourne team in Queensland is required to quarantine for 14 days.

Thursday night’s game between West Coast and Richmond on the Gold Coast has been postponed
Sydney will fly into the Eagles’ Gold Coast hub instead, for a game on Saturday
The Tigers will now stay at home and play Melbourne on Sunday
Carlton and St Kilda’s game, originally slated for Saturday afternoon, will also be moved to fill the now-vacant Thursday night.

  5. Agree with you on Casboult Motts – he’s a big bloke with excellent hands. He’s been prone to poor set-shots but seems to have turned the corner this year, just wish it would have happened before his 10th/11th season!
